I love winning stuff! Lucky for me I recently won a 5 course dinner with wine pairings for me and 3 friends from http://www.discoversd.com for All American Grill. Since I had been waitlisted for the Yelp Elite event held here recently I was pretty excited to get to try them during normal hours for a full meal.
We arrived at the restaurant and there were special personalized menu's on our table with my name on them. Super nice touch, me and my group felt like total VIP's! Our special meal consisted of Butternut Squash Soup, Wedge Salad, Swordfish, Petit Bacon wrapped Filet, and Lava Cake served with 3 pairings of wine and a fresh house Irish Cream. A very impressive sounding menu!
I don't really know where to start. I don't recall our waiters name but he was amazing and we had excellent service all night. In addition the manager came by several times to check on us and even gave one of my guests a few pointers on how they made their roasted veggies. Not only was the manager at our table though, we saw him stop and talk to other tables as well. Nice to see a business checking on their customers.
And the food was amazing. The soup was smooth but not too rich and the salad has this amazing truffle vinagette that wasn't too strong which was good since I'm not a super huge truffle fan. The swordfish was cooked perfectly and was super moist. It was served with a really good black olive bread pudding in a cute little espresso cup. The filet looked great (I don't eat meat so my bf was lucky enough to get mine) but the roasted root veggies that it was served with were amazing. We thought the carrot was soaked in butter however the manager assured us it was just roasted with olive oil. Lastly the Chocolate lava cake was delicious and the ice cream topped with fresh basil was a great combination. With all that food we were odviously super stuffed by the end of the meal.
Also parking was plentiful, they had plenty of tv's to watch the game and the table next to us had a http://www.restaurant.com certificate which is always great in this economy to find a place you can get a discount at. The bf and I will be back here for sure!
3 .5 stars sounds about right.
went here for my friend's bday...party of 30? usually with a group as large as this, things that are expected include: taking an hour to figure out/split the bill, waiting forever for food, and shitty service topped off with a huge gratuity included on our tab.
not here!
the one thing that stood out to me most was the excellent and quick service we received here. they have a good looking staff (seriously, every waiter/waitress was pretty cute ..hehe), and they're all super nice. every request was fulfilled quickly, water glasses NEVER empty..that's quite an amazing feat considering we were a large party!
on top of this, our bill was split easily for us, and not clumped all on to one tab...this made life easier for us.
so why only 3.5 stars? the food was not stellar =( at least not what i ordered. the crab cakes were good, nice and crispy, but i could barely taste anything except the curry flavor.........
calamari was really soft/mushy...not light, crispy and a little chewy like squid should be. my friend thinks it was just microwaved...=/
pismo beach was basically your typical linguine w/clams in white wine sauce...i should have known better than to order italian food in an "all-american" place. it was wayyyyyyy too salty. and my mom usually yells at me for adding too much salt to my food, so trust me, if i thought it was too salty, IT WAS TOO SALTY. the bread that came with it tasted ..odd..i don't even know how to describe it. but i was glad for the amount of clams that came with the dish, lots!
there were lots of things on the menu that sounded delicious, so i wouldn't mind going again, but i don't think i'd go out of my way to come here..
All American Grill is my new epitome of the three-star rating. The ingredients are fresh, the menu competently prepared, and, for a place with many more interior holdovers from Trophy's than just its location, it's clearly trying hard. It's the strongest restaurant in a very weak immediate area, and certainly looks better for the comparison.
The bar menu looks good, with a respectably wide array of draft beer (locals and national crafts) and fresh mixers.
I went in for a late lunch with soup, salad, and a sandwich. They have several blends of fresh lemonade (of which I am always a fan) advertised as being made with organic juices: pomegranate, blood orange, lemon (okay, not a stretch) strawberry, or cucumber (ok, that is a stretch). I went with blood orange, which seemed to impart a slight pinkness to the bottom of the glass but only a touch of its flavor.
