Love the Cardio Hip-Hop and the Cardio Strip classes. You can always just 'drop in' and they have great instructors (fave being Jacqueline).
They are extremely high-paced, fun, and you burn a good 600 calories on average (I've worn a monitor).
My only complaint is that it seems a bit cliquey. It sounds silly, but there's a feeling of being categorized as a 'dancer' and a 'non dancer.' There are regulars who attend every single class, and then people like me who do just drop-ins. Would be nice to see more of a welcoming atmosphere for people who aren't a part of the company and just want to drop in once-a-week. -

I was obsessed with Hip Pop dancing class with Jacqueline Howard on Tuesday. Even that I lived far far away I will be very happy to "commute" here to take the class. Now I moved to a different city, I missed All About Dance class so much.

I take Youth Fundamentals Ballet II and Modern II classes here at All About Dance. They are fun and challenging too. 5 stars about the classes and teachers!
Unfortunately, the classes are a bit on the pricey side.
The studio is also bad with communication with their students. For example, my parents never knew about the recital fee (around $80 per class.. also expensive) until after the date it was supposed to be pay so now they'll have to pay $10-20 extra. I usually get to and from class by myself so my parents aren't in the studio much. I guess what I'm trying to say is that All About Dance seems to relay on in-studio contact with students and parents, not via phone or email which makes more sense.
Also some of the front desk staff don't really seem to know what is going on with all the classes which can be difficult and annoying for students.
As other reviewers have mentioned, it is a bit cliquey. -

I wanted to get back into dancing, because I missed something I enjoyed. So I researched studios and decided upon All About Dance. Of course I was hesitant because I have been out for so long, but I said "oh well, it's a good work out." I decided on ballet, becuase I liked the discipline.
So prior to signing up for any class, I called the studio earlier in the day to ask which one I should sign up for. I told her that I have been out for a long time, about 10 years, but have been on point before, she said with confidence, "Oh you can do Ballet II." I naturally signed up for that class.
After the first exercise, the class gets interrupted by Jon, and suggests I go to a more intermediate class. I totally understand if I am not with the rest of the class as far as skill, but was it necessary to outcast me? Very UNPROFESSIONAL! Take me out or the room and to the side. I have pride here and you just took that away.
More or less, let's remember I called this studio to ask what each skill level meant, and THEY suggested the class. I thought I made it clear that I have not dance in a LONG time. They set me up for disaster. Not to mention the instructor was absolutely unprofessional and RUDE, this isn't the Joffrey.
I was absolutely embarressed due to their arrogance and unprofessionalism. -

I love All About Dance! I'm not a dancer, and have never been a dancer- a klutz is more like it!
That said, we do the routines enough time to learn them all and the instructors are so encouraging/motivating/enthusiastic, that they're more interested in you enjoying yourself and getting a good workout than getting every single little thing right. As someone who is not the most coordinated person , I appreciate this :)
AAD has helped me a lot with my flexibility. I also like using different parts of my body other than those for running and biking (which is what I'm usually doing). Though the classes are a bit pricey to do all the time, I like to go here to change up my routine.
The workouts are great- I'm really sore the next day (in all the right places!), and love how they're so different each time I go.
All the instructors I've had have been wonderful, and I love the new dance space! -

I've been a fan of All About Dance for a while now and am even happier with the new location (even though it's now not walking distance from my home). The larger rooms were really needed! I only have taken the cardio classes...dance, strip, hip strip, hip hop. These definitely are not technical classes but are fun routines that work out your body. It's sad but true...I review a class based on how much I sweat and that's what definitely happens during one of the cardio dance classes.
Things to note...there is a warm up and cool down period to the class. You learn a short dance routine and do it over and over (to different songs with different beats). There is usually some floorwork such as pushups/planks (hence the sweating...). No one really judges anyone so those beginners should not worry about feeling foolish in class. The instructors are great and really motivating.
I have been able to call on the day of and get into a class. I find that the later classes are less crowded. I've never been here on Saturday. And this is a typical (well used to be) Lincoln Park establishment. So don't say no one warned you. Most of the participants are in good shape.
As for feeling sore the next day, it depends on the class. Obviously if you work out muscles that you have not in a while, you will be sore...no matter what stretching exercises were done before or after the class and no matter if you regularly work out or not.
The classes are a little on the pricey side but I am in need of a fun, workout class to break up the monotony of my own workouts in the gym. -

