Fran kicks ass.
I combed this city for a place to get a decent haircut and failed miserably, that was until I met Fran. He does his thing, goes to town and is relatively cheerful and easy to talk to. I honestly have nothing bad to say about the place.
My cut is $45 (rolling with the shaved head at the moment, but i'll be back) but I get a month of feeling good. For me, it's worth it.
If you're looking for someplace new and finding it a painful process thus far, check these guys out and see if they work for you.
Friendly and professional --- badass.
they did a fantastic job on my husband's hair the day before our wedding, and that's enough to get a five-star rating from me. :)
I went to Alfred's for the first time last week and it was great :-) Actually, I am not really a "new" customer. My stylist, Alex, used to work across the street at Diego. But, she defected and went to Alfred. Since I love her so much, I went too. This was my first appointment there with her and I was very satisfied!
Alex is an amazingly talented, personable, outgoing, meticulous hairstylist. She provides an honest consultation, and works quickly, but does not rush you through your appointment. I felt SO bad because I was about 20 minutes late for my appointment, and she had someone right after me, but she didn't rush me at all. She took her time with her, and we chatted it up. She is SUPER happy at Alfred and happy stylists = happy hair!!
The actual salon is a converted apartment. It does not have the "buzz" of Diego. It was a little quieter, but also quite cozy. I really enjoyed my experience there and will definitely be returning. Her price is incredibly reasonable and fair considering the quality of her work. I highly recommend her (or any of the stylists there for that matter!)
Was there again today and noticed they didn't have any pictures on Yelp, so I took some and post them. Haircut was great, as always.

I completely agree with Joanne B. I work in Harvard Square and I've tried pretty much all the… Read more »
I was in town for a conference and badly in need, not only of a haircut, but a new style. I walked in without an appointment and was promptly assisted by Chris. The entire experience as well as the haircut were A+! Away from the pretentiousness of that can be Harvard, I was happy to walk in to an extremely friendly and welcoming environment. Additionally, Chris gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had. And on top of that, he was friendly, gave me tips on what I should go and see, was not quiet in the least bit, nor did he seem to just make conversation for conversation's sake.
I'd recommend Chris for anyone, but particularly for men who are looking for a stylish cut that is not too metrosexual and out of this world, i.e. begging for attention.
Haircuts run around $45.
Thomas and Alfred are hard working devoted professionals with lots of experience and I recommend this place if you are new or unhappy with your current hairdressors. Or, you can prove that being in the top ivy-league school and being stylish can happen here. And, if you appreciate styles, not just the street trends, you are in the right place.
And, it is funny to listen to these two guys slapping back and forth with each other. You will love them both.
I just went there last night for the first time and was extremely impressed. Fran did my hair - he's a super nice guy with a professional demeanor and raw eye for detail.
He cut my hair first, to take care of the length, then partial-foil-highlighted and finally cut it with grace. I'm pretty stoked about my new do. It's much shorter than I had before - due to his suggestion - but healthier looking. Most important, though, is the new color. He softened the color a lot. I had some very gold/brassy highlights before that he actually darkened to blend much more subtlely with my natural color.
I feel like a new lady and am so glad I took the opportunity to find someone new!
Alfred's is wonderful! I went to Marie (sweet Irish girl) today for the second time and I had a great experience. I've received so many compliments on my new cut today, I'm delighted! I love the atmosphere in Alfreds! Everything about the experience was so pleasant!
Love Alfred Salon, and love Fran, my old stylist. He's the best I found in the Boston area, but sadly I just moved to DC so I can't go to him anymore. After telling stylists for years and years that I am super low-maintenance and don't know how to do anything other than blow-dry my hair, Fran actually listened and gave me a cut that looked amazing for months and a look that I could recreate just by blow drying and brushing. I also have to say that the vibe in here is great. I hate the drama you get at most salons, but the stylists here really seem to like each other and it creates a terrific atmosphere.
