I walked by with my boyfriend on Sunday wondering what the deal was. After finding very positive yelp reviews we stopped in! We split a wonderful lobster sandwich, no fillers, no diced vegetables, no shredded lettuce just seasoned lobster with mayo on warm, toasted, buttered sesame seed bread. So good. It's $14 dollars and they do take card! We split a sandwich and the bag of chips a block down by the Charles! We could have also sat at the front of the store, at their covered picnic benches or in the cute courtyard area! So happy to find something so good, comforting and uncrowded so close to my house.

*Another perk is usually when you go to buy lobster rolls at a fish market it always smells bad, like fish all around. It doesn't smell here at all!

**When we went everyone ordered and went to sit down. The woman inside left and came over to us with our food every time it was done, very gracious!

    Yum.

    "Only tourists overpay for lobster."

Alive and Kicking has some of the best cold lobster rolls in town, and for a very reasonable price. They don't waste money on decor or...um...seating, but they have AWESOME lobster rolls, thick with huge chunks of the freshest lobster; light on the mayonnaise; served between two slices of (very) buttered Scali Bread. And it. is. awesome.

I've never eaten in the "restaurant," which is basically a few pieces of outdoor furniture arranged on the storefront's front patio. I always take my lobster rolls to go. But, then, I've never made it all the way home with the sandwich either. It always gets scarfed at stoplights while I'm en route.

    Must visit.

They only serve lobster sandwiches, besides fresh fish to cook yourself, and for $13.95, they are cheap with the lobster.

The sandwich was good but not for the value. We had just had a lobster roll in west concord where there was so much lobster you were stuffed.

I am surprised in this college town that this is not a good value for the money.

    Two words.  Lobster Sandwich.

Alive and Kicking truly takes a no-frills approach to its lobster sandwiches - fresh lobster meat, not too much mayo, toasted sesame scali bread, and a bag of Cape Cod potato chips.  That's it.  Nothing more and nothing less.  They're not like the buttery lobster rolls with all sorts of condiments you might find elsewhere in the Boston area, but that's precisely why this place gets so much lovin'.  You might be asking yourself how that could possibly be.  Trust me, this is a purist's sandwich - you're not SUPPOSED TO mess with lobster.  How fresh is the lobster? The store actually holds a freaking aquarium filled with... you guessed it... alive and kicking lobsters.  Mmmmmmm.  This place actually sells all kinds of other fresh seafood at decent prices, which you buy raw and bring home, but every time I visit, I know what I'm getting!

Part of the trick is actually finding the place.  It's a tiny hole-in-the-wall that I STILL miss if I'm driving without paying attention... though I live merely two blocks away.  There are picnic tables outside, which kinda makes you feel like... you're at a picnic.

For one of the best, if not the best, pure lobster sandwiches in the Boston area, visit this place!

This place is ridiculous. If you are a fan of lobster rolls you will, literally, never have a better experience than Alive and Kicking. It's not a roll, it's a sandwich. Oh and by the way, it's absolutely incredible. The freshest lobster you can find and the friendliest people you could ever hope to meet. It's the only thing they make!

You can also get amazing, fresh seafood. Oysters, clams, lobsters etc.

But the sandwich is out of this world...

My friend texts me last night.  Says "Lily, we haven't seen you in ages.  Lets meet up for some food.  I know how much you love seafood, especially lobster."  I of course said "hell yeah,  where are we headed?"  Friend says "Alive and Kicking Lobsters."  Just the name alone -  I was thrilled and couldn't wait for tomorrow to come.

Its now tomorrow morning. I get up, get dressed nicely.  We head to Cambridge for this place.  We were looking for a restaurant, but noticed we were in a residential neighborhood.  We finally found the place and wow..it was a hole in the wall.  No seating of course because its dead winter and 10 degrees out today, so no picnic tables to be seen.  We go inside the little shack looking house and it was like a neighborhood seafood convenient shop.  All i saw were tanks with live lobsters and a frozen freezer with fish and other items like clam chowda.

