If Deluxe Town Diner had a hotter, fitter, more food-lifestyle considerate hipster younger brother, Allston Diner would be it. I went for the first time today and had the hash and eggs. If your breakfast food memory only recalls hash from a can, get ready for your socks to get blown off! These thin and crispy tendrils of corned beef with shredded carrots and tiny potato morsels are that of irish boy's dreams. The eggs on top were caressed over easy with real butter and were full of drippy yolk goodness. Oh and then there were the rosemary potatoes,  these thin silver dollar potatoes were so perfectly seasoned that I dared not to dip them in ketchup. Rather I surgically opened my egg yolks with the tip of my fork scooping out all of the yolk with these large rosemary potato slices.

If this restaurant were a person, our Facebook status would read: deep-deep like. While I'm not a vegan, there are a number of options for them. My hope is that as they grow they may offer more gluten-free options. The meal I had today was gluten-free since I 86-ed the toast, but I hope they may explore some gluten-free pancakes or maybe offer it as an add-on for toast in the future. Needless to say, Allston Diner is officially entering my brunch rotation. Don't believe it could possibly be THAT good, check out the hash and eggs pictures to follow and let your eyes do the deciding .

Couldn't be more disappointed. I couldn't even tell you how the food is because after 40 minutes, I gave up.  IT WAS JUST PANCAKES.... 40 minutes to make pancakes?!!?!

The lady proceeds to tell me that it was because they had a lot of orders at once, but almost every person there was already eating when I walked in, and groups of people who ordered after us were served.

They were a mess, I would suggest ANYWHERE else to grab a local breakfast.

This place is cool cause you don't cook your breakfast for one morning, and it's not Denny's or IHOP, but I feel like it might as well be.

I went a few months ago when they first opened, so of course ya gotta give them some leeway on the new business front. But even with the newness, the food was ALRIGHT at best. If someone asked me "Hey Tracy, you look great by the way, what's a good place for a tasty breakfast that's like IHOP but isn't?" I would totally recommended this place. But if someone asked me "Hey Tracy, you look like a roach infested apartment toilet, what's a good breakfast joint that serves good food prompt and unbegrudgingly?" I would reprimand them for their rudeness then suggest The Friendly Toast.

It was St. Paddy's Day Saturday and the boy and I were looking for a good brunch place with no line... Matt Murphy's would have been a madhouse, and Lineage only does Sunday brunch, so we decided to try Allston Diner.

We got there around 9:45 and were seated right away. The place was busy but not overwhelmingly so, and even when we left an hour or so later, surprisingly there still wasn't a line... guess Allston hipsters and frat boys don't rise before noon?

Waitstaff was all very friendly and accessible, providing good service, and the diner itself is cute and cheery. They have a good menu, covers the basics but also has some interesting items as well. I was drawn to the Nutella Garden (nutella, peanut butter, bananas, strawberries, and whipped cream sandwiched between 2 pancakes), but was really craving waffles (wish you could substitute for the pancakes!), so I went for the buttermilk waffle instead.

My waffle was fresh and tasty, topped with whipped cream and tons of actually ripe strawberry slices and blueberries (shocking for a breakfast joint, usually you get the wilted/white fresh fruit,or some kind of compote). Seriously, where did they find such ripe and juicy fruit this time of year, they definitely didn't taste frozen... pretty stoked about that. I also got a side of the home fries and they were delightful, thin slices of potatoes perfectly seasoned with rosemary that really hit the spot. Such classy home fries for a diner.

The boy had the BBQ Brisket Breakfast (in-house brisket over texas toast topped with melted cheddar and 2 eggs any style. served with home fries) and was also delightfully surprised, as the house-made brisket wasn't just chunks of beef but was chopped up finely and formed into a sort of patty, making it easy to eat. He's not a big breakfast fan so usually goes with the lunch side of brunch menus, but this dish had the best of all worlds and he was happily satisfied.

The diner is a step up from a greasy spoon, so prices and quality are both a bit higher comparatively, but worth it... we cleaned our plates and were full for the rest of the day (incidentally, we did not have another meal that day, but whether that has to do with Allston Diner or the subsequent Paddy's Day festivities, I'll leave it to you to decide...). Also, breakfast all day? Nicely done.