I've been going to All About Dance since December, averaging one class per week. I've taken the Cardio Hip-Hop, Cardio Strip, and MTV Hip-Hop. If you want to have FUN and work your ass off, this place is for you. If you want a more technical class, your best bet is probably Lou Conte or Joel Hall. (Note: I have not taken a jazz or ballet class here, so my last comment may or may not be true). I've take classes at both Conte and Hall and prefer All About Dance because the instructors just let you DANCE and be yourself. I grew up dancing and am done with being critiqued by dance instructors.
The instructors are friendly, upbeat and play great music that gets you moving. I've talked with fellow All About Dance goers and some like different instructors for different reasons. I usually take Whitney for hip-hop and Kate for strip, both are fantastic.
Like other reviews, I'll echo that it's a bit pricey. I would come here twice a week if it wasn't so expensive. Sometimes they'll have deals like 5 classes for $60. I snatch those up right away.
The classrooms are small, but I suspect this will change once they move locations this coming fall.
If you want to have an awesome workout and love to let go and just dance, All About Dance is where it's at. -

Pros...My 6 yr old loves it! Small ballet/jazz class, individual attention, exercise and lots of fun. Friendly & great staff. Cons... I do wish for a bit more correction, so I usually watch and we review at home.
Note to those complaining about price...I travel nationwide and have found these prices comparable in other cities. They were willing to prorate if committing to several classes. -

Whitney is my daughters teacher here. This new facility is amazing and they are all so enthusiastic and caring. My daughter loves to dance so so much. However, she seemed to have a difficult time in the new social environment.
But leave it to Whitney to be open to discussion and figure out the best way to help a little dancing queen blossom. Her focus on individual attention, despite such a high-energy environment, is so helpful. She will even be sure to give me a "thumbs-up" through the window.
She has given my daughter the individual attention she needed to warm up and each class gets better an she loves it. Thanks Whitney! -

I have taken classes as an adult and my daughter is taking a hip-hop class here. Jessica, the owner, is an amazing teacher. She has fantastic energy and is really the heart of this operation. However, since they moved into the new facility, I feel like they aren't managing their growth that well. It used to be you would walk in, and the owner and/or instructor would talk to you, know your name, etc...now I feel like the place has become a bit of an assembly line with kids running around everywhere, and not a lot of individual attention.
I was a little wary of putting my 8 year old in a hip hop class, and we won't be doing it again next year. I think the instructor is good and the dance moves are good, but it bugs me that the girls listen to Ke$ha, etc...just not age-appropriate in my opinion. I also don't like that the instructor never seems to make much of an effort to talk to the girls or the parents outside of class. I think she's a good dance teacher, but I've seen the girls say hello to her on the street outside the dance studio and she essentially ignores them. I'm not sure all the dance teachers necessarily really want to be teaching kids; I get the feeling sometimes they all just want to be out dancing at clubs and getting paid.
The other negative is the recital this year has been a mess, and on top of a $52 costume and a $30 "recital fee," the tickets are $20 a pop--even for children. So, for my husband and I to go and take our 2 other children, we're paying $80. I know there is a cost associated to having kids, but this is ridiculous! I don't see why the tickets need to cost that much. -

Bought two groupons because my husband and I have always wanted to take dance classes so we thought why not? We took one drop in class and it was not really our cup of tea. The instructor was very nice and patient with everyone but the thing we didn't enjoy was that they have you switch partners pretty frequently. The instructor said it's so we get more experience dancing with different folks with different skill levels. It's not that we're attached at the hip or anything but we personally want to learn how to dance with each other more than learning to dance with other folks.
So, we opted to do a personal dance lesson instead in preparation for our wedding. That was a much better experience because we really learned how to dance with each other. And, it helped because we didn't just sway on the dance floor for our first dance! -

I love this place and I am horrible at dancing! I bought a month of unlimited classes and my faves are cardio hip hop, cardio strip tease, and cardio dance (mtv hip hop was kind of hard!). The sculpting class was a good workout too but I prefer the dance classes. The instructors were great (some better than others but still all great). The classes do get pretty full and you dont have a lot of room to move around but it's fine, everyone makes room for each other. I even love the warm up exercises - great ab workouts!

