Review from John S.

I needed to re-wire 2 bathrooms and add a couple of dedicated, grounded circuits in my house and have the electric sub-panel cleaned up.
I hired Alley Electric after extensive research. I was not disappointed.
Wes and crew were professional, knowledgeable, and punctual. I requested them to either wear shoe covers or not wear shoes inside the house. Between the three of them, they must of entered/exited the front door 50+ times. Not once did they forget to take off their shoes. Very impressed! Wes made improvement recommendations but was not pushy. He even pointed out which ones might need professional installation and which ones could be done by me. I would definitely use Alley Electric again in the future. Highly recommend.Comment from Wesley S. of Alley Electric 3/19/2012

They were very sincere and knowledgable. The wife and husband tandem works. You feel that they know what they are talking about and real experts of their craft. I feel safe now knowing that they went around and tested every power plug in the house. The yelp coupon saved me $25 which is very useful nowadays.

We hired Alley Electric to install recessed lights throughout our entire house last summer. I normally like to wait a few months to write these types of reviews in case anything goes wrong and we have NOT had any problems with their work since the installation 9 months ago. We LOVE our new lights! Wesley and Alina were very professional from the get-go. I could tell they were very knowledgeable and experienced after speaking with them about our needs. Our project took 3 days (as anticipated) and they always showed up on time everyday and they were very pleasant to work with. Alina even helped clean up all the debris each day before they left. Their pricing is very reasonable as well. I highly recommend Alley Electric for anyone looking for an experienced electrician with a high level of professionalism and competitive pricing.

I called Alley to fix two outlets that were non-functional, as well as to get a bid on having two overhead fans / lights installed in 2 bedrooms. Wes and one of his guys came out the next day and had the outlets working in no time. While writing the bid, Wes saved me money by suggesting that we skip the fans if our goal is to list the house, since must stagers recommend against that. I appreciated his honesty, despite Wes' recommendation being in contrast to his own business interests. That same day I had a bid in hand, the price was very fair and we had him out a few days later to install the lights. His guys showed up on time, were very courteous, verified that shoes in the house was OK, did the work quickly, cleanly and the result looks great. Couldn't recommend these guys enough.

We brought in Alley Electric for a complete electrical overhaul of our 1927 bungalow. Everything was upgraded - the service from the street, the panel, every bit of wiring, every switch, every fixture.
Wes came in for the estimate, and it was obvious from the get-go that he was extremely knowledgeable about electrical codes and requirements, as well as what would be desirable for livability. We spoke to a number of other contractors, but Wes was really head and shoulders above the others.
And when it came time for the work to be done, Wes and Alina were complete professionals. Their staging area was kept immaculately organized, they cleaned up after themselves every day, and Wes was in communication with us regularly on the progress. He even educated us on how to use the ceiling fans we selected, and replaced the plug on our stove when we realized it wasn't grounded. (It was a really old stove!)
At the end of the day, Alley Electric turned in a complete electrical remodel of our home quickly and professionally. We don't doubt for a moment that we made the right choice!Comment from Wesley S. of Alley Electric 9/29/2010

Thanks to the reviews on Yelp, I decided to give them a try. I'm not sure why those reviews aren't here anymore, but I've heard it's because Yelp has a reputation for taking off reviews unless a business pays them for advertising.
Wesley came to my home back in October to see the work I needed to have done and gave me a bid. With my Dad being an electrical engineering consultant he had plenty of other electricians he could have referred me to. Upon reviewing my estimate, in short he said "it's a very good bid, just go with it."
I finally saved enough to make it happen and had the fans in my bathrooms, kitchen light, and backyard light replaced...and finally got GFCI outlets replacements for both the kitchen and bathrooms. He did quite a bit more, but I won't get into that.
Wesley and Alina were extremely professional throughout the entire process. He said it would take 2 days, and he actually completed the work even faster than I could have imagined. After each day, they both cleaned up everything and to a point almost left the area cleaner than it had been to start with.
I know I have some other things to do, and know who I'm calling for electrical work.
They're licensed electricians. If you get a lower quote from a handyman there's a reason for that. You get what you pay for. I'm not saying all handymen are bad, but unless you want to risk an electrical fire go with a pro...I've had to learn the hard way.Comment from Wesley S. of Alley Electric 7/27/2010