For soup I chose the roasted tomato, which is maybe oversold by its description of "fire-scorched." The drizzle of red wine reduction on top was a non-factor; despite a thick texture the flavor was watery. I try not to add salt to restaurant food, but this tempted me.
Salad was the blue cheese wedge. Thankfully it's not an entree-sized wedge; rather it consists of smaller carvings of iceberg. The blue cheese came in a sensible portion; a scattering rather than a pile. Slightly more voluminous were the red onion slices, which were served too close to being cut: their acidity multiplied the tartness of the cheese instead of sweetly complementing it. The truffle vinaigrette took off some, but not quite enough of the edge. With mellower onions this may have been a contender.
The sandwich I chose was the N'Orleans chicken sandwich. It wasn't blackened; rather a traditional grilled breast (good; three stars, no more nor less) on ciabatta with a pleasantly spicy cajun aioli, tomato relish, and (perhaps out of theme) smoked mozzarella cheese that worked surprisingly well, leaving only the poor lettuce leaves as a predictably weak link on a hot sandwich. I upgraded the stock chips to truffle fries for a buck; like the blood orange juice, the truffle seemed absentee.
As a sports bar in a strip mall, it's a cut above. When you're around Hazard Center and need agreeable dinner-house food, it's worth your time. If All American Grill is all we ever get out of the demise of the Trophy's chain, the trade is a win.
Is it destination dining? Not yet; but that seems the direction AAG wants to go.
3 1/2
With the Little Fish Market closing (wha happon?) we decided to go up to another solid joint we've not been going to for years, Trophy's. Welp, Trophy's sadly is gone-- who got the big surfboard over the bar?
This place needs a name change, I was really expecting some sort of Applebee's experience here, but the menu is adventurous, core-california, smart, and the food is great too.
I had the steak-house style wedge salad to start, which was awesomely topped with a dainty but tight white truffle vinaigrette* (works!) and tons of bacon and a really tangy blue cheese to boot. We also split some goat cheese pizza and Gulf Shrimp. Very well done appetizers.
My skirt steak plate was delicious, my friend's burger was gone in minutes, and our third was through her shrimp spaghetti creation just as quickly.
Worth another visit and some more tries for sure. If you're in the area, check this out, it has the feel of a new place just coming together into something special. But the name doesn't do the place justice. "Good American Grill" might be a better name. This place is also very affordable, we had 4 apps a couple salads and 3 drinks and a couple soft drinks with our 3 apps, it was about $75. You could do lunch for two here for under $20 I bet.
A serious VALUE.
Recommended.
If you're staying at one of the hotels in the area and want to catch the games on Saturday and Sunday, this is a good bet. Very friendly service, solid menu and San Diego fans, while passionate, are very friendly.
Worth a try for sure! Parking is ample, don't be worried if you get circled into the underground garage, there's an elevator next to the restaurant.
*this vinaigrette reminds me of the dressing at the famed La Tratoria DI IV in east county, such great background flavor for the salad, cheese and bacon.
I have yet to review my experience at the All American Grill for the Heroes & Villains party. Let's just say they did very well to cater to us and I had to come back and have dinner.
I made my way to the bar on Monday night football just in time to watch the slow game. It was a quiet night, I'm surprised it was not packed because it seems like a chill place to catch the game, snack a lil, and drink a lil. I went over to sit at the same spot where my other alias Ms. Marvel was there the last time it's a habit I guess once you found the spot you want to sit at. The cool bartender Ryan recognized me without my costume ha it must be the eyes or the hello kitty card I carry around. He's cool very friendly and talkative not like most anti social bartenders, boring!
I skimmed through the menu and a few things caught my eye, I didn't want to have a big dinner anyway so I ordered the Little Italy Calamari- Seasoned well not overly salty or chewy (It was good that two girls killed the whole big plate haha...) A cup of great northern white chili/chicken soup it was tasty could be better if it was super hot it was warm. The last thing I ordered was the four cheese mac Oh my word it was good, but freakin Ryan didn't tell me you can add chopped bacon to top it off haha darn it!
