One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
My search for a hair salon ends here.
I have thick, coarse, wavy, Asian hair... you probably wouldn't be able to tell apart my pony tail from a horse's tail. To add to that, it was down to my waist and I was having neck/shoulder problems. (seriously, what's wrong with me.)
- When I met with Allan, I told him to "cut it all off!" He carefully evaluated my face structure to find the style that would fit me best, and talked me through what he planned on doing. *STAR for great communication*
- He put my hair in a pony tail and chopped off about 12 inches and encouraged me to donate to the cancer society. *STAR for charity awareness*
- He methodically snipped away my massive locks for nearly 45 minutes. I saw him sneak in a break to massage his wrists, although he tried to assure me it wasn't because of my hair. *STAR for patience*
- He anally snipped and styled every strand in place, to make the hair cut impeccably even. *STAR for perfectionism.*
- My short, chin-length bob feels and looks awesome. This is the shortest hair I've ever had, and I'm considering going even shorter as long as I can stick to Allan. It's also growing out nicely, which is a plus. *STAR for solid hair cuts.*
Just a quick update - Allan was the stylist for our wedding. He did a fantastic job...absolutely professional. He was punctual, extremely efficient, and very calm and reassuring. Basically, he was everything you want from one of your wedding vendors.
I don't think he does weddings often - but since we have been a long term client, he was happy to do it for us. If you ask nicely enough though, he may say yes (as long as he's not traveling to another hair stylist competition) =).

First, a bit about my hair. I'm a chinese guy with coarse hair. I do NOT like the standard chinese… Read more »
This salon doesn't work for me unfortunately. I booked Susan for a hair cut after reading so many stellar reviews on Yelp. Susan is an extremely nice and professional lady. She gave me tips on how to wash my hair and style it at home. It was very helpful and nice of her. I asked for her suggestion on a hair style, and I ended up getting a very traditional bob cut. Nothing special whatsoever. I was totally UNimpressed. And she charges an exorbitant $55 (she gave me 15% discount though, as per Yelp ad). With $50+, I could've gotten a much more stylish looking cut at Calihair or Sassy Hair. So..... I was a little disappointed. This old boring looking bob style needs blow drying every day; otherwise, uh, it looks like my silly unsophisticated hair cut when I was a little girl.
Over the past few years, I also tried Allan a few times. Wasn't impressed about him either. The layers he did were not very good. The styles he cut was also very traditional. And it seemed like he didn't want to spend too much time or pay too much attention to clients who simply wanted a hair cut. You may spice him up if you want a highlight or coloring.
So, if traditional looking bob style works out for you, and you don't mind paying $55 for that, you can try Allan salon. If you prefer a more modern looking for the same price, try out Sassy Hair or Calihair, both in Cupertino. If you want a bob cut with a lower price, there are plenty of places to try. For me, I'm ready to try out another new place/stylist next month, because my current style won't last long.
P.S. forgot to mention, Susan described to me that she'll cut the sides a little longer than the back. I was happy with that because that length will frame my face well based on my past experiences with many different cuts. However, she ended up cutting everything straight across. So... it looks very unsophisticated now. While she was cutting, she also told me my previous stylist wasn't doing a good job in trimming the layers, and they do it differently at Allan's salon, like this.... But the layers I ended up getting are very minimal, not working well with my hair type.
Michael is my favorite stylist ever! I used to come in only twice a year - once in the winter and once in the summer when I was home from college. He always remembered me and gave me the same great cut each time!
Honestly though, he gives me the best cuts that I've been able to find in the US! Seriously. One time I came in after getting my hair cut in Ithaca - it looked weird, and Michael even said, "It looks like someone chopped the ends with a razor." Looking back on that, SO TRUE. Luckily, he fixed it, and when I went back to Ithaca, people complimented me on my hair. A few days after I went back, the dude I was seeing at the time (who is usually few and fair between on compliments) told me how much he liked it. Hooray for Michael!
Aside from giving great cuts, Michael just makes you feel pampered. Great shampooing and washing, and nodding and giving his advice on bangs length. Not only that, but he's a great listener to my girl gossip. He always tells me how I'm great looking and how boys are dumb.
Great haircuts, compliments, and boy bashing - what more can you ask for in a stylist? :)
I went to Allan's Salon after a close friend of the family highly recommended him and was very pleasantly surprised.
I have a slightly rounder face and always ask for a cut that slims it while still keeping my hair decently long. I typically end up with a shoulder length cut that slims the face or longer hair that is slightly less flattering.
Allan patiently listened to my different concerns and communicated what he was going to do and what to expect. I found the entire process very educational and was extremely satisfied with both my haircut, the price, and the length of time it took. I had an appointment that started right on time and ended 30 minutes later.