We ordered 3 of the lobster sandwhiches since thats what they are credited for. They were about $14 each.  I was a little bummed we couldn't sit and eat at the place.  So we head back home.  Ripped the bag apart and tear into the sandwhich.  The sandwhich was amazing!  Soo much good lobster meat! (fillers?  what fillers?) My only disappointment was that by the time we got home and ate the sandwhich the bread was not all that toasty and crisp anymore.   But I was still satisfied.  I will definitely make an effort to head back to this place in the spring to get the full effect with hot, toasty bread.  I don't mind that this is a hole in the wall type place.  I happen to like them because I am there for the good food, not the fancy schmanchy place.

Oops, I forgot to mention that I also baught 2 dozen oysters.  Wow -  also amazing!  They were $1.25 each.  Came home, buddy chucked them and voila!  Fresh as fresh can get!  They were on the larger side of oysters.  Silly me I didn't ask them what kind they were or where they were from but who cares they were sooooo good.

I'm just going to get to the point here. Short and sweet.

This is the best damned lobster sandwich you'll ever eat. No, not a lobster ROLL. They will butter and grill bread, shove that bad boy as full as it can go with huge chunks of delicious lobster glued together with just the perfect amount of mayonnaise.

You can buy happiness. It costs about $14 and comes in the form of a lobster sandwich.

Shout out to Mehul A., thanks for an epic night.

Fresh lobsters were delish!  We felt kinda cruel throwing our lobsters into the boiling pot, but it was for the best.  Our appetites were well satiated =)  Lobsters here are def better than those a Shaw's (sorry to be Mr. Obvious here).  Wish I could offer more deets but we go 'em to-go.

They've also got frozen clam chowder in a pouch if you're in a hurry.  Warms up quite nicely (though there should be a better way than warming up the chowder in plastic bags in boiling water)

Amazing, fresh lobster for $14. I am not a big seafood fan but the lobster roll is competitive with a bite of anything I have had in Boston.

I have never seen anywhere quite like this place. You can see the whole business from the massive tank full of lobster to your left, the counter and kitchen in the center, and the office to your right. Everything is truly as fresh as it gets.

The only issue is that there is they squeezed about as much as they could out of their little spot and there is absolutely no room to sit inside so this is definitely a take-out only. The chowder was good but clearly outshone by the lobster roll.

Are you looking for a good, tasty and very authentic New England seafood lunch made with a little love and only willing to spend a little less than $20? If you said yes, this place will have your answer. I came over here one afternoon and decided to get a good lunch. I walked inside, and I was greeted by a kind and nice older lady. From the sound and accent of her voice, she was definitely a typical local New Englander that was born and raised here. She was ready to answer any questions before I made my order.

They serve a simple, no-nonsense sandwich, which consists of a toasted scali bread (Italian style bread that originates from New England) with butter spread on top of the bread, and a good helping of lobster. I took a bite out of this sandwich, and I was amazed. The toasty and crispy bread, combined with the slightly buttery flavor, and the meaty, tender, and very fresh lobster made this sandwich one of the most delicious lunches I have eaten in a while. From savouring every significant and tasty bite, I knew that this sandwich was made with a little love from that kind New England lady. It comes with Cape Cod potato chips, just making the dish even more authentic. The price is moderate, at around $14.

Another great and authentic but optional complement to the lobster sandwich, at $5 is the Clam Chowder soup. Although it is served in a small cup and $5 might be high, it's a really good clam chowder, with a good amount of clam meat and potatoes. Just adding the crackers provided made the soup even better. One tasty lobster sandwich, a bag of Cape Cod Potato chips, and a good small cup of Clam Chowder can make up a very authentic New England lunch and should make an empty stomach become full for a good several hours.