A friend from one of the dance classes told me that I am obsessed.... well she's right! I've been going to All About Dance for almost 2 months now and I can't get enough. This place is full of energy and friendly faces as soon as you walk through the door. I've only taken Lisa, Whitney (who are the two most energetic people I've ever met) and Jacqueline's (whose also full of life) classes. The cardio classes are amazingly fun, you literally don't feel fatigue until you're done with the routine after a song. Lisa's MTV Hip Hop class is super fun and the routine is always hype. The instructors motivate you to "shake ya booty", everyone is extremely engaging, and even if you aren't the best dancer I know I always feel like an MJ back up dancer when I leave. Strongly recommend!

So, I thought I could dance . . . turns out, I was wrong.
I took a Cardio Hip Hop class at All About Dance this morning. When they say Cardio, they mean it. This is a workout. I had a ton of fun, got a great workout, and my competitive nature will force me to go back, just so I can see if I get better.
So, why only three stars? The drop-in classes are expensive -- $18 for a 50 minute class. A few things left me feeling like I might not have gotten my moneys worth. The instructor didn't have music pre-selected, but would go over to her iPod and sift through her library looking for music at the appropriate tempo. Her iPod battery even died at one point and she had to ask someone else for help. Don't get me wrong, I was grateful for the break, but I showed up ready to play -- I expect the same from the instructor.
Most of the class is spent doing the same routine over and over again. Even by the end, I think there was only one student who could do the routine, so the repetition is necessary to a degree, but a little more variety would have been nice. We also did some ab work and a tiny bit of tricep work. I was pretty surprised that the instructor didn't spend any time going over proper form and didn't walk around the studio to correct bad form. I understand that this is a dance class, but if you're going to put the extra stuff in your routines, you best be ready to instruct.
All in all, this is a fun class and I recommend it if you're looking for something to spice up your work out routine.Listed in: Get in Shape, Girl

Over the weekend I took a cardio strip tease class at All About Dance. Damn, my knees hurt but it was FUN!!!
The dance studios are a little small, but the instructors were very nice. I learned some hot moves, bruised both my knees, and got road rash on my ankle from the wooden floor. I had a blast.
In my opinion, the classes are a tad bit expensive, but I still plan to go back again to do a few drop-in classes. I haven't danced since high school so I want to make sure that I've still "got it" before I pay for a block of classes. -

I purchased the Chicagofitness passbook that gave me a coupon to two FREE classes at this studio. I never got to take a class because they wouldn't honor it even though it doesn't expire until DECEMBER 2011...they don't know how to run a business!

I arranged a private strip tease class for my BFFs Bachelorette party back in August, and we could not have had a better time! The class was more burlesque than "striptease" and we learned a little dance number that we did in groups for one another.
The instructor was ADORABLE, sweetest girl ever, listened to us when we needed to see things again, and had so much energy that she made everyone really enjoy it! Everyone got a boa to use (unlike other places where they charge) and we were allowed to bring in champagne and whatever else we wanted.
If you are considering this for a bachelorette party, I would recommend leaving time to shower before going out for the night, since it is kind of a workout.
Loved it! -

So far, so good. I was interested in hip hop dance (but very nervous) and I believe it was some yelpers that mentioned this place...
I called All About Dance on a Sunday, I think, to ask which of their classes would be the best place to start, Jessica called back that same day and suggested Cardio Hip Hop. She was reassuring in her message, teling me that she gets a lot of phone calls from beginners like myself, and Cardio Hip Hop is a good place to start because there is a lot of repetition.
I did a drop in class Saturday morning and had a great time. I felt really comfortable but challenged. I can feel it today, too, in my legs. Be careful, I think the instructors are probably a little more flexible than the average person, and the music is loud so you get into it...but today....
Nevertheless I'm going back. It was fun and I've discovered some muscles I didn't know I had. Also great for social anxiety. i was nervous, I did it, I survived...you may be reading the words of the next American Idol! (Just kidding, there will be NO SINGING) -