This is a cool local Mission Valley spot if you're in the area and don't want to go to Gordon's, Incahoots etc......
I didn't realize it until after thumbing through the menu and looking at their mission statement, but the All American Grill is more than just a clever name to bring middle class Americans in by the boat load. They really follow through with their title. See, they go out of their way to source as much as they can from America. Be it the cuts of meat on the table to the art on the walls, all of it came from America, coast to coast. They only serve domestic beers, see where this is going?
I went with a friend who used to work there and had a few drinks at the bar. The bartender was hilarious and poured well but I would still try and deter anyone from drinking at a restaurant bar in their free time. It's simply too expensive for what you're getting. I didn't have anything to eat so I can only give three stars for the bar experience.
The All American Grill occupies an old Trophy's location. Stylistic elements such as the red metal around the windows are still present but the rest of the place is set up like your average upscale sports bar/restaurant.
Yep.
After being drastically let down early this week by American Airlines (see my AA review), I really needed a place to restore my faith in businesses that rep the name of the good old US of A. This place did just the trick. At first, I assumed that any restaurant located next to a Doubletree Hotel and behind a shopping center would be about as worth going to as a no-legged man attending an ass kicking contest. Boy was I wrong!
It used to be a Trophy's, which according to previous Yelp reviews was far from being deserved of that title. All American Grill on the other hand can have a trophy, medal, ribbon, plaque, round of applause, chest bump, fist pound, ass slap, barrel roll, "We're Number One" chant, and a hug. Sorry, I got a little carried away, but on the reals I dug it.
My buddy and I walked in and were greeted very pleasantly by a hostess whom, they may have named the joint after because she was about as All American as females get. We opted to sit outside even though the dining room was very spacious and had some sweet flatscreens at the bar. Either would have been a great choice, but it was a nice evening so went with the patio.
Our server was on her stuff and seemed to know the menu really well. We were unaware they were participating in restaurant week, but after she informed us we were all about it. (3 courses for $20)I went with the portabella mushroom salad and the swordfish. Both were on point in terms of taste. The fish literally melted in my mouth! We were only let down a bit by the portion size, but then again it was a restaurant week special, and both my friend and I are very heavy eaters.(We've both won eating competitions in the past)
Some people have a sweet tooth, well I have a meat tooth. Usually if a server asks me if I feel like dessert, I will say yes and order another entrée. Not the case here. Besides the fact it came with the special the snickers pie sounded so good I had to give it a shot. It did not disappoint.
The other aspect of this place I want to point out is their happy hour. They have some great signature cocktails for only 5 bones. That's pretty killer for quality drinks like mojitos and bloody marys.
All in all, I would say that this place was a splendid (yes, I really do sometimes speak the word splendid) experience. From the friendly service to the affordable cocktails to the killer grub--All American Grill you've made me love my country again.
The name didn't instantly grab me. Many people use "all American" but don't really mean it; my rant on that will be left to another forum. I sit at the bar and am pleasantly surprised with a decent beer selection; they have one of my favorites, Black Butte.
Their Philosophy:
"The All American Grill was founded with the passion to support the spirit of American independence. Each taste and each drink, wherever possible, has been sourced from the American artisans, workers, and entrepreneurs that knitted together the fabric of America's economy. We endeavor to create a dining experience for our guests with the added value of supporting Americans from coast to coast."
Sold.
Food could use a little more pizzazz hence 4 not 5 stars. I am making a conscience effort to not do chains, to give more love to the small business, and to go as American as I can...this place helps me do all three.
Had a great lunch with a group of friends in the Mission valley area. First time in the place and find that the service and food was outstanding. Very friendly staff who couldn't have been more attentive to our needs and thirsts. Compliments to the management.
