Great place in SF, almost a quintessential SF restaurant. Ate with 3 business associates, and we all had great meals. Seafood very fresh, We were seated promptly for our 7 pm reservations, and wait staff was quite accommodating.
I had chippino as did another friend, can't remember what our 3rd member had. Great sourdough bread accompanying the meal. Great views of surrounding SF area, we could see Golden Gate bridge from our table.
Highly recommend for travelers in the area of Fisherman's Wharf. -

Great food, great service, fantastic view. Call and talk to Scott, Richie or George in advance for a great table. Tell them Scott "Sully" told you to call, they might buy you a dessert.......?
You can't come to San Francisco without going to Alioto's. Enjoy, you WILL be back. -

we picked this place on a whim while trying to escape the rain
had lunch in the upstairs dining room
great experience all around
i had the lunch special meat sauce and pasta, it was really flavorful and had ALOT of meat in it.
my boyfriend had the lunch special sicilian style trout, he said it was pretty good
the service is amazing and im sure the views would have been spectacular if it hadnt been so foggy and rainy out!
i cant wait to go back and try out dinner sometime! -

I love Alioto's! I've been coming here since I was a little girl and have ordered the same thing every single time. Calamari, broiled salmon (I'm a pain and even though it's not on the menu, they always make it for me the way I want it), and creme brulee. It is the perfect meal. They have really good Italian beer and the best customer service in San Francisco!

Alioto's is a genuine part of SF's fisherman's wharf legend. An old skool joint full of cool waiters and great stories of past guests. The lunches are reasonable for the quality. My favorite is the tortellinis and dungeness crab bisque. The bisque is my favorite! Dinners revolve around the fresh crab. The waiters are pros and the view is the star attraction. For a great lunch or memorable dinner, Alioto's is hard to beat.
Validated parking in the lot across the street. -

Best place on the wharf. We had a great late lunch after touring Alcatraz & walking around for most of the day. Ate on the "casual" side of the restaurant right in back of the crab stand. Service was a little slow but it was pretty busy for just the two waitresses. Can't wait to back & eat on the more fancy side with a nice view & review ... Yummm!
Crab Melt - Tasted even better than it looked, super fresh & yummy.
Chicken Alfredo - A little on the greasy side but good.
Fried Shrimp Appetizer - Super good with deeelish dipping sauce
Salads & French Bread - Fresh & nice additions -

The last time I visited Alioto's was in 1999. After reading some of the 1-star reviews, I was a little hesitant in returning but after reading other reviews, I decided "what-da-heck". Glad I did. Tonight, I took my wife & son to Alioto's and had a wonderful dinner. The oyster Rockefeller was delicious. My main course of Linguine w/ Manila clam was spot on (and I'm a carnivore). Lastly, the Cream brûlée w/strawberries was better than my favorite at Ruth Chris. The restaurant atmosphere and views were amazing, laid back, and easy on the eyes. What made it more delightful was our waiter, Tim. He was efficient, on time, courteous, and professional. I highly recommend him. I know the next time my family returns to SF for vacation, we will definitely visit Alioto's and definitely ask for Tim.
P.S. - make a reservation prior, the place was packed by 6:30 pm. -

I was a bit wary to eat here as a man outside was very aggressive to get my mom and I to come in and eat. When we were seated only a party of 6 were in the place. By the time we started our appetizers, the place started filling up around 5pm.
Our waitress was nice & attentive. I liked her accent - from Ireland.
We shared a bowl of clam chowder which was very good! The seafood basket we ordered included calamari, shrimp, scallops, and a piece of fish. The batter was nicely seasoned, just a bit too oily. Also the fries were definitely frozen, it would have been nice to have a fresh larger sized ones for those who like vinegar on them while eating their "fish & chips."
All the seafood was fresh & I definitely recommend this place for the prices, service, view, & quality. -

We met some folks here for dinner last night. While the food wasn't bad, the portions were very small and over priced.
Service was mediocre, view was nice. -

I make it a point to eat one small meal here while I'm in this beautiful city. They have a sauteed clam dish on their appetizer menu.. garlic, wine, parsley. freshly made when you order it. It is always deep in flavors. lots of garlic and white wine.
I've had the chowder in the bread.. but it's not something I order any longer.
I have had one other fish dish.. the fish in the oregano cream sauce.
But now, I just go order one small meal and then move on to the next restaurant, or somewhere for a good Irish Coffee.Listed in: 2012 - 100+ Reviews

The experience does not live up to the hype. Terrible "views". Very stuffy and pretentious. This may have been a high-end place long ago, but now it is just old and run down. Putting the waiters on old-fashioned monkey suits and asking them to be snippy is not enough. (Since when is subbing fresh veggies for tired old mashed potatoes a crime?) Food was ok, but not worth the price.