So, All About Dance. I bought the Groupon January 2010, started the classes in September, and when I created my online account it said my classes expired in September of 2011. Cool, a year. I thought that was what I had initially read. So I hoarded them and neglected to check again on my account. I enjoyed the classes (hence the two stars) but was seriously glad I had gotten the Groupon deal as they are really quite pricey. But then I had three left that expired. What?! Okay, yes, I went back to the Groupon and realized it was my mistake. The classes expired a year from the purchase date, and not a year from the start date. Fine. I lost out on three classes. It was still a good deal and even though I'm sad, it was my fault and I'm pretty sure I'll live.
The reason for the two stars however is that I e-mailed AAD to confirm this, and to ask another, totally unrelated, question, and I never got a response back. Not a sorry, you're a dope who can't read and those expired in January. Nothing. I didn't expect them to give me the three classes back--that would've been kind and going over and above, which I don't expect. But if you're going to place an e-mail address on your website, be professional enough to respond, even if you have to give bad news. We can take it, I promise!

I heart this place and the teachers are so incredibly nice and wonderful. After only a few classes I had asked Whitney to burn me a copy of a CD, not only did she not hesitate when she said yes, but she had it for me the next week. Their monthly prices are a bit on the expensive side, but the classes are great and totally worth it. I suggest supplementing your dance classes with Tone & Tighten!

It is overpriced. Simply put...instructors have been nothing fantastic. Adult ballet that is, otherwise I don't know about any of that other crazy stuff individuals engage in....
Class was like $18 bucks or something. I can go to the Joffrey Ballet for $10 as a student and its the JOFFREY. Only a block away from my condo so its convenient and I want to like it, I just don't. -

I took my first dance class of my entire life here the other day. I have this little booklet with dozens of free passes to workout places all over the city and my friend and I decided to go here. We took the strip tease cardio class. I haven't sweat that much since high school volleyball conditioning week. It was an awesome workout. Yeah, it's only 50 minutes long but I was already cursing the instructor 15 minutes in. I would have puked if we went any longer. Plus, they are super nice. I literally had no idea what I was doing (I'm the kind of person who can't clap on beat) but the instructor was really encouraging.
It was a fun, heart pumping workout. -

I bought a Groupon for All About Dance one year ago, and over the course of the year I used the 8 classes. I did not find any of the classes to be anything special. I took a few jazz classes, cardio hip hop, and the dance body strength class. Everything was fine, but not worth the cost to come back on a regular basis.
The Dance Body class was a little disorganized. It was a fine workout, but I think it could have been structured better. The cardio classes are incredibly repetitive. I am a dancer and pick up choreography quickly so I appreciate classes in which you learn multiple routines.
The new studio is very nice. All of the instructors and staff members were always pleasant. -

My friends and I did a private cardio strip class this evening at All About Dance. The dance studio is adorable, the instructor was very energetic, and the class was tons of fun. They offer weekly classes in ballet, jazz, hip hop, cardio strip tease, tap, salsa dancing, and many other forms of dance for both children & adults. The atmosphere is a lot more fun than the lou counte dance studio that I take tap lessons at, but the classes don't seem to be as challenging (lou counte is much more serious since it's part of Hubbard Street Dance company). I highly recommend private cardio strip tease classes for birthday parties, bachelorette parties or any fun occasion!