Thumbs up, Allston Diner. I'll be back (your chicken and waffle is calling).

I wanted to try this place cause I had seen it next to Sheesha for a while and it looked good.  And it really was.  The staff were friendly.  The owner came over and sat with me to talk. Food was delicious.

Overall a great experience I hope to repeat.

After talking to the staff, I discovered that this place is brand new and being run by just a few good friends trying to help each other out! Touche for new local businesses trying to get their foot in the door! It's not easy.  Especially when fellow yelpers feel the need to totally berate this newborn diner on their first busy day ever.  :-( Where is the sense of camaraderie?! I really feel like Yelp is a hinderance to local businesses more than a help sometimes.

Firstly, the prices are fair.  I don't know where everyone else eats food or if no one has noticed how expensive it is to be a restaurant, but at least for a vegan/vegetarian, this can't be beat! Two can eat for under 20 bucks.

The food is great! It meets and even surpasses the price.  Vegan BBQ platter with seitan, t-scram, collard greens, and texas toast? Are you kidding? Amazing. Not too mention they have a decent tofu scramble that is non-existent in Allston.  Veg burger, chili platter, and blueberry flapjacks! As for egg and carnivore fare, it looks good to me and that's saying a lot.

It's squeaky clean! And all veg stuff is completely separate from meaty stuff in the kitchen.  BIG PLUS. Though the place looks almost too new, like it needs time to gain the character that is lurking beneath.

The staff is so nice and tries so hard! As someone who is in the industry, I appreciate the attitude, humor, friendliness and comfort of traditional diner type service.  Not stuffy or pretentious at all.  That being said, good customers get good service.

Warning: If you go on a Saturday at like noon, expect to wait for your food! The kitchen needs to work on plating time and navigating small spaces. Seems short staffed, but as noted before I think this is a drag yourself up by your bootstraps type place.  I shall support good people trying to do a cool thing every time.  Can't wait to be a regular.

I, like many other reviewers, was excited to see a cool "diner" open in my neighborhood. My husband and I decided to try it out this weekend, and while I should offer the caveat that this was their first weekend open I must say I was really disappointed.

First off, we all know diner food is hang over cure food. That in mind I wanted to sit down and dig in as soon as possible. Tables were all full so we sat at the counter. Tip one: if you are indeed hung over, or maybe just want to enjoy your meal, don't sit at the counter, unless  you're into having things banged and slammed around you as the staff yells and complains to and about one another. As someone who has worked in the industry I can sympathize that things get crazy, but I don't need to hear orders barked at the waitresses in an awful tone while my coffee cup remains empty. I was offended FOR some of the staff- an uncomfortable environment to say the least.

So let's chalk that up to a rush and stress. Fine. Add on the fact that our food took forty minutes once ordered- and although we were warned the kitchen was backed up it's a mystery why an egg sandwich and biscuits and gravy (a make ahead dish I'd assume) would take that long when most of the other tables already had their food. They must've done hardly any prep work. When it did come out my biscuits were dense, although the gravy was tasty and well seasoned, and my husband's egg sandwich was kind of a joke. Toast, one very thing fried egg, and a small sausage link CUT IN HALF. For the money we expected something more substantial and left hungry.

This place has potential and I sincerely hope they'll improve, because we need us more diners in Boston.

I'm so glad there is a new diner in rock city!
I went for breakfast to beat the crowd (making the assumption that brunch would be extremely busy) and I was seated immediately at the bar.   Although it was the opening weekend, the staff seemed very knowledgeable about the menu and made great recommendations.  I enjoyed a breakfast sandwich on Texas toast with a huge helping of potatoes on the side.
The atmosphere was great-- super fun and eclectic.
There are only a few things I really at breakfast: a constant supply of coffee and water, good food, and low prices. If you are looking for the same... Allston Diner is your best bet.

There's finally a diner around that's open reasonable hours and has vegetarian/vegan options.  The menu was impressive, I ended up having an omelet with veggie sausage, mushrooms, american & aged cheddar cheese.  Came with homefries and toast.  Also shared a 'caramelized banana' short stack among a few people.  Everything was absolutely delicious!

