About 4 months ago my best friend wanted to try yoga to help get into shape for her wedding. So I jumped on the bandwagon and we both did the 30 days unlimited yoga for $30. I went in thinking it would be miserable and I would have to force myself to go, just like any other fitness class.  I am over weight and I was doubtful of my ability to even do yoga.

After my first intro to Hartha class with Sarah I was hooked. 7 days and 7 classes later I couldn't see my life without yoga or without the instruction I received at Almaden yoga. I never once felt like I didn't belong or was judged by physical abilities. Walking into the studio there is a calm and happy feeling that just envelopes you, makes you feel comfortable, and makes you ready to push your limits.

The teachers are all great. They pay attention to how you are doing the poses and if you need any modifications or help. Pretty much all the good things everyone is talking about are true.

Now four months later I feel better, look better, and enjoy my practice more than ever before. I have tried out a few other yoga studios in the San Jose area and none of them compare to Almaden.

My only complaint is one of circumstance. I wish they offered even more classes or had a second room. Maybe if all you yelpers would come try out Almaden then they would be able to expand!

Smallish, well laid out yoga center in a strip-mall.  Friendly  front desk person & teacher.  Well supplied with additional mats, blocks, blankets, straps, etc.  Good variety of classes/styles.

Joan was fun and knowledgeable ;)

Free Sunday classes!!  Which was a great opportunity to drag my brother (a newbie to yoga) along.

I attended this studio for 1 month with a trubates coupon (otherwise I don't think I could afford it b/c yoga studios in general are pretty pricey) and I loved how many different yoga classes they offered.

They even offer a yoga course in which you work with a partner which I thought was very unique and fun.  There is only 1 yoga room which is smaller than most yoga rooms I have been to but it is well kept and clean (though it can get stuffy in there when there's lots of people).

    The instructors there are great!

My friend and I decided to buy the living social deal, $20 for 10 classes. It did not state on the coupon that it had to be used in 30 days, however, when we signed up and starting taking classes they let us know the limitation.

They have several classes throughout the day, including early morning and evenings. It's kinda far away from where I live so my friend and I have been going to the 7pm classes on the week days and the 11am classes on the weekends.

Anuja is awesome. I love her style and we missed her while she was out of town for the last week or so. :) Ron subbed and so did Wei. Both were awesome as well!

My only complaint is that the classes can get packed and you feel like a sardine. They do cut it off at 20 though, so yay for that!

I wish you were closer to my house Almaden Yoga, cause then I'd probably join. OH well. :(

I stumbled on this place accidently. I was looking for a chiropractor close to work when I ended up seeing the studio. They were closer to work than the chiropractor was, so I thought I'd give a shot. A total yoga dummy, I did their $30 welcome offer and a year and half later, I'm so hooked. I feel the difference when I go on vacation and I feel all this tension in back and shoulders. I always walk out of class with a smile on my face and without that tension in my body and stress from work. All the instructors here are so kind and welcoming - no one pushes you to do anything you can't and you feel welcome to take it as easy as you want or push yourself as hard as you want. It's a genuine caring place to share your yoga practice with. I'm not a skinny mini, so take it from me - this place rocks.

The instructors here are truly superb. I am a bit of a Yogi noob and even though I stumbled into two seemingly advanced classes, I did not at all feel intimidated. The instructors are really good at pointing out modified versions of advanced poses and always encourage you to embrace your own practice. The studio is stocked with plenty or blocks, blankets, and straps at no additional rental cost, so to help you modify your poses.

After four classes here, I am starting to notice a slight improvement in my sleep and overall mood. Once my TownHog sessions run out I definitely hope to continue taking the Hatha with Anuja and Qi Flow class with Neda and hope to gain overall improvement in flexibility and toning. Pure Zen!

I've been trying a bunch of the yoga studios in San Jose using various online deals (Groupon, Town Hog, Living Social, etc.) -- I bought the 10 classes for $20 deal for this location.

It's located in a pretty sad-looking plaza, but since it's not busy, parking was never an issue.   The entrance to the plaza is actually located on Via Valiente, not Almaden.

