While walking around Uptown I stumbled across this place. This place is pretty cool. Checkered floor if I remember correctly and a cool painting of Samuel L. Jackson on the wall in the back.
I don't remember the actual name of the plate that I got but it was chicken and mashed potatoes. I got that and it came along with a salad. The salad was a salad. Nothing spectacular about it. When my main dish arrived it was SMOTHERED with GRAVY!! It was so good! I love gravy! I finished my entire plate. Every bite I took was perfectly moistened with gravy. I was very much pleased.
The gravy fries are a bit much. The gravy that was on the fries was a dark brown color and tasted a helluva lot saltier. I wasn't really a fan of how salty they were.

Service was good.  Our server was attentive and the place is CLEAN. I'd come back here to stuff my face with some more gravy. freal.

OOO and they have a big ass TV to watch the basketball games on!! SCORE.

    unfortunately, this place appears closed.

it was a good place, so this is unfortunate.

i really don't understand how so many restaurants open and close w/out people knowing about them.  how are people getting the money to start a restaurant and not advertise or do something to get word out there?  seems the city drops the ball in properly promoting uptown, because this place had way too good of food to die such a quick death.

Does he LOOK like a BITCH!?!?

    http://www.yelp.com/bi...

I couldn't stop thinking about Sam Jackson when the waiter took my order and this actually ran through my head....

I don't wanna hear about no motherf*ckin' ifs! All I wanna hear from your ass is, "You ain't got no problem, Cesar... I'm on the motherf*cker. Go back in there, chill them nig*az out and wait for the brisket gravy fries which should be coming DIRECTLY."

    BRISKET GRAVY FRIES w CHEESE

    http://www.yelp.com/bi...

A meal in itself! Tasty Hot steak fries topped with a tender quality brisket doused with a rich saucy gravy and then sprinkled lovingly with some cheddar cheeeeese. I could barely finish these...but I gave it the 'ol college try cuz they were so damn good!

Oh! Thanks to Michelle T and Robin B for the heads up, you're both awesome by the way! The fries were kinda lonely so I added a little meat and BACON action to the equation...

    BACON BLUE CHEESEBURGER

    http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Great medium rare beef patty charred on the outside, juicy on the inside. Sweet yet spicy BBQ sauce topped with tangy Blue cheese crumbles. At least two or three salty, thick, crispy strips of BACON....you even get some lightness from the fresh lettuce and this is all housed in a soft, fluffy bun. Some unexpected deliciousness in the heart of Whittier.

Hamburgers! The cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go home and have a heart attack.

Truly a place where "everybody knows your name."

The best beef in Uptown, and super friendly wait staff and owner.

I always get the salad and ask for brisket on top. It is tasty, and their special secret dressing makes in perfect!! When I am not on a diet, I love the burrito and Chips and salsa.

Cheap, good quality and friendly service.

What more can you ask for? the menu is simple, not too many choices, but what they do offer is what you ask for. My party dug the ribs and I enjoyed the chicken with salad plate.

French fries, chicken and salad were all tasty and great portion for the size. Can't beat that with a bat! So you can get with this....

Place is decent for BBQ in Uptown Whittier.

It's a no frills , simple non-fancy spot. The ribs and brisket gravy fries were pretty good for the price. Although the service isn't that great, we had to walk up and grab a menu and then I stood there for a few minutes until the girl working asked if I wanted to order something. Not the typical type of service I'm used such as a greeting when you come in and since they have sit down dining booths you would think the waitress would come over bring us a menu. NOT :(

The place does live up to it's name Allen's Take Out, the staff runs the place just like a take out spot even though the place is dine in as well.

Overall the food was pretty decent the BBQ sauce is sweet n tangy but very light I usually like a thicker sauce but it's pretty good. The pricing is moderate $9 for a paper plate with a couple ribs on it is a bit much for this type of place but the brisket sandwich prices are pretty good.

I will try and give this place another shot and see how it goes.

Greenleaf Avenue... puttin' the "prettier" in "Whittier", one mom and pop establishment at a time.  Case in point for another "yelp friend endorsed" bookmark turned soon to be favorite, Allen's Take Out.

