    Serendipity. Planned serendipity.

I like small stores because, if they are well managed, they must do a lot in a limited space. For a bookstore, that means selecting a limited number of books that potential customers will find interesting enough to buy. This store is managed by experts.

For the first fifteen feet, Allegory looks like any other small bookstore: best sellers, coffee table books, etc. I assume that its selections in these categories are as expert as they are for the books that interest me, but I don't know that for a fact, in part because I usually walk past this nonsense to the small alcoves where Allegory displays books that contain actual information. (I confess that I once bought a best-seller here, but only because it had received a LOT of good reviews from respected sources.)

Allegory may offer only a dozen or perhaps two dozen titles in the subjects that interest me, but I'm never disappointed. I always find two or three titles that look fascinating AND have won a Pulitzer or some other notable prize AND -- they're books I've never heard of!

Well, if you don't mind feeling ignorant -- I'm used to it -- you can discover these fascinating books for yourself, without subscribing to Kirkus or the New York Times. Best of all, at Allegory, you won't have to spend all day looking for serendipity, as you would in a big bookstore. Serendipity will jump right up and bite you.

This bookstore is located within "The Shops at Salishan," a group of stores across the road from The Salishan Spa and Golf Resort.

I grew up visiting Allegory on my family's regular trips to the Oregon coast. It's a cozy little place with a surprisingly broad selection. The children's/young adult section is very large for a shop of its size. There's also a small collection of CDs (mostly easy listening or jazz).

The shop features one of the better recommendation tables I've found. You are guaranteed to discover at least one new book you just have to read. Several times my mom has offered to treat me to one book and I end up standing in the aisle, scrutinizing the jacket covers of multiple recommended books because I'm not quite sure which one I want. And I can't remember ever being steered wrong. To me, that's the mark of a good bookstore.