I'm excited to see how my hair grows out.
Five stars!
Behind the dry rat's nest, I was pretty much happy with the style and flow of my current hair style. Youthful, long. The only problem is, my usual stylist is probably a good $20 more than Allan's Salon, so I came to Allan's in hopes to get trims from this salon.
I brought in 2 pics to show Rose, and she suggested I get layers in the front like her hair. I like her hair. so, ok, check.
I wanted 4 inches cut off from the back, she did that, check.
some cut cut snip snip later
I ended up looking like an old lady with flat hair. The bottom portion of my hair that crosses the front of my shoulders look like vacuum dust brushes. They are very thick and bushy. There was no dimension to them and it was a straight cut, so I asked her to loosen it up a bit.
For $50+ I expected at least better than average, not worse..
They are very nice people, but I'm not here to pay for nice.
I'm posting a pic now since I'm a bit annoyed. It shows my hair a week ago (passport photo), the 2 pics I brought in, and the "after". It's not a horrible haircut, but it's nothing date-worthy.
I found this place through Yelp. With all the great reviews, I just expected more.
I came in for base color and hightlights and haircut. The high and low lights took 3 and 1/2 hr, it took so long that I decided not to have a haircut. Because my stylist was also working on anther customer, Allan checked my hair once.
I just think for what I paid, it was lacking the profession and service. I would not come back to this salon and definitely needs remodeling.
I found this place through Yelp of course, and the funny part is, Allan used to cut my mother's and I hair like 10 years ago next door to a tofu place at an Asian salon by my house before he turned into this big hair superstar.
I had intentions of getting a body wave because I got one like 5 years ago and just missed having beach waves in my hair. I did some research and found a girl who got one done by one of the stylists there Michael and was really content with it. So I made the call and manage to get an appointment the very next day, they open on Sundays, which is pretty rare for alot of salons.
Michael was super friendly, I never met anyone who was so knowledgeable about hair, he explained everything I needed to know about the condition of my hair and how I needed a good reconstruct shampoo/conditioner. He didn't even push the salon's products like every other stylist does, he suggested I get another brand that was way cheaper He also advised me not to get a body wave or dye my hair blonde again. So I put complete trust in him with my hair and told him to basically give me a color he think was ideal for me.
I liked how he took his time with my service, actually talked to me, was really personable. He was kind of rough with the shampooing, I guess I can't blame the guy since he has big hands.
So fast-forward, Michael blows dry and styles my hair and I am anxious to see the final result. I thought the color turned out too "orange" and I was too afraid to say anything right then and there because I didn't wanna insult the guy.
So I go home weary, the next day I leave a message about how I wasn't too thrilled about the hair color. Allan who is the owner tells me to come back the next day so Michael can re-do it. We decided on a this mahogany/purple tone. Michael was real understanding and happily re-dyed my hair. This time during the shampoo, my back got completely drenched, I did not really enjoy a second bath but I didn't want to make a big deal out of it. The cons of being short...I always have issues with the salon rinse chairs!
Fast-forward again, the final color way darker than I anticipated. I appreciated that he didn't charge me again but I of course left him gratuity.
It's been like a couple of months since the dye and my hair has faded to a natural looking dark brown color I don't mind. I am not sure if I'll be be back since the dye was a little costly and I didn't get the color I was anticipating. I might go back to a stylist I've been going to in Redwood City or go to this other salon on Stevens Creek my bff suggested.
Susan is a really good hair stylist. She is super friendly when she was cutting my hair.
I'm pretty picky with who cuts my hair, since I have really thick Asian hair..lol. I'm glad Susan did a great job.
I love how she would ask before she did anything.
Susan is really polite by saying 'Thank you' a lot. =)
Thanks Susan for showing me how to style and blow dry my hair!
(Susan's price is $55 for a haircut).

I made an appointment with Susan on the recommendation of my sister, as she'd cut a good 6 inches off her hair about 4 months ago and they had done a fabulous job with her cut. Although I was a little late for my appointment, they started me right away with a shampoo (I enjoyed the head massage) and then sat me down to start my cut. It's been awhile since I last cut my hair and since I do dye my hair a lot, I was in need of some hair care. Susan listened to and did everything I wanted, and took special care in making sure my hair looked and felt healthy, even the bleached parts. She recommended products and gave me tips on how to care for my hair, and was also very friendly and talkative throughout the cut. Although she did cut my bangs a little shorter than I wanted, my hair grows pretty fast so I don't mind that much.
The salon itself is very nice and classy, not too overwhelming or flashy. The staff were all very friendly and Susan was fantastic. My wash+cut was $55, and I would definitely come back to and recommend this place to anyone.