Alley Electric (Wesley & Alina) is one of those rare finds! They were an absolute pleasure to work with and made the entire process easy and stress free. In the process of updating our recently purchased house, we've worked with a number of various contractors and Alley Electric was by far at the top of the list. I only wish that every contractor was as good to work with. I give them my highest recommendation!
I had Wesley do a variety of electrical jobs at my beautiful 1928 house. He upgraded the panel and added an additional panel to my garage (which I was converting to a photography studio). He added new circuits and new wiring to our house and also completely wired the garage.
First of all, Wesley is always extremely professional. He knows his stuff and always made sure things were done the right way. The job went easily with absolutely no issues and no stress.
The work was always clean and he did a great job of avoiding any damage to our old plaster walls. They always cleaned up after the job was done and were always very respectful of our home.
Wesley went above and beyond expectations. For instance, one day, when I was having the drywall installed in the garage, I realized I needed a last minute change to the wiring in the garage. The drywall guys were getting ready to drywall that area, so there was serious time pressure to get it done. When Wesley arrived, he got right on it and quickly got the change made. He scaled a wall, and ran down the top of a fence to do it. Most excellent service!!
Wesley is very straightforward to deal with. He has consistent pricing so you always know how much things are going to cost. And the final bill is exactly what the estimate was (unless, of course, you add things at the last minute).
I give Alley Electric my highest recommendation for both small and big jobs. -

Awesome service! I heard of Alley Electric through a friend who had some work done by Wesley, so I called for an estimate to have a bathroom fan installed, a second switch installed in bathroom (so I'd have fan and lights on separate switches), and an outdoor outlet put in on my back patio. The estimate was extremely reasonable and I scheduled the work. Wes and Alina were on time, easily coped with some problems (I'd bought the wrong size fan, the second switch required a little cutting through some sheetrock, AND I'd bought the wrong type of outlet for outdoor use), they were careful about covering my floor and bathroom fixtures to prevent any damage, were really friendly and fun to talk to, and the charges were exactly as estimated. I highly recommend and will use them again if I ever need electrical work done.

Excellent experience. We needed to have 2 ceiling fans and a light installed in our kitchen in May. Wesley worked with our schedule to visit the house to write up the quote, and also worked with us to find a suitable day to do the job.
They arrived promptly at 8:30 AM on the day we scheduled and were courteous and professional. What was even more impressive was how quickly the work was completed: roughly 3 hours, including attic work and adding switches. Before they left, the areas where they worked were cleaner than when they started, and the boxes for the fans/lights were saved and set aside.
We highly recommend Wesley and Alley Electric and are looking forward to working with them again in the future for our small electrical jobs.Comment from Wesley S. of Alley Electric 5/16/2011

My husband and I moved to a new house, and we had our outlets upgraded as needed (GFI). We upgraded our power from 100 amps to 200 amps; remove an old subpanel and replaced it was a junction box, and had a new main panel installed; we also had some light fixtures repaired. We got bids from a few different electricians and selected Wes because his proposal was the most sound and reasonable to us.
We will be using Wes from now on -- he's good people. We found this electrician to be honest, considerate, friendly, and professional. -

Wow!...great service and very professional!
I work in real estate and needed a licensed, bonded, & insured electrician quickly for a job...Alley Electric came through with flying colors. They had an opening same day, came out to the job site on right on scheduled time, reviewed the job & gave a quote...then did the job on the spot after I approved the bid! Wes and Alina were very professional. Wes did all the wiring work in under an hour & even pointed out a few items to bring to the buyer's attention. -

Let me tell you how Wesley has helped me. When I started a complete remodel of my home I called an electrician out of the newspaper to install some can lighting, outlets and other stuff. Wow, the dangers of not checking licensing and peer reviews. When things started "disappearing" from my house I got rid of the guy and found Wesley through Angie's List. What a difference, the bootleg electrician not only stole from me but also wired EVERYTHING dangerously wrong. Wesley took pictures, showed me what was wrong and gave me a price. Ended up being only marginally more expensive than the thief ( less if you add the value of the stolen items!) . Fast forward three years later and I am still using Wesley for all my electrical issues. He has done it all, a whole new kitchen remodel wiring, more cans, outdoor, new panel you name it. He is always calm, clean, neat, prompt, gives you a good price and sticks with it, and KNOWS what he is doing. So I am enjoying my house and have the peace of mind that the work was done right.

FAIR UPFRONT PRICING. COMPETENT PROFESSIONAL
Wednesday 4:30PM I called Alley Electric. Quite a few lights and power outlets were without power. The woman who answered the phone said he could come by on his way down from Oakland at around 6:30PM and take a look. She quoted a fair price, right on the phone.
Wes came by and looked at the CFE outlet which we said normally was the problem. He also looked at several other switches before heading out to the circuit box in the Garage. He came back into the house in about 10 minutes and gave us the diagnoses. PG&E was supplying only half the necessary power to the house. (One phase instead of two is what he said.) He took me out to the the circuit breaker box and showed me with his electrical detecting device that only 1/2 the circuits were active.
He then took me out to the meter and showed me that only one of two wires was supplying power to the house. He said our roof connection seemed to look okay and he suspected the problem was on the power pole. He provided the number for PG&E and put the cover back on the box.
PG&E came out a few hours later and the problem was fixed.
I asked Wesley about rewiring the house and he said that he would quote
$XX per outlet or light switch
$XX per 20AMP circuit line.
$300 for pulling permits and attending the inspection.
Actual Permit Price from the City.
He also said that we would have to upgrade our PGE line coming in to current code and that would cost $QQQQ. He then provided a rough verbal quote and asked us to let him know when we were ready for a written quote.
I really like his professional skills, friendly manner, and straight forward honest pricing. -

