Review from Daniel M.
Waltham, MA
Continuing on my trip around the Vermont side of the Connecticut River I had a hankering for some ice cream, so I stopped at Allen Bros., a roadside stand and grocery in Bellows Falls. I found it to be not a touristy place but a fully-functioning small store that satisfies the needs both of visitors on Route 5 and locals.
Although I wasn't excessively impressed with the ice cream selections I found a lot of great stuff in the garden shop, as well as a large number of Vermont-produced items inside. There was syrup, cheese, veggies and candy, all at decent prices. A full deli provided sandwiches and baked goods and Green Mountain Coffee - would you have expected any other brand?
Allen Bros. isn't dressed up and, although clean, looks like a working market. There is some good stuff here and is a good stop for visitors, skiers on their way to the mountains or anyone who lives in the area. Not pretty, not gourmet, but just right. -
Review from Ian W.
Good place to stop for fuel, sandwiches, ice cream, and baked goods, located just off I-91 Exit 5, south of Bellows Falls on US Route 5.
On the way through the area, I made a stop at Allen Brothers, which is a roadside farm stand and store. They have a garden center/nursery in a large greenhouse with plants and flowers. The store offers convenience items, fruits, vegetables, several varieties of Green Mountain Coffee (self serve), VT products, wines, cheeses, maple syrup, and candies. There's a food/deli counter serving pizza, made to order sandwiches, salads and baked goods such as cider donuts and cookies. There's also an ice cream counter serving Hershey's Ice Cream treats. The inside of the store is not fancy and looks pretty dated. There's a hard booth seating section near the food/deli counter.
The pizza slices looked very dry, so I decided on some bakery items instead. The cider donuts were decent ($0.50 each), firm/soft cake texture. The Maple Pecan Cookies ($2.99 for 6) were very buttery and have been going well with my morning coffee and still good after a week.
