What a great find while driving through Pagosa Springs - Yelp did not let me down!

This place used to be a house and it has been beautifully redone to house a wonderful restaurant.

I ordered the lamb shank with goat cheese polenta. It was fabulous. Best lamb shank I have ever had - the sauce on it was outstanding as well.

My gf ordered the pork chop with candied shallot demi glace and garlic mashed. She was pleased with her decision also.

If we ever drive to Mesa Verde again this will be a must stop.

We at here for the first time last night and it was wonderful

We were just in town for the evening and at the recommendation of the bartender, as some patrons of our hotel, we took the short walk over.

The decor was very pleasant, nice but without being overly formal.

They had a nice selection of alcohols and wine, we selected a primativo from a vineyard we are a fan of.

At the bartenders suggestion, we go the Seared tuna and green curry mussels.  Both were fantastic, but the tuna was out of this world.  Seared with black and white sesame seeds, and topped with a wasabi, soy cream sauce that was fantastic.

Prices were reasonable, and service was adequate, but not exceptional.  We came in at 8:30 and felt that they were really wanting us to leave halfway through our meal.

Putting all the unused chairs up on tables was a not so subtle hint.

We will probably avoid if we are in town and wanting a later dinner, but if you are eating on old people time this could be the place for you.

Hip settings, great food and exciting dishes.

FOOD - Seared (coated w/ sesame) tuna dish was out of this world.  The mayonnaise, wasabi + soy sauce combo was super-licious.  The pizza was good, nice crest.  The house salad's medley of greens and dressing was interestingly balanced.

ATMOSPHERE - a bit formal and nice.  Not stuffy.

LOGISTICS - on highway 160, lot of parking around it.

CREATIVITY - quite a few original dishes.

Easily one of the most enjoyable meals we have had in a very long time.

Our server, Julie, was knowledgeable and friendly. The drinks were great and the meals delicious. Flourless chocolate cake topped it off

If the food had tasted anywhere near as delicious as the menu read this would be a 5 star review.

The waitress told me her favorite dish is the petite fillet, which comes with wasabi mashed potatoes and bok choy. When the dish came there were no potatoes and the  bok choy was sort of wilted and raw! The waitress winced and said that's how it comes! And the mashed potatoes? "oh yeah we ran out of that." !!!! Instead I got a sad excuse at "fiesta rice" which was soggy and flavorless. My fillet, albeit was good but was overbooked to my specification.

After a glass of wine, burnt jalapeño bread and the fillet it was a $45 very average meal.

Friends have remarked perhaps this place has gone down hill. I wouldn't know, but they'd better lower the prices if they are going to be half-hearted about their meals. If you care less, I pay less.

Alley House has been a long time favorite of mine.  the food and the service is truly outstanding.  everything on the menu is a bit on the high-side in terms of price but it's worth it, particularly the petite filets.  but i've heard rave reviews for basically everything else on the menu as well.

the staff is probably the best in town.  in pagosa you usually get either great food or great service, but hardly ever both.  Alley House is one of those rare exceptions in that it has both.

i would give the Alley House 5 stars if it wasn't so loud inside at times.  it's doesn't take too many patrons to get the abient noise indoors well above a desired level.  but if this isn't that big of a deal to you (even if it is), the food is worth it.

in the summer, the outside deck is open and is a great place to enjoy the cool Colorado evenings.

oh, and during tourist season (summer and dec-jan), i'd highly recommend making a reservation.

    enjoy...

For being a small town this would probably be the best food in town, but being from Denver it was just ok.

Started out with mussels and crab cakes... the crab cakes could use a little more flavor but the little salad they had with it had a great dressing. The mussels.. .well 1/2 were ok and the other 1/2 had a very odd taste to them and some were not even cooked all the way (being still closed)

Our main courses were good but again nothing spectacular.

Desserts were very good... apple crisp was warm and flavorful and the flour-less chocolate cake was thick and chocolaty just like I like it.

The intimate feel of the restaurant was great, the bartender was quite fun and made my drinks well even though he was in training... our wine guy Chris was veryvery good at suggesting a great wine and we had 3 bottles between my family :)

Overall it is the best for Pagosa so try it since you are in the town :)

Had the NY strip, gf had the paella. I really enjoyed mine hers was so-so. Walked in and got the last unreserved table and thought about 15 minutes later the place was full. Service was good if quirky.

This is what we were hoping for when we asked for a suggestion from our B&B.

Gorgeous little house with seating inside and out and very friendly folks.  We asked for some recommendations (and gluten-free options) and had a terrific meal.

