Downs- Slightly over-priced. It was a much smaller venue than I thought. It's between Trader Joe's and the teacher supply store, and so i couldn't immediately find it. For an art store, I thought they would have a galore of art supplies. I was sadly disappointed by their somewhat empty shelves and few choices in many items that I was looking for. They did have a great selection in Golden paints, and in canvas and paper stock... but the little things, like pencil selection, markers, colored pencils, etc... weren't up to par to Michael's or Westminster's Art Supply Warehouse.
Ups- They do provide an additional 10% to teachers if you pay cash or credit card. But they don't have an additional discount for P.O. (purchase orders). -

As an artist, I really dig this place. So far, they have had everything that I've gone in there looking for.
When I was pregnant, I got into a sort of funk and so to cheer up, I went in there looking for something new to try out. Three employees helped me choose something that was easy and safe (non-toxic). They showed me the different options, recommended things and acted like they were genuinely interested in what I was looking for.
The store has everything laid out and it all smells so papery and good that you want to buy everything and run home to create a masterpiece.
Can't wait to go back here to be inspired. -

I have discovered the ways of Allards....
Yes, Michael's is bigger - But Allards knows what they are doing. ;)
Seriously, the staff at Allards is what makes it. When you ask technical questions about the products elsewhere you just don't have the same confidence that they really know what they are talking about.
But the people I've talked to at Allards (in person or even just on the phone) actually KNOW something about art, and about the various products. ( at least painting products and all related aspects).
And they are genuinely friendly and personable. Michael's checkers usually look like they would rather be anywhere but there. And when I try to ask someone for help in the aisle, I always end up feeling like I am interfering with their day.
Allards leaves you feeling like you got just what you needed and like you were truly appreciated. -

First, the address needs to be changed. The Griffith location closed and they moved north to Blackstone and Barstow, in the same center as Trader Joes.
I liked the old location better as it was larger, but this store still has lots of art supplies. They have a great selection of canvases if you paint. I know what my friends, are saying, "but you don't paint, so why do you care?" I just want others who do paint to know about this place.
Service is very good if they have what you want. I found some beautiful paper and wanted more than was on the rack, but alas, that was all they had and the clerk was like, "sorry, that's it." It was handmade paper so I guess I shouldn't be too hard on the guy, but I wanted him to order more for me. Or, at least offer to.
Oh, also, no more furniture at this location. I have the best computer table that I bought at Allard's many years ago. -

This place has everything (well when it's not the beginning of the semester and students buy out EVERYTHING). And if they don't have everything you need, you simply write it down and they'll give you a call when it comes in.
they also sell really great local artist work.
Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable.
I pretty much get all my art supplies from here. I stopped going to Michael's not only because this place is locally owned, but their prices are great. They also do onsite mount board cutting which is super convenient, because I have to buy LOTS of mount boards and the exacto knife isn't always exact. (.50 per cut). -

Back in the day when I was a young art student I dropped many a dollar buying art supplies here. It was between that and Aaron Bros (does that still exist?). Numerous pens, pencils, paper, brushes, you name it. Good to see an independent art vendor still survive this day and age.

I realize I wasn't being fair when I evaluated this store. I went to Michaels the other day and other places and realized that no one in this town sells oil bar. The staff at michaels sometimes don't know what the stuff they are selling is for but Allards always knows everything that they have. Very friendly people. You can ask them anything and they will suggest what they know is best. I can tell their staff has some artists knowledge. Oh, and they are THE cheapest in town. That's a very good thing in these times, especially for students like me.

Review from Monica M.
Los Angeles, CA
For as much as Fresno State used to endorse this place, it was pretty bland. One could find random things, like materials for animation cells, but there wasn't a good selection of high-quality markers. Perhaps it was too much to ask for them to have animation paper? When I used to go there the staff knew little-to-nothing about art as if they really didn't do much past basic crafts. When I have to order from Utrecht, etc, to get basic supplies, something is up.

This place is pretty cool and I always walk in and want to buy a bunch of stuff. I mainly stop by to check out their silk screening materials since I am planning a project for the near future. The prices seem reasonable and the employees always offer help. I feel a little bad because the last time I showed up, they were closing so my friend and I sort of held them back. Sorry!

Very helpful even if their selection isn't ginormous. They have tons of fine pens and technical / drafting pens too!
