We made a weekend visit to the vineyard and had a great time. For $5 you get to taste 11 wines. Compare this to wineries in California that charge $10-20 to taste 5 wines. The California wineries let you keep the glass, but if you're a wine drinker you probably don't need another wine glass. The grounds surrounding the tasting room include an outdoor sculpture area, a restored natural prairie, 2 bocce ball courts and lots of picnicking space. Check out the stone chairs carved out of huge boulders. Could I do that? To accompany your wine, buy some cheeses, sausage and a baguette from the winery store. They have some interesting locally produced cheeses. A plate and knives are provided gratis so you can slice the goodies and share with friends. I'm not a wine expert, but I found the Voyageur red to be very satisfying. It's won a number of awards, so I'm not the only one who likes it. The Seyval Blanc was nice. There are a number of sweet desert wines. Karen, who prefers sweets, liked Isis, an ice wine.  I found Ratafia, a fortified port with orange and spice flavors to be interesting. Bailly's Reserve Chocolate Port was also fascinating. The Bailly winery offers a pleasant, low cost afternoon away from the city. It wasn't so low cost for us because I succumbed and bought a few bottles to take home. However,  good accounting practice says that cost should be assigned to the future meal where the wine will be consumed.

A little touch of Sonoma in Minnesota.  The best winery in Minnesota for ambiance - decent prices for wine by the glass.  During the summer, live music, kill-a-keg, and roomy.  Hey you at the next table, keep it down over there!

I'm giving Alexis Bailly 3 stars by averaging the experience (4 stars) and the wine (2 stars).

Aleis Bailly has shirts that read "Where grapes can suffer." In fact, only 1 of their grape varities can be left out untouched during the winter without dying.  Given the extremely short Minnesota growing season, they make pretty good wines but you aren't going to mistake them for a $40 cab from California or France. Their best wines are probably the desert wines, so if you like ice wine or port you might love their wines.

All that said, I went to the Spring Festival with my girlfriend and some friends the other weekend and it was a blast. For $10 we got to try 7 wines and keep the etched glass we tasted from. (During a normal weekend you can try wine for $5 but have to buy the glass separately. The weather was gorgeous, the grounds were full of people picnicking, playing with dogs and drinking wine.  It was a little slice of wine country only 20 miles south of the Twin Cities.  I think we'll be heading back once a year or so to try the new wines and enjoy beautiful grounds.