I got the grilled scallops wrapped in bacon over an Asian slaw - nice and balanced and exactly the lighter dinner I asked for.  The slaw makes it - with a bit of spice and sweetness.

My wife had salmon dish, cooked perfectly which she throughly enjoyed.

We also shared the beet salad - which was huge and tipped us off that we were in for a good meal.

When we're back in Pagosa Springs or nearby, we're back at the Alley House Grille.

For being in a small tourist town, Alley House Grille really delivers a big city dining experience.

We almost always stop in for dinner at the Alley House when we are in or driving through Pagosa Springs.  We discovered this place via a recommendation from the front desk at The Hot Springs Resort, and we have never had a bad meal there.  Sometimes the service is a ever so slightly spotty, but I attribute that to the fact that we usually arrive right before closing, and the only server on duty has other tasks to complete before going home.  Even so, that spotty service is usually better than the regular service I get at other restaurants in Denver.  One time we knew we weren't going to get into town before their kitchen closed, so we called in a to-go order.  They timed everything perfectly so that our food was hot and freshly cooked when we arrived (about 20 minutes after the kitchen shut down - I think the kitchen kept cooking after 9 PM just for us), had utensils for us and everything bagged and ready to go.

The food is always top notch.  From the Bruschetta app to the scallops entree, to small pizzas that my wife and I split.  My only complaint about the food is I sometimes feel like the plate should have a little more of the main course, side dish, and veggie on it.  However, I never leave hungry.

You can't go wrong at The Alley House Grille!

Good food and service, not the most exciting menu though. Bruschetta app was best part of the meal.

Thank you Bobby T for steering us towards The Alley House !!!!

Hands down, this was the best meal of our Vacation Week, and we would have eaten here more often if they were open Sunday and Monday ( they reopen during season ).

Reservations were made the day prior, and our table was waiting even though we arrived early to cocktail a bit prior to dinner.

The Host was adorable -- cute, funny, and very helpful -- if he wasn't working, we would have invited him to have a drink with us.
Our Server was professional, businesslike and ran her tables like she owned the restaurant. Timing was perfect. Courses never overlapped, and she had an uncanny way of knowing when we were done vs just taking a break.

Enough on the service -- it's about the food, right.

The food was THE BEST of the week. We started with mussels in a heavenly broth which went nicely with the wine --
I have to note: not a grain of sand or grit in these tiny perfect mussels -- really nice starter.
Entrees were Ahi and Seafood Udon, which was almost Chippino like, but had Udon instead of pasta, and Asian inspired broth vs tomato based.

    Perfection !!!!

I even hesitated on the Ahi, relaying the recent frozen Ahi dinner I had at the Lobby in Denver.
No frozen fish here. It was perfectly seared with a flavorful jasmine rice accompaniment.
The Udon had tons of mussels ( overkill with the mussel appy; next time we'll sub them out), clams, shrimp, scallops, and a beautiful piece of salmon.

    YUM

I wanted so badly to try a desert, but alas, there was just no room.

We're already planning a quick getaway late Summer, and the Alley House will be part of the plan -- even if we have to drive serious miles to get there.

If you're going to splurge while in Pagosa, this is the place to do it.  Interesting restored home setting with a very attentive waitstaff.  Good selection of alcohol.  They have a varied menu but in my opinion, try to hard to be unique.

My friend had elk loin which was quite tasty and I had the ahi tuna.  Definitely save room for dessert!  One of the owners is a pastry chef (or so our waitress said) and both desserts we had were great.  The flourless dark chocolate cake was amazing and my friend's apple cobbler was pretty good too.

This place will fill up, reservations recommended!  If you're looking for something cheaper, head across the street to Farrago's (same owners).

The Alley House Grilled in Pagosa Springs was a welcome retreat following a long day at powder laden Wolf Creek.  The atmosphere was very cozy, especially with our table in arm's reach of the fireplace.  The manager saved us this nice table, because we called ahead for reservations, and even though another couple entered the establishment before us, he honored our reservation.
The menu at the Alley House seemed modern American, with plenty of pasta and vegetarian dishes, to accompany the pizza and seafood specials.  I remember a fantastic spinach and pear salad with Humbolt Fog cheese and a great manchego, basil, and sun dried tomato bruschetta.  For the main course, my wife had the eggplant pizza, which I felt was thyme overkill, but I had an excellent grilled polenta with mushrooms, zucchini and sun dried tomato.
We will definitely visit the Alley House Grille again, when we return to Pagosa Springs!
