The time has come to describe our visit to Allen's this past summer.

I've avoided doing this, not because I was disappointed or unhappy with our visit, but only because I feared that writing my review and thinking about our visit would dredge up such beautiful memories that I didn't feel equipped to deal with.  If I take out Fritz's lobster bib, which the wonderful Esther gave him, we both burst into tears.  The only thing that stops the tears is the knowledge that we'll be back to Allen's next summer, and more than once.

Fritz and I spent a wonderful, leisurely day exploring the many dog parks in Portland.  A couple were amazing, including one park that was filled with some of the most beautiful and tallest pine trees I've ever seen in my life.  Even the jaded Fritz was in awe.

On our way back to home base in Harpswell, we knew it was time--finally--to hit Allen's Seafood.  We'd read about it, we'd seen the sign a dozen times on our way home from our expeditions, it was now time to visit.

The highly anticipated visit was worth every second's wait.  Off of Harpswell Neck Road, you wind your way down Lookout Point Road to the water until you find Allen's (driving past a lovely Bed and Breakfast inn that is adjacent).  It's very Maine.  No frills, a very busy lobsterman's home base.  But it was quaint and charming.  We parked and made the way to the little shack that serves as the take-out restaurant.

I ordered a lobster roll (what else?), fries, and a hot dog for Fritz.  We sat at one of the picnic tables.  After 10 minutes or so, the other wonderful woman who worked there (I sadly didn't learn her name) hollered over to me, "your lunch is ready"!  I was in love.

Lunch was incredible.  But I'm getting ahead of myself.  As I spread all the food out on the table, Esther called over to me and asked if I'd like a lobster bib for Fritz.  Really?  You bet I would, what a great idea.  Thus was a picture born (see my profile)--Esther made me take a picture and she made me promise to send her a copy (which I did).  How on earth do I ever repay her for this idea?

We devoured our food, which was incredible.  The lobster was amazing, the fries were amazing, and Fritz's hot dog was gone in three bites.  As Fritz and I wallowed in our blissful post-lunch food coma, Ester sat down and struck up a chat.  I won't say what we talked about, but I will say that she proved to be one of the most beautiful human beings I have ever met on this planet.  Months later, I think of her every day.  (Fritz made some new friends, too.)

Another reviewer said that Allen's is as honest as it comes.  I couldn't agree more.  If you have anything close to as moving and wonderful an experience there as I had, you'll be grateful you stopped.

The five stars are primarily for the live lobsters.  A friend who throws a lobsterfest every year got fifty lobsters from Allen's yesterday.  The 38 party guests managed to eat every single one (the last two were consumed as midnight snacks, then had their shells thrown into a campfire).

The view from Allen's is also pretty amazing--lots to look at while you await your delicious crustacean purchases!

This is the antidote to Estes. While not as picturesque as Five Islands, Shaw's or Anna's, this was the real deal.  Allen's is a little trailer style take-out place nestled into a gritty working cove on Harspwell Neck.  All seating is outdoors on picnic tables, with drinks from a vending machine.  You can BYOB.  The food is a value and as honest as it comes.

I wanted to put them in the top 3 and could have, based on lobster meat sweetness alone.  The desire for anonymity prevented me from helping them to correct their only flaw: dry toasted roll!  Where was the butter?  Just 1/2 teaspoon of butter could have made Allen's a Hall of Famer!

In late summer of '08 a crab roll was $8.95 and a lobster roll of modest proportions was $11.95.   I had a buck fitty hot dog that was really good. I think it was deep fried.

When on the neck I'll hit Allen's wthout fail and I'll just ask if they will butter the roll before toasting. If, upon my return I have butter on the roll I will tie them with Holbrook's for best mid-coast lobster roll experience.

Agree with Nat S. except they do grill the roll with butter in a frying pan. Sweetest, freshest lobster around. Pass on the pre-battered onion rings though. Say hi to Hazel there!