I called today around 10:00 AM and I scored an appointment with Tommy for 11:15 AM. Awesome. I'm one of those people that never makes appointments. I call and try to get in when I can on that same day. It's kind of a bad habit. Tommy was a total sweetheart, and very considerate. I had non-virgin black hair, and was looking to lighten it up. Tommy was up front about the process, telling me he would have to cancel the color first, and then he could lighten me to a brown. I liked that he told it to me straight, instead of trying to work something that obviously wasn't ever going to happen. I hate it when stylists just try to slap some color on you and say "well I tried." Nope...Tommy was realistic in what to expect. In any case, he worked some magic on me, and somehow got my black hair to a nice brown with caramel colored highlights.
Tommy's pretty in the know with the newest trends and definitely wants you to leave happy. I was there for like 4 1/2 hours (damn black hair takes forever to lift) and I saw a steady stream of customers, and everyone left looking fab. Tommy is the newest addition to the salon (I believe), but he comes from another salon in Santana Row, so you are totally in good hands!
Another fabulous wash and cut from Susan yesterday! Embarrassingly, I admit that I've gone a little too long since my last trip but Susan whipped my dreary and flat hair into shape--it's quite luxurious now :)
What I love about Susan is that she's extremely meticulous with her cuts and takes her time from start to finish. Let's not forget that she gave me a fabulous head massage during my wash--my fav!
She also is super sweet and gives great tips on how to style your hair once you're at home :)
Thanks again Susan!

I love the feeling you get after a great hair cut. I am happy to report, that is exactly how I felt… Read more »
Ok, so it has been officially one year since I started going here.
It took me about a year since I moved to the Bay area to look for the PERFECT colorist and through the help of YELP, I found Allan.
And guess what? I have been VERY happy! Very happy is VERY hard for me to say about hair designers.. especially because I'm a meticulous pain in the butt when it comes to having the right color/hue in my hair.
You know those Asian girls who lighten their hair and look like they just poured Orange Kool-aid on their head? That has always been my hugest fear. I have dark Asian hair and its kind of tricky but wiith Allan, I get the PERFECT shade of ashy brown each time.
Well, there were a few times I came home and my mother advised me to go back and get it darkened. She's very picky but I trust her sound judgement. Allan never charged me a penny any of the times I had to darken it. He adjusted the color with a very hospitable attitude and I felt good about it.
Hair cutting? He is the man. Always traveling and very active in the hairstylist industry so he always knows whats up. Allan's always fresh with ideas and learning new cutting techniques so that tells me he's constantly progressing and evolving as a (hair) artist. I really admire his passion and craftsmanship that he puts into his work.
So far, I havent dealt with any of the other stylists but I enjoy them all. Theyre very nice people. I've met Michael, Jesse, Mindy and a Vietnamese lady and they are very sweet.
Last week I came in and I noticed they had a new assistant. I don't know why this happens but there are some people I prefer washing my hair more than others. Isn't the shampoo process a rate-able criteria ? My favorite Shampoo-er was this spanish lady that doesn't work there anymore. She was an great scalp massager.
I especially loved how Mindy served me espresso on a cart. A+ and nice glassware too!
I'm still happy and will continue coming here for as long as I'm in the area.
Thanks Allans Salon Crew!

If you want to hear an unbiased detailed opinion of this salon..
No ass kissing..here it goes :
1.… Read more »
I finally found my new hair home. Since moving to the Bay Area from sunny SD, I've been on the prowl for a stylist who understands my thick, black, stick-straight Asian hair. Seems like this salon is it: same-day appointment, clear descriptions prior to cut, and magically, it's just what I've been looking for. Very nice and attentive staff. No frills or any pretentiousness. A little pricier than I would have expected for the location (Santa Clara strip mall next to Persian grocery store), but the skillfulness and hair expertise is well worth the price. I am ready to call Allan's my new home!
OMG! -- That sums it all up! lol
Basically, I had been getting my hair done in MI by my friend for the past 6 or 7 years and then moved out here to CA. Started going to Rachel and Co. in Burlingame and I have come to the conclusion that the only reason my 1st 2 cuts by Rachel were good was because she was just trimming my old style. The second I asked her for a new one, she butchered it (which was last week).
So I spent days researching salons and came across this one, and read all the reviews for Tommy, so I decided to give him a shot. Not only did he fix what she screwed up, but it is seriously the best cut I have EVER had in my life!!! Eventhough he had to cut more off my length to fix the screwed up cut, it even 'looks' longer now than when he started. He has definitely mastered the art of haircutting and I will definitely go back and tell everyone to go too.
I wanted to give him a big ol' hug when he finished, but didn't want to invade his 'bubble,' so I just kept it cool, but seriously, I would give him 10 million stars if I could :))
P.S. - The price of the cut includes the blow dry which is always a plus!!! And eventhough its a tiny bit pricey, its sooooo worth it! My 'bad' haircut made me want to wear my hair up in a bun everyday, but now thanks to Tommy, I want to show it off to the world.