The studio itself was pretty sad too.  The lobby area is quite cramped and can be a little claustrophobic at the beginning and end of classes.  They only have one yoga room -- hardwood floors, single-wall mirror, two doors, no windows.

Staff and instructors were pretty good though.  Barbara, who teaches Medicine Yoga, was by far the best.

If I could give this place more stars, I definitely would.

I recently graduated from college and I was looking for something to keep me occupied between graduating and starting my first real job in September. I saw the 30 days for 30 bucks deal and I jumped on it! I had always wanted to try yoga, but school did not give me much time for it.

I absolutely love this studio! I've heard that yoga studios can get a little pretentious; there is none of that at Almaden Yoga. Every teacher that I took a class with was very talented and approachable. To make this review more specific to a few teachers, I have some good things to say:

Sarah: Throughout the class, she continually emphasizes listening to your body and not pushing yourself to the point of pain. I need this reminder, at times, because I get a little too into it.

Noell: I only took one class with her, but I wish I could have taken more because I like her personality. Her flow class wasn't super physically intense and that is really refreshing because I focused on calming my mind a lot more.

Wei: Her classes kick your butt! I always walked out with a grossly sweaty shirt after her class. I went to her classes quite a bit because I knew I would push myself to new limits.

I'll miss this place! I hope to be back in a year. Until then, I have pretty high standards for whatever studio I go to next!

I have fallen in love with the Yoga Tone class on Sunday mornings.  For me, this is totally worth the drive from downtown San Jose - over 20 minutes - it's that good.  I really like the studio, lots of mirrors and wall space.  It's a quiet studio and not too crowded.  The Yoga Tone class is pretty hard, but somehow the instructor makes the class go be quickly and painlessly (sort of :)  When my Groupon classes are over I am definitely going to be buying more classes!

It's crazy that I am going to 4 different yoga studios at the same time but I am going through a very difficult time in my life right now and yoga seems to be the only thing that relieves me of that stress.  I have been to 3 classes here and I really liked it.  I bought a Groupon deal and I am really glad I did!

The instructors are very knowledgeable.  I am in no way advanced but they are really very encouraging to the point that I even attempted to perform the Birds of Paradise and the Crow pose.  I've had very little success with both poses but this time, they taught me a few tricks that seemed to take me closer to my goal.  So hopefully, before the end of 2011, I will be able to do both poses successfully:))

I also particularly enjoy the Meditation classes by Anuja on Friday nights.  It is THE perfect way to end a very stressful week and to prepare myself for the weekend.  The students who come here are very serious about their practice and I really like that.  There is always an air of calmness in the room when I come in and that puts me at ease instantaneously.  I want to try Hatha and the Yoga tone classes because those classes seem to be unique to the studio.   So far, I really like this studio and I think I will keep coming....

I have started going here since I have gotten their groupon. $20 for 10 sessions what a deal. What really pulled me here is the prenatal yoga classes. My first few sessions were free because in March they were offering free prenatal yoga classes.

The instructor Nanci is great! she does a great job teaching the class and answering any questions you might have. She has tons of information and is always willing to answer them.

The prenatal classes are on Mondays at 11am.

The only downside to this is that it is 30min away from me but i still try to go as much as I can before my due date.

I would totally recommend the prenatal yoga class here with nanci. she sometimes also has couples prenatal yoga =)

It is located in a small cvs plaza. plenty of parking.

Pros: This place has various classes during the weekends ( both on Saturday and Sunday) that is very important for busy professionals that cannot make it during the weekdays :-)  It has professional, friendly teachers.

Very impressed with this little studio, truly a hidden gem out in Almaden Valley. I actually bought the intro packages here and at Yoga Source in Los Gatos. I decided to give both a try to see which was a better fit for my schedule and needs. While Yoga Source wins the "best looking studio" award hands down...Almaden Yoga impressed me with the variety of classes and expertise of teachers.

Yeah, the teachers at Yoga Source are pretty awesome but due to the ginormous size of most classes, they really aren't able to provide the level of assistance many of us need with our poses. And, through no fault of their own, the classes I like just don't happen at a time that works for me. So when my intro period runs out, that's the end of that.

But back to my review of Almaden Yoga....

