What a guy! I've never met any body who cared more about how satisfied his customers are. He's a great leader (he probably won't be your main worker, he has minions) but he is very good at getting the job done.
We came up with the bathroom design we wanted and he was the guy to get the tile on the wall. Multiple times I called him with issues and he was over at our house in a jiffy. Like I said, he really cares, nothing is too much to ask for from this guy. He had tons of great advice with the rest of our bathroom and his guys did great work, always kept the place clean and they did it all for a great price.
One piece of advice that we wish we had is to use his plumber for the job if you have to redo any plumbing. It's key that the 2 guys work well and communicate with eachother. It will cost you a day here and a day there to wait for you to get on the other guys calendar. If the tile guy and the plumber actually speak to eachother, you can get 3 days of work done in 1.
Get this guy in to bid your tile project, you will be very happy you did. I would easily do it again. -

We hired Alex for our Bathroom modeling. His team did a good job in the tile layout, grout choosing, all the fixtures changing, toilets changing, vanity top/cabinet changing and they even helped us shorten one of our closet door. Also, Alex's cost is very reasonable. We all like Alex.

Alex was friendly, punctual, and made an effort to accommodate our schedule. He originally estimated 2-3 days for the job, but his guy was able to complete our glass tile kitchen backsplash installation in 1 day (working from 8:30AM-8:30PM). He even made sure to check on his worker several times during the day. His quote was definitely competetive in SF (we got quotes from 6 other contractors).
Pros:
- showed up on time for estimate and accommodated my schedule
- gave lots of suggestions
- listened to my input on how the job should be done
- put together a sample of how the backsplash was going to be grouted using some of my spare tile
- showed up to the job on time
- finished the job ahead of schedule
- good finished result
- clean and neat (as much as a messy job can be)
- courteous easy to work with
- flexible payment arrangement -

I needed someone to re-tile our bathroom in our rental house and based on these Yelp reviews, I gave Alex a call. He came right away, give us a quote (his prices were very reasonable). He came by on a Saturday by himself to demolish the existing bathroom. We bought all the tile and grout ourselves based on the amount he told us to buy, though he could have done it for us as well if we gave him a sample. During the demolition, he was concerned about our very old plumbing and called us to see if we could get a plumber to look at it. He said any plumber would be fine -- also had a number of a plumber he knows, but certainly did not push us to use him at all. He finished demolishing on a Saturday and sent out one of his guys to do the tiling on Monday (while going in and checking on the work). Original estimate - 3 days, but it took 1 day to demo and 1 day to tile.
One thing to note - and Alex will tell you this - he is NOT a designer. People often ask him his opinion on what tile looks good, or what grout looks good and he warns them "I do tiles. Not design." So if you just need someone to execute on your own fabulous designs, call Alex.
UPDATE: I had to update this and take out a star -- I only give 5 if the work was perfect or pretty close to it. Unfortunately one important thing was missed by Alex's worker and Alex didn't catch it. Alex however was great about coming right away to fix the problem himself and overall I still really like him and would hire him again. -

I couldn't be happier with Alex's work.
We retiled around the mantles of 2 fireplaces with Alex, which sounds simple, but was actually a Herculean task for the following reasons:
1. I needed the job done immediately (I was about to leave the country)
2. I literally had exactly the # of tiles needed for the job, because like the impatient cheap case with a taste for design that I am, I bought all my tile from Heath Ceramics 2nds, and they didn't have any more tiles. So Alex had no margin for error.
But Alex pulled it off, and at a very reasonable price. My mantels look like a million bucks (no one will know my secret). When the time comes to tile my back splash, I know who to go to. -

I found Alex's Custom Tiles on Yelp as I looked to replace my bathroom floor tiles and regrout the shower.
I called him to set up a time to check out the job and give me a quote.
He was prompt and called on his way.
His quote was equal to the first quote I got from The Grout Doctor.
He finished the job one day ahead of schedule.
The results were great.
Alex is communicative, accessible, and does good work. -

Alex and his help is TERRIFIC!! I got 3 quotes but Alex gave me the best price for doing my kitchen back splash with glass tiles. The work was excellent and it turned out exactly the way I envisioned it. I would definitely use him again in future projects.

Alex gave us a competitive estimate for the work we wanted done, and followed through by completing our bathroom renovation exactly as we asked him to. His work was professional, he completed the job quickly and he has guaranteed his work.
He also has a friendly demeanor and is easy to get along with. I would recommend Alex highly for tile work. -

I'll certainly echo the good things people said about Alex and his crew - very nice, punctual, hard-working, and at a great rate. We're really pleased with the finished product and will use him again.
NOTE: Take time to consider if there are items or finishes in the workspace that need extra care and then be available to supervise the prep or leave explicit reminder notes that something needs to be covered, taped-off, etc. -

Dude, this guy couldn't be nicer, seriously decent prices, and honest as all get-up. Alex came over in the evening to give us a quote, spending time with us to figure out our options. Very accommodating, even told us to give him a call if we decided to do the work ourselves and had questions about products and how-to. Highly recommend.

