Loved it. Very simple. You walk in, grab a saw, and walk through the trees they have growing there. They aren't like the trees you'll see at a tree lot (although they have those) since this is California and most of those come from Oregon and Washington. You find the tree you want, cut it down, pay and go. They'll help you load it on your car. When said and done I paid around $55 for a pretty huge tree.

The only draw back were the bugs. Since the tree went from alive in the great outdoors to my living room in about 15 minutes, I brought home a colony of ants and spiders. But the smell was amazing and lasted all of December.

Enjoy it! It's the stuff Christmas memories are made of.

This is the first year I've cut down my own tree and experiencing it with some family (especially kids) makes it all the greater to enjoy. Great selection of trees. We bounced back and forth between many options. They're so fresh. I'm used to the pines being stiff and stabbing my arms when carrying home but these were more like running your fingers over the bristles of a new paintbrush. The farm has a good number of goats, alpacas, horses, and of course dogs.  Be a genius like me and get shocked by the electric fence. Another great moment for the kids.  The price is what you'll pay for a tree you don't cut. I overheard some say it should be cheaper, but you are paying for the experience. I say if you're gonna pay the same either way ya might we well get more bang for your buck.  I also heard people say they couldn't find the perfect tree. Clearly they're looking for the tree that saps winning lottery numbers because there is no way you couldn't find the perfect one. All shapes and sizes are available. The only valid drawback I'd say is that your tree will have plenty of take home spiders.  I see it, though, as multiple opportunities to rescue the girlfriend over the most wonderful time of the year. Boys, this is your time to shine!

Went this year to try a cut-your-own experience and was very disappointed - the cut-your-own selection was anemic, and the pre-cut selection was the same as any in the East Bay. We ended up driving back to our place and going to a Delancy Street lot. Maybe there are other cut-your-owns out there that we should try, but from now on I think we'll be going pre-cut, in our neighborhood.

I was very excited this year about cutting down our own Christmas and as luck would have it there happened to be a place just a few miles from home in Martinez. The staff is friendly and helpful and they provide not only a cart and saw for your use but they had a pretty decent selection of trees. My sister ended finding  a precut tree she liked but all in all the experience was great. My husband who hails from Petaluma says the tree farm up there is better. I have nothing to compare with but I thought this one was okay.

This place is great. It's just far enough away from the cities that it feels a little country, it's a great setting, it's got easy parking, the people there are super nice, and you can either cut your own from their farm or get one of their delivered pre-cut trees that come from WA and OR. I think all they're prices are about average but they vary a little from year to year. They don't have many, if any, Noble firs on their farm so if you want one of those you pretty much have to get a pre-cut. But if you like what they've got on their farm, they have the hand saws to cut the trees, and carts to bring them back to the wrapping area. They'll trim the base and wrap it in netting so it's easier to transport. They've also got lovely wreaths for sale and free coffee. We've gotten our trees here four years in a row and we love going there.

Our family has been buying our tree at Alhambra Valley Tree farm for probably close to 40 years.  When we were kids and living in Walnut Creek, my father liked to cut our own tree, and after checking out places in Napa and further away, he discovered the Alhambra Valley Tree farm.  After that, we went every year and cut our own.  The tradition stuck, and after going back East for school I returned to the Bay Area with my husband and we have been getting our tree there ever since (we're now in our mid-50's).   Our sons love the place, too.  It is well worth the drive out from San Francisco or the East Bay.   As others have mentioned, the Tree Farm is far enough off the beaten track to feel a bit like "country".  They do still have "cut your own trees", but stopped growing them on their level lot years ago and now only grow them in a smaller area on a hillside.  The types of evergreen trees that will grow in our warmer local climate (like the Monterrey Pine) are somewhat limited.  A while ago we decided we now prefer Noble Firs and other types that only grow in much colder climates ... and fortunately, the Alhambra Valley Tree farm started carrying precut trees as well, and they have a very nice selection of them.  The staff  (in the past, a lot of family members and college kids home for break ...) are very very nice and helpful and friendly.  If they don't have a tree on display that you like (and I am EXTREMELY picky, I will admit) they will pull others out of their storage area, open them, and hold them for you to admire until you find one you truly love.   The place has a very festive atmosphere; many of the folks shopping there have similarly been coming for years and years.  We've occasionally tried other lots  (when forced to do so because of our kids' fundraisers etc) and always been disappointed ...but Alhambra Valley Tree farm has always been great.