Interesting. My date and I stopped by out of sheer perplexity. All American Grill. Hmmm... to match their curiously ambiguous name and characteristically blank exterior decor, their slogan should be "we serve food."
But that's enough about first impressions. Once inside, the decor and nighttime lighting were pleasant...if a little nightclub-y. The staff is very nice and attentive, however. Booth seats are about 20-feet high but they're comfy and they provide an unobstructed view out the windows.
The menu may seem limited at first, but that's only because they've eliminated the standard "run-of-the-mill" versions of entrees that you can get for $5 less across the street at Denny's. The take on American dishes here is nicely different and notably brave.
My date, who devoured his dinner in the most adorable fashion ever, ordered a chicken dish that started with something like "Old MacDonald." It looked great. I would've asked for a bite but it was a first date and I didn't want to cross the dreaded "line."
Anyway, I ordered the Wine Country pizza. Black figs, arugula, red grapes, prosciutto and something close to feta cheese topped my colorful pizza. The concept was fresh and mouthwatering, but the cheese and prosciutto combo met my tongue with a bit too much salt. It was a great idea, though! Maybe try a seasoned mascarpone in the recipe instead?
Considering the place was dead that Sunday night, our food came out a little slow. But our server kept us up to date so we never felt abandoned.
All this place needs is a little advertisement in LGBT media and Margarita action on the terrace for it to become the hottest new eatery in town.
...And maybe waiters in American flag speedos would hurt either!
We've been to All American Grill twice and it will become a regular hangout! First, everything on the menu is made in America, which sort of limits the hard alcohol list, but they were very willing to let us taste before ordering!
Then, the appetizers are fantastic! I recommend the oysters rockefeller and the calamari (very tender, not over-salted, great sauces). For entrees, the steak is tender and perfectly cooked, the chicken is tender and tasty, and my friend had the clams linguini and raved -- lots of clams and great sauce (she recommends the cook make a bit more sauce for sopping). And for dessert -- the pannacotta is to die for. Good coffee, too.
This place is at the very west end of Hazard Center -- poor signage, so just keep driving in until you see it! You'll be glad! Free parking, too. AND there are lots of TV's for sports, or sit on the deck if you want quiet.
This used to be Trophy's. Same location. They took out most of the cases, opened up the room for a more airy feel hired a staff w/clues included, and raised the bar on the quality of the food.
Everything on the menu, and in the bar is made in America. Had a GREAT steak dinner for a decent price. Diverse menu, presentation was both "pretty" and tasty, good prices and knowledgeable staff. I'll be back again and again.
Check out their website: http://www.aagrill.com.
Finally! Great food by the Double Tree!
We had dinner here the other night and I must say it was quite good. The service is a little suspect but the food was great. It is nice to see that there is an establishment that serves All American Stuff. The signature dish this night was swordfish and it was exceptional. Keep up the good work!!!
DO NOT GO HERE FOR RESTAURANT WEEK.
My family and I went here for restaurant week since it was $20 per person for a 3 course meal. Sure sounds like a great deal but boy were we wrong.
The place was not that crowded so we were seated right away. After looking at the menu for a couple minutes, we all quickly decided what we wanted since there are 3 choices each for the appetizer, main course, and dessert. Our red headed waitress came by and asked what drinks we wanted. We all ordered water and one person ordered a beer. Not long after that, our drinks were brought to us and we gave her our food orders.
4 of us ordered the portobello mushroom appetizer and 1 of us ordered the salad. We had asked for the goat cheese to be put on the side for two of the mushroom appetizers but we ended up not even having it at all on any of ours since they ran out of goat cheese. The quality of the appetizers was delicious though.
When it was time for our main course to come out, we got swordfish, pork chop, and steak, but were missing an additional pork chop and steak. Since we expected the rest to come out soon, the three of us dug in to our dishes. The swordfish was edible. I wanted to taste seafood, not the ocean itself. As for the medium done steak, half of it was medium while the other half was well done. The texture was a bit mushy too similar to meatloaf. At least the pork chop was perfect.
