I love this place. From the cool vibe to the ever changing funky and extra funky selections which I adore my favorite still being the Bhan Mi which is a grilled miso chicken meatballs with garlicky spinach, avocado, pickled daikon radish & fresno chiles, shaved carrots and a blood orange maple chile ginger glaze on a grilled baguette. I mean seriously where else are you going to get something that is that amazing! My only complaint is the place is so damn small and you always get stuck waiting during anytime a normal person would want to eat a sandwich.

The sandwiches are always top notch, very filling and not that expensive especially considering the quality and quantity of the ingredients. I also love the free oreos at the register. Every restaurant should do this instead of crappy dinner mints.

I've honestly never been completely satisfied after getting grub from this place, but for some reason I keep trying. I want to like it. I love the idea of it, decor is great, service is solid, but I've just not been real impressed with the actual sandwiches.
Had the Gobbler yesterday... very salty and I'm not sure the grilled bread really compliments the other ingredients.
I don't even know why I'm writing a review here; I'm so wishy washy on this place.
I'm even annoying myself with this review. Maybe I should stop.
ok.... back to my coffee. sorry.

Oh All Star is fantastic. I've been here twice. The first time I got the Reuben, the second time I got the roast beef. I want to be hungry enough for the triple decker roast beef. Like I want to be able to eat it. But I know I can't eat that much.

So the fries, I always love the fries. They're crispy and thin. Then you can order other things like gravy fries and cheese fries. ALl of which sounds delicious but there is something to be said about a regular plain fry. My next goal is their onion rings because I have high standards for onion rings as well.

We were seated fairly quickly and our waitress was very attentive. My boyfriend had the Extra Funky sandwich and he loved it. The burgers looked amazing, I'm always down for a good burger. But I wasn't disappointed with my roast beef sandwich. It had a sea salt, thyme bun, which turned out to be a little bit more salty than I would have preferred it to. But when I dipped it in the sauce it really shook off some of the salt and balanced the sandwich.

All in all I'm hoping to go back soon. Reasonable prices, good food, fun atmosphere.

Also, they're building All Star Pizza across the street. I'm assuming they're connected unless some jerk was like I'm going to use the same name and have nothing to do with the similar restaurant across the street.

NY Black Pastrami reuben was clutch. If I wasn't with a fussy baby, my wife and I would have sat down, and I could have had one of the beers on tap, which would have complemented the sandwich. The sandwich was large and tasty. I would have preferred a hint more seasoning on the coleslaw, but overall it was pretty good. I'd give it 4 1/2 if I could.

As the self-proclaimed Sandwich Queen (that dude on Food Network stole my title), I was really stoked when my sister suggested this place for an early dinner. After a 12 hour journey to Boston, there was nothing I wanted more than a hot, delicious meal and All Star Sandwich Bar certainly brought it.

Because it was early, it was pretty empty so we were seated right away and decided to start off with the gravy fries (two of the best things in the world put together in one!) and maybe it was because I was starving but those fries really hit the spot! The only downside is if you don't eat the fries quickly, they start wilting because they just can't handle all that gravy goodness. For dinner, I had the pastrami reuben and although it was a little messy (Russian dressing + oil = many napkins sacrificed their lives for this meal), it was really good. If I lived in the area, I would definitely come back!

Some days this place blows me away and others it's just "meh." I guess my biggest complaint is consistency. I could order the same sandwich three days and have it served three different ways. When they're on, it's as good a meal as you'll find in the Inman Square area, when they're off, you'll question why you'd ever come back.

The servers have never been rude, but I have felt neglected a few times. One thing that really bothers me is the color used on the wall for the rotating daily specials - I simply can't read it.

Oh, ASSBar. Memories of sandwiches past haunt me, nay, taunt me to return to your awkwardly laid out restaurant to consume slightly overpriced fancy people sandwiches and imbibe in ways I should not be on a Sunday afternoon. Sure, your Atomic Meatloaf Meltdown rightfully melted my face, but previous ASSwiches have been hit or miss. You've taught me so much, such as foodstuffs besides bread that have the word "loaf" in their name aren't always disgusting. Don't get me wrong, I still am really into you, but I'm also seeing other sandwiches.

