Though I've never ventured over to the hot foods area for any of the pasta, and only once did I have the pizza (it was bland), I keep going back to All About Food for the make-your-own salads. As a very picky eater, their options satisfy even my weirdest combinations, and the lettuce and all its fixings are at least fresh. The bread is nothing to write home about, however.
Bathroom Grade: N/A. Normally, I just run across the street to an NYU building.
No, no extra star for the creative name. Surely, the person who named the cafe was either fired (surely) or owns the joint (sad). I hope he/she isn't as inept at running the place as he/she is at being creative - perhaps the person's an immigrant (or worse, illiterate)?
Illiterate or immigrant or not, All About Food Cafe is all about being lame and generic and stupid.
I mean, despite all the limitless possibilities in the world, the best you can do is a bunch of mediocre and boring "typical American lunch" type of mumbo-jumbo food?
Definitely makes me cry a little inside. The little boy in me is in tears. Snot may be running into open mouth. Tastes a bit salty. Prob haven't washed face since last night.
I took a high school classmate's family around (I really didn't know them, which made for just a weird conversation when the odd, frumpy father went from being a nice guy to having his temper flare up like a thermometer in July. It reminded me of the character from that Sherlock Holmes story about the governess posing as a couple's daughter to fool the real daughter's fiance, case of the beeches perhaps? An electric blue dress was involved. Anyway, the father reminded me of the father in that story, jolly looking fellow until satan's fire shoots out of his eyeballs).
The sandwich I had here was quite tasty, some spicy mustard, ham, cheese, fixin's, on a nicely toasted roll. Its mostly just a brightly lit cafeteria for the NYU kids (its right across from the Silver Center) to get quick lunches if they want to actually sit down or if they don't see anything at Space Market or the over-priced deli over by Broadway. They accept Campus Cash.
Eh.
In my never ending quest to find the best salad in the area, I've tried the tossed, choose your own "fixins" salad here and it's okay, pretty on par with any other place you would go to. It's just I get the feeling this place is dirty and there is something unsavory about the pasta and pizza bars. Plus whenever I come here there is always DRAMA between a cashier and a patron, which is kinda annoying.
Standard NYC deliteria that has a college cafeteria feel since it's so close to NYU (I wonder if they take Campus Cash!)
The salad is a little pricy - costs $7 for 4 ingredients. The chicken and dressing selections are pretty good though.
The pasta bar is a better value. Paid about the same for penne alla vodka w/ chicken. It wasn't fantastic but not bad for a cafeteria.
They also have sandwiches (pre-made and custom), pizza, and burritos and omelets to order. I've heard decent reviews of each.
There's 15 tables or so for dining in. I think most people take their orders to go.
So solid enough place for a quick, generic meal in the area...
I've been here a few times, and it's ok. Generally, I just come for the pizza (buy 2 pizza slices, get a free coke!) To be honest though, the pizza is generally a thin and a little greasy.
I tried getting a vegetarian burrito here once-- unfortunately, it was didn't have a lot of flavor and I ended up throwing it out. To be fair, I've never tried their burgers, which other reviewers said were pretty good.
I only come here really when I'm with a large group-- with a big space full of cafeteria-style seating, it's one of the few cheap places in the area that you can go to with a big group.
$5 minimum on credit cards.
Another member of the panini--pizza-salad-to-order clones around the NYU-area (which also include Cafe University & Campus Eatery). All About Food has a leg up on the others due to its high-ceilinged, airy space and its plentiful seating. However, like the others, it's still basically a dump. The salad bar looks fresh and they have a big selection of ingredients, but their dressings are really terrible(get it on the side), and, like others have said, they're over-priced, though they do come with a slice of bland bread, which you usually have to ask for. I had a decent pre-made turkey-cranberry sandwich for lunch once. I haven't been tempted enough to sample their pizza or hot foods, mostly because they look so unappetizing. Coffee is self-serve; big selection of packaged sweets, chips, snacks, and candy.
standard nyu fare. burgers, pizza, salads, sandwiches, paninis, pasta. the white ricotta slice is soooo good. their salads are ok but kind of overpriced. like $8 for a small salad. and their dressings suck. sandwiches and pizza are good.
i'm only giving the 4 stars for the ricotta slice.
Their toss salad bar is pretty damn good, pricey, but good. But then again, what can you expect from an NYU eatery other than a high price tag? I guess it just goes with the territory. I would recommend avoiding the pizza unless you get there as soon as it gets out of the oven, later in the day, it's just not so great. I do love the pound cakes that they carry...mmmm, butter.
I use to get lunch here all the time when I was at NYU. Surprisingly, their burgers are amazing. Big and juicy. Yum yum. And the penne alla vodka for $5.50 can't be beat either. Great cafe for a cheap lunch (unless you're in the mood for a salad in which case you'll pay up the ass!!)
All About Food offers all the food groups you can imagine to NYU's campus - tossed salads, pizza, pasta and burgers. You name it, they serve it. They're less pricey than their nearby competitors and it shows - the place is packed by lunchtime. They're Panini lunch special is the best value - $5.50 for a panini and soda - much less than the delis in the area.