Review from Jessica G.
I've been a dancer my whole life, so when I moved to Chicago one of the first things I looked for was a dance studio. This place was only 2 blocks from my house so I was SO excited! But when I signed up for my first class Cardio Strip Tease* I was disappointed by the 2nd lesson. I felt I WAY overpaid for the quality of instruction. The teacher couldn't even count. I mean seriously, there are 8 beats in most music phrases and she just could not figure out how to fit 8 counts of dancing to 8 beats of music. Also, I would wake up the morning after class with most of my leg muscles pulled. I am an experienced dancer and would stretch myself before the class, but she was doing moves that we never warmed up for. Also, it may have just been my instructor, but she seriously played exactly the same music for every class. It got so repetitive. Lastly, the class was way over booked and they would let more people "drop in" every week. I had a tiny little 2'x2' square to dance in, if I wanted to avoid colliding into nearby dancers. They let 20 people into a room that should have had not more than 10. Experienced dancers: I think you'll be disappointed. This place could be fun for beginners, but their technique is not great, so I don't recommend it for children (they can easily sustain injury without proper technique training).
I think the trick to this place if you absolutely want to try it is to first "drop in" on classes you might be interested in (though, it is pricey to do this at $18 a pop). Once you find a class and an instructor you like, only then should you sign up for the whole session.
*Don't be fooled- the class has nothing to do with taking off your clothes =) -

In an effort to (1) supplement my running workouts with something that enhances balance and flexibility, and (2) recapture the ballerina memories of my childhood, I enrolled in the 8-week Ballet I for adults class here this summer. The cost was very reasonable, and the class is something that I now look forward to on Wednesday evenings! Not the "classical" dance studio I grew up with (in the room next to the ballet class is "Cardio Strip Tease"), All About Dance is non-intimidating and the instructors and staff are very friendly.

I have taken a bunch of classes here this past year, and let me say, It is THE MOST FUN way to exercise. I love it. A friend and I have started a two class saturday tradition. We get together an hour before class and have coffee, then we take cardio hip hop and then cardio strip tease. We are barely walking and dripping with sweat by the end, but we have a blast.
There are a lot of people in some of the classes, but it is so much fun. I am enamored with our instructor, gara... she is awesome and a really fun person to hang out with on Saturday mornings!
I have also taken ballet- which i loved, but just could never make my schedual work with weekday classes...
Don't be scared if you are absolutely without any dance talent... I don't think I will ever feel comfortable doing a strip tease, or dancing hip hop ever, but it is a fun way to move your body and get more comfortable dancing in front of people sober! which i think is a good life skill... -

I just took my first class here- as I just moved here from San Francisco and I have to say I am WAYYYYY disappointed. For the cost $18 for a drop in class that is ONLY 50min- back in SF class is 90 min for $12 (10 if you buy a 10 class card). I took Hip Hop II - and the instructor didn't even have specific choreography for the song. She just picked whatever she wanted and made the dance fit the REALLY FAST BEATS- even if it was HORRIBLE!!!! I guess my standards are HIGH- as I truly came from an AWESOME place and will be very HARD to BEAT.

I credit this class for helping me lose the 40+ pounds i have in the past 18 months. it is so much fun and every week it is something different. i do admit that some of the ladies are better than others (i miss you lisa m) i just can't help but pay the $$$. most people spend $100 a month at a gym that you don't even go to and do the same thing over and over again. this place is extremely well run and i walk out of there every night sweaty and glad i went. i also like (someone else mentioned this as well) that i have a different set of muscles hurt after each class. i run a lot so i'm not sure to the abs/arms stuff and i love every second of being sore. Thank you all about dance for saving this once fat girl

This is a great place for a bachelorette party event! We started out our festivities here with the cardio strip tease class. Our instructor, Gina, was friendly and very professional. I was able to request that our class be minimally sweaty (we were going out afterward) and she continually asked us about our comfort levels during the class (e.g., do you want to learn a more sexy or flirty dance?). She also caught on quickly that few of us had true dancing talent (ha) and that we were there to have FUN and laugh at ourselves, not to learn to be strippers (unlike other dance classes in Chicago I researched for the event). That was very appreciated and we all had a blast.