This place was a very nice place to eat once you make it out of the old elevator that felt more like the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney Land. But it is the oldest restaurant in San Francisco Wharf so I guess a older elevator will do that to you. We were greeted by the host who gave me a table with a view as I requested.
The lunch menu was very reasonable and the portions were very good. For a extra $3.00 they let you add on a appetizer which was great. We both got the fish and chips and agreed it was very good. The view is of the boating docks which wasn't too great but you could see the Golden Gate in the distance so a decent view. We also watched a sea lion play and a little dog and his owner get on a boat. Lots going on but still a very nice dinner. My only advise would be....take the stairs. -

I have been coming to Alioto's for years and years. I have never had bad service, bad food and the views upstairs are wonderful.
You must get the shrimp in ceramic pots. Cooked in garlic and butter what's not to like? Be sure to have bread on hand so you can dip the tasty sourdough in the pot after you've devoured your shrimp. Yum Yum Yummmmmmy!
The seafood Sausage is my second favorite thing on the menu after the shrimp. Who wouldn't love shrimp, scallops and prawns cooked to perfection and accompanied with a tasty tomato caper sauce. Heaven!!!
It's at the wharf so you expect there to be tourists and there are. But be a smart local and eat where the food is great, the service is impeccable and the views are lovely! -

Terrible service, mediocre food, and way overpriced. Big disappointment. They evidently don't even offer a kids menu at dinner but they do at lunch. The waiter was snooty, and for $22.95 I expected more than 6 shrimp in the Sauteed Shrimp entree! 2 modest entrees and one plate of fish & chips for the kids to share plus two glasses of wine shouldn't cost $100. We will not be going back.

Alioto's is the oldest of the Fisherman's Wharf restaurants and continues to serve good food. The third floor dining room is fairly small, with a number of comfy booths and most tables have a great view looking to the GG Bridge. It's actually quiet enough to have a decent conversation.
We had attentive service. The food was good (fresh crab, delicious salad with excellent blue cheese dressing, perfectly cooked French fries, and wonderful sourdough bread). It's a little pricey, but the meal and service were both good.
(Tab for two for lunch--no wine or desserts--$55.) -

Better have your hotel concierge make you a reservation... this place is BUSY!
Good appetizers.. some unique offerings not found on other menus...
Best was the sourdough bread with butter... naturally....
Best of the entree's was the seafood Risotto... one of the best I have ever had.. the shrimp was ok... the lobster was decent, but way over priced...
Phenomenal view of the bay! -
Review from Joel C.
So I thought about taking my family to a seafood restaurant at Fisherman's Wharf and have them try some SF favorites like clam chowder and dungeness crab. I should have relied on my instincts and try the street food since 1. it looked delicious and 2. it was heck of a lot cheaper than the food at Alioto's.
First, I thought the restaurant was a bit too stuffy for what it is. The booths and tables were really small and I could not understand why the place was packed. The bathrooms were also at an odd location, being placed on the 2nd floor of the restaurant. Thank goodness the the main restaurant floor smelled decent unlike floor 1 and 2 which smelled like fish.
We got out table quickly, thanks to reservations (which I highly recommend if you want to eat here). We ordered two calamari appetizers to start off with and my mom could not help but say how much she thought Catch in Castro was already so much better than this. I could not help but agree. For entrees, my sister and I bought got clam chowder in bread bowls and decided to split the dungeness crab sandwich. My brother got the same sandwich while my mom got the Shrimp Roll and dad got the bisque. It took awhile for everything to arrive to the table and once it did, we were pretty underwhelmed. Portions were small and the sandwiches looked like it was cole slaw between the buns. The chowder was very bland and I had to add a lot of salt and pepper in it to get it somewhat edible.
I don't recommend eating at Alioto's....maybe if you get one of the full course main dishes it would be better, but for lunch at over $100 for 5 people...it's pretty ridiculous. -

