Allsup's... The infamous late-night dig that sits on the byway to your next crazy Taos adventure. Among my group of companions, Allsup's is most notable for its chimichangas. Greasy-orange, with the golden crust of hot heat lamp dough burning the tips of your fingers, it washes down perfectly with a tallboy of Four Loko (which is also sold in the back.) Sometimes your beloved chimichanga will smell like ammonia, and sometimes it'll smell like cigarettes tinged with the slightest trace of bathroom cleaner. At other times, it'll be absolutely wonderful, like a 7-11 monster taquito, an endless box of nachos, or that magnificent day-old glazed donut you find, glowing from its pastry case at 3 in the morning. How could any drive into the mesa and down to the beach be complete without one or two of these deep-fried burritos?
Bottom Line: A tradition as hallowed as pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving.