It was really busy, but they still came back to refill coffees and waters pretty often, and the coffee was always a fresh pot.  Even came around a few times with complimentary pastries (scones, muffins, etc) to everyone who was still waiting for their orders.

Overall, really good food, fair prices, awesome atmosphere, great staff.  It's their first week open, so they still need to work out some kinks and get used to it being busy, but I'll definitely be going here anytime I'm in the area.

I was wary of coming here because of the negative reviews regarding delays but decided to give it a try for some homemade biscuits and gravy.

    I was not disappointed.

The staff were super friendly and responsive and kept checking to make sure our coffee pot was still full even though we kept saying we were fine.

The biscuits and gravy were perfectly moist and creamy and the homefries are just the way i like them (nicely seasoned and sliced uniformly thin).

Now I'm not sure about how this place would be on a weekend but definitely try it during the week. I am definitely coming back to try the cornbread waffles and chicken

2 stars, and not 1, only because it's new and may improve.

This place was appallingly understaffed for a Sunday morning.  Our food was near-cold and lackluster at best.  Despite this, it took around 45 minutes to get to the table.  The water did not get refilled until after the meal and our waitress made a snarky comment about it when I asked her to refill the glasses.

I'd wait a few months to see if they get their act together before going back.

Chicken and Waffles. CHIcken and WAFFles. CHICKEN AND WAFFLES.

I caught the early bus from Central Square to beat the crowd on Saturday morning and had a great time at Allston Diner. When I showed up it wasn't very busy, and the service was great. I had coffee and the cornbread waffles with fried chicken and was blown away. The coffee was great, and I've been having dreams about the chicken and waffles: I can't recommend them enough.

It looked like things were starting to get a little hectic when we were leaving, as the kitchen staff and servers were working out some of the new-restaurant kinks. I'd suggest coming early or expecting a bit of a wait if you're showing up during these first couple of weeks.

first of all, i am obsessed with breakfast.  like i would eat it for every meal at a diner if i could afford that life.   so i might be a little biased.

The decor is great, i love the tables.  we were seated at one wtih mind benders that kept my waking up brain busy for a while.  it's not a huge space but they use it well- and it was very clean (huge plus, duh).

this place is brand new, and i am so happy it's finally open.  i was there on saturday (as in the first saturday they were open. ever.) and yeah it was kind of a wait, but keep in mind that not only was it a SATURDAY MORNING IN ALLSTON but (again, this is where patience is key) their first weekend morning that they've ever seen or dealt with.

if you can't cut a new place some slack to work out the kinks, then that's on you and not on them if you ask me.

the food was absolutely delicious.  i had to work after i ate so i couldn't go all out (read: pancakes, eggs, toast, sausage, bacon, coffe, oj, etc) like i normally do so i kept it light - biscuit breakfast sandwich.  it was amazing.  the biscuit was incredibly moist and the bacon was delicious, not that crappy round sandwich bacon that everyone else seems to use.  my boyfriend got a black bean burrito breakfast sandwich and i didnt try it, but it looked pretty good.  his only commed was that it could have used a little more egg.  also we got some pancake bites from a friend and that was insanely good.  golden brown and fluffy, and this was during a rush.

also (and i think this is very important at breakfast) there was a wait for the coffee, but i didnt even have to drown it in cream and sugar, it was just good.  good coffee alone will bring me back for more.

the bill was reasonable, the staff was friendly and i will be back, most likely this weekend, to try as much more of the menu as i can.  welcome to the neighborhood allston diner.

This place finally opened and it rules. The food I had was good and cheap, and their coffee is way better than the stuff you usually get at a diner. I like that there's a bar to sit at, too. Breakfast tastes better when you're sitting on a stool. All the other breakfast places in Allston either closed or have glaring tragic flaws. Hopefully this place stays this good, the only bad thing I could think of happening is that it gets too popular and I will have to wait in line to eat there.