I am actually gonna go 4.5 stars, and round up to 5 stars. I am a local and I also keep coming back to Alioto's because it's been rock solid every time. Yes it's a designed to attract tourists in a tourist trap part of town. But they don't act like douchebags about it. The staff is sharply dressed, and act eager and professional like a 5 star or Michelin rated restaurant, the linens and silverware likewise signalling an expensive meal.
Yet our lunch today for four with a couple deserts cost $100 for four people... damn reasonable. My Sicilian Fish Stew was incredible. The clam chowder was a 4 on a scale of 5. My sisters Sicilian Trout she loved and mom's scallops demolished to the last bite. The iced tea was like the most flavourful I've ever sipped... very enjoyable.
Everytime I come here it's always a solid meal. Why do I go 5 stars... our waiter was incredible, I mean just perfect, hovering just the right amount to make sure our every need was addressed.
We got a table for four immediately upon showing up at 1:15pm, with a decent harbor and Golden Gate view. We were the last open table though.
So if you have guests in from out of town, you can take them to one of many excellent restaurants, if you know of them in SF. Or you can take them to this fun, consistently tasty quality restaurant, with great service, at a good price.
p.s. the only nit I could make, and it's the ONLY nit... would be the coffee. They could stand to upgrade the coffee selection. That's why I say 4.5 stars. -

DO NOT EAT HERE!!!! The food is MEDIOCRE!!! Do not come here. I wish I could give this place zero stars. It was awful. Please don't eat here. You will be so disappointed if you eat here. It sucks. It sucks so bad.. You are better off eating at the fast food seafood stands that are along the pier. The wait staff is great and very nice but the food is atrocious. If you want to break up with someone, and punish them at the same time, take them to this restaurant.

Took a friend here for his birthday for his first experience with crab of any sort. Solid Dungeness. Loved the garlic... We split both the Clam chowder and the Lobster Bisque. Prefer the bisque myself but the flavors of both were excellent. Left stuffed so if you're ordering know portions are on the large side. VIew was OK. Fransiscan has the better of the two.

Our family decided to eat at Alioto's casual dining restaurant because we heard how Michael Savage says the original restaurant upstairs is his favorite. Big mistake! The worst! I ordered a simple shrimp salad sandwich. It was served on stale egg bread. Yuck! I never heard of a shrimp or crab salad sandwich in San Francisco not served on a sour dough bagette. To make matters worse, the clam chowder was bland and thin! My father in law's Fisherman's basket was so greasy he could not finish it.
I know someone might say the casual dining restaurant is different from the upscale restaurant. However, if it has the same name, it should have the same quality! So I guess I will take Michael Savage (Weiner's) restaurant advice as serious as I take his radio personae....NOT! -
Review from Hollie W.
What is a vegan doing in a seafood restaurant..............well members of my group came for the clam chowder of course!
Super busy place because all of the restaurants in the area were insanely busy at the time. With that being said the staff looked stressed, worn out, and burnt out. So a couple of clam chowder bread bowls, fish and chips, shrimp pesto, and vegetable penne pasta with red wine later the experience was probably enhanced because of our view of the dock. I have to give the place props for offering a vegan friendly meal so "PROPS"
Food was good, view was great, company awesome, service semi-ok, and cost a bit pricey. There were some street like vendors right next to the restaurant that you can probably get cheaper food at as im pretty sure part of the high cost is the atmosphere and view. I really enjoyed my meal and wine but it was expensive for pasta, vegetables, and wine. My guess is that if you are coming for good seafood any one of the places on the Wharf is probably acceptable. -