This is a man's man restaurant.  Reminiscent of old school lunch counters, this simply decorated diner operates under a basic system of get in, get fed, get out.  My work bff and I were lured in Friday with the promise of slow cooked brisket and homemade gravy, and Allen's didn't disappoint.

We both ordered the barbeque brisket sandwich (I got mine sans cheese) with crispy steak fries, and asked for a side of their luscious brown gravy.  Mmm mmm mmm love that meaty meat, piled high on a tender french bread-esque bun and dripping with hot house made smokily sweet barbeque sauce.  What a perfect lunch.  Upon dipping a fry into that silky gravy goodness, I knew this first visit would not be my last.

Service was kind and informative, and although I'm sure they would've done it for us we followed other patrons lead and refilled our own drinks at the soda fountain.  The television blaring a random "war in suburbia" movie wasn't my taste, but everyone else in the restaurant (all men) seemed to enjoy it.

Can't wait to go back and try a burger or that evil sounding "three cheese grilled meatloaf" sandwich.

    Fatties unite.

A new found neighborhood sandwich place that offers classic and savory sandwiches to your heart's content. Friendly and homey feel at this cool joint called Allen's.

As a family-owned restaurant, you can see the happiness of this operation. You're greeted and welcomed with a smile (when it's not too busy). The owner and head chef, Allen, is also there if you want to order any specials. There are specials from time to time and you can order off-menu.

My visits here included the grilled chicken sandwich with salad and bleu cheese for $9 bucks and their rib plate. Pretty darn good man. They give you a lot of sides and oh, drinks includes FREE REFILLS...no frills. :)

I see a visit to Allen's again real soon.

One word...delicious!  We went to Allen's last week for the first time. Had heard lots of good things about this place and it did not disappoint.

My wife had the bbq brisket plate.  The brisket was cooked to perfection and the bbq sauce was nothing fancy but very good without overpowering that tender brisket.  The mashed potatoes were lumpy and homemade good with just enough thick brown gravy to match.  I tried the open face brisket sandwich and being the piggy, added an order of gravy fries because I love gravy.  Two slices of soft, chewy french bread topped with homemade mashed potatoes, tender brisket and that wonderful gravy.  The gravy fries were as I had hopped: well done steak fries, plenty of gravy and some brisket.  A meal in itself.  I saw a plate of them go by that had cheese on them ,too.

The staff was nice and friendly and eager to get our opinion of the meal.  We sat at the counter and watched some basketball playoff action while enjoying our meal.  It's a very relaxed atmosphere with a diner feel.

Went back again today and had the 3 cheese meatloaf sandwich with a side of gravy fries.  Best meatloaf sandwich I have ever had in my life!  A nice flavorful slice of meatloaf topped with 3 gooey cheeses and grilled onions on 2 grilled slices of that great bread of theirs.

We don't go uptown to dine very often but this is one place that I'll make the trip for anytime.

I went to Allens this past Sunday before goin to the movies!

I love the hometown feel of this place! It has cute old school dinner decor, but with a new school big flat screen TV that they show sports or movies on.

Everyone that works there is very friendly!! The service was excellent, we were in and out just in time for the movie!

I had the bar-b-que brisket sandwich w/steak fries! The roll they used was so good and the ba-b-que sauce was perfect!

I don't know how to splain this better than "damn"! The ribs are slow cooked and then smothered with some pretty dang good BBQ sauce. Mo' better than the ribs though is the deal.

Okay, so since my initial review, I've been back to Allen's a few times. And you know what? They DO NOT dissapoint. Chatting with Peter, the proprieter, is always a good time.

Tonight I had the BBQ Bacon Bleu Cheese Burger with their gravy fries.  http://media2.ct.yelpc... It was amazing. The BBQ sauce was sweet, the bacon was salty, and the bleu cheese was creamy. Seriously, the best freakin' burger! It sounds like it would be heavy, but it wasn't. It felt very light. It sounds weird to even as I type it. A bacon burger... light? It was! But the gravy fries that Peter twisted my arm to get, was what made it not so light. I don't know how many calories I ingested tonight, but you know what? I... don't... care! That's how good it was.

He also mentioned his "hidden menu" tonight to us, after a long conversation. He's so cool that he gave us the greenlight to give a Yelp code word for the secret menu. Are you ready? It's "cypher."

    Break the code, people!