This place is OK, not stellar but A-OK.  If you want an impressive breakfast go someplace else, if you feel like having someone else cook for you and don't want to get dressed up, come here.
+:  Their hash does not come from a can and had carrot shavings in it (nice!).  Their staff's pleasant and attentive - coffee and water refills were constant.
-:  Given that the food was OK (not bad but not that tasty either), $14 is on the high side for breakfast and coffee.
While I wasn't blown away I would come back.  I'd rather pay more for average food and good service than go to, say, Union (see my review) where the food's better but people are walking out due to slow service.  Or Brighton Cafe where they ignore you even when you're the only person there.  I also like that it's super casual  - you can go in your gym clothes.
FYI - They take credit cards now.  And they don't seat parties larger than 4.  While I was there a big group came in and split into 2 tables.  Maybe in response to some of the service issues noted by previous reviews?

Went to the diner this weekend with my wife.   The food was very good.  My wife had a cheeseburger which she said was very good and I had the brisket breakfast, which was awesome (anytime you can combine BBQ and breakfast sign me up!).   The place had a crowd and we did wait a long time for our food.  The coffee refill was also slow coming (I am not sure about that 1 pot of coffee deal, I didn't really look).
Pro:  Delicious food and finally a place that has some breakfast promise in the area
Cons: Please tell the staff that coffee needs to be refilled at a faster pace, this is breakfast.
I will defintly be back, I think some of the issues I saw were just "first day jitter" type of stuff that will be ironed out over time.

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

I was very happy to see that this restaurant finally opened. My husband and I live right down the street and we've been looking forward to a new breakfast/lunch joint. We were not disappointed. For being open since Feb 1, the staff is doing a really good job. The breakfast we had was MUCH better than other places around here. I also want to say that the table next to us was really rude to one of the waiters and he still put on a smile for them, and apologized for their inconvenience (I think they were mad that the menu prices online were different from the REAL prices, which is true, but the waitstaff aren't the ones that put together the website...). I think, in time, whatever disorganization exists (as more people came in, they checked on people less), will all be settled once THEY settle in. I can't wait to go back and try more of their menu! I think this place has great potential to be an Allston hotspot.

OH AND AT LEAST AS OF NOW WHILE YELP SAYS THEY ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS, THEY DO NOT! I don't know if the machine was down (it might have been) but we missed the sign that said 'cash only' when we came in :X. Have cash just in case! :)

So I don't know what the actual deal with this place is, but I doubt these 5 star reviews are real. I was in there on Saturday around noon, and our experience was terrible. Our food took an hour and a half to arrive, and was cold upon arrival. The diner had one coffee pot for the entire place, so when the waitress would come refill your cup she would give everyone at the table a sip of coffee. We weren't offered any apologies for the ridiculousness of this place aside from the fact that "this is our first weekend."

The way I see it, in any sort of customer oriented business, opening weekend means having extra staff on- just in case. I only saw three staff members on, and god knows there was probably just one person in the kitchen. The manager didn't appear to be in either.

Many tables who arrived after us got their food first, but also many tables sat and waited forever for eggs. That's what I ordered, plain old over-easy eggs- nothing special.

Good luck Allston Diner, unfortunately I'm not interested in giving you a second chance for your overpriced mediocre food. Especially not planning on supporting a place that has false reviews written and a nasty tempered manager/pr person.

    PROS:
    Generally friendly waitstaff.
Decent coffee (if you can get it).
    Location.
    Food:  Decent homefries and coleslaw.

    CONS:
Food.  The egg sandwich looked like it was made by a six year old.  Bland, boring, tasteless.  The chicken salad sandwich was a mayonnaise-based salad with sliced grapes.  Not too bad.  Advertised as being served on a "baguette."  It came out on a cheap sub roll.  What a shame.  The sandwich had nothing else on it: bland chicken salad on a sub roll.  No onion, lettuce, tomato, etc.

Price.  2 eggs, homefries, and choice of ham, bacon, or sausage for $7.99.  I'm happy to pay this price if the food is good.  This food is barely decent.  They don't have the clout to be able to price things this way.

Atmosphere.  You feel uncomfortable when you're there.  It seems like they kind of tossed some things together and called it a restaurant.  Nothing on the walls, awkward seating, no character.

Service.  Though our waitress was pleasant, there was a big problem.  They literally have one pot of coffee for the entire place.  Had to wait 5 minutes for my first cup, and then another long period for a refill.  Other customers there were complaining about it as well.