I'm a huge fan of Anuja's and have decided to stalk her by showing up to as many of her classes as I can manage without overtaxing my muscles or creeping her out. I like the smaller class sizes and the more relaxed/casual feel. And thankfully, the botox and collagen crowd are few and far between!

I only gave four stars because the studio could be a bit larger. I shudder to think what might happen if the place really gets popular...not sure how well they'd be able to support class sizes similar to some of the more well-known studios. But overall, this place rocks!

I discovered this studio by accident, searching around for different studios in the San Jose area. I've only been to one class, their free "Intro to Hatha Yoga" session, taught by Sarah, who was a calm, quiet, but firm presence throughout the class. Her style of instruction really suited me, and I felt very welcome in the space and in the class. The lights were dimmed and the focus was really entirely on your own breath and taking each pose to exactly where your body wanted you to go. There wasn't any pressure to go further, do more; it was all very encouraging and welcoming.

This studio is a bit far from where I live but I will try to go back regularly, as I very much enjoyed this class, it was a great way to wind up a weekend and refocus for yet another workweek.

This yoga studio seems to do everything right.

Brand new in February 2010, there's a beautiful wood floor and a wall of mirrors so you can check your alignment throughout the class. The studio provides loaner mats as well as blocks, blankets, and straps to use during your visit. There's a retail section in front - it stocks Anuja's own line of yoga clothing, fancy yoga mats and bags, straps, and other accessories for purchase.

The studio offers a range of classes, including Yin, Iyengar, Flow, and Anuja's specialty: Hatha. The intro $30 for 30 days unlimited classes deal is great so you can try out the different types of yoga, teacher leadership style, and class time.  Classes were fairly conveniently scheduled, though I would have liked a daily 11am or early afternoon slot. You can choose from 6am, 9:30am, 5:30pm, and 7pm on most days of the week.

I'm sort of an advanced beginner when it comes to yoga. I know most of the poses and can follow a flow routine pretty well, but my body has some flexibility and strength issues that prevent me from doing some of the basics (let alone bird of paradise!). The classes are pleasant for me despite my limitations 92% of the time; occasionally when the instruction gets intense and the teachers push the class to do more advanced, intricate poses my inabilities come up and embarrass me. But that's the thing about yoga - you have to check your ego at the door and notice what your body does and needs, without judgment.

I ended up preferring the flow style classes over Hatha (both occur daily) and enjoyed the repetition of sun salutations and different routines. My favorite instructor is Wei, who plays fun and lighthearted music (Jack Johnson and Ingrid Michaelson) and helps each student adjust poses throughout the class. I really like (and need!) the individual attention and adjustments and don't find this from many other instructors (here or elsewhere). Wei is a personal trainer so she understands the body really well; she was able to give me some recommendations to address specific issues my body faces when I asked questions after class.

I also really enjoyed Barbara's Tuesday morning elements of flow class. She breaks flow down into its micro actions and works out your entire body from head to toe. She's an adorable person who really inspires me with her fresh energy and zest for life.

Thanks to Anuja's laid-back attitude, the studio attracts friendly locals who like to joke and laugh a lot before (and sometimes during) class. I'm a pretty serious person who seeks yoga for wellness, so it took me a little while to get used to the joking - but in the end I think it's a good thing to get used to.  The studio hosts special seminars like Laughter Yoga and even does a yoga retreat.

The studio is in the side corner pocket in the shopping center that includes P-W market, Elements restaurant, and Unwined wine bar. There's also a hair/nail salon and a karate studio nearby.

Yoga at 6am - sounds horrid, and well yes getting out of bed is not easy, but by the time we get to 7:15am I'm buzzing from the yoga flow class and ready to meet the day - and I'm at work well before 8.

On the weekends for me, it's hatha yoga for a deeper stretch and strength - and gods do my thighs hate me for it!  Heh.  I keep telling them they'll appreciate it later, when we can be doing a chair pose and manage to lift one leg off the floor and then up to the toes with the other foot, but my thighs aren't listening to me right now.  Ah well, they'll learn.