But, alas, Dave's Fresh Pasta will always be numero uno in my cardioid. DFP is always and forever DTF.

This is definitely my go to sandwich shop in Inman Square.  I've never ordered anything there that I didn't like.  The one consistent thing that you'll get in every dish is grease/oil.  I'm not saying it's bad, but just to warn those health conscious eaters out there.

The place is always packed when I go, which tells me that they serve good food.  The price is about the same that I would pay anywhere else for sandwich, except here they minus the fries.  You'll need to order that as a side, which can be split between two people easily.  If you order their burgers, they also come with fries.

But again the price also does reflect their unique combination of flavors for a sandwich, so in the end I can't complain about their prices.  I mean, hey... I keep coming back.

I am sure this is a great sandwich place for people who eat meat. It seems like a very fun place. But for me, being vegan, it was hard for me to eat here.

Initially, my partner and I were seated at the bar, but when a table opened up, we were able to switch over into a booth. It was nice that the servers were flexible and fairly attentive (although I ran out of water and would have liked more).

The only thing I could eat at the restaurant was the falafel burger. The falafel came on wheat bread with tomatoes, lettuce, and red onions. There was a side of cole slaw I couldn't eat because it looked like it had mayo in it. It would have been awesome if our server had noted that and let me have something else, but no.

The falafel was dry, so dry, but apparently there was supposed to be more of a tahini/hummus spread that I just didn't get on my sandwich. So, I probably won't come back here, but since I walked in by chance, I probably won't have to.

I love the idea of this place (which is owned by the same folks who own East Coast Grill a few doors down).  Great for takeout/catering, too -- we got a platter of cold sandwiches for the Super Bowl this year.

They have a selection of daily specials (including at least one vegetarian option), which means you can try something new if you're in the mood.  There are also some fixed day-of-the-week specials, plus the regular menu.

Food is above-average overall.  Most of the food is good, with a few of the regular items really standing out (mmm.... atomic meatloaf...)  Thought the chili was pretty good.  Rotating specials can be hit-or-miss, but seem to hit more often than not.  The only thing I've had that I was really disappointed in was the brisket -- dry.

Decent beer selection, sometimes with specials.  No full bar.  I think I got a sangria here once and it was pretty good.

    Free oreos (and high-fives)!

My biggest complaint is that I wish they were open later, at least on weekends.  Sometimes I just need a sandwich at midnight!

I come here pretty regularly and they recently hired a young girl who makes for a really unpleasant dining experience.

I came in yesterday afternoon right after the lunch rush, so it was pretty dead. The girl ignored us for a few minutes just as she always does regardless of if she's doing something or not. Then, without lifting her head she told us to sit at a small table. I ordered my usual that comes with both jack and swiss cheese and asked to hold the swiss. This confused her somehow and she thought I didn't want any cheese. I had to explain and then she said she got it. When I got my sandwich it was loaded with grilled red onions - in the 2.5yrs I've been ordering this sandwich there has never been any onions nor is it on the menu, I had to use my side plate to put the pile of onions and was left with mearly nothing but bread - the eggplant was so dry it was like chewing cardboard and there were no mushrooms. But the worse part about it was there was no cheese to be found. When I told her about my missing cheese, she said, "oh, well do you want a side of cheese?" This might be a preference thing, but I like my cheese in my sandwich and melted. I don't want it on the side like I'm dipping my fries in a side of ketchup.

Speaking of fries, we ordered two: one with jack cheese (which she said they couldn't do, but my partner's been coming here for over 7yrs and has been ordering it just like that) and a half order without. The half order came out 10 minutes before our food and, because their fries in particular can't be left for the cold or they become inedible, we ate them all just as our second order of fries (with cheese) came out. We still didn't have our sandwiches and had already eaten almost all of our fries. And by the time our food came out, we had to pick very slowly at what was left to supposedly accompany our sandwich.

This girl has been our server 5 or 6 times and each time we leave feeling like we lost part of our souls. We don't expect five-star service and a lot of the servers are young kids just making a buck. No big deal. But when someone is so shitty that they make you feel shitty in return something must be said. She has a nasty attitude, or maybe it's that she has no attitude, good or bad. She's just like a zombie without thought or emotions.

