Close to where I live, parking, excellent service in front office, excellent service by doctor, nice selection of frames, genuinely helpful staff. I can only agree with the previous reviews here. Keep up the good work. I'm spreading the word. This is a well run business.

I am so thrilled to find this office. After going through many optometrists who pushed stronger prescriptions every time and/or particular methods like bifocal, mono-vision and what have you, the approach of Dr. Lukens of "if it's working, let's leave it for now" is the most comfortable to me. But at the same time, he has through knowledge about both vision and other eye conditions. Extra plus (too bad 5 stars are maximum) that his assistant found a great deal for contact lens that's better than http://Lens.com!

6 stars for this place if I could. Alex Lukens is a top notch optometrist that can actually communicate effectively. He took the time to answer all my questions and addresses every concern I had. I did not feel like I was bothering him or sense that he was trying to blast through my appointment. His equipment is updated and state of the art, and the office itself has great decor. Best eye examination I have ever experienced!

Alex Lukens is a rare combination: 1 - a gifted doctor who is thorough, deeply knowledgable, proactive and detail oriented; 2 - able to communicate exceptionally well, is calm, warm, friendly and never makes you feel like you are asking too much of him or too many questions; 3 - provides the most exceptional 'go the extra mile' customer service I've ever experienced from a doctor. Additionally, his staff also go the extra mile in terms of getting insurance questions handled, getting you what you need, etc. I really can't say enough good things about Dr. Lukens - he's the best doc I've ever been to - I only wish more doctors were like him and provided the level of care and service that he provides. Bonus is that his office is in a small mall where there's always parking, and getting in to see him is generally pretty easy.

I'm a huge fan of Dr. Lukens for both kids and adults!
I took my 6-year-old daughter to see Dr. Lukens as she was complaining about eye pain. He has a young son who attends our preschool and he was absolutely wonderful with my daughter. He was comfortable, warm, and didn't talk down to her. He examined her thoroughly but kept her engaged, and in the end gave us some suggestions for what was causing the eye trouble and how to address it -- without needing any prescriptions or expensive specialized products!
I also noticed that he was showing and had an opening for a local artists' work. He's connected to the community, warm, and kind. He also had a good eye for what looks good on people and steered my husband towards some great frames.
Couldn't recommend more highly! -

I have been unlucky in life to be cursed with uneven myopia. (Aka, nearsighted, but one eye worse than the other.) But I have ALSO been LUCKY in life to have had great eye doctors: Dr. Georgitsis-Auerbach in L.A. and now Dr. Lukens in Alameda.
Dr. Lukens is THE BOMB. If you live in the East Bay area, especially Oakland or Alameda, make it a point to schedule an visit with him for your next eye exam. He is warm and friendly, and somehow his calm and easygoing demeanor makes you think he should also run a spa or something. I know that every time I visit his office my body relaxes 100%. He's like the Bob Ross of optometry. Happy little trees... Which image is clearer, this, or this?.... Ommmmmm... ahhhhh.
Before I forget, his staff is pretty awesome too.
I'm sad because I no longer live in the area, but that doesn't stop me from recommending his services to everyone else. Work those specs! -

We needed to find a new Optometrist when our insurance changed - most of the providers we saw were pretty run of the mill or chain type stores - saw Dr. Lukin's office listed and lo and behold! A Cal grad (Go Bears) AND right across the water from us. A match made in heaven!
I concur about all reviews - Raj is awesome (tho I'm jealous about all of the nifty frames he wears). And Alex is great! The first Optometrist that actually explains what the heck all of tests are for (and I really love the little farmhouse - you need to go for an exam to get this part!). Very cool selection of unusual frames - not inexpensive but if you're wearing them evey day then it's absolutely worth the splurge. Waiting for my Rudy Project shades to arrive - my Anne et Valtines are completely groovy......
Thanks guys! -

Dr. Lukens is great, but he gets minus four stars for being in Alameda now. I saw him several times when he was in the Castro and I would highly recommend him. He was patient, present, gentle, informative and seemed very knowledgeable.
I'm almost tempted to go to Alameda to see him. -

Eyewise Optometry is a neighborhood jewel. My eyes are very weird and each time I went to other optometrists I wound up with glasses totally useless for reading. Dr. Lukens completely understood what was going on, gave me the perfect eye exam and my new glasses totally rock. I can't tell you how great it is to see again - and how great it is to trust your healthcare provider. He's calm, kind, and really, really skilled. Sheila (Dr. Lukens' assistant) is wonderful. She tracked down the perfect (but discontinued) set of frames I found at another store a few years earlier and ordered them in a couple of different colors, so I could pick the one I wanted. She's great at knowing what looks good and I like her feedback, and gentle sense of humor.
Also I'll echo the person who works for a Fortune 500 company that recently switched to the worst eye insurance around. I thought I was confined to Sears optometry department and was totally amazed that Dr. Lukens takes our coverage. Love the atmosphere in the office ... beautiful frames ... hip music ... nice artwork on the walls and lots of support for local artists. I'm really happy I found this practice: great people and a great place to do business, at many different levels. -

Alex Lukens and his staff are absolutely amazing. From the moment I walked in I felt welcomed and at ease as if I had been going there for years.
Dr. Lukens is not only extremely kind and friendly but he also takes the time to educate you about each and every step in the process.
I absolutely love the fact that they support Bay Area frame designers such as Kala Eyewear, and have a huge selection of young hip frames.
Eyewise is by far the best office I have ever been to and I will be recommending it to everyone! Can't wait for my glasses to come in.
Thanks guys! -

Dr. Lukens and his staff are great. The office is in a convenient location in Alameda, they are always very responsive and helpful when I need to order contact lenses, and he is clearly a caring and competent doctor. Highly recommended.