I'm super thrilled to have yoga so close to home - and classes early enough to do yoga before work on weekdays.  The studio is fabulous: wooden floors, soft lighting, a wall of mirrors to help get alignment correct for the poses.  They also have reasonably priced yoga clothing and mats/bags/etc for sale.   The whole studio is clean and just feels wonderful to walk into.  I felt welcome by the space, as well as the people, the first time I walked in (bleary eyed at 6am) and the more often I go, the more comfortable I feel.

And to top it off teachers are friendly and encouraging.  And I just adore the owner, Anuja.  She's friendly, funny, encouraging, full of enthusiasm - and has the most lovely voice.  It makes the quiet portions of the practice easier, having her directing your relaxation and return to motion.  She even appreciates laughter in class when she suggests we take a move to the next level and those of us who are having trouble holding the easier pose snicker at the idea of getting a foot off the floor or being able to reach all the way around with arms to grasp our hands together while doing a standing twist. ;)

That said, I can't wait until my muscles catch up with my enthusiasm and I'm able to manage four classes a week - right now every other day-ish is all my body will tolerate.

What I like most about Almaden Yoga is that the teachers take time during class to walk through and check your position. Even if you are new and its your first time in the studio - they will still help you get the pose right!  They are very patient with new students. Other places tend to ignore newbies until you've gone a few times and show you're serious about learning.  Trisha's class is always a good challenge, as is Power Yoga, but any of the Flow classes will make you sweat.  They are great about telling students how to modify the pose to make it easier, or more challenging. I've learned a ton over the past year so if you really want to get better at your practice, this is the place to go!

    Anuja and Ron,

I have been doing yoga at Almaden Yoga for over 6 months.  I started out just wanting to stretch, but I gained more insight into Yoga each time I went.  Practicing yoga started to still my mind...... What calmed my mind was learning how to breathe in rythmic even breaths.  I became  more aware of my body, feeling what muscles to put to contract in a pose, and letting go of the muscles I did not need to tense up during the pose.  I have been practicing  3-4 X a week in the last 5 months, and I deelpy thank each teacher for helping me on my path.

My yoga practice has helped me outside of the studio in my day to day life.  I can re-create in life  what I have learned to do in the studio:  breathing,  calmness, openess, and flexibility in the mind body, and   heart.  Yoga has enhanced my ability to concentrate during difficult tasks.

I beleive there is a peaceful connection in all people: in mind, body and heart.  I beleive Yoga helps calm and open your mind so you can feel the connections.

I already did an extended review to Almaden Yoga the day I took the first class. I am coming back to do justice since I have been coming regularly now between 2 and 3 times a week. This studio has not only friendly front desk people but also it is nice to see many students faces I recognize already..
I found some excellent classes that I take weekly and I wanted to put it here.
Yoga practice is very personal and every human looks for something else in a class..this means that what makes a good practice for me, may not be what you are looking for in yours. Having said this, I am in a place where I enjoy experiencing and deepening postures, I am trying to learn to hold them and breathe, I'm looking to understand how my muscles can help me with balance, how strength is as important as good alignment..I found Noelle to be one of my favorite teachers in this sense..She is Anusara oriented (style I feel awesome with) and I really enjoy that her classes are flow but not the "run after 250 poses in a class" type :D. Her classes build from the start and I feel I can accomplish new "a-ha" moments every time.
I also like Trisha a lot..also flow, strong asana class, challenging, lots of abdominal work..like it lots!!
I heard Elena's class is also excellent and that's the one I will try next when my schedule permits. I love morning classes cause they get me energized for the rest of the day!
    Go Almaden Yoga!! Great place!

Almaden Yoga is a wonderful yoga studio for those who want to practice everyday or who only want to practice a couple times a month. The instructors are fabulous. I have not had a bad class at this studio and I have tried out almost all of them.

I have practiced at many studios all over the bay area and this studio is an extremely friendly place to practice. Many of its members attend classes regularly so you will pretty much always see a familiar face.

They also have a great deal going on...30 days of unlimited yoga for $30. You CANNOT beat this. Their memberships are also very reasonable. If you are new to yoga you should definitely try out Almaden Yoga and be sure to do the 30 day/$30 deal because you only get it when you are a new member and 2 drop in classes will already cost you $30 so it really is a great deal. If you are not new to yoga but need a studio in south san jose (as I did) definitely become a member...the classes are challenging and you will grow in your practice.