I really like this place and it is one of the first establishments I've supported since moving here. Sadly, we decided that when we want to come here and she's working, we'll just have to turn around and eat somewhere else. I've never resorted to such a firm resolution.

So to add to my extreme love of all star I found out yet another reason to love it when we stopped in for an early lunch when they opened this morning.   Firstly I'd like to say they have a fantastic steak and egg sandwich on the menu right now which is a amazing cure for one too many cocktails the night before def worth a try!

Our waiter Brad was in a super chatty mood nice we were the first customers and asked if w had tried the cheesecake.  We were like no we didn't even know you had cheesecake.  So he starts describing the cheesecake to us(super light and not mad w cream cheese).  We decided we had to grab some slices to go and try it out.  As soon as we got home I had to try a bite!  It was amazing so light and fluffy, and definitely the bet cheesecake I've ever had.  I have no idea what is in it but I can't wait to try more!  Definitely check it out, you won't be disappointed!

My favorite restaurant in the area.  The funky and extra-funky often sound strange, but they are almost always worth trying.  In general, the ever-changing specials menu is what makes this sandwich bar deserve its name.  In the rare case where there isn't an eye-catching special, I go for the veggie cubano, which is also excellent.

As a warning, their inner beauty hot sauce is somewhat spicy (this coming from someone who is more tolerant than most).

I've been trying to get to this place for a long time, but Inman Square isn't part of my usual travels. My chance came yesterday following my son's hockey game in Somerville. I'm glad I went. The space is small, but though it was packed when we arrived at 12:30 p.m., we were seated within 5 minutes. Our server Brad was excellent. He was one of the restaurant's first employees, really knew the menu and was quick with recommendations. He was also friendly. We obviously had a different experience with the waitstaff than some other reviewers. I was very surprised to learn that celebrity chef Chris Schlesinger sold his stake in the restaurant a few years ago. This made me a little nervous because IMHO the Back Eddy in Westport, MA was never as good once Schlesinger sold it.

We ordered a special -- the Extra Funky which consisted of a chicken-fried chicken breast topped with sweet potato cornbread stuffing, sausage gravy and watercress ($9.95) -- and a Muffaletta ($8.95), the Italian sandwich invented by Central Grocery in New Orleans' French Quarter. It was spot one, right down to the olive salad which really makes the sandwich. The only downside was the bread which had no bite and little flavor except for the sesame seeds. Definitely get it pressed, panini style. I think the price point is good for the quality of the food.

The main change following Schlesinger's exit from the business, based on what I read when All-Star first opened, is that there's no longer a clear regional sandwich theme to the menu. And an item I was eager to the try -- a NJ-style deep fried hot dog -- is gone. I grew up on Rutt's Hut hot dogs which inspired the item, and looked forward to tasting All-Star's version. Overall, I recommend All Star. I probably wouldn't make a special trip, but if I find myself hungry and in Cambridge I'll go back.

P.S. My only caveat on saying this place is good for kids is that if your kids are the kind that can't sit still or have bad table manners that you can't control, this isn't a good place to take them. Tables are close together and the room is small. You'll only make yourself and fellow diners unhappy.

I am not sure if I am happy or scared that this place is less than 5 minutes from my new apartment. However, I eat A LOT, and this was the best sandwich I've ever had.

I ordered the Cubano and was not expecting real pork, but was extremely pleasantly surprised to unwrap my sandwich and find, between two crispy pressed slices of french bread:

About an inch and a half of actual roasted pork- delicious, juicy, with some brown, crunchy bits

    Some salty, slightly sweet ham

An abundance of creamy, buttery Swiss cheese

Delicious, crisp pickles and a slathering of mild mustard (these two get a combined mention because the majority of flavor can be attributed to the pork, ham and cheese, although the pickles and mustard both provide a nice acidic complement to the richer flavors).

I am dreaming about this sandwich. I must summon up some will power to order one of their other sandwiches the next time I am there.

PS- Because of the massive amount of meat, along with some fries, this made 2 meals for me.

I've always loved All Star Sandwich! Service is great and friendly, prices are fair, and the food is tasty. Beware of the size of the fry portions ... they're huge (but they do half-orders upon request).

The chili is a must -- very, very tasty, and it comes with great cornbread (moist and flavorful). I always get the chili and then a sandwich.