This place is not your typical restaurant, it is more of a market counter where you just grab and get your food. They have a really good selection of fresh and raw seafood to buy and take home to cook. The menu is very limited and straightforward: lobster sandwich, Clam Chowder, and steamed whole lobster. You can get tap water, canned, or bottled drinks as well. There's a good amount of picnic tables, giving this place a very typical New England seafood eatery style, making this place a great place to get lunch when the weather is more than 19 degrees Celsius outside.

The location may be far from public transport, but there are some parking spots if you want to drive here. It's at a good location, within a nice and quiet neighborhood in Cambridge.

Overall, this is a great choice if you want one of the best lobster sandwiches in Cambridge and in the Boston area at a reasonable price and it's definitely worth spending your $20 bill. From talking with this lady, and eating the food here, this is definitely one of the most authentic New England seafood places I have eaten in the area so far.

    Jon--

The name in itself attracted me (and my long-suffering wife) to this run-down shack of a gem. After two days of lobster-roll heaven on our New England road/food tour, we decided to get back to the basics. After trekking through a rather sketchy part of Cambridge, we walked up to a blue clapboard house with two cars in the front and a few picnic tables strewn about. Questionable indeed.

However, the lady inside knew exactly what we were looking for and helped us pick out two fine 1.5 lb lobsters, plucked from a saltwater tank that would not be out of place at the Cantonese seafood restaurants of my youth (where the waiter, cig dangling from his mouth, would show you the flopping fish that he picked out for your dinner as you sit at your table).

Result? Sweetest lobster meat ever. We ripped those two crustaceans apart and gobbled up every last morsel of lobster goodness that there was. Nothing but a steamed lobster and some drawn butter. We noshed on these two for around $30, so it was a pretty good bargain to boot.

    Jenny--

I will have to admit that I was a little worried as we walked up to this restaurant, located in what appears to be a residential neighborhood, on a Wednesday at noon time and the place was empty. But after such a far hike from the subway station, I was willing to try anything. The lobsters we picked were definitely alive and kicking. They were facing each other in the tub and even held hands. Very cute, but that wasn't enough for the husband and me to show any mercy. Not wanting to take up too much stomach space before dinner that night, we opted not to have anything else.

All of the seating here is outdoors. It was pretty chilly in November but warm enough when we sat in the sun. We waited about 20 minutes, and out came our two lobsters. I was very surprised at what a pretty, bright red color they were. The meat was super sweet. Definitely some of the best lobster I've ever had. As we were eating, a couple of businessmen in suits sat down to eat next to us.

Next time I may try the lobster sandwich or some soup, but I'd definitely want to have some steamed lobster again. Yum!

Years back, I had an out of town client I was bringing back to our office in HSq who spotted the name with a chuckle. "Only in the Republic of Cambridge would you have a fish shack packed into a 1940's gas station. Yeah," he went on, "they probably smoke the fish with cannabis. So, Cambridge."  The next day, I had our receptionist order their lobster sandwiches for his meeting. He and I headed over to pick up lunch.

His reaction when I pulled into the CROWDED parking area ... "You have got to be kidding!" Not knowing what we were having for lunch, he grumbled as we slipped into this TINY closet of a fish store - café. As he watched them grill up the last of the sandwiches his eyes grew to the size of limes. Yes, it took almost 12 minutes to negotiate a left turn out. YES, park down the street. You'll need the walk.

The client, at the close of the meeting, requested a stop back there en route to the airport. Whereupon, he purchased two for his trip back to London. The first of many drive bys he has  requested over the last 15 years. If it were not for his smart mouth, I'd still be driving by to get fish at Bread & Checkbook. Thanks to that cheeky Brit, Alive & Kickin has become our go to fish store. And yes, we love sitting under the make shift tin shack outside, reveling in our bliss watching the fools speed by.

Don't come here if you are expecting some classy lobster joint with waiter service and all that. Do come here if you are awesome, is pretty much how I would describe this little lobster lovin' spot.

You walk up to this shack like place, only to be greeted by people you know have been doing this business for a long long time. Lobster roll with heaping mouthfuls of lobster in it with a bag of cape cod chips for $14?? Unheard of, especially for a lobster roll as big as these ones are here!!