Bottom line: unprofessional response to errors made on the job smacks of taking his good reviews and customers for granted; especially in this down economy. Also, they may be better for more 'behind-the-scenes' electrical work vs finish work like recessed lighting.
It almost feels strange to write this review in the face of such stellar marks for this company, but I feel that my experience may not be an aberration and that others should know that Alley Electric, while probably overall a good company, should be approached with some vigilance and caution.
Wesley came out and gave us a bid. He was professional, knowledgeable, courteous and submitted a reasonably priced bid. The main part of our project was recessed lighting for our living room. The written proposal called for six 5" canisters and I subsequently e-mailed Wesley with a URL of a particular trim I wanted. He replied back "I'll find you something nice" -- this failure on my part to insist on details turned out to be part of the problem. Expecting that he had taken the week or so interim time to pre-order the requisite supplies, he and Alina showed up on the morning of the job with what seemed like lights purchased from the local hardware superstore. And, of course, not with the trim I had requested. This was apparent later in the morning after Wesley belatedly realized that he had purchased 6" (larger) cans instead. By then, he had already made several 3" linear cuts and one 6" hole in my pristine white ceiling. They then went to the nearby Home Depot from which they called and said that 5" cans weren't available and suggested 4" cans instead. I approved the change but requested 2 additional cans to make up for the smaller beam coverage. As an aside, I subsequently found the 5" cans in stock at my nearby Home Depot.
Long story short, the job turned out below expectations. Wesley installed the now eight 4" cans, but two of them were off by three inches and the light coverage was uneven (shadow alleys) due to the smaller beams. Also, I now had several areas of the ceiling that I needed to repair, including a large chunk of the wayward 6" hole. (During the bid process I was assured that the ceiling holes would be just right and wouldn't need any patching.) Otherwise, Alina and Wesley did a fine job on the other parts of the project. Alina was very courteous in making sure everything was clean and tidy all along the way. But even given the significant errors, Wesley never apologized for the mistakes or offered to make me whole, as one might expect from a professional. In fact, when pointed out the erroneous cuts on my ceiling, he sharply reminded me about the no drywall patching part of his contract and sarcastically offered to smear some spackle on these "minor" defects when pressed further. I was absolutely flabbergasted by this lack of professionalism. I had offered what I thought was an extremely fair settlement of just paying the initial bid amount (i.e. not footing the bill for the extra two 4" cans that were made necessary by their error). The nonchalant and defensive attitude was astounding. I received neither an offer to help compensate me for the extra drywall repair I had to now do, much less a genuine apology. It wasn't until Alina stepped into the dispute that Wesley grudgingly took my payment. I was especially offended that an insinuation was made that I was trying to rip him off. I would much rather have perfectly installed recessed lights as was outlined to me in the proposal, then to argue over a couple hundred bucks of somebody's hard earned money and deal with the subsequent extra repair work in this case.
In summary, I will obviously not use this contractor again. I'm not sure if Wesley just had a bad day or he is taking his good reviews and customers for granted, but his behavior was clearly unacceptable. Despite e-mailing him after the fact, I have not received any response. Alley Electric may still be a worthwhile contractor to consider for your project, given their previous positive track record, but do yourself a favor and make sure to double-check everything so that you don't have the same results we unfortunately did. P.S. I do have pictures of various stages of this work to post if it would be helpful to anybody.Comment from Wesley S. of Alley Electric 7/30/2010

The bottom line: They were polite, prompt, reasonably priced and gave us a same-day (same evening!) appointment. They were also very friendly.
If you want more details: We seemed to have a blown fuse that, unfortunately, powered most of the appliances in our kitchen. I called around 5:30pm and asked if they could give us an appointment for the next day; Alina, the co-owner (they are a husband and wife team) said she was sorry, but they were booked for the next several days. However, she then asked what the problem was, and when I said I was pretty sure it was just a blown fuse, she said she'd call back between 7:00 and 7:30 to see if they could come out that night. She did call, a little after 7:00, and they came right at 7:45 as promised and did not charge extra for the late hour. Since the problem turned out to be embarrassingly easy to fix--at least embarrassing to me and my husband--they even offered us a 20% discount, which we greatly appreciated. While I don't think any electricians are cheap, I'd definitely say their price is fair, especially considering that they did not charge more for an evening appointment. I will certainly use them again if needed.Comment from Wesley S. of Alley Electric 5/3/2009