I've been to Susan a few times now and I always love my haircuts! I have long thick stick straight asian hair, and Susan always takes her time and meticulously trims/cuts my hair. I brought in a picture of what I wanted, and Susan was able to cut my hair the way I had envisioned it according to my face shape. She gave me good tips on how to style my own hair at home. She's so sweet and careful with cutting my hair. I will be going back to her from now on.
Realized it had been a while since I'd had my hair cut and it was getting out of control. So checked out reviews on Yelp and found Allan's Salon. Called and asked for an appointment, but it HAD to be today, since I was leaving for Vegas tomorrow. I was given an appointment with Susan for 5pm. And, *gasp* she was actually ready for me at 5pm, no waiting around!
Overall, a great experience, I was able to get in the same day and even got an appointment with one of the women who already has great reviews. Susan was great, she really worked with the texture of my hair, which is baby fine and wavy, and gave me a great cut that gave me tons of body. She also noticed when I came in that I like to put my hair back (when I'm working on the computer, just hadn't taken it down, yet) and after talking for a bit while washing my hair, she pointed out that I'm more the wash and go type in the morning. Yeah, I sleep in as late as possible and only get up to get to work on time. So, she showed me what to do if I didn't have time to dry my hair, and if I was able to dry it, various ways to play with it. All in all, it's a very manageable style that I can deal with and won't be too fussy. Not bad for $55.
Why not 5 stars? It may be a bit petty, but apparently she doesn't like to go through towels. My wet hair was down my back for a bit right after washing, so my shirt got wet. Then, no towel under the smock, which meant stray hairs would wind up on my neck and down my back. So, had to change shirts as soon as I got home because a damp shirt with small bits of hair is cold and itchy.
P.S. If you're a fan of Bumble and Bumble products, they use them here. I hadn't used them in a while and forgot how much I liked their line.
I was on a tight schedule today but I was in need of a serious haircut. My hair was fried and my split ends made my hair look like a jungle..so I went on Yelp..I found Allan's Salon, and because of my time limit, I chose it because not only of the reviews but also the easy location since I know the area. I easily got an appointment...I guess today was slow?
I walked in and was introduced to Michael. He immediately made me feel welcome by asking how I am, etc etc. He then asked what I wanted (just wanted a trim pretty much, get the jungle off). For about 5+ mins. he went over my ENTIRE head of hair. I've never gotten that from any stylist. He even turned me around so we can take a look at the hair in the back. We examined every inch of my hair and he told me exactly what he wanted to do to give it more shape, fullness, and to bring back my hair. He even went over hair products...and told me some new info about products that could be actually do more damage than help! Yikes! Thanks Michael for the lecture! hahah I really appreciate when a hair stylist explains exactly what they want to do along with asking what YOU want and gives lectures on hair products right for you....and also take thes TIME to do it.
Michael kept me talking the whole conversation and asked me about school but wasn't too nosy ;) He's really nice...the way he cut my hair kinda scared me..but he did mention it was gonna be more of a blunt cut. He cut my hair which suited my hair texture...i HATE IT when they add more texture..and he didn't. He knew exactly what my hair needed...and he mentioned he's been cutting hair for over 30 years and in the end, it showed. He gave me an awesome haircut and it looked SOOO much better and healthier! After my hair cut he showed me what products to look for.
The place is really cute and modern..when i went to use the bathroom, I saw a shop dispenser in the back ;D...and other beverages for customers. The location is really weird, but when you walk in, it's totally different. Also, they carry Bumble and Bumble, Futerer, and Pureology, and I think Loreal professional products...I suggest check it out..it's one of those nicer salons without the snootiness :) What also rocked was the discount for new customer :) By the way, there's trophies everywhere showing what theyve accomplished..yay...highly suggested if you're around the Valley fair area.
Another great cut at Allan's. Rose rocks!
So I hadn't bothered to get my hair cut for 10+ months or so. Yeah, I'm beyond lazy. Rose managed to tame my frizzy, out of control mane into a sculptured, sexy do. Get your tail over to Allan's Salon!

(On behalf of my gf since she doesn't Yelp and only lurks the reviews)
My gf really loved her haircut, by Susan here at Allan's, and was thoroughly pleased. She's recommends Susan if you want to get a haircut here. She looked like an Asian Supa-staruuu when got back from her appointment!
-1 star for the appointment debacle. Her appointment was initially scheduled at 2pm on a Saturday and the scheduler called her a couple of times days before the appointment to see if she can change to noon which she did not but I guess the scheduler got confused and changed her appointment anyways. =(
Over all she was happy with the results. Happy gf = more sex. Yay me! Lol.