And whole lobster you say?? If s'more's were made for any other food besides graham crackers and chocolate and marshmallows, I firmly believe that the phrase should ultimately be applied to lobsters here. They let you take pictures of your lobster first, and they say that everyone now and then they get lobsters well over 10 pounds!! That is nuts! Then after your photo shoot with the lobster, off to be cooked it goes. Then a little while later, after you find yourself a seat at one of my picnic tables outside, your bright red lobster is brought in all of its glory complete with a huge container of some of the best buttery dipping goodness you can have. Clearly that butter sauce is not good for you, but that lobster is more than extra good for your food soul so that totally makes up for it!!

You get a bib, some crackers, and wet wipes for your hands, and you dig in and are instantly taken to lobster heaven. $16-17 for a 1.5 pound lobster is pretty good. And you know what else is? That lobster in your mouth.

Who knew, lobster sandwich in Cambridge! I can eat three to four of these. The lobster is sweet and crisp, so you know it's fresh, tossed lightly in mayonnaise (not overwhelming), served with two slices of white bread (I toss the top slice). :) Seating is outside to the left of the main entrance in a small sheltered area; picnic tables, you would never know your in cambridge.

This is the most hilarious lobster place you'll ever go to. They employ a technique known as "hostile branding" - not making the place at all approachable. They're gruff (at least at first), they have weird hours (who knows when they're open) and it's tucked back from the road, underneath a house on Putnam Ave.

All this only adds to the charm, because when you take your first bite into a lobster sandwich, you'll stop mid-thoug...

Seriously, it's not cheap ($13 for a sandwich and a bag of chips) but they're generous with the lobster, and my gosh does it taste good. They've got outdoor seating, most of it undercover, and if you're able to make it there during summer the effect of the lobster only seems amplified.

It's fantastic, one of those unique little Boston gems.

This isn't your classic New England lobster sandwich, but in a good way. This joint is semi-hidden in Cambridge (strange location) but serves up delicious lobster meat in huge portions. The sandwich (the only option) is 14 dollars but well worth it if you want real New England Lobster.

Forget the pricey places on the waterfront--take the no-frills sammy here and run (literally, it comes with a bag of chips in a plastic bag). Very delicious lobster in a humongous portion!

A very generous helping of lobster, but I can't help but feel a bit cheated with the bread. Yes, the bread is very good and buttery. But honestly, I feel like the scala bread is way too flimsy to hold up the lobster!

The place itself is teeny but they have a good number of picnic tables in front of the storefront to accommodate for sandwich eaters. They also sell chowder and some cuts of fish. Seems like they'd be super awesome with helping you with all your seafood cooking needs.

Spread a paper towel under your sandwich just in case you drop a glob of lobster. I am not above eating lobster from a dirty picnic table...

This is as good as it get's.
As they say, "This Is Lobstah!!!"
Not canned Lobster Meat, not that spray-painted flaked and formed White Fish,

    REAL LOBSTER!

Seriously, I've seen my friends cook a Chix Lobster and not get as much meat as was in the sandwich, and they spent more money, time and energy.
To me this is a bargain.  All the work is done, just sit, relax, eat and enjoy the company you're with!

Thank Goodness, they don't use those Hot Dog Rolls, sliced on the top.  The Bread was just perfect.  Anything less would have diminished from the sandwich.

The Price, well if you're on a budget, or used to eating off the Dollar Menu at McDonald's, it might have a "Sticker Shock!"
But those of use who know Sea Food, would never "Blink!"
(I pay $28.00 for a lb. of U-6 Shrimp, not Prawns, count the legs), and I've been eating Fresh Sea Food, since the early 50's)

Add a few million mosquito's, the gentle lapping of the Ocean on the Shore, and you'd be in any number of restaurant's on Barnegat Bay, NJ, in the 50's.

I didn't ask, but you might be able to bring your own Beverage, for us Adults.  But I wouldn't want to "Sully" it, considering it's so quiet!.

