Lunch menu good prices. Ordered three soft tacos ala Carter and the lunch tostada. Both chicken. They were very good. Home made tortillas. We were driving through on our way from San Jose to Marina and made a pitstop in Castroville. Glad we did.

My friend bought a house in Castroville, and we were looking for a nearby place to eat... We happened to walk into Alfonso's...
And what a great surprise!
The food is delicious, the chips were fresh, the beer was really cold.
Everything perfect.
Since then, somedays at work, when I am hungry, I always think about that food: thinly sliced tender beef, covered with sauteed onions, rice and beans. Just like my mom's. Yuhmmmm!
Worth the drive!
I highly recommend. Simple and tasty. -

Went here with my girlfriend and her father while passing through Castroville on our way to Monterey, looking for a taqueria. This was the perfect little place.
We got a window seat right away, were served quickly, and the food was pretty good. I ordered a chile relleno dish that was about $6, and it wasn't a blandly flavored one either -- it had its kick! I'd say that tells you how authentic a place's Mexican food is: the chile relleno has to actually be spicy.
In retrospect, I wish I'd also tried something with the artichoke, since that's what Castroville's known for, and we were right across the street from the Giant Artichoke Restaurant. There was even a specials menu at the door as well, advertising things like various fish tacos. Nonetheless, everything I had was top notch and affordable, from the chips & salsa onward. Worth a second visit. -

Alfonso's has a nice friendly atmosphere and staff and the portions are big so you get what you pay for. Everything I've had here hasn't been that spicy. I don't recommend ordering iced tea, as it tastes like old coffee. Maybe it was old coffee. Kinda gross!

Came here with the pals. The food was well prepared, but not spectacular. Skip the deep fried artichoke hearts. The artichoke enchiladas were interesting, but I can't say that I'd order them again.

Mmmm, artichoke enchiladas. Alfonso's Authentic Mexican Food is right off the freeway, and possibly the best artichoke-involved Mexican food I have ever had, complete with authentic super-depressing strip mall surroundings. Perfect pit-stop when you're stuck in traffic coming back from Big Sur or Monterey.