I've been seeing Tommy ever since he was cutting hair at Bellarmine Salon in Santana Row. I just want to say he's THE BEST. That's right... Nobody has cut my hair better than Tommy. Seriously!
I recommend him to anyone for his SKILL, of course. However, he's even got a good, "positive energy" personality which I happen to personally value in people I decide to give my good hard earned cash to. And besides, I'm in the service industry also as a massage therapist, and what I can say about Tommy is... He gets it!
If you want a decent cut and feel comfortable knowing you're won't be disappointed... Tommy is your man!
I've been back to Allans since my first visit. My haircut (a-line bob) was getting long and in need of a trim. Again, still the best salon I've been to in years. I reccomend this place to anyone who has trust issues with letting a new stylist cut their hair. Once you make the switch you won't regret it.
Its not hard to find at all.
Prices are expensive, but your hair isn't going to cut itself..
People their are great, very friendly.
Its clean and well managed.
Communication is key, don't be passive and end up walking out with something you didn't want. All the stylists will work WITH you.
Im growing my hair out, so I won't need to visit again soon, but I wouldn't call another place, this is my fav bay area salon.

Susan is the best. Why?
1. She listens to your wants and needs, yet offers professional advice as to what would look best for your skin tone/face shape/lifestyle. You may want a crazy hair cut that takes a lot of maintenance, but do you really have time for it in the morning for upkeep?
2. She doesn't BS. Very honest lady!
3. Susan is SOOOOOOOOOOOO nice. Seriously. What a sweetie pie!
4. She explains the process of what she will be doing, and the results are EXACTLY what she says they will be.
5. SHE DELIVERS ABOVE AND BEYOND!
I love my hair cut. It's nice and feminine, and the color is perfect! She even gave me a semi-purplish hue to the dark brown that you can only see in the sunlight, and once it fades it will fade to a dark brown (perfect, I hate touching up dye that fades!).
If you want a perfect cut, perfect color, and want to get what you ask for, go to Susan. When I say perfect, I mean perfect. The lady is a perfectionist and will take her time on making sure the ends are even and the layers are on key.
You da bomb Susan!
She Says:
Allan is pretty flamboyant for a married man... haha... but I get the feeling that he's playing into his customers expectations... a persona, if you will. Regardless, this man knows what he is doing. He's confidence and results reveal that he's been doing this for a number of years.
I've been here twice... once with a picture, and once without. I've been pleased with the results both times. The time I had the photo (somehow he already knew I had one, weird.) it didn't turn out exactly as the picture did... but maybe it's my hair or the shape of my head. o_O? I still liked my hair and it's grown out pretty nicely.
This doesn't come cheap though... his cuts run about $65 bucks a pop... OUCH. Plus, he's also run late both times. I guess that's the law of supply in demand.
I am sad to say that yelp has failed me this time. I usually get my hair cuts in San Francisco's Japantown either at Arty or Japan Center Beauty Clinic. However, this time around, I didn't have the time to make the drive up to the city and I have also been curious to see how good the hair salons in San Jose really were. I am SUPER picky about where to get my hair cut and spend a huge amount of time researching the perfect place. Yelp led me to Allan's Salon where I read the bios of each of their stylists from their websites. I chose Tommy because it stated that he has had training in Japan and Taiwan which was totally what I was looking for-- Someone who would be able to cut like the Japanese do! Unfortunately, the haircut turned out to be just meh!
There were many things that were said and done that made me question his hair cutting abilities. First of all, during the hair wash, he made a comment about how he could still see color from that last time I colored my hair. I was confused and said, I HAVE NOT had my hair colored in the last 5 years not to mention that I have probably get my hair cut about twice a year! He still said he could see the color. (Uh huh. Whatever.) When he was ready to cut my hair, he pulled out the dreaded razor blade instead of scissors to cut my hair! My face was also COVERED with my hair throughout the whole cutting experience. My bangs are sadly, just not right. (I had asked for side swept bangs, not bangs that cover my forehead.) The bottom layers of my hair are just...*sigh*....I just can't even describe...
Customer service was also just meh! Definitely NOTHING like Arty or JCBC. My stylist did not ask if he could take my purse, he did not ask if I wanted him to take away the magazines that were in my hand (there wasn't even a table where I could put those things down!). There was no towel on my face during the hair wash and there was no head or shoulder massage after the wash. The clean up after the haircut was very minimal.
All in all, the hair cut wasn't a total epic failure, however, I didn't walk out feeling like I had the most amazing hair cut either.
I paid $65 here for a very average hair cutting experience. I pay $55 in the city for a STELLAR above average experience. This is what happens when I cheat on my hair salons...
Lesson learned: Never get my hair cuts in San Jose again!