What I was impressed with, was the Owner, Louis Mastrangelo, sat at our table, then told us why there are no Fly's around.

    WHY?

I guess you'll just have to go there and ask him!

    If I could put 10 Stars, I'd put 12!!!!!

Chunks of lobster lightly dressed in mayo, sandwiched between 2 perfectly toasted pieces of sandwich bread with a sesame crust. Lots of other places will make it into a true salad with celery, onion, etc - not this place. They keep it real

Lobster sandwich + bag of chips = $13.95.

My advice - dont get the soda. They're incredibly sugary and just taste like sugar water. I got a lemonade and threw it away after 1 sip. It tasted really artificial.

Also, not much place to sit here, so be prepared to eat inside your car

Pretty decent lobster sandwich, but why a sandwich, why scala bread over the traditional New England lobster roll?   Okay, they want to do it their way...I get it...but I don't know if it's actually better...  it was good and lobster is always good...but I can't say that I'm itching to go back here either...

The great thing that I do like about this place is that it is tucked away in Cambridge and you could easily miss it...and that's kind of a fun thing.  But it's lobster sandwich isn't necessarily worth seeking out...either price wise or taste wise and I guess that is some sort of indictment...

Cutest little shack of a deli.  This is not your proper restaurant because well, they only sell the lobster sandwich and everything else is fresh fish you would buy at the store.  They have cute seatings outside the house!

Now onto the reason why we came here... lobster!  The lobster was a superb quality!  Very fresh and tasty.  Would give this place a 5 but for a dinky sandwich with a bag of chips, it cost me $19 bucks.  Oh, the American standard of food portion.

Someplace in Cambridge with delicious, $13 lobster rolls? Sign me up.
Fresh seafood at wholesale prices (scallops are ~1/2 price vs. Whole Foods)? And I don't have to drive out to the beach? Louie, you are a god.
An owner who will steam fresh, daily catch lobsters for you to take home and eat? Oh Boston, I love you.

Step 1: Grab your wallet and the address (it's not easily found).
Step 2: Go to Alive and Kicking Lobsters and get a lobster roll.

I've never used Alive & Kicking as a grocery store, though it seems lots of people come by for the fresh-off-the-boat lobsters, scallops, and fish, not to mention a variety of seafood soups in their fridge.

Instead, I've now come a number of times for the single thing on their "dine-in" menu - their lobster sandwich. (I think others calling it a "lobster roll" are exaggerating just a bit -- your generous helping of lobster salad comes sandwiched in between two lightly buttered and toasted slices of white bread; not much of a roll, to me.) It's a pretty no-frills experience - your sandwich comes wrapped in foil, looking like it's ready to go into a boxed lunch, and your accompanying potato chips look like they come right off a supermarket shelf - but that's how it should be. They've stuck to the basics, and it's delicious: tons of fresh lobster, not too much mayo, and prepared as you wait. They also offer a nice variety of private label sodas (cream soda, raspberry lime, etc.)

Two things to be aware of: they only have outdoor seating, and twice when a friend and I tried stopping by, they were inexplicably closed. But for a great lobster sandwich, this place can't be beat.

On one of those magical weekends we had in October that felt like July, I had four New Yorkers sleeping in my apartment and one thing they all wanted was a lobster roll. In terms of bang for your buck and quality, this is the place. Yes it's a little tricky to get to, but they serve up these sandwiches fast - and yes, they're more sandwich than roll but honestly that just means you get more lobster than bread and that's really what you're there for, amiright?? Here's a pro-tip from me to you: put a few of your crunchy Cape Cod potato chips in your sandwich and enjoy that salty crunchy creamy buttery lobstery mouthful and lick your fingers, because it will be gone before you know it.

REALLY GOOD (14 dollar) LOBSTER SANDWICH. Shady looking place, but I'm a New Yorker, I'm used to these things. I don't even like lobster and I really enjoyed this. One star off for the guy who charged my order on my DISCOVER card, then suddenly didn't accept DISCOVER from my cousin when she wanted to pay her food about 2 seconds later....weird.