What a disappointment. Yet again I was lead to believe by Yelp reviews that this was a kick ass place to eat in the culinary deathzone known as Whittier. I was misled.

I came here not sure what to order so I spent a few minutes looking over the menu. I decided on the Roast Chicken Plate with a side of Baked Beans and green salad with vinaigrette on the side. I placed my order to go.

When I get home I open the cartons and find that my Roast Chicken Plate is nothing more then sliced chicken breast with a container of white gravy. I was expecting chicken on the bone. The chicken was ok. A little on the dry side and kind of cold. it took me about 5 mins to get home from Allens so the chicken should have still been hot. Fail on the chicken.

Baked beans were ok. A little soupy. Less liquid and this would have been ok. The salad was fine except the dressing they gave me added no flavor to the salad. It was a flavorless vinaigrette. I was expecting something like a balsamic. What they gave me was just oil.

Major disappointment with this place. I dont get why they have so many good reviews.

I came here a few weekends ago with a girl friend who insisted that I had to try this place out, gave me rave reviews. This place is very nondescript, nothing fancy about it, real simple menu, chill atmosphere. There is a flat screen tv mounted on the wall, lakers game was on so that was a bonus. It must've been a quiet night, only us and another table with a couple people were there. Which was nice because our waiter was very attentive.

My friend orders us two sandwiches (to share 1/2&1/2), the roasted chicken salad sandwich, 4 cheese meatloaf sandwich and gravy fries. Our food came pretty quickly and I must say...it was perfection. First, the gravy fries trumped anything I'd had before (sorry Hat), real smooth and savory. Next, I tried the chicken salad sandwich, now I really hate mayonnaise and anything made with it so I usually hate this kind of a thing, but wow it was on point! Perfect even. The bread was fresh and soft, sandwich wasn't soggy or falling apart. Proportions were solid. Last I tried the meatloaf sandwich, this was something that I'd pictured being really heavy on the stomach and again thinking that it would cause the soft french bread to be real soggy but no. It was also delicious.

This place is a go-to for those times when I am craving real comfort food. All ingredients were fresh and savory, nothing was overly salty or greasy given the type of food we were eating (i.e gravy fries and meatloaf sandwich). I have already gone back 2 more times for that chicken salad sandwich.

Only thing that would make this place better, is if they served beer. Other than that, don't sleep on this spot. Allen's does not dissapoint!

Seriously great BBQ! So good the first time, I came back with my husband within a week. I had the brisket sandwich last night and it blew my mind. The meat was moist and flavorful, the BBQ sauce was delicious and the bun was the best I've had at a restaurant. I asked for the grilled onions on my sandwich, yum yum yum. AYCE Ribs and French Bread on Friday for 8 bucks!!! (after 5pm)

I didn't partake in the Ribs grubbin, but their sign caught my eye. When did this place take over NJoy Burger? A place that has brisket in lil ol Whittier is a welcome change.

i ain't much wise on BBQ stuff, i stay away cuz something with bbq makes me naseaus although i do like the taste... So i got myself a brisket sandwich with bbq on the side for 6 bucks. boy, do they give a ton of meat!!! It was yummy, but sometimes too much meat leaves me craving for something veggie and this was the case with this sandwich. The fries were good, esp the soggy ones. You can also get kettle chips which are addicting.  They ran out of the chicken ranch sandwich for my coworker, so we got her a chicken salad sandwich instead. we had to do a switcharoo cuz the salad was loaded with onions-which she hates. but it all worked out in the end, as someone enjoyed the chicken salad one ALOT. I think i'll have to order that for myself next time.

Great service. Small menu, but a yummy lookin one with options like Spareribs Plate, Rib Plate, Gravy Fries, Brisket Burrito, and Roasted Chicken Plate.

Three of us ate at Allen's for lunch today.  The food was not bad.  It was not fantastic but it was somewhat tasty even though one of our plates had mashed potatoes that were cold in the middle; I would have given them 3 stars for the food.  I gave them two stars because the service was poor.  Although the waitress was polite, she served two other parties (a total of 8 people) their orders before ours even though we ordered our food 5-10 minutes before those parties even walked in.  Once they were served, we still had to wait about 10-15 minutes more for our food.  Those people ordered some of the same dishes that we did and they got them first.  We were dumbfounded as to why the restaurant would do that.