My 2 favorite sandwiches are the Extra Funky and the Monte Cristo. If you get berries & jam on the side w/the Monte Cristo, dump them on top of the cornbread that came with your chili -- trust me, you'll love it.

The homemade lemonade is also a wonderful beverage, even during winter.

And afterwards, go next door to Christina's Ice Cream for dessert!

Anyone within walking distance and with taste buds need not me to explain the depth of flavor that comes out of this spot. The always-shifting Funky and Extra Funky sandwiches make me believe these guys cater heaven.

What Inspired me to write this here review is the religious experience that was this last visit. One is called an oreo cheesecake. Another the pumpkin caramel pie.

Dear god. Best desserts I may have ever had.

So if chill staff you'd want to go get a beer with or sandwiches that make your taste buds cry for joy or if a solid beer selection are all not enough for you, go on the weekend and order dessert. The diabetes is worth it.

First time here, and I couldn't be bothered. The sandwiches weren't outstanding by any means. The best thing on the menu is probably the Poutine. Sandwiches can be found anywhere, especially in that entire area. The homemade lemonade was exceptionally sour. The service was just meh. My server lacked skills on how to take someone's order. Waiter just rushed in-rushed out. And, he even got an order wrong, even having to repeat it twice. But, not a big deal.

My thoughts: I'm not dying to come back any time soon. I'm not in love. Maybe another day in the distant future.

Oh, and there's no honey mustard and they don't accept American Express. Just Visa and Mastercard.

Amazing, inventive highly tasty sandwiches. I love this place. They make sandwiches no one else has even dreamed about and, for my money, have the best burgers in the area. My only complaints are that occasionally they will drop the ball and a phenomenal sandwich will be merely good.

Their veggie options are good, but limited and I can see where a vegan might feel left out. (True for most non-veggie-only restaurants). For everyone else, the place is deserves all five stars.

Went here on a whim and I really enjoyed it.  Small super casual good tunes and friendly wait staff.  We ordered deviled eggs for an appetizer which were delicious and I love any place that has deviled eggs on their menu.  We also got some awesome eggplant fries which were great and gone all too soon.

For my sandwich I got a special burger made from bison. It was cooked how I ordered it and tasted great, really have no complaints.  The mountain of delicious fries that came with it also helped the cause.

All in all a solid meal for a reasonable price.  Everyone that went enjoyed their food and left happy.  I look forward to going back and trying other items off the menu.

This was our very first stop when we moved into our new apartment at Inman. I have to say All Star gave us a very lovely welcome. Our server was totally chill and gave us a quick verbal tour of all the good eats around town. He also insisted we get the cheese cake at the beginning of the meal, which I found kind of weird. I am personally not a huge fan of sandwiches, but somehow their sandwiches always hit the spot. We bit on the cheesecake at the end and it was definitely a good recommendation. One piece of advice, when they named their fries "hell fries", they meant it. Man those fries were so good but also so painful. Just saying.

All-Star gets five. Not because it's elegant dining at its finest, but because it is a great casual place with an outstanding sandwich, fries and vibe.
When I walked in, I approached the counter to say that I was waiting for a friend. The waitress encouraged me to have a seat while I was waiting and when I say encouraged, I mean she was friendly, unpretentious and refreshingly so! While I waited I asked about the wine and was offered a tasting, but then I noticed they have Sangria -- that was it for me! It was not the best Sangria I've had, but it was quite good and served in a tall glass that made up for any of its shortcomings, which might only be a little fruit in the glass, please. I had the Vegetarian Cubano which I'd heard was divine, and it was definitely so. Served on a slice of french bread and toasted, it was all those things you want in an upscale sandwich but mostly never find. Really awesome fresh cut fries to die for. I couldn't finish my fries or sandwich so I took it to go. I just warmed up the sandwich and fries a few minutes ago . . . ahhhh . . .  delightful!

I work in the area so I usually just grab my sandwich to go. Occasionally I'll eat in, but that's usually only when I have someone visiting for lunch and All Star is my go to spot. My guests are always impressed with the inventive offerings for their specials, as am I. My all time favorite sandwich to date was the greek gyro they offered during their global street food-fest. I literally ordered it every day until they ran out of ingredients.

