My dad was a HUGE fan of Blue Lagoon in Lahaina.  Blue Lagoon in Lahaina has gone and closed and been replaced by Da Kitchen.  Immediately upon arrival in Maui, Dad needed some fish n chips STAT, somewhere in place of Blue Lagoon.  Alexander's had been recommended, and is near the airport in Kihei, so off we went.
I hear it's "not as good" as BL, and the ambieace is definitely lacking, but the food delivered.
First trip there was fish n chips, fish tacos with mango salsa, cajun grilled mahi and tempura style sweet potatoes (they're purple here and simply gorgeous).  The cajun grilled mahi I ordered was fab and the table went nearly silent as we all inhaled our food.  Every scrap was gone by the end, so I'm guessing everyone liked it.
The second trip I ordered grilled mahi AND grilled ono, but didn't say "cajun grilled" which was a mistake.  Say "cajun grilled" or you really just get a piece of plain ass grilled fish which is totally not as good as the cajun stuff.  I also got the basket of tempura veggies which were pretty tasty.
Inexpensive, central Kihei location (near shops and directly across from the beach), fried and healthy options available, tasty food.  A winner.

We went there again the other night just for convenience.  This time I tried the fish, shrimp, calamari combo.  I choose Ono (a.k.a. Wahoo) for my fish and had everything deep fried.  Wifey opted for for grilled oyster.

The fish was perfectly done, cooked through and still moist.  The shrimp was the same.  The calamari was very tender and not at all rubbery.  The oyster was clean tasting and very tasty.  All the seafood were excellent.

This place is keeping its 5 stars in my book.

A total rip off! Why did I come here? Oh, I was with my tourist friends who've never been to Maui.

10 years ago this place was a pretty decent little tourist fish and chips joint. Now it's *$12* YES 12 for a handfull of frozen french fries, 5 shrimp the size of quarters, and 2 pieces of fish maybe 3"x3"x1/2". It wasn't terrible but I'll never eat there again. Compared to what it used to be, it's gone to the dogs. Why waste your money? If you want fish, try something local and go to Foodland a couple blocks away and get some fresh poke or sushi from the deli for half the price.

Don't even think about it. The fish sandwich at McDonald's better.

Fish and chips with Ahi, Mahi or Ono made this place a visit again little dive. Worth the visit and with healthier grilled versions there is something for everyone.

We tried Alexander's on a recommendation from friends.   I was a little hesitant as the reviews are up and down from Yelpers.
The place is definitely out of the pages of Triple-D.  Divey, dirty and decent.   The place is def on the dirty side with sticky tables and lots of flies, but I can get over that.   We got the fish n chips and fish tacos at the recommendation of the guy behind the counter and we added some calamari.   He was a very nice guy with a lot of info on fish, etc and was very helpful and inviting.  When the food was brought to our table, I immediately noticed how greasy it was!   I'm not afraid of greasy foods, but this was so greasy that it was shiny!   The fish was good but a little bland.  The calamari was just ok, too greasy.  Also, the batter was weird in that it was falling apart and coming off the fish /calamari.   The fish tacos were good as well with decent amounts of fish in it.
Overall it was a decent place, but probably won't go back again.

EXCELLENT!!! My husband and I shared the Fish and Shrimp combo with fries. It was to die for. The best fish and shrimp we've had on Maui, deep fried and all. Not something you can have everyday unless you want to damage your arteries some more, but a great treat. They do offer a healthier alternative, grilled instead of deep fried. We knocked out a star for the outside seating. Depending on the weather, it can be uncomfortable, but I would say worth it. We will be adding this to our traditional stops when coming out to Maui!

I'm so glad that I'm back at home in SF now because I'm not sure how much more of the Maui food I could tolerate!  Alexander's wasn't half-bad though, I suppose.

Plusses:
* Outdoor seating in the breezy shade
* Relatively fast service for the laidback Hawaiians
* Supposedly the fried purple yams (that my friends got on another occasion when I was back at the hotel) were raveworthy

Minuses:
* I ordered the grilled ono with french fries. Pretty darned bland ono...which I had to jazz up with a full packet of salt and 3 packets of pepper
* My friends ordered the mahi mahi tacos w/ mango salsa...not much flavor there either!
* Blech :P on the so-called famous onion rings that my friend ordered
* I was getting tired of eating out of paper containers with plastic silverware if I was spending $12 for a lunch

This placehas lost it charm. Small portions, cold Fries, and tasteless fish. The cold slaw and taro potatoe fries is worth it.
The tables are filthy and Flies ridden. The health board should get on it.

SUCH A RIP OFF.  The portion sizes here are unbelievably small.  Nothing memorable at all about this place.  If you want fish and chips, go to the Pa'ia Fish Market, where the price is almost the same, but it is totally worth it.

The handy Lonely Planet recommended this place as cheap and good, which it was. We were driving around pretty starving, so we decided to stop in.

We had fish tacos and fried purple yams (ube). The fish tacos were OK but the fried yams were really tasty.

Give it a try - probably kids would love it.

Miss this place.  Had Deep Fried Oysters, Fish n' Chips, Deep Fried Shrimp, and Deep Fried Mushrooms the other day in Fremont but it just wasn't the same.  Fried Oysters are the best.  It's all worth the grease and artery clogging.