I am taking Cardio Dance here and I'm really enjoying it. I going on 6 mile runs pretty frequently and exercise a lot, but I am so sore after every class I take and get to exercise all kinds of muscles that I never normally would. I love taking dance classes here and would recommend it before joining a gym any day. The classes zoom by and as long as you are taking beginner they will make sure you are comfortable and not leave you behind. Such a great place to take classes!

I've been dancing since I was a wee one but my body's been on a bit of a dance vacation. I've taken classes at a few of the more professional studios (Joel Hall & Joffrey) which I enjoyed but wanted something casual and laid-back. Enter All about Dance.
There are 2 studios but one studio connects thru another and there's a bathroom/water room/changing room, but it's only accessible thru the main studio too. The waiting room outside can be very tight especially if you come on a Saturday morning or for an early evening class (6 PM) when all of the kiddies are coming out of their classes.
It would be nice if the times between classes were staggered (one class could end at 6 and another start at 6:10 to give some warm-up time), but maybe they'll change the schedules for future sessions.
If you're looking for a fun way to exercise and even if you haven't had much dance experience I highly recommend the cardio strip tease. Hip-hop requires a little more skill but you repeat the combination enough that you should be able to pick it up quickly.
Gara's a great teacher and very high energy which is key. -

All about dance is awful! I tried to call them so many times, no one ever answered the phone, so I left them messages, no one ever called me back! I was so confused, but was deceived by their internet apperance that they are the best dance school in Chicago, so I registered a class on their website anyway. The next day I found that schedule would not work for me, so I called them again, of course it went to their voicemail again, I left another message, explained the situation, asked to call me back ASAP. NO ONE called me back. The first day of the class should be 6/1, no one calls me reminding me that. I did not show up for the first class because of conflict schedules, no one calls me back... I thought they went out of business, but today I checked my credit card transactions, they charged my credit card!!!! What kind of business is this? I had to go through all the work with my credit card company to get my money back. So this was my experience with them, do you think you can trust them with your money or credit card informaiton?

I took a drop in cardio hip hop class here with a friend. While it was definitely a good work out for me (note that I don't really work out all that much), I was a bit disappointed w/ the facilities overall. We came straight from work, like many others. We got there early with an extra half hour to spare before the class started. We asked if there was a bathroom to change into and the front desk attendant said that it was in the studio but that there was a class. On top of that, the class before us was running behind. By the time, we finally made it into the studio, there were quite a few of us who were rushing in and out of the bathroom to change and the instructor started before everyone was done. I actually think the instructor did a great job incorporating hip hop and cardio into the class. However, it was a bit disappointing that she didn't have a mic bc it was hard to hear her over the music blasting. There was also a vertical wooden bar in the middle of the mirror and depending on where you stood, it was nearly impossible to see what she was doing. The classes are also a tad bit pricey. While I think this is a great idea, I think there are a few more things they could do to make it better.

I'm in my second session of Cardio Strip Tease at All About Dance, and I just have to say that I LOVE it! It is a great non-intimidating place to take a dance class. I've found Cardio Strip to be a very good total-body aerobic work-out, but more importantly, it is so much fun. My fantastic bridesmaids also set up a Cardio Strip private class for my bachelorette party, and it was an absolute blast as well. Everyone, from my friends who love to dance to those who have two left feet, had a great time. Between my bachelorette party, my 2 sessions of strip classes, and some make-up classes I've taken, I've experienced 4 different teachers at All About Dance, and I can honestly say that they've all been great. If you don't understand a move or need them to slow down the teaching a bit, they are very receptive to that. The only drawback to All About Dance is that the space is a little small. The waiting area can get crowded between classes, and there is only one small one-person bathroom. The studios are fine for the most part, but the "blue studio" does get a little tight if there are more than 9 or 10 students, at least for Cardio Strip. The "pink studio" is a bit larger, and so they usually try to put the bigger class in there. Also, at times my Cardio Strip class will start a little late because the bathroom adjoins the blue studio, and we've often had to wait for the little girls in the classes before mine to finish changing and giggling with their friends in the bathroom before we can start. All in all though, I love All About Dance and would highly recommend it! Sign up early because I've found that weeknight session classes seem to fill up pretty quickly!
