Chocalate cannoli cake filling. That's all I have to say. Growing up on Staten Island my parents would reward us for good grades with Alfonso's. If we were really lucky my Dad would come home with a box of Alfonso's cookies and couple cannoli's on the side.

So, this weekend when I was asked to bring the cake for my friend's bridal shower I jumped at the chance to spoil myself, erm, treat the party guests to an awesome cake: chocolate butter cream with raspberry and chocolate cannoli filling. Heaven on a plate I tell you.

I adore the red velvet cupcakes at Alfonso's. The cake is a denser than normal cupcakes in the city (I think it's because Italian cakes are heavier?) but has good flavor and the frosting is a slightly tart cream cheese. My bf loves the rainbow cookies here. Also the girls behind the counters are always very sweet. Affordable and delicious!

Alfonso's continues to provide excellent pastry.

Visited my great aunt in Staten Island last weekend, providing a perfect excuse to hit Alfonso's for loaves of bread, cookies, conolli and lobster tails.  When I walked in her house with the bags from the store she even said, "Pastry from Alfonso's.  It must be a special occasion."

Again, walking up the walkway bordered by the bushes reminds me of EASY MONEY, with Rodney Dangerfield and Joe Pesci knocking the black-clad old ladies into the shrubs.  Next time you go over to Staten Island, which is like going to Brooklyn and having to pay a cover charge, hit up Alfonso's.

Alphonso's does the Italian classics to perfection --cannolis (large and miniature), pastries, fruit tarts, tri-color cookies, butter cookies of all kinds, olive breads, meat breads, and their danishes, croissants and cakes are yum, yum, yum.  One more thing, their butter cream icing on anything is unsurpassed. I absolutely love this place and always come home with way more than I planned on.  Please Food Network and TLC stay away, this is one of Staten Island's secret gems.  One more thing, I swear my grandmother lived to be 96 because every time I visited her I bought a small box of their petit fours and peach melbas.  So maybe the secret to long life is lies within those walls,

    STILL awful:

i was contacted today and asked to remove my review (copy and pasted this from the email) :

I know this was a terrible situation. The only side of a story you heard as the vendor, being there out of business and your family was compensated please remove the comment as the signed an affidavit for release in court.
Thank You Alfonso' s pastry Shoppe

I responded quite rudely as this is an outright lie- Alfonso's is still in business, i did not sign and affidavit therefore do not have to keep quiet about anything,  AND my friends only received compensation AFTER dragging them to court........... and i think the worst offense: the misspelling of the word "THEY'RE" ... THERE is a place - geez, get is straight!

after writing my VERY rude email back, the response was "I'm sorry for the misunderstanding but I believe the previous message was sent by yelp because Alphonso's is no longer listed on yelp." which isn't true - still listed... i checked, and checked their website - still running... and yelp doesn't send those messages, and it was sent from Jerry R.... not yelp.... way to try to lie... but unfortunately, it says "FROM JERRY R." at the top of the email......

don't do business with these people, in this economy there are hard working deserving places that deserve your business that will not treat customers so poorly.

I believe that this is the best bakery in Staten Island. I went in there to day at around 4 on a Saturday, so I was worried that I would not have a good selection or that they would not be fresh. When I got there, I not only had a great selection of pastries, but they were also fresh.

They have a big selection of pastries. You can either get the small ones, which were 1.25 a piece or the big ones. I chose 8 pieces of the small ones (if you get a dozen, it will cost you 15 bucks). The girl that was helping me was very nice and helpful and patient (definitely not the attitude you get in dunkin donut these days).

They also have a good selection of cupcakes including red velvet. The also have butter cookies and rainbow cookies, fresh bread, and chocolate covered pretzels. They also have a good selection of cakes but some of those will run you around 22 bucks.

Also they do not have their own parking so I parked in the CVS parking lot.

This is probably one of the most popular bakeries in Staten Island.  The owners are Italian.  This place is very busy especially on weekend mornings.  Their specialty is more cakes and cookies and some of their items are good, but it really does not justify the high prices.  There is really nothing that would make me take a special visit there unless I lived in the neighborhood.

Say it aint so! Just saw on NY1 that they have been shut down by the board of health until they correct violations including evidence of mice!
Love this place but that is gross.

the most delicious bakery on the island.  seriously.  It is sort of expensive and the service comes from self-absorbed high school girls, but hey, taste the rainbow cookies and everything will be right with the world.
the meat bread is awesome, by the way. try the meat bread!  sometimes they have samples of things on the counter.  mmmm, samples are delicious.
I also love the petit fleurs and the pignolia cookies.  in smells like heaven in there!

never tried anything else but the cheesecakes and cakes BUT
the thing that has me coming back here is this chocolate pudding cake.

    yes. the chocolate pudding cake.

layers upon layers of chocolate with the inside frosting layer is a hidden layer of chocolate pudding.

    it's an absolute mouthgasm.

although the customer service is lacking (courtesy of staten island high school girls who simply don't care about pastries) just a bite of this cake makes me forget that i live in suburban hell and that life can be beautiful...

I ordered a cake for my mothers birthday from here and LOOOVED it.  Up there with some of the best cakes I've had. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a bakery. However, my one gripe is that after arranging for delivery of the cake on my mothers birthday they...ummm...forgot an I had to call and find out where the cake is only to find out that the delivery person wasn't in that day. Regardless I needed my cake delivered and they apologized and got it to me right away. I still believe this was just an honest mistake and wouldn't stop people from coming here but it does show how they possessthat famous Staten island service and attitude

You can find all kinds of delicious pastries and cakes at this italian bakery.  Every year, I order their strawberry cheesecake for my dad's birthday.  During the spring and summer time, you can also sit outside and enjoy a cafe or capaccino.

This is the greatest bakery we have on the island. Prices are competitive, but def worth it. The cakes and pasteries are the best I ve had. My only issue with it, is that I live on the south shore of Staten Island and I have to go all the way to the "original" Alfonsos on Victory blvd because thats where all the baked goods are made and THEN shipped out to the other SI Alfonso locations because at the other locations, the food is always stale. I ve been to both other locations closer to my house, and the cookies are always stale. Sad.

I grew up on these pastries. Every single Birthday cake since I was in diapers has been from here. They make delicious cakes, cookies, and brownie cakes. Probably the tastiest Italian bread as well. Not a fan of their cheesecake though as it has an extremely heavy ,muddy consistency. I like my cheesecake lighter. Also, their seven layer cookies aren't the greatest.. On a whole though, a great pastry shop.