A Sunday dinner trip to SF Fisherman's Wharf area with the goal of Lobster Thermidor on the menu, family & myself find our way to Alioto's, only after initial attempt at Scoma's failed to due a 1.5hr-2hr wait for a party of 4. Thank goodness Alioto's was only approx a 30min wait! http://www.yelp.com/bi...
RESTAURANT: Go up approx 3 flight of stairs (bthrms on 2nd floor) to dinning area, or take elevator. Small bar area, but there's a bar! Large open windows on both sides of dinning room; lots of natural light to come in & great views no mater where you sit. Table cloth setting, large booths (could seat up to 8ppl), & tables with armless chairs. More so an adult crowd; not a real baby/kid environment, but do as you please ;-)
SERVICE: Once you walk through a crowd of ppl standing & waiting to be seated, find host/hostess booth to the right to get your name on the list. Friendly hello & advisory of wait. Our waiter-John was friendly, helpful, & efficient throughout dinning experience.
EATS: Overall food was fresh, hot, & delish.
$6.75 Cup of New England Clam Chowder http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Fresh ground pepper by our waiter-John. Chowder was good.
$18.75 Trout Stuffed with Bay Shrimp & Mushrooms (wrapped w/ bacon & roasted lemon butter sauce) http://www.yelp.com/bi...
BF's mom enjoyed this although she couldn't tolerate the head of the fish. I GLADLY took the head off her plate tho!
$48 Whole Main Lobster Thermidor (oven baked in its shell w/ mushrooms, sherry wine, & glazed w/ Hollandaise sauce) http://www.yelp.com/bi...
BF's dad said it was good, but good thing he loves mushrooms...felt more mushrooms than lobster.
Sides to Lobster Thermidor http://www.yelp.com/bi...
$20.25 Prawns Dore (caper sauce served w/ fried rice) http://www.yelp.com/bi...
BF enjoyed this entree, but half-way or almost done with the plate we questioned did they substitute the rice for fries? Cuz he was dippin' into my rice a lil' too often. Great batter on the prawns!
$28.75 Wild Swordfish Involtuni (crabmeat wrapped in swordfish served w/ diced tomatoes & lemon butter caper sauce) http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Yes, I'd order this dish again! Fresh, hot, & scrum-didly-umptous! Great pieces of crabmeat & swordfish with every bite. Cooked VERY nicely.
FINAL TAB: So for 4ppl total spending came to $169.75 http://www.yelp.com/bi... The one thing to be aware of that's on the bottom of the menu is "A 4% service charge will be added to all food/bevs for SF Health Ordinance" which was $6.01 added to our subtotal. Overall a wonderful experience & gets my recommendation. -
Review from Ceci Z.
Picked this restaurant out of the chain of choices along the harbor because I thought they had the nicest entrance and well dressed waiters. We got a table at the top level, beside the windows but was facing inward toward the street. The place was pretty busy at lunch time, it took a long time for our foods to arrive. Like what some of the other reviews mentioned, the service is not very good. Our waiter was nice, but had an attitude on him. Whenever we questioned him, he responded with annoyance and a bit of rudeness. For example, when we asked to double check our orders we were just asking for updates, but it seemed like he thought we were complaining and started to blame us for what's happening.
Foods here are on the pricey side. I ordered from the lunch special menu where you can add a cup of chowder for $3 extra. There are complimentary sourdough bread on the house so it's basically a chowder bowl a la carte. For the entree I had the bay shrimp salad. It was nice for them to have the dressing on the side. The shrimps are tiny, but there are lots of them. They are quite fresh and tasty. It is a nice dish but I felt it was not quite worth the price. -

My sister, best friend and I went to explore the fisherman wharf restaurants and decided to go to Alioto's. We loved the big neon sign and the atmosphere brought us a lot of joy. Seating was good, view was beautiful, the food was pretty good, UNTILL I got my $40 lobster. It was GROSS. I only ate about a third before I was completely disgusted. When the $200.00 bill came I told the waitress, MONIQUE, politely that I did not enjoy my Lobster, and she asked if I put lemon and butter on it, which wasn't the point and I said yes, she laughed and said "sorry" and charged us for the meal.
I don't know. If it was me or anyone with common cutesy, I would have apologized and offered to take it off the bill or offered a free shrimp cocktail, she's not losing any money. It was rude and pretty much ruined the dinner experience. I would never go back just because the way she treated me... -

So, we were just walking through the Wharf, and hungry and decided to walk in and see what Aliotos had to offer. The place has charm I'll give it that. There are pictures of the restaurant and Mr. Alioto going back 60 years, and the old style decor is still present, but works.
The problem is the food. Honestly it was some of the worst fish I've ever had. I had the rock fish. If was fried, very bland and very small. It was served with what had to be bulk, previously frozen french fries. They were aweful. My girlfriend had the fish and chips. The fish inside was ok but the batter was gross and mushy and the fries again, bulk frozen.
We were never asked if we wanted anything but water to drink, which was weird. We didnt notice until the food had arrived, at which point we were over it.
Prices were low if I remember right, around $10-$15 dollars a plate, not even worth that IMO.
The location is nice, they just need some better cooks and better ingredients. -