Alex and Valentine just finished tiling both of our bathroom floors, behind the tub and behind the sink. The work is absolutely beautiful. The design I had chosen was somewhat complicated with small mosaic tiles and other tiles of different depths. They made the tiles work together perfectly. They came when they said they would and were very good about communication.

I forgot to update this when it happened, but looking at our walls reminded me. Alex had mentioned that if we needed help patching up these couple of little spots on our kitchen wall, he'd be happy to come lend a hand. Well, true to his word, he called one day and offered to come by. He went up on the ladder, scraped a little, patched a little, and voile! It was ready for the fun retro turquoise paint job the Mr and I were gearing up toward! He would take no money for the work. Amazing! People like this really do exist! Alex rocks!

Alex ROCKS! we made the mistake of hiring a friend to tile our kitchen and bathroom. the friend created a disaster. alex came out and gave us several options for how to fix it - ranging from super cheap to redoing the entire thing. we ultimately decided to redo the entire thing and alex and his crew came out over the weekend to get it done. the headache caused by our friend was erased by alex's skill & professionalism. the floor looks great. i wanted to hug him in the end. he said i could hug him, but i'd still need to pay him... :))) great guy, great work, great results - you couldn't ask for better!

With many years of experience, Alex is very good at what he does. Alex quoted me the same rate as Home Depot's installation dept. I don't think I would have gotten the same level of service from a big company though. He was very professional, always available when you call him, and trustworthy - which is improtant because I had to leave him and his worker at my place while I went to work.
He installed ceramic tiles on my kitchen floor. Even though it was a small project for him, he didn't make me feel like I was wasting his time. He was able to provide me with a Certificate of Liability (something my HOA required). He even picked up the tiles I bought from the store.
Good guy, I will definitely recommend him to my friends. -

Alex called after my first review. He was very upset and apologetic about having misplaced my phone number. Today he came out to give an estimate. He was very kind and thorough. If you just need tiling, I would recommend calling him.

I take it back!!! I'm sorry, Alex, you redeemed yourself so I must revise my review. Yes, Alex did stand me up, but called me back the next week and said that he felt guilty about having done so. He offered to do the job for a fraction of the price, which he did. I even offered him more money and he refused! Amazing. An honest contractor with a conscience. Alex is a great guy who does beautiful work. Why can't I find a painter like him?

I was really pleased with the tile job that Alex did for me. I found him on craigslist and was in kind of a hurry to get this tile job done. (My general contractor on the overall job had been dragging his feet so I jumped in and got my own tile guy). Alex was willing to come out that evening to take a look at the bathroom (shower and floor). He gave me a written quote (on the back of a biz card but a written quote nonetheless) and the next day had a one page contract drawn up. This made me feel much more secure. I've run into many a subcontractor that could do the work decently enough but the business/customer service aspect of the deal was missing. That always makes me feel uneasy. But Alex was all over it. He actually juggled another job and was able to start the next day. He did have one of his guys finish the job he started but he did a great job too. I'd had slightly lower quotes from another two other tile guys ($1200 & $1300 v $1600) - but having "got what I paid for" in the past, I took a chance with Alex and was happy with the result. Alex does good work, is reasonably priced, and pleasant to deal with.

Alex did a great job on our kitchen backsplash. I'd fully recommend him -- he was on-time and on-budget -- two rarities in this day and age. Alex was always reachable by cell, and came by the day before to check on the site and materials. This saved us rescheduling as we had the incorrect tile for the job. I'd recommend Alex -- the job looks great and we were pleased with the results and value we received for the money.

I contacted Alex to tile my shower, bath tub, bathroom floors, laundry room floor and kitchen floor. He and his worker completed it over the holidays. His worker started everyday at 7am until 7pm. They did a fantastic job and I am pleased with the outcome. I really appreciated him picking up the cement backerboard and mortar beforehand. All I had to do was provide the tile/grout. Alex was a pleasure to work with and I'll be hiring him in the future for other tile projects..

Alex Tile installed a bathroom tile floor, and repaired and replaced tile in a tub surround for me in July. The floor work was excellent, and the wall work also turned out great. I believed the work on the wall was complete, and had paid Alex, and the next day realized there was a miscommunication about a finish detail near a window sill. Alex was very responsive (he is generally very good about answering his cell phone), and returned the day after I phoned to complete the work as I had hoped. Would definitely recommend.