I went to Allan's a few months ago and it's taken me this long to decide how to rate the salon and if I'll be back.
When I called to make an appointment, the receptionist told me that Jesse was the best person to cut medium-length (at the shoulders) hair with layers. So she set me up with an appointment that very afternoon.
There was no waiting necessary when I arrived. Wonderful! I was quickly whisked away to get a shampoo and soon met Jesse, who seemed pretty nice. He looked at my hair and asked what I wanted him to do. I asked him for his suggestion at first, and he responded, "anything you like!". Well, that wasn't much help. Most stylist will offer some sort of suggestion based on the shape of your face and the texture of your hair. I didn't get any feedback at all so I told him that I wanted a shorter version (a bit more than a trim) of my current style. I asked him to cut my hair just above my shoulders. Basically, keep the overall shape and the long layers with slightly more volume around the crown.
He said that it wouldn't be a problem... and claimed that he has worked on "so many Japanese and Korean clients" who have also requested this same style. Umm... OK. (I'm neither, but that's besides the point).
Jesse spent only 10 minutes cutting my hair and then began drying it. I must have had a look of surprise, because he quickly said, "I'm not finished yet. Don't worry! This isn't how it's going to look... I'm going to cut more after I dry your hair."
After the blow-dry, he did resume his work and alternated between "styling" with product, a big round brush, and hairdryer and actually cutting my hair, which I found a little strange. During this time, he also spent time chit-chatting in Vietnamese with employees and other clients who were waiting in the stations next to me. No biggie - but it would have been more professional if I was the center of his attention while he worked.
When he was finally finished, I asked him to make sure that the cut was even and he made the effort to go back and snip around a little more and "thinned" out my ends.
What I didn't realize while I was still there was that my true cut was disguised by the "styling" that he was doing. The round brush he used curled the back of my hair inward, so it looked shorter than it really was.
When I got home and washed my hair that evening, I noticed that Jesse had actually cut my hair into what looked like an overgrown mullet! The back was still at shoulder length and the sides were thinned out and short almost to my chin. To make things worse, the right side was slightly longer than my left side.... uneven! Even when I tried styling it again, I could still see the mullet shape and I wasn't happy.
Yes, partly it was my fault for not being more diligent and checking his work thoroughly. But I still feel like I was slightly duped because he covered up his mistakes.
Now that it is 3 months later, my hair has finally grown out enough where you can't see the mullet cut. And the thinned-out ends are not so straggly and weird. My hair now looks relatively decent, but it is once again time for another trim... and I doubt I will be back to Allan's.
Michael did a really good job today-- i have longish hair that is really thick, but he knew exactly what to do to shape it right. the last time i got my haircut was at this place in belmont---the guy who cut it spent 2 hours complaining how thick my hair was and how difficult it was to make it look right....ummm a damper on your self esteem, right?
My hair looks great now, my husband says i look hot :). Michael, thank you!
The only name you need to remember when you go here is SUSAN.
I've been getting my hair done by SUSAN for over 10 years now and will not trust anyone else with it. I'm very picky when it comes to my hair, and I trust SUSAN's expertise completely. She's meticulous with each cut and color making sure that your strands are perfectly even. She's honest in her recommendations and suggestions and is always up-to-date on what's currently in style. She takes her time to ensure a quality cut that you will be fully satisfied with. You can tell that she takes the work that she does on each client personally and will give you a cut she can be proud of.
I recently got a cut and color by her and I walked out feeling amazingly rejuvenated and incredibly sexy! You buy a pair of jeans that will enhance your derrière; you go to Susan if you want beautiful, sexy hair.
Don't go here if you have Latin Hair. After reading Yelp Reviews I had a haircut from Susan. it looked ok in the Salon, but when I got home and washed it, It looked like a Mullet! few months later I decided to give Susan another try, but with the color (even though my husband suggested not to). Well, my hair is naturally black/brown, and I asked Susan her expertise on the color, and trusted her. Not only did she not even get close to the root to start color so it looked grown out already, but it turned ORANGE! Alan kept looking over(I think to see my reaction). I did say it looked a bit bronze, but I left and shelled out the cash anyway. It was no surprise when I got in the daylight and saw how Orange my hair was. I went back to Susan, she fixed it a little with the help of Allan, but basically they just dyed it back to my normal color because they did not know what to do. Maybe they are good with asian hair as suggested on Yelp, but they do not know what to do with Long, Black or Brown Mexican Hair (which seems crazy if you have a salon ins San Jose!)
My Ratings:

My Opinion/Story:
I've had my hair cut with Allan for a long time ever since he was at the Berryessa location. Same goes with the ladies in my family. At first I thought Allan just cares about his business but when I found out that he went to my Aunt's house to cut her hair (due to cancer) for free, I had a change of mind about Allan. He's a really decent person and he even took time off from his busy schedule to do that. He's always nice and friendly when he's cutting your hair but outside of that, he's still nice and friendly.