Fabulously priced combos...my personal favorite is their Mahi Mahi...it is sooo tender & practically melts in your mouth!  You stand in line to order, but not for long & nor do you wait for long after you order to receive your food.  The other fish choices are great fried or grilled.  Only seating is outdoors, but where else would you would to sit & enjoy fresh seafood at great prices practically shore-front to the Pacific Ocean in Maui?

I can't say enough about this place--it is among my top two favorite places to eat in all the of United States!

You'd be better off going to a Long John Silver's.  It was hard to distinguish the deep fried chicken from the fish.  Couldn't find any malt vinegar to go on my fish and fries.  My fiancee got the fish tacos and sent them back.  The mango salsa was disgusting.

We checked out Alexander's Fish & Chips on our most recent visit to Maui at the recommendation of a friend that lives there.  The big selling point was that they offer up a grilled fish option instead of all deep fried fish.  My friend Brooke and I got the grilled ono and it was unfortunately a little dry and pretty bland even for ono, but my wife got the oysters and my son got the chicken deep fried in their tempura batter and that was awesome.

Holy balls this place is great!

On our way back to the hotel I got me a grease attack and needed some fried food.  I think we ordered everything on the menu... fish, shrimp, calamari.

Go here, get the onion rings.  They are the best.

Beach food!  If you're looking for a fish dinner outside with an ocean view, for less than $15, this is it!  Sort of. Grilled fish, fries, a little slaw, & a soda, for $11.50. Sit outside along the Kihei main drag, & see the ocean through the ball field. Cajun grilled Ono...yum. Cheap and good.

I LOVE fish and chips! I have been ordering them whenever possible since I was a kid (my weight is proof of this bad habit) so you can imagine how psyched I was to try Alexander's. Unfortunately, I tried it twice and was disappointed both times. It wasn't awful, but it just wasn't as good as I was expected. The batter is pretty heavy and it was a bit greasy. The fried yams were good though for something a little original.

I don't mean to be a fish and chips snob but for those of you in the Northwest, spoiled by Ivar's, it seems that hardly anything else ever measures up to such a high standard.

The Ono was firm and flakey as it should be. The portions are a bit small. One piece of fish is more like a half piece.

Everything is expensive on Maui due to tourism and having to have everything shipped here.

One of the more inexpensive places to eat is Alexander's.  They are famous for ribs, fish tacos and fish and chips.  Quite possibly the best fish and chip I've ever eaten.  Lightly battered and you have your choice of Mahi, Ono and Ahi.  Expect to spend about $10 for a meal and a drink.

Ick. I consider myself a great lover of ribs, but these ribs?? The sauce was good, but they had somehow managed to tenderize them so the bone turned into pulp. I tried to pull the meat of the bone and the bones went SQUISH between my fingers, giving me quite the heebie jeebies. I understand this might be desirable to some people, but I want to be able to tell the difference between bone and flesh just using my mouth, which proved impossible. The fish tacos with mango salsa that my boyfriend ordered was apparently quite tasty, but my own ribs were so awful I felt sick for an hour after, and I couldn't eat more than one or two french fries because they were unsalted and bland. Not a good meal for me.

What happened to my dear Alexanders? It used to be sooo good. I had the cajun mahi sandwich and hush puppies. The fish was tasteless, the hush puppies were like rocks. We used to come here two or three times when we visited the island, but no more. Alexanders has lost its yummieness =(

I've been traveling to Maui for many years, and I think this place is living off its reputation. Back in the day, it was unique and really good. More recently, I have found the fish and chips to be greasy. Your choices are ahi, ono, and mahi. Ahi doesn't work very well battered and fried. Ono is pretty tasteless. Mahi is your best bet if you must eat here.
The place has all the charm of a truck-stop Burger King. You order your food at the self-service counter, pay, and then stand around until they call your number. No seats inside. The outdoor dining area is set up in the alley between the street and the public parking lot. There are overflowing trash cans and flies. What you should do is carry your food across the street to the beach park and eat over there.
I prefer the fish and chips at Eskimo Candy in Kihea, but EC closes at 5:00PM, and Alexander's is open late, so if you need a fish fix at night, at least Alexander's is there.

We tried this place out on a recommendation from one of my husband's co-workers and we loved it.  It's just a casual fish and chip stand with outdoor seating, but they do what they do very well.  The batter on the fish is amazing.  The fries were good.  The shrimp and chicken were both good as well.  They had all the right trimmings too - tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, malt vinegar, ketchup.  A little pricey for fish and chips, like everyone else said.  But it's Maui, what do you expect?

Maui is known for Fish Tacos. This is a Hawaiian thing, not a Mexican thing. Alexander's is the best place for Fish Tacos. Hell, they're the best place for lunch or a casual dinner. Everything is great! The only set back is a creepy outdoor dining area. It's an alleyway.

The service was great. I should qualify this review by saying that I was expecting amazing fish and chips. The fried shrimp was good, as was the cajun style mahi mahi. Their batter for the fried stuff is tasty. Maybe we had a bad order because the cajun ono was kind of tough (unlike the fried ono, which was very good). All in all, not too exciting.

Good food.  As Maui goes, the price for value ratio gives Alexander's high marks, maybe the best for our limited experience there.  What they do, they do well.  Love the shrimp sandwich with fries & coleslaw.  Very laid back & enjoyable.