    ----------------

Sure, they just opened.  But I'm not certain how much time will help them.  Go and check it out.  It just feels like a place opened up by people who may have never been to a restaurant before.

This is a hot new diner, without the usual grunge found in some of Allston's best spots.  Very clean and efficient operation where you can get a seat or have an unbelievable breakfast sandwich.  I expect this place will be a line out the door when word gets around. The potatoes are fantastic, the traditional breakfasts are as ordered (eggs over medium or bacon well). The biscuits and gravy is a prize winner. They have vegan options as well. Try it if you like breakfast.

My wife and I stopped in for breakfast here after coming in to town to visit our son who is a student. We were unaware that this was a new place, so we were quite horrified by the ridiculously slow service. It took over an hour for our food also and we simply ordered eggs. I mean how long does it take to fry an egg? Anyway, I would probably not give it such a low rating, but the staff didn't appear apologetic at all. There was no explanation nor any compensation. It appears as though the place is run by a few college kids who have never worked in the restaurant business before. Sorry for the bad review guys, but you really need to be more accommodating towards your customers.  We are not your enemy!!

Although just getting on it's feet the Allston Diner is a great place for breakfast all day. I went at about 3 in the afternoon and wanted something I would consider brunch. I got the Cornbread Chicken and Waffles, a dish I had only seen venturing the country at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. It comes with your choice of syrup or a side of sausage gravy which was also excellent. I'm a sweet meat kind of guy so I went with the syrup, i would highly recommend getting a side of bacon with this dish. They promptly brought coffee to our table. The interior is a mix of retro and comic book styling with each table having its own lacquer covered theme. The wait staff is friendly and attentive, maybe coming over to the table a little too much, but being a new business this is proof that they want to make sure you're not going anywhere else for breakfast or lunch. The chef also came out from the kitchen from time to time to ask how the food was!! I almost forgot the hash, its made from corned beef only an irish woman could cook and not the broken down gritty hash that is the usual breakfast fare. Garnished with potato and carrots it reminded me of boiled dinners years past, a great take on an often overlooked and overdone component of diner food. If this place had a jukebox and people had been at the counter ordering milkshakes this would be a place of 50's mythic proportions. It's nice to see some old world craft in a modern world. These guys just did open and obviously there is room for improvement, but I feel like every restaurant needs a little time to break in. This place should become an allston staple to grab breakfast even in the afternoon, I for one am a fan and will being going back as often as I'm in the city.

I stopped in with my girlfriend and some buds last weekend to give this place a shot and while I've read some of the complaints on here, by and large we had a great time. First off, It's huge to have a new breakfast joint with vegan/veg options and I'm excited to watch this place grow based on that alone. When entering you can definitely tell it's a new business as the diner feels like it isn't finished being decorated, but once the eating begins it's obvious they're onto something special. The BBQ satan was deeeelicous and my friend said the Monte Cristo sandwich was awesome. The coffee was surprisingly strong and our waitress made us feel very at home. My other friends vegan scramble seems like it could have been cooked slightly longer, and the the portion could have been a little bigger, but besides that it wasn't bad at all. I look forward to seeing this place work out the kinks and will absolutely be trying it again. Hopefully down the line they get beer and wine!

Visited during the weekday in the morning. By the time we ordered we were the only party in the restaurant, so no excuses on a rush. Server was very attentive with the coffee, problem was the kitchen and uneven performance. My friend ordered French toast, while it was advertised as Texas sized, it really was not as big as real Texas sized toast. It came unadulterated without anything else. I ordered the brisket w two over easy eggs. While the potatoes that came with it was fabulously cooked with just the right amount of salt and rosemary, the eggs were over cooked. Over easy doesn't mean over well done. The brisket was good, but I found a hair in the bottom layer. Being previously in the food industry I know it can be difficult and did not make a fuss nor bring it to the attention of the staff -- since they certainly looked like they needed the money. The 70s music was a hit with this oldie as well as the cool diner and comic book look. While wait staff has definitely improved from prior reviews looks like the kitchen is still experiencing growing pains.