I've also had the priveledge of having my hair cut by Susan and she's awesome as well. This was only because Allan was off that day. But as it turns out, Susan was another jem. She made me look like a movie star and everyone raved about my hair style then. Both Allan and Susan are wonderful!!! Unfortunately, I stopped going to their salon only because their prices are a bit more than I can afford. I've also allowed to grow my hair longer so it's less frequent for me to get a cut.
My husband also used to get his hair cut there because they always seem to know what's best for him and always do it right the first time. But as I said, we stopped going to their salon because of the price. Since then, we've just been trying different salons in the area that are within our budget.
But I highly recommend Allan and Susan. I'll definitely go back to his salon for his mad skills and talent. You'll see how much he cares about his customers and making them satisfied and happy when he reaches out to those unsatisfied customers and offering them a chance to redem himself. I don't think I've seen other salons do that.
Michael Yocum is a genie with a bottle of hair color!
Want a new look that compliments YOU? He's the guy to go to.
I first met Michael when he worked magic on my hair at a Palo Alto salon. Since then, I've become a convert! I'm tired of taking chances with stylists who claim to know what they're doing until you see the finished result -ouch!
Not so with Michael Yocum. He gave me some great advice on hair maintenance and suggested I try a color blend that is really quite flattering - both in my opinion and that of others. I've gotten really great feedback on my hair color!
Michael is remarkable when it comes to haircuts. He seems to intuitively know how to style and frame your hair to your best advantage. I'm definitely a fan of his work and I recommend you give him a try.
If you drop in at the salon, Michael's pretty hard to miss. He's the big white guy with the thick mane of hair.
Same day I posted my review, Allan sent me a note apologizing for what he did because he knew exactly what he did.
Would you really trust a DISHONEST MONEY HUNGRY person with your money? I wouldn't but only you can be the judge of that.

OMG! My Hair looks AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU MICHEAL!!!!
I am SO in love with my new haircut & style and I have Mr. Micheal to thank!!! He truly has the skills of a Shear Genius but only much much much better skills! I have finally found the BEST stylist and color expert!!! And I can't wait to go back to have my hair colored! He gave me some of the best advice and suggestions for my hair as it was very dry and damaged from going to all of these other salons. I am now happy to have found someone like Micheal who actually cares about your hair and spends time to educate you about proper haircare and maintainence.
Micheal is the ultimate hair expert, he knows EVERYTHING about hair even to the science aspect of it, I was totally impressed! He is very experienced and has received tons of first place awards and has traveled all over the world, so I was really lucky to have him work his magic on my hair!
To be honest, I have never experienced any hair stylist to have as much indepth knowledge as Micheal does. And quite honestly, I was a bit hesitant about trying out another new place, but once again Yelp came through for me BIG TIME! ANd I was SO lucky to get in right away!!
Out of all of the salons in the area, I must admit Allan's Salon is by far THE BEST!! Their staff is highly skilled, professional, and knows exactly what they are doing! Their prices are by far reasonable and definitely unbeatable! You get the BEST care for only a fraction of the price! I was seriously in desperate need of a TOP Stylist that had as much experience and knowledge as Micheal. He gave me an indepth consultation and I really appreciated that. Noone has ever cared as much about my hair... not even those other pricey trendy salons in the area...
I was seriously about to give up on my hair until I went to see Micheal at Allan's Salon, he turned my overprocessed, dry, damaged hair... into soft, shiny, healthy looking hair!!! It is truly a miracle and he totally saved my hair!! My hair has never looked this good! And Allan's Salon is a really nice salon too....i was totally impressed!
Thank god for Micheal, he gave me the best advice I have ever received from a stylist and has the best technique I have ever seen! I will definitely be going back to get my hair colored next week! He suggested gold tones, I can't wait!! He is a true Hair God!!! And he saved my hair and brought it back to life!!! Now, my hair looks healthy and it has not looked this good in a while! He corrected my previous haircut and gave me fresh, new layers and was nice enough to curl the ends to give me some volume!! I feel like a total MILF now!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
The entire staff at Allan's was so nice and extremely helpful especially since I went in with stroller in tow. They were so sweet to my DD and even helped me get her out of the stroller while I was getting my hair done! They sat her on one of the salon chairs, soo cute! I am grateful to have such an awesome salon so close to my house where they will not mind if I bring my little girl! They even offered her apple juice and did her hair in an up-do style for free! How SWEET! My little girl LOVED the attention and wants to get her first haircut there!
Thanks again, we had a wonderful time getting pampered :). I would definitely recommend Micheal to all my family and friends!
