This review is for Leon Liu and not necessarily for the salon itself.
Leon took an hour to cut, and sculpt rather, my already shortish hair into a very cleanly styled pixie cut. Yes it was much shorter than I usually go, but it is growing out beautifully and i think that is the true test of a stylist who dares to cut short hair.
I was able to get in to see Leon in a day and on a Saturday to boot. He took his time with me and made no compromises with his work. He's serious about hair and treats each cut like art. If you have very specific ideas about what your head should look like, he's probably not the stylist for you. You need to be willing to take a small risk. It's worth it.
I got my haircut here by Leon about 2 months ago. At first I wasn't sure if I liked the cut, it was far shorter than I had ever gone, but it did flatter my face and it was VERY, VERY meticulously cut so there was not a single hair out of place--something that I really did appreciate since previous cuts, although I loved them (by other people) usually had one chunk that was jsut not right. After seeing it grow out just a little I discovered that I really did love the haircut! Although it wasn't something I would have gone with, I'm glad I let Leon style my hair- it really did turn out for the best in the end, although still a tad too short at the beginning.
Maybe my first clue should have been the creepy name of the establishment. Maybe I shouldn't have gone to a salon. Maybe the person who cut my hair should have been able to converse and/or understand English.
Worst haircut experience I've ever had. Despite explicit instructions regarding the style desired and clearly asking for the length of hair on the sides not being shortened, I constantly had to police the "stylist" and restate every few minutes not to shorten. "Stylist" responded to me once with, "But you NEED shorter."
There isn't much you can do after someone takes the first chunk off the side of your head though. So while my haircut may be symmetrical, it sure ain't what I wanted and repeatedly asked for.
Never going back.
I was visting Boston for a business trip and had a free day wondering around in downtown area, decided to get a a hair cut so I picked Vidal Sassoon, turned out the stylist I prefer is already booked, not wanting to waste 2 hours in the store reading boring magazines, I left and walked around where I saw Alexander, gotta admit it is not as an attractive store like the next door Vidal, Umi, Blu or Acote, but I know better how an expensive store may not always have good stylist.
Anyway, long story short, I was very happy with this stylist name Leon, I think he is the only male stylist in the store which is what I often prefer, thou not sure if he is straight or not, but all I truly care is about his cutting skill, haha.... This guy will tell you what he prefer, unlike many stylist that will simply tell you that anything you want will look perfect on you, I feel he has a great passion for what he does, and let you feel you are not just getting a simple hair cut.
A lot of stylists likes to put all kids stuff on your hair before you walk out,
by the time you go home and wash your hair only then you find out they screwed up big time, but not with Leon's cut, it is very natural, even, and
you dont get that fresh cut look the very next day, maybe because he only use scissor the whole time ?
Too bad I don't live in Boston, or else I would be coming back every 4-6 weeks.
I don't like reviewing haircuts right after I get them, because I usually hate the way they grow out. It's been about a month since I went to see Leon, and let me tell you, his haircuts are really as good as people rave on here. I have had so many haircuts in the past four years, and his' is by far the most technically precise and streamlined. It's too bad I'm moving, because this guy would be my go-to for every haircut in the future, no matter how much he charged.
I was in desperate need of a haircut and wandered into this hair salon on Newbury when pretty much all of the shops were closed. I was lucky, because I met Herold Rosales, and he agreed to stay late and cut my hair.
I have coarse, curly, stubborn hair, and I hate spending time on it. Herold listened to what I was looking for, paid attention to how much time I wanted to spend styling it (NONE) and than cut it so it not only met with those two specifications, but also so it will grow out well and longer like I wanted to. Anybody who makes my hair look good is some kind of genius. I'm sure he's equally talented with woman's hair as he is with men's.
He's a nice friendly guy and the prices were pretty reasonable for Newbury street. Woot!
I finally went for my first eyebrow threading today with Sahara, and the consideration to do so was due mostly to the Yelp recommendations. She's such a sweetheart, very meticulous, and incredibly good at what she does. You get a discount for your first time, and though most salons use the advertising method of recommending friends so you can earn free services, I will probably go through with recommending to other ladies rather than overlooking it.
Really precise. It was a nice time. Money well spent. I'd definitely go again, and I'd specifically go HERE.
They don't do threading here anymore. In fact, when I walked in, there was only one lady cutting hair and no one else. Not even a front desk lady or people mulling around waiting to cut people's hair...just ONE person. That's some serious economic downturning
Like most of my other shopping, I treat my eyebrows the same way: if I'm at a certain place, I'll plan accordingly. So, I might be not a very committed repeat customer, because I like to shop around.
But I have to say that Sahara gives this place the four stars. I finally got in to see her for eyebrow threading, and she is SO sweet and thoughtful. She takes her time, and carefully measures where your brows should be--and doesn't take off too much. Plus, she'll tell you why, if it's the shape of your face or to fill in an odd spot. I just went in for a clean-up, so it took about 20 minutes.
This was my second visit for my brows. The first time, Sahara was running late, and I couldn't stay. Ozuli (I think) ended up waxing my brows (after she'd come in from her cig break). She did a good job, but took her time, which was hard because I had another appointment to get to--so, not her fault. It reminded me how much more painful waxing is than threading! Because I was no longer a 1st time customer, my threading was $18 ($15 for first timers) with Sahara.
However, I will say that the management here seems to be in transition. The woman working the front desk was barely friendly--it was the other stylists who didn't have clients at the time who welcomed me, offered water, assured me Sahara was on her way, etc. They were lovely. Sahara apologized profusely for being 10-15 minutes late to my appointment, because she didn't realize she had a 1:00 when she had called earlier. So, don't go if you're in a time crunch.
I still like all the threaders I've seen before, but it's nice to know that there are alternatives, too!
I was wandering down Newbury street in desperate need of a threader ( hair removal) when I stumbled upon this little gem of a salon. Sahara just started working there and does an excellent threading job. If you haven't done threading before, its a great alternative to waxing hair off your face, especially on the eyebrows and upper lip. Your eyebrows come out much more precise, the hair takes longer to grow back, and your skin isn't all stretched out.
I know that I have been searching Yelp for a while to find a good threader and I am glad that day has come. The salon is very affordable, I think its $12 for the upper lip and a bit more for eyebrows. While it lacks the glitz and glamour of some of the other salons, it also lacks the jacked up prices and the stylists inside make you feel like a regular as soon as you set foot inside.
so although i was happy with the threader at salon luiz, i was feeling a little pressure from her during my last few sessions do get more done. after i said no two or three times in a row, i thought it might do to see what else is out there.
if salon luiz was pushy, sahara at alexander's was the exact opposite. she seems to be building up her client base, so when i told her that the lady i used to go to was being pushy and the horror story about leeba, she was very cautious and told me everything she was doing while she was doing it, which was nice.
my only complaint is that she is very s-l-o-o-o-w. if my eyebrow hair nerves weren't deadest things in deadonia* it would have been quite painful. she was VERY enthusiastic and very pleasant, and after trying the place on mt auburn street, i will decide which boston area eyebrow threader will have the pleasure of trimming the hairy caterpillars on my face.
if you are looking for a threader, i would recommend sahara - she will listen to what you want and talk you through everything that is doing on, letting you check the progress as she goes. her technique is a little slow, though; if you need confidence, check out fahane at salon luiz - but be prepared for an up sell there.

I went to see Sahara for eyebrow threading and she was wonderful! Very warm, accommodating, and offered tips on how to keep them looking good. Haven't tried anyone else in the area for this service, but now I don't need to.