And here I am, pleading for all to see. All Star please, please, please bring back the greek gyro!!

Go here, get any sandwich and you won't regret it.

Stopped by for a quick lunch.  I order the cubano which sounded good on the menu but tasted a bit off.  Then I realized that it came on a french roll, and when the sandwich was "pressed" it completely fell apart in my hands.  French bread isn't really the best type of bread for this kind of sandwich because when it's toasted it's no longer soft and can't hold all the ingredients together.  Also overload on the mustard.

My husband had the roast beef, au jus style.  The meat was pretty tender but everything about the sandwich was overly salty.  The bun had a more than generous dousing of sea salt and the meat/dipping sauce was salty as well.  Was so thirsty for hours later.

I went here and ordered to-go sandwiches a few times before I was studying for an exam.  They always had the sandwich ready to go and were pretty friendly for the most part.

I can't remember the name of the sandwich I would get but it had chicken and veggies on it, very yummy!

One time, of course it happened to be on a very stressful day- I ordered the sandwich I always ordered and was off the library for a major last minute cram session.  I took the first bite of my sandwich and it was the wrong thing, it was loaded with all different kinds of meats- ham. roast beef I think ( I don't eat red meat and pork.)

When I called to tell them they were apologetic and said to come get a new one, I didn't have time so they placed a credit with my name for the next time I go there.

I haven't been there for my "sorry" sandwich yet, but I will be! I think this is a nice place for a quick sandwich.

I went here for dinner last night, having somehow been away from this neighborhood staple for a while.  Although it's not the best sandwich place in the area (and honor which goes to the unbeatable Dave's Fresh Pasta in Davis Square), the food is incredibly solid and the prices are extremely reasonable, and the service is usually fast and friendly.

The items on the specials menu are almost always a safe bet.  However, the star of the menu is the Atomic Meatloaf Meltdown sandwich, which provides a satisfying but not-over-the top amount of heat via a moist slice of meatloaf topped with red onion jam and tangy hot sauce served on fresh Iggy's bread.

This place is fancy by no means and not always as clean as desired, but its great for an evening out with friends for a quick, cheap and tasty meal.

Just made it over here after seeing this place featured on Food Network's Meat and Potatoes a few weeks ago.  They had recommended the Atomic Meatloaf Meltdown which I quickly agreed too.

The grilled meatloaf, jack cheese, hot sauce, and red onion jam on toasted sourdough really packed a punch.  This spicy mashup of goodness is definitely TV worthy but not recommended for those who have trouble handling a little kick.  My entire body began uncontrolably sweating about half way through the sandwich.  Totally worth it. The creamy slaw makes for a nice compliment to this spicy dish.

Also gave the Thursday BBQ Pulled Pork special a shot.  It was so tender and flavorful.  Almost does justice to Redbones or Blue Ribbon.

Friend got the falafel burger.  She didn't like it.  Don't know why she got it to begin with because it just didn't seem like the place for it.  So, avoid that I guess.

For apps, we had the poutine (my first time having it) which basically reminds me of the Canadian version of NJ diner cheese fries with gravy.  I bet that just made a bunch of Canadians really pissed. Too bad.  We also had the Spicy Hush Puppies special that involved bits of jalapeno.

I also enjoyed washing my meal down with a $3.50 16oz Narragansett. Delicious. They also have a pretty decent draft selection Including BBC, Harpoon, and Long Trail.

Our server was friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed, although a little hipsterish (understandable for the area). And when it only cost $20 for beers and enough amazingly delicious food to leave me in food comatose, I will definitely be back.

Finally, all I have to say is "Would you like some free Oreos on the way out?"

    "Yes, please, and thank you"

I love this place! Finally got to try it out last week after driving/walking by so many times. I had the eggplant parm sandwich which was amazing and my friend had a salad, which she loved. The service was friendly and speedy and the prices were just right. Casual atmosphere, busy, but not packed and looked like they had rotating specials. Can't wait to go back!

As a recently arrived Cantabrigian (really?), I'm embarrassed (yet ultimately pleased) to have learned about All Star Sandwich Bar through the Food Network.