Although this is a touristy place, I am a local guy and keep coming back there. Love the food, love the service and great great views. Ask to seat next to the window and you're all set. Baran is a great host and a great knowledgeable guy. Know this guy for years and never been disappointed with service.
Good job!! -

Fun place for dinner while visiting the Wharf. The restaurant was extremely crowded and therefore noisy, but it had great views of the water. The staff was friendly, but it did take some time to be greatest at the door. I thought the food was ok - but I was visiting from Baltimore which is known for seafood, so I can be a bit of a snob. This place is pricey but they post menus out front so you can decide if it's a good fit prior to being seated. Would I go back? Probably not, but it wasn't terrible.

If visiting Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco then one must try the seafood. This is a great spot with a great view of the waters. A tad pricey, but it sets up as fancier than its neighbors. But the fried calamari alone is worth the trip.

My cousin from NY came to visit, so of course I had to make him try some the city's famous bread-bowl clam chowder. I myself ordered a plate of calamari($12) and in addition, he ordered shrimp and crab. The calamari was okay, nothing special. However, it was a very generous portion and I ended up finishing only half of it. Then later, my cousin (17) was able to buy me a glass of the table(I'm 20) by explaining that he'd just returned from the Philippines and didn't have an ID. It was absolutely horrible, tasted like drinking pomegranate-lime juice. Customer service was tops though, the waiter was very nice, and frequently came by to check on us. Overall, not really worth the extra penny, but I doubt you'll find a bread bowl of clam chowder for less than $7.50 anywhere in San Francisco. Great waterfront view and location, though.

Not sure why there are so many one stars, but I have been here a couple times, and everytime I have came for lunch, a tad pricey. But their clam chowder in a bread bowl was very good and tasty. Also there bread and butter.
Some of the waiters are attractive though....
Their was no wait when I came and the waiters were attentive, we sat outside and it was a nice view of the pier, everyone strolling by.
I guess downside was you would have to go up 3 flights of stairs to use the restroom.
& I would come back. -

MOST EXPENSIVE LUNCH I HAVE EVER HAD. At 73 dollars, I could have eating 2 lobsters for the measly amount of crab, clams and midget scallops they served us. Should have stayed downstairs in the streets.
The 50 dollars not worth the food definitely went to the fanciness of the ocean view and the waiter with an accent... Whoever chose the tacky dining ware should be fired because it definitely threw it all off.
Best part was the bread and butter. -

Let me start off by saying that I didn't even get a chance to eat here so my review is solely based on service.
After a long day of free wining and dining, my boyfriend and I were hungry for some fried shrimp and clam chowder. Being that it was 10:30 on a Sunday, there were very few places that were still open. I chose Alioto's out of all the other restaurants because it was advertised as "fine dining." I say "hah!" to THAT statement. We had to walk up three flights of stairs before we entered the "restaurant." The host at the podium was talking on the phone so he just waved some waiter over to seat us. We were seated quickly at a corner table and served water and bread right away. However, after sitting around for over 20 minutes and moving our heads around to try and get a waiter's attention, no one came by to serve us. So... we left.
I do not consider this place to be a fine dining restaurant at all. I received better service at Joe's Crab Shack across the street. When no waiter comes by your table to even SEE how you're doing or to mention any of the specials, I take it as a sign to take my money elsewhere. -

we ate at the crabstand outside of aliotos. the crab was not terrific - no seasoning. when someone next to me asked whether the shrimp was fresh, the guy serving smiled and said no. the peal and est shrimp tasted off; something was not right; the clam chowder was not special; it tasted like it was canned. what was odd about the clam chowder was that the claims were diced into long rectangle shapes and they did not taste like claims.
i guess if you eat at a crab stand, you expect something authentic and special. i got an upset stomach later and got sick; i suspected it was their food. but the food sure left a bad taste in my mouth. 30 dollars - eat the homemade ice cream down the street instead. -

More tourist trap. Had some sandwich take out and though they look like packed with crab meat, but once you bite you notice the majority is bread...boring bread.
Only good part was the shrimp fry, that was good.
But for god sake, can't they make own tartar sauce!? I got bunch of tiny tartar packages instead, that screams cutting corner.
Go to white castle and your wallet will thank you.