Raj comes through again, just picked up a new pair of "Rudy Project" sunglasses, I purchase a new motorcycle recently and when riding with my prescription Maui Jim's my eyes would water up from the wind swirling around causing my eyes to tear/dry up to a point of dangerously blurred vision. Talked to Raj about my situation and he had a solution in less then 10 seconds, suggested the Rudy Project Guardyan sunglasses took 3 weeks to get them built but OMG worth the wait, they work, look and feel great! I imagine they'll work in any kind of sport where wind is involve (snow skiing come to mind) for a little extra they come with a head strap similar to ski goggles which I of coursed order as per Raj recommendation.
Thanks Raj, once again Eyewise has beaten my expectations and I expect a lot when it come to spending hundreds of dollars on any kind of prescription glass wear.

Dr. Lukens is very nice. The ladies in the front are also very sweet. I work for a fortune 500 company that recently switched our eye coverage to an insurance that basically would make us go to Walgreens. No thanks. Luckily, Dr. Lukens takes our shitty coverage. I got a nice pair of glasses and now Im set.

I never enjoyed a visit to the eye doctor until Eyewise. It's mod, the music is great, there is an art gallery on the walls, and Raj is the most professional, friendly optomistrist I have ever encountered in an Dr's office situation. I have been working through an eye issue with Dr. Lukens, and have never been so thoroughly and thoughtfully treated. He is willing to listen to me as a patient, and prescribe treatments that work not only for my issue, but for my lifestyle. And, I love my glasses that I bought here - Raj does all the paperwork, so it is a carefree experience. Highly, highly recommend.

Went here about a couple weeks ago, checked out the reviews through yelp of course. Very professional place, it's been a few years since I had an eye exam so the exam went great and was treated very well. They have plenty of local independant brands of frames, can be pricy if you don't have insurance but very nice frames, recommend this place if you care bout customer service, other then that this place is great for eye exams and some local brand frames :)

Wow! I absolutely loved my experience with Dr. Lukens and his staff. I went to a different optometrist for 19 years before making an appointment this past December w/Dr. Lukens. In one visit he was able to diagnose, treat and heal a long time issue w/my eye being red and irritated. He also worked w/me to assure that I had the right fitting contact lenses which actually improved my vision so much that I now do need reading glasses!!
If that wasn't enough Dr. Lukens saw me through another eye issue that I accidentally caused myself. If I could give 10 stars I would! -

I am someone who has had eye issues since I was born and have been wearing contacts since I was three or four years old--had eye surgery when I was five or six. So eyecare is a big part of my life, and it is *very* important for me to have an optometrist who is knowledgable, trustworthy, and with who I feel comfortable. If you are looking for the same experience, Dr. Lukens is for you.
I moved to the Bay Area a little over a year ago and needed to find an optometrist for my yearly eye exams and contacts. Prior to moving here, I had gone to the same eye doctor since I was four, so I was very anxious as to whether I would find one that meets my standards. Thankfully, I picked up a business card advertising Eyewise Optometry just upstairs in my dentist's office.
Eyewise Optometry is only 8 or 9 months old, and is in a very modern and clean area equiped with all of the up-to-date technology. They carry a fashionable variety of frames, Raj is very knowledgable on their stock. He will make sure that your new frames fit you right and is more than happy to help a walk-in with adjusting their frames.
Dr. Lukens knows his stuff. He is very welcoming and is good about walking you through the procedures of your eye exam, explaining what each test does. He answers all of your questions, doesn't rush, and is very thorough. I needed to have my contacts prescription updated, which I hadn't done in a couple of years. He suggested a lens that would probably better fit my eye and feel more comfortable. Boy, was he right! I have my new lenses in now and they feel *so* much more comfortable!
Their hours are very convenient for those who work 9-5 during the week. A couple days a week they are open until 7, and they are even open on Saturdays.
Above all, both Raj and Dr. Lukens were extremely helpful in processing my insurance. And in the end, I cannot complain about the cost of the excellent services I received. If you are looking for a friendly, modern, comfortable, and effectively pleasing experience for your eye needs, go visit Dr. Lukens! -

Finally a place to get high quality, unique frames with great customer service in the east bay! For me spending more on a great pair of frames I will wear for years is worth it rather than going the route of some of my friends-buying cheap Costco frames that look boring and break within a year. I want something cool if it's going to be on my face! Alex and Raj really know their stuff and have put time into bringing in unusual lines you won't find at every optometry store. Once my glasses were back, Raj made sure they were adjusted perfectly. It's been a few months that I've been wearing my Bevel glasses and I still love them, and get regular compliments on them when out and about. In addition the store is really modern, new and clean and that feels good when you are getting an exam and spending some cash on frames.