As I was randomly looking things up on Yelp I typed best BBQ in Whittier. Allen's Take Out popped up and as I sifted through the reviews one thing became abundantly clear...I had to try their Gravy Fries.  I convinced my sister that day that we should give them a try and my goddaughter and I took off and ordered a meatloaf sandwich (grilled bread with 3 cheeses, meatloaf and grilled onions), a chicken sandwich and two orders of fries.  We got one with just gravy and the other with gravy and cheese.  These fries are AWESOME!!! The gravy has brisket in it and its really rich and tasty.  The fries are a meal in itself.  It's more like pot roast fries...something a foodie (or is that a fatty?) like me would make at home.  After my meal, I immediately text my friend Rogelio and tell him he HAS to try them.  This was on a Wednesday...by Friday my sister Blanca, Rogelio and I found ourselves at Allen's for some Gravy Fries.  This time we ordered them with cheese and grilled onions.  They were even better than before.  Seriously, how is that possible?  We talked a bit with the guy who helped us and he joked that he would see us the next day.  The funny thing is, Rogelio tried going the next day but his gf nixed the idea.

The sandwiches were really good, and they have this crazy deal on Fridays with their BBQ, but honestly the fries is what they are known for.  Allen's is a little place in Uptown Whittier that would have been a hidden gem if it wasn't for Yelp.

This place just opened last week in Uptown so I wanted to check it out.

It is a really cute space. Very clean. It has a bar, a few tables and booths. It's very casual.

The owner and cook are super friendly and welcoming, even though there wasn't any wait service, they were helpful and attentive to us.

The food was really good. There are 7 plates, the ribs and briskets are the focal points. My roommate had the BBQ Brisket Sandwich and I had the Brisket and bean tostada. Both were really good and for the both of us to eat was, I kid you not, $8.76. What??? Really??? My friend even got an extra sandwich to go, that's how much he liked it.

I'll definitely be back when I want some down home cooking for a great price.

The owner also said that they are going to start a "late night" service out of the side window located on Greenleaf. From around 11 to around 1, he'll open up for the after bar people to get a bite. Brilliant!

    Definitely worth checking out.

A friend of ours was having an art show in downtown Whittier when he recommended Allens. He said there was all you can eat bbq ribs during the evening and they were really good. Sounded like a good idea since most us were not from that part of town and knew otherwise. Our friend, who is aa local of the city, went out of his way to tell the establishment to have extra for that night because he knew we were hungry eaters.  A few of us had adjusted our afternoon meal to prepare for a night of ribs!

The ayce is suppose to start at 5:30 but 2 hours later, there were "sold out". Excuse me, seriously, did the Fat Boy's (rip Buffy the human beat box) just come by and wipe them out? Well, my friend and I left, annoyed and hungry, texted the rest of our buddies and went to eat Mexican food down the street.

I guess 1 star isn't fair since we didn't eat any of the food but I'm certainly not going to give a higher score for a bait and switch.

When I walk into a BBQ place I love the smell of the bbq that just consumes you. Well this place did not smell like bbq at all so I was very apprehensive about eating here but since I had read all the other Yelpers reviews and wanted to support my neighborhood places we decided to sit and order. The menu is very basic just like other reviewers pointed out so we went with the rib plate and brisket plate, fries, mash potatoes, salads, bread and drinks. This was about $22. The salad came out first and we liked it. Then shortly after our food. The ribs were very moist but for me nothing special and the brisket was shredded not cut, I thought that was a lil' weird. All in all I would go back because it's in the neighborhood and reasonable priced but I'll probably stick with the sandwiches no need for the plates.