My haircut looks worse now and I called Allan to fix it or atleast refund my money thinking he will be respectful as I have read so many good things about him here and he tells me "How dare I write a bad review ?".
I am beginning to wonder is that why he has so many good reviews here as he bully's folks that write a bad review ?
Yelpers have helped me a lot and Jeannie Salon & Spa or Mitri Hair studio were gems I found from here.I guess there are some bad apples in the pack too.
Infact, I went back to Jeannie's salon and spa after 2-3 white hairs showed the day after my color was done and Jeannie colored it back without charging me a dime.

I really like the place but sometimes, the people Allan has working for him is just not right. This has happen to me before and I really feel like it is a complete waste of my time.
I called in for an appointment to get a haircut. The lady must have asked for my name 3 times and asking for both First and Last name including giving her my phone number. Before we hung up, she said we'll see you on so so day and time. The day of, I call to confirm to my appointment and I swear it's the same lady I spoke with before who is saying that "I'm sorry, I don't see your name on the list". Again she ask me for my name 3 times and also my phone number and have the nerve to ask me if we can set up another appointment for next week! I told we talked and she tells me that it wasn't her and I must have talked with someone else. Come on!
I was looking forward to my haircut since I seldom get one. I even had to re-arrange my schedule to leave work early so I could get a hair cut. Now, alas, I can't get a haircut and not getting paid because I'm leaving early and now have nothing to do!
Allan Allan Allan, I really like the hair cut you give me but this just breaks my heart and annoys the SHIT out of me.
I found Allan Salon to treat my 11 year old nephew with a Pete Wentz-ish haircut. We ended up being lucky enough to have Allan cut his hair. He did a phenomenal job cutting what started out as a mop into a very hip haircut with highlights in his bangs.
Allan is very talented and I would highly recommend this salon! If I start getting my haircut in Santa Clara I'm going to see Allan!
Allan contacted me the day of my review. I've written bad reviews before, but no owner has ever cared enough to approach me. He offered to fix my hair or refund my money. Allan was really nice. I'm amazed at how well he fixed my hair! My bangs are even the same length( but SO much better)!! Even after visiting some of the top hair salons in this area, I've never even seen some of the techniques he used. Allan seems really dedicated and cares a lot about making his customers happy. I came in around 7:30pm and the salon was closed and empty except for Allan and his last client who he was trying to make happy. By the time Allan was done with me, it was 8:40!
I will definitely come back here during college breaks, and I'm telling everyone I know to do the same.

I had been saving up for a nice birthday hair cut and decided to try this salon. I didn't have an appointment but they were able to accommodate me despite looking pretty busy. I thought the girl that washed my hair was my stylist (this was only my second time getting my hair cut at a salon) but Allan was the one who cut my hair.
I have medium length, straight, fine/thin hair that falls out a lot. I wanted something more stylish, age appropriate and easy to manage. I didn't want anything over the top or too high maintenance (nothing punky or girl mullet). Allan took his time with my cut and was really easy to talk to. I really like how my haircut turned out. I got exactly what I asked for: kept the length (without it looking straggly), some layers/shape, side bangs and my baby hairs covered. It's been about 3 weeks since my haircut and I still get compliments. Allan showed me how to style my hair but I usually just wash and go and it still looks great.
One thing that I really like about the salon is that everyone seems really friendly. Also, I was relieved that they accepted credit cards because the cut was a little more than I thought and I didn't bring enough cash (my bad) but I was extremely happy and satisfied with my haircut and felt it was worth the money. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here and will definitely be back.
I have thick, frizzy, asian hair. All the hair cuts I got so far (Germans, Koreans, and Chinese)... I always end up looking like a mushroom after a while.
I read all those reviews and hoped that I would get a decent hair cut (I can live with for months until the next hair cut is due). But I was wrong.. I mean I got THE haircut and the best advice how to take care of my hair. My hair stylist (Jesse) was just awesome. I had some difficulties understanding him sometimes but the language barrier was not a barrier to give me a great hair cut!
He was very dedicated to make me look good~... Awesome job!
Thank you so much!
It was my first time there a few months ago and I plan to go back. The people there are the sweetest. I had a late haircut appointment and my other half was waiting (it was probably about 7:30 or so) Allan was really sweet to him and made sure he was comfortable and fed while he was waiting, thanks Allan!
I was skeptical at first with the haircut, I wanted short and allan cut it short. It got some getting used to and the great thing is that Allan colored it in such a way that when my hair grows out, the roots won't look funky. My pet peeve is when people color their hair and their roots show, it's so ugly! Now, it's four months later and my roots still look great! He does great coloring work and is a complete perfectionist, a trait that I don't mind. Can't wait to go back!
