Tired, dusty and hungry....we had just gotten off the trail up to Comet Falls.  It was 8:30 PM and we were in dire need of grub before the long drive home to Snohomish County.    We had spotted Alexander's on the way into the park...we didn't think they would seat us since it was 8:50 PM and they officially close at 9.  However, the hostess graciously seated us and a few other parties who came in right after we did.  (That was nice...maybe a reflection on a hurting economy and the need to be somewhat flexible to accomodate customers. )

We weren't sure what to expect from a restaurant right outside a national park, (Mount Rainier) but we were quite impressed with the menu selections and the board specials...the one my husband picked was the veal scallopini on  pasta.  Generous servings and well-prepared.  The portions of all of our meals were very generous.  I had the strawberry rhubarb salad, very fresh and abundant with fresh berries and candied walnuts.  The dressing was a rhubarb vinaigrette which was very tasty.  They also offered a maple vinaigrette for other salads.

The menu was quite diverse.  Someone else in our party had a classic hamburger and another had chicken with polenta.  All meals were really well-prepared.

The dessert was fabulous, a fudge and mocha ice-cream cake.

Nice touch:  the chef came out to meet us and other guests in the dining room since it was well after closing by the time we were enjoying dessert.

We were still tired but definitely well-fed.  I am looking forward to returning when we continue our September hiking at Mount Rainier in a couple of weeks.

Good food.  I have been here before on my trips to Packwood and I welcome the good food and service as quite different than anything available in Packwood, though I wish it were a closer drive.

We had a party of 6 and with reservations, we were promptly seated.  The house wine was ordered (5 bottles by the end of the night, we did like it) at $19.95 a bottle. For appetizers we ordered two servings of the spotted prawns which were very good.

The ravioli was amazing.  Others in our party had the trout, 4 cheese lasagna, and chicken.  All seemed to like it.  Soup and salads were good too.

    Ended with some good deserts.

Our server was friendly and helpful.

    I will be back.

Alexander's tries to present themselves as a fancy restaurant, but they are totally missing the mark with their poor customer service and atmosphere. It is a joke that they have a sign in front of their restaurant stating that they are Voted the best restaurant. Hands down Cooper Creek food is 100% better, plus they have excellent customer service.

If you don't have a "reservation" they treat you like a second class person. They ignore you and spend more time serving the customers with reservations. They passed our table a number of times before they took our salad dishes, forgot our appetizers and wanted to bring it with our dinner and neglected to bring us our drinks when we asked a few times. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone!

Great food. For the location, there are only a handful of places to eat, and this is one of the best.

At one time, eating at Alexander's was the high point of a day spent in the southern Mt. Rainer region. As recently as 2005 we had a great Saturday night celebration dinner after my little girl made it up to Panorama Point. The table service was friendly and responsive, the trout from the pond was tasty, the dessert was delicious, and they even brought out a lovely fruit arrangement for my daughter, who has food restrictions and can't eat most bakery desserts. The place was filled, and we were seated in the back area.

Alas, we returned recently on a weeknight and were disappointed. The restaurant was nearly empty, which was perhaps a tipoff. The wait and kitchen staff were still friendly, but let several details slip through the cracks. A couple of times we asked for things like extra napkins or crayons for the children, and were promised them, but never received them. We ordered an entrée for my daughter (the one with the food allergies), and though we made it clear that she needed to be dairy-free, they still brought out potatoes with a cheese topping (they were friendly and accommodating, though, about discussing the allergies and what might work for her). A duck entrée was tasty but came with very little meat (we ended up ordering a second one). The scampi and fish were acceptable, but nothing special. The rice and vegetables that came with the entrees were lackluster at best. The homemade bread is still good. I don't know if the restaurant has fundamentally changed in the last couple years (no sign of ownership change judging from their Web site), or if by going on a weeknight we simply encountered the "second string" kitchen and wait staff. But we came away wishing we'd done Copper Creek Inn instead.

Located near the west entrance to Mt Rainier National Park, this gem is located in a century old Inn which has been artistically restored.  Nice menu, very good food, and friendly efficient service.  We would go there again.  Don't miss the old log buildings across the street.
