550 Almond AveA great school..my nieces and nephews go there.
Rachel R's posting is not correct....I don't know where she is getting her information about Ohlone Indians and Christmas break. Does she know that Ohlones do refer to themselves as Ohlone Indians? None of the teachers that I know of (from my nieces/nephews classes) refer to the December break as Christmas break? Santa Claus is now secular so I'm not sure why she has problems with it. Seems to me that the "nanny" needs to be educated.
I have been nanny to four Almond students. This is a well respected school in a highly desirable school district. I'm told that some hoop jumping is required to get in.
My favorite of their offerings is the annual Walkabout. It is a school fundraiser where the kids get pledges to walk laps on a track at the school.
I do have a few gripes. Almond tends to be startlingly un-PC, especially for the area. For example:
* Students learn about the native "Ohlone Indians". Every time one of my charges says "Indians" I correct them to "Native Americans". Really stupid terminology to use at a school with a significant Indian population.
* Their winter break is called "Christmas Break". And they do a Christmas play. Three of the four kids I worked with weren't Christian and it always seemed awkward when they were bringing home their poinsettia and Santa Claus art. Even when I was young, my rural school catered to it's handful of non-Christian students by including Hanukkah in the winter performances and calling the vacation "Winter Break". Almond has a February break that they call "Winter Break" and all other Bay Area schools call "Ski Week".