One last thing...to celebrate their 1 year anniversary Almaden Yoga is having a full day of Free Yoga classes on Saturday, Feb. 5th so you can check out the studio that day and see if you like it as much as I do. Classes are well attended so I recommend getting there early to reserve a spot. Classes are going from 8am to 6pm...check out their website for class types and times.

This studio is exactly what it should be- a comminuty. Inviting, kind, humble, and with the skills to cater to any level yogi. The owners are active in the community and actually teach some classes themselves. I've been consistently taking classes for over nine months with them and have seen vast improvements in mind, body, and spirit. Thank you!

The special offer of $30 for 30 days unlimited classes is a GREAT way to try all the varied offerings at this calm space of serenity in Almaden.
I adore Anuja's classes - she's so calm and authoritative in the gentlest of ways, reminding you at opportune moments about your breathing and posture. Also the Yin class teacher is unbelievably good. I've tried Trevor's Wei's and the free class on Sundays too, and enjoyed them all, and I'm a total rookie. Anuja and her husband  Ron Victor act as gracious hosts to their new venture. It's a convenient location, just off the expressway, it's beauttiful, clean and serene, with excellent instructors, and plenty of mats. blocks etc. It's a hidden gem in Almaden!

ZERO STARS!! If that were possible! I have never written a negative review before, but since I was practically barred from entering, I feel compelled. I just had a very frustrating and dissatisfactory experience at Almaden Yoga. Being relatively new to the area and to yoga, I am trying a few different yoga studios to see which centers, schedules,a and locations would work for me.  Unfortunately, I will not be trying Almaden Yoga!  I went there tonight to try to activate my Groupon which expires tomorrow.  I was late for the class that was going on then, but told the receptionist that I was worried that my meeting tomorrow evening across town would run late and I wouldn't be able to make it in time for tomorrow night's last class. I asked her to please activate the membership and I would attend a class later this week (I knew I was too late to enter the class and didn't even ask to do so).  She just shrugged and said that I HAD to attend a class in order to activate the membership.  I said it was okay if she charged me for a class that I didn't actually attend and reiterated that time was running out and that the likelihood was that I wouldn't be able to actually ATTEND a class before the Groupon expired.  Again she shrugged and said that that was too bad.  I was flabbergasted at her inflexibility and the extremely limited manner in which she stated that the Groupon could be activated. You would think that of all people, someone involved in the yoga business would be more flexible (no pun intended)!  I understand I would have to fill out paperwork, but I can't see how actually sitting in a class matters at all in the activation of a membership!!  She could have put me down as attending tonight's class and activated me right there.  I have never encountered such a rude, rigid,  and unaccommodating person when using Groupons before, and I have purchased a lot.  Conversely, when I recently redeemed a LivingSocial coupon at another yoga studio, but couldn't access the app on my iPhone, the instructor was very kind and patient while I tried to find the number on her computer. I am so frustrated and angry about today's encounter, that I do not want to patronize Almaden Yoga again. You have lost a customer--not a wise decision in this economy!  The owners should be keenly aware of how easily businesses can fail these days, located so far down in Almaden Valley and in a strip mall with several empty stores!

Good instructors, good workout, and lots of good feelings afterwards.  Time flies and before you know it, you've completed 1 hour and 15 minutes of hard work.  Pricing is also reasonable and flexible.

Finally a yoga studio has opened up in the heart of Almaden!  Anuja Chaudhir and Ron Victor opened up their studio at the beginning of February and they have created a welcoming environment for their customers.  If you want to try their studio, they offer an introductory rate of $30 for 30 days.  They want you to try the many different classes that are offered.  Classes are available for the very beginner and for those who are looking for a challenge.  I was always intimidated by the idea of yoga, and didn't think that I would ever find a studio that would welcome someone who couldn't touch their toes.   I joined a few weeks ago and have tried many different classes including Hatha, Vinyassa Flow and Yoga Tone.  No, I still can not touch my toes, but I can feel that I am loosening up a little.  Anuja and Ron listen to their customers and are adding new classes every week.  I am thrilled that they have moved into our neighborhood and I encourage anyone to stop by and speak to Ron and Anuja and check out their studio.