After watching the buffoonish protaganist dither about the restaurant and lavish praise on their Atomic Meatloaf Sandwich, I strangely felt drawn to see what all of the fuss was about. I was quite pleased I made the walk over. The Atomic Meatloaf Sandwich was great. Pleasantly hot, and totally enjoyable.

As good as the Atomic Meatloaf Sandwich was, I recommend the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich (when I was there, it was a special, so not sure if it's available all of the time). When I hesitated (aren't all Philly Cheese Steak's roughly the same?) the owner told me that if I didn't think his version was a 9 out of 10, he'd give me my money back. He was well safe in that boastful challenge, as it was delicious. Bacon and BBQ sauce clearly make a good sub great.

Any restaurant that carries Pearl Country Club Franks is a winner already, and the All Star Sandwich Bar definitely doesn't disappoint.

Although I no longer live in Boston, I make a point of going to All Star Sandwich Bar every time I'm in town.I could go on and on, but I'll keep it short.

First and foremost, the food is incredible. The daily sandwich specials never disappoint, the beef on weck is always delicious, and the chili is so good that it haunts my dreams.

What keeps me coming back (apart from the Narraganset tallboys and free Oreos and rad food) though is the staff. They are   super friendly, attentive, and always make me feel welcome. So do yourself a favor: stop whatever you're doing and go to All Star immediately.

Not typically a sandwich person, but All Star won my heart. Every sandwich I've had here has been superb. Absolute fave is their version of the Banh Mi, made with savory slices of pork belly and amazing asian style aioli on toasted french bread. Can we say umami? Great deviled eggs and freaking amazing poutine: a HUGE pile of handcut fries smothered in cheese curds and gravy...oooh yeah. Chili fries are a close favorite second. Be sure to wash it all down with an Arnold Palmer.

I've been here several times and there are so many reviews already that a simple pro/con list will do just fine:

    Pros:
    - Friendly service.  Friendly in its own right, but especially compared to other Inman joints like Bukowski, where you might otherwise be tempted to go for a casual meal.  If you like being ignored by waitstaff, by all means, Bukowski is for you.  If you like being treated nicely, All Star is your place.
    - Varied and inventive offerings.  You could probably eat here every day for months and never have the same thing twice.  They have standards like reubens and tuna melts, and crazy daily specials I've never seen anywhere.
    - Decent beer selection.
    - Free Oreos and pretzel sticks.

    Cons:
    - Most food is on the heavy side.  They have some salads and smaller sides, but the sandwiches tend to be large and in charge.
    - Not a lot of vegetarian options.  For example, their special cheese sandwich one day was actually a roast beef sandwich with goat cheese.
    - The free Oreos and pretzel sticks are in a communal jar, and people don't always use tongs.

To be honest, if you could give half stars I would have gone for 3 1/2. The staff is usually friendly and the food is decent but there will be the occasional disaster that will leave you mystified, although the times I've complained by email(I usually get takeout) they've been more than apologetic and accommodating. The prices are a bit high as well, for the price of a sandwich being what it is you would figure they could throw a few pennies worth of fries on the plate rather than making you spend 4 bucks on a (too large) side order.

Even though it is right around the corner from me & I eat takeout 5 nights a week, I hadn't been to All Star in many months due to one too many disappointments.  I still monitor the daily specials when I walk by and they started looking good again.  Foolishly, I decided to give it one more try.

It sounded like a great idea to top a burger with korean shortrib.  It may actually be, but not when the shortrib is cooked previously & has obviously been sitting in a buffet-style warmer tin for awhile.  Dry to the point of blandness, this was the worst sandwich I have had in a LONG time.  Even when I scraped off the rib, the burger was still mediocre at best.  Sadly, like the rest of the menu options here, it all sounds better in print than it tastes in your mouth.

On top of that, they charged me more than what was stated on the menu.  Thankfully, I am financially sound enough not to argue over $1, but when the burger + tax comes out to $16, it better be REALLY good.   In this case, I would have felt ripped off it it was a $5 burger as I left half of it on the table.

This place was never my favorite, but it was okay every once in awhile.  The quality has totally fallen off of the table, though.  Even the formerly ridiculously friendly service is apparently no longer a concern.  The girl behind the counter made me feel like I was bothering her when placing my order.

I wouldn't eat here again if it was free.  There are just far too many other options in the area that serve good food and keep the quality consistent.
