I hate this place-and by hate it I mean it made me feel like I was sitting in a corner being punished for eating such, decadent food. The squash soup with sage was light and warm. It was the mac and cheese that made me feel like such a bad girl-so amazingly creamy! The lemon pesto was also enjoyed at our table. Leave out the fact that the waitress gave us the wrong bottle of wine and that we had to listen to a wannabe Veruca Salt talk next to us (as tables are close together), this place makes being bad easy.

I am shocked!  Shocked, I tell you, that I actually enjoyed my meal last night at Allium.  Yes, it was only 'at the bar', and yes, it was with one of my favorite people in the world, BUT it was good.  Dare I say it?  Good!

I have avoided Allium for over a year now after having been disappointed by lackluster food and bad bar service more than once.  However, last night, Billy ruled over the bar, and worked his special brand of alchemy.  The dishes we shared (veal sausage pappardelle, wild mushroom stew with 64-degree egg, and russet fries with homemade ketchup) were all nuanced and delicious.  Plus, it was one of those magical nights in The Berkshires where familiar faces abound and you remember why you live here.

I rarely question my judgment.  (My therapist and I have been working on this.)  Last night is making me do just that, question my judgment of Allium.  Now, Allium, I warn you, do not let me down the next time I show up.  I'm not sure when that will be, so you'd better be on your toes and ready to rumble.  I have faith in you...again.

Excellent food and service. Good wines by the glass. I'm not a fussy goody but I hate poor service and blah food. Allium delivered excellent friendly informed service --timely food.  A class A experience.  I need look no further in this town .  The local beef burger was cooked to medium-rare perfection for my wife who is very fussy on these matters. My pesto pasta was very subtle and made me question whether I should ever try doing it myself again!  This is a god place--try it.

So my Husband drove up to Great Barrington for the day with no real plan on where to eat or what to do. We got there around noon and hadn't eaten yet so we started walking around to find a place to eat. Lucky for us we came across Allium. They were serving Brunch. My husband ordered the eggs Benedict and i got the chicken and waffles. Mine was delicious and my husband said it was worth the 90min drive just for his.( i don't like eggs so i would have to take his word for it). I also had a Bloody Mary which was really good and my husband had the French press coffee which makes him really really happy. The service was wonderful. Will definitely go back next time we go to Great Barrington.

No big deal. Granted, it was between summer and ski season, but the place was empty and our party of three felt like we were interfering with the staff's downtime. Food was marginal. Menu stated brioche french toast -- but was served using sliced bread. Eggs appeared to be reconstituted, not fresh. Bloody Marys had no discernible alcohol and they were bland. And the room was cold and drafty. Will not go back -- lots of other fun places in Great Barrington to eat.

Had a fantastic dinner tonight at allium with three of my favorite people. Cheese plate had a great selection of local cheese and was diverse in texture and flavor, but were all cows milk cheeses (kind of weird during summer...). My boyfriend had the steamed pork buns and the pork belly was super tasty. I had the trotters, which were perfectly seasoned; the remoulade was a bit excessive with the naturally gelatinous texture so I simply left it on the plate and enjoyed the crunchy sweet carrots with the trotter. Our entrees were exceptional. My father had the pork shoulder which was visually stunning, my step mother enjoyed the cavatelli with mushrooms, and my boyfriend had the roasted chicken (perfectly cooked! The airline breast was moist and the skin was crispy, quite possibly the best cooked chicken I've tried in any restaurant). My scallops were pricey ($32) but worth every penny. Four HUGE scallops cooked flawlessly, served over fresh corn and porchini mushrooms. OMG I will have that as my last meal please. Our waitress was awesome and service was impeccable with strong attention to detail.

Whimsy trumps taste at Allium.   I like adventuresome menu items but the chef here is over the top.  Two jokey examples:  1/ Sweetbreads "Buffalo Style" Celery Leaves, Bayley Hazen Blue Cheese.  2/ Hudson Valley Foie Gras Peanut Butter + Raspberry "Gellée.  In both instances fine textured subtle food is way overpowered by the recipe.  The sweetbreads are prepared like chicken wings, with the deep fried hot sauce exterior dominating the sweetbreads beyond recognition.  Ditto with the Hudson Valley Foie Gras, which is not a slab of liver at all but a pate derived from it and thus is seriously mis-described on the menu.

For those who like basics, the steak is on the small side and is served sliced unless you specify not to.  The sides are minimal.  [I had the whole fish and two small boiled potatoes would not have been out of place on the plate.]

If the fruit crisp is any example, stay away from the desserts.  It was all cinnamon and very little peach.  Some new tasters are needed in the kitchen.

But the room is pleasant and uncrowded, though the servers could use more training to come up to the price level of the restaurant.

Conclusion:  order very carefully and make sure the server explains the dishes in detail.

I went to this restaurant last weekend for my 30th birthday, and loved every single bite! I wish I lived out in the Berkshires so I could go back for another dinner. We had a reservation, but it looked like the bar was really great for just stopping in to grab a quick bite with friends.

The atmosphere here is great--relaxed and comfortable, while still being refined. There's a ton of lovely wood and great light fixtures, and the silverware was really shiny, heavy, and beautiful (as a long-term bartender and server myself, I notice these things).

Above all, though, is the food. And the drinks! I could happily sit in a cardboard box if the food is worth it, and the food here is delicious! The menu has small plates, medium plates, and entrees, and amazing desserts. We shared the seared scallops with sweet corn puree, cod fritters with harissa aioli, and then my boyfriend got the burger--a decadent concoction of beef, bacon, cheese, heirloom tomato, and a fried egg--and I got steak frites, made of the BEST grass-fed beef I've had in a very long time. The restaurant is farm-to-table, and as far as I could tell most menu items were local. The drinks are amazing, too. Definitely try the Pyrenees cocktail! I'm not really a fan of the St. Germaine trend, but this is Elderflower done right!

If you're in the Berkshires or anywhere near Great Barrington, go to Allium!

Had an over-priced and disappointing dinner here. The entree selection is very limited and if you are vegetarian, don't even bother. I ordered the soft shell crab appetizer: one crab, 17$. It was a bit dry, the breading lacked flavor and it sat on greens that were stringy and difficult to digest. A white sauce with bacon crumbles did not help. My friend had a pork tenderloin which was good but the potion was very small for an entree. It had bacon too. A veal pate was delicious. The service was very good, friendly and professional. Allium needs to reduce the "cuteness" factor and realize that not every odd combination makes for a good meal and bacon isn't the answer.

Allium has recently had a change in menu and now I think it's the best restaurant in town. They have a constantly changing selection of small plates, appetizers and entrees, all with fresh ingredients, locally sourced. The selection, taste, presentation now rival some of the better restaurants in NY and the prices are so much better. They serve good wine in proper wine glasses. The decor is great. High recommed you try it out for yourself.