The waitress came by our table twice and mentioned the other food was coming right up. Right up to where I wonder. By the time the three of us finished our food, the other two were still sitting there starving and we were running low on water. I am an extremely slow eater compared to everyone I know and for the first time by default, I was not the last one who was full and done eating.
We sat there for a while longer but gave up eventually. We walked up to the front and asked if we could pay for what we ate and cancel the rest. Although it was not the waitress's fault, she should/could have compensated us in some way. We ended up getting charged a total of $71.58. $20 for our three meals, $6 for the beer, then the tax. Sure, we may have had 5 appetizers, and 3 main courses, and a beer, but sooooooooo not worth that amount. I would comment about the dessert that was supposed to come along with the meals, but since we didn't get any, I can't say anything about it.
You'd think the restaurant would be ready to serve all those dishes in a timely manner since it's not exactly a whole lot to choose from. Also, you wouldn't expect them to run out of ingredients for those dishes. Don't participate in Restaurant Week if you're not prepared to provide a decent meal and service for it. All in all, the whole experience there sucked we none of us will ever go there again regardless of how their food and service is on a regular night.
Wow! I would call All American Grill a diamond in the Mission Valley rough! As you can see from the reviews, everything is sourced from the good ol' USA. The food is very good and the domestic beer selection is great--something for everyone. Easy to find (where Trophy's used to be in Hazard Center) and so convenient to the trolley! I ate here before the MNF Chargers game and it worked out perfectly!
I stopped by All American Grill with my sister who was visiting from out of town as we were tired from shopping. What a great idea. This place has new ownership and they have totally changed the decor, the menu, and offer great wines, which you typically do not find in a sports bar. Our bartender was so friendly and knowledgeable and they are promoting American made and local vendors. We had great burgers and were able to catch every sporting event on their many tvs. I will definitely return for football season.
the lemon drop made with organic lemonade or juice is awesome. the bbq pizza and apps were yummy. we will be back!
Seriously, I can't give ZERO stars? After sitting down to what we thought would be a quick restaurant week meal showcasing the newish restaurant's food, we SLOWLY AND PAINFULLY learned that was not to be the case. We had promptly arrived at the restaurant for our 6:15 p.m. rezzy; we order, we make small talk, 15 minutes pass, no drinks, a half hour passes, no apps, no first course. A soup and a salad are placed in front of 2 of the 11 people at the meal, BUT they are taken away because they belong to the table next to ours. Mediocre apps and first course finally show up. Soup is cold and has no tasted, mushroom salads are super salty, iceberg wedge and vinegarette??? really? Way better with ranch or w/blue cheese. An hour and a half passes no entrees. We look and look for our waitress, we ask the busboy for a manager, we give them 5 minutes to start bringing food. Some entrees arrive. We ask at this time for the desserts, because lord knows when they will come, maybe at 10? My swordfish finally arrives about 5 minutes after everyone else's. I try to cut into it with my fork, so its not fork tender, still okay I think since it smells fresh. I use the knife, cut it, take a bite, IT IS RAW AND COLD ON THE INSIDE. It is not safe to eat raw swordfish! The other person having swordfish has the same problem w/hers. No waitstaff to send it back to the kitchen with. Do we want to wait? I END UP CARRYING BOTH PLATES TO THE KITCHEN! By this time over 2 hours have passed. We get our swordfish back and it is cooked, everyone else has finished or stopped eating their meal by this point and into their dessert. We should have taken the advice of the one star review and just paid for our apps and left. We did get comped part of our meal, but uh,so not worth it. The woman working the front was shocked (although I can't understand why she would be) when I answered her question of "how was dinner" with "terrible". DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU HAVE A FEW HOURS OF YOUR LIFE TO WASTE ON MEDIOCRE FOOD!