My mom and I are both obsessed with lobster rolls, so when she was in town, I decided we should make the hike to Alive & Kicking Lobsters and get some delicious sandwiches.

I thought they had tables, but it turns out it's only when the weather is nice- they were covered with snow. So we got everything to go and walked back home and ate at home, which wasn't too bad. We bought 2 lobster sandwiches, which came with Cape Cod potato chips. I got a diet coke- I also saw they had some beer for sale- and we got a pack of frozen stuffed clams for later (which were delicious, btw). The shop had tons of live lobsters swimming around, and is in a converted garage, so don't expect anything even close to fancy. They also had some fish and other things that you could buy to take home and cook. While the selection seemed small (to someone who never buys seafood), everything looked good.

The lobster sandwiches come on buttered toast, with tons of lobster in a very light sauce. While it wasn't the best lobster sandwich/roll I've ever had, it's definitely high on my list (and definitely the best in Cambridge). They were also quite cheap, about $13-14 for the lobster sandwich + chips. The staff were super friendly- one even showed us pictures of her dog- and chatted with me and my mom for awhile.

If I lived nearby, I'd probably pick these sandwiches up for dinner way too often!

It's amazing how something so simple can be this good!  We heard about this from a friend and had to come twice to get a sandwich.  The first day we came we came late in the afternoon and just missed the last sandwich (they catch the lobster fresh and seem to serve until they're out of lobster).

Hands down the best sandwich ever, especially if you love seafood.  And, they don't mask the taste of the lobster with too many other ingredients or too much mayo.  Definitely get a cream soda with your sandwich too!

I liked it, but it is very scarce in the winter (just the sandwiches really and some frozen soup and stuffed clams that were really good).  The sandwiches differ from the James Hook.  For one, it's a different mix (not better, not worse, I'd say - light, flavorful, good).  The cost is the same, but it comes on two pieces of wonder bread type bread w/sesame seeds.  The bread is a bit overpowering and their philosophy is more outside the roll, that the bread is better, so they won't change it to a roll.  serving lobster salad on a roll is much better, in my opinion, because the roll is virtually tasteless, allowing you to enjoy the lobster mix.

Also, they get their Lobsters from James Hook :).  If JH was not so far away from Brighton and this weren't so close, I'd always choose JH for their wonderful crab rolls, lobster rolls, lobster and crab bisques, etc.

Also, bought salmon at Alive - good stuff.

My brother lives in SLC and probably has not had lobster for years, so when he came to visit me last weekend, I thought I would bring him here based on all of the positive reviews. We spent a lot of time on the coast of Maine when we were kids, so we were hungry for some nostalgia as well as some yummy lobster.

So, we got there at 5:15 on Monday and it was dark and locked up. I thought maybe they had changed their hours but it said they are open until 6 right next to the door. We were so disappointed! I mean, it was raining, but that doesn't mean that people don't want lobster!

I'm sure it is as good as everyone says, but my brother had to head to VT the next morning to see our parents before he goes back to Utah, so we sadly did not get another chance to try. When I eventually get back over there I will update my review, but in the meantime, don't take their hours for granted!

Off in Cambridge, in a store front set back from the street. This place is really hidden away, tough to find it if you don't know your way around.

It's not the traditional New England style lobster rolls, where its on a buttered hot dog bun. These are lobster sandwiches on toasted sliced bread. Lobster more medium sized slices and a bit heavier on the mayo side. It had it's own style and bottom line is it was good. food fix when you are passing by Cambridge on your way to Brighton/watertown

I just posted the pic of the one I had here last weekend.

Succulent chunks of lobstah on buttery toasted Scali bread washed down with some Raspberry Lime soda (in a glass bottle woO!) & Cape Cod chips. The most generous helping of lobster you will get on a lobster roll/sandwich in all of NewEngland!

This is my new favorite place. so unassuming. I will be here again for lunch this weeK.