Just got back from Allen's for the first time... Definitely NOT last!! Food was great! There were 4 of us, we got a Spare Rib plate, Brisket Sand, Open Faced Sand & Meatloaf Sand. But first we started with an order of  their Famous Gravy Fries w/cheese & onions... The Gravy Fries were better than it sounds!!! The gravy was just right. Not too salty or too strong. And it comes with pieces of brisket in it..... So we were ready for the main course... When it came out, we were not disappointed! The Spare Ribs were cooked well. Tender & juicy. The BBQ sauce was not too sweet or sour, and had a little kick to it. PERFECT. Brisket Sand had a lot of tender brisket with that BBQ sauce. Open Faced Sand (a monster of a sandwich) had homemade mash potatoes smothered in that wonderful gravy. But we all agreed that the winner was the Meatloaf Sand! The Meatloaf had great flavor was moist and was covered in cheese.
Peter took care of us!! He found out that we were originally from Hawaii, and being an ex-surfer himself, he knew what we liked! After our meal he came out with a sample of what he called, "Brisket Fried Rice". Now remember we were all full and food sometimes doesn't taste as good when you're full, but this Fried Rice dish was real good!!! We gave him a few ideas of what dishes he could make with it. He told Allen about it and maybe next time we visit it may be on the menu!
Mahalo Nui, Peter, Allen & Staff. WE WILL BE BACK!!!

Walk - In and ordered an open face Roast Beef Sandwich with mashed potato's, Gravy, and a Coke. Sat Down the food came quickly and hot. The Beef, mashed potato's, bread and Gravy were all tasty. Total Cost of my meal was $8.50 with a tip.

The owner was really friendly. The place has changed hands a few times, but this style of simple food like brisket, roast beef and chicken will work well at this location I believe.

I will be back soon to give the brisket a try~

Besides they are practically next door to my favorite wine Bar.

    Give Them A Try~

    Cheers~

    Quality establishment here.

I usually go next door to buy our stubborn husky some 'premium' dog food which he never appreciates and then decides he no longer likes after a couple of servings.
I was hungry and decided to stop in after the owner at the pet store recommended I try the food. It was a good thing too because the BBQ brisket 'sammich' I ate was very good. Good bread and good flavoring on the meat. The BBQ sauce they use is also pretty good, I remember leaving NOTHING on the plate. I think I might have licked the plate when no one was looking.

I still have to go back and try some of the ribs. Next time I go my dog will again have to wait a little longer for his canned food while I inhale a plate of brisket.  Im hoping the fellow yelpers dont snitch to my dog.

The most delicious salad dressing I've ever had - Italian.  I love the green salads, the roast chicken salad and to have chicken salad over a green salad.  My husband loves the gravy fries and the ribs.   I'm totally excited that i can now buy the salad dressing and take it home!  Nice people, super casual and great prices.

Ate dinner here for the first time the other night. It's just the greasy spoon diner you'd expect -- deep booths and greasy food. I ordered a meatloaf sandwich with three cheeses grilled on buttery sourdough bread. It was quite cheesy and tasty. My husband ordered the blue cheese bacon burger with gravy fries. Let's just say, there wasn't anything left on his plate. Allen's doesn't have a huge menu to choose from, but just enough for a selection. They have thick steak fries that crisped just right. The only drawback, according to my husband is that they serve Pepsi and not Coke. I think we'll come back again soon.

I lived in Kansas City for a
Short time and nothing compares to KC BBQ. The BBQ ribs at Allen's are the next big thing. The ribs are meaty and tender. I don't want to sound like I am a pro when it comes to BBQ ribs but I've judged at competitions and these guys know what they're doing. The price is also some thing to smile about. The service is what makes this place a total winner for me. the guys make you feel like an old friend that has arrived to a backyard BBQ. The restaurant is small but quaint and very clean! Whittier is lucky to have these guys.

Oh maaan is this place delish! The BBQ and gravy that drooled down my platter was very good. Definitely a must when in uptown or when craving some meats and bbq. The rib platter here is very good and the service does not disappoint, they are very friendly here.  Cant wait to head back!

    UPDATE:
Was back there tonight...and they had added desserts to the menu.  Great Puff Pastry, Whipped Cream, and fresh Berries..They were really good..crispy, creamy and fruity.
I upped my rating from 4 to 5 stars because I think they do what the do really well.
    Original Review:
    Wow, what a gem.
We stopped in here on an early Saturday eve for an early bite of dinner.  I had the Rib Combo, and friend had the Brisket Sandwich.  Both were excellent, and for less that $20 out the door for two of us, with a generous tip, we were more than happy.
My friend has been dreaming of his Brisket Sandwich...great meat, fresh french bread, and crispy kettle chips.
    We'll be back for sure.
They have a very limited menu, but everything they do, they seem to do well, so good for them.
