You don't need yet another 5 star review to tell you what is obvious- go see this man! All the other reviews on here told me that, I went, and it was one of the top decisions I've made. My best yelp-related decision by far! ;-)
I couldn't honestly say I'm a believer in acupuncture and I still went. Dr. Lau's website said to just not bring negativity. So I went in empty minded about it. I went in for major back issues as a last resort because thousands of dollars later nothing was working with other doctors. I now go to Dr. Lau with any and every issue imaginable. No matter how small or minor you might think something is, he can help; just tell him honestly what goes on in your life. Things I've dealt with my whole life and assumed were "natural", Dr. Lau had a cure for!
This is the bottom line for me- Dr. Lau cares. He knows your name, your case and your history. You aren't a number. He wants to make your life better. He talks you through things, he listens, and he doesn't attempt to sell you on anything. I have never had a doctor like this and I trust him completely. The acupuncture has given me aid and pain relief for issues that over 3 years of American/Western doctors could not. I began to tell Dr. Lau about any various ailment or concern I have and he has, without fail, assisted me every time. -

first time seeing alex lau as my lower back was bothering me and i was seeking relief. his facility is old, outdated and very sterile. it's sort of like walking into a hole in the wall spot in china town sf which would be fine if i was looking for some cheap chinese food but for $60 a pop for treatment, i was hoping for a more relaxing, soothing environment... even a doctors office would have been more sufficient. the entire experience feels rushed and i had the feeling, he was trying to fit as many patients in as possible to make his $60 a pop. while you're on the table, you can hear every conversation he has from taking phone calls, greeting patients in the waiting room and him treating other patients in rooms next to mine. he saw me for 2 mins for my consultation worth of questions and than spoke to me for another 2-3 mins before sticking me with needles while telling me to relax and i'll be fine. not exactly comforting nor thorough for a $25 consultation on top of the $60 treatment.
no credit cards accepted, cash or check only and my receipt was hand written. i wonder how much of his business is under the table so he doesn't have to pay taxes on what he collects.
as for my back pain, i can't say i felt any relief but i'm sure i would need to give acupuncture a few treatments before i see a difference which I'll be doing just not w/ alex lau -

Dr. Lau is a miracle worker, I was completely pain free after a few weeks of treatment. He not only helped my life long back pain, but also helped with sports injuries. I'm so glad I found him, and can't recommended him enough.

I came to Dr Lau when I felt that my other acupuncture just wasn't doing the best job for me. He has the best bed side manners, speaks chinese and english and just a really nice guy... and I'm happy to say that I'm pregnant, which was my goal... I also brought my 3 yr old daughter when she is sick. She doesn't get the needles, just other ways of making her healthy like heat lamp, tiger balm, pressure point rubbing etc.

Writing on behalf of my father...
I recently sent my father, who was visiting from Japan, to see Dr. Lau since he was aching badly in his shoulder and needed help asap. Dr. Lau welcomed him that same afternoon I called.
He came home 120% better...not exactly cured, but better. -

This man is a miracle worker!!!!
I've injured my shoulder over a year ago due to an ATV'ing accident (I flew off an ATV when it stopped, I didn't). I thought I would have to live with the pain forever. I took time off from dragon boat and paddling. It's been over a year and seeing a chiropractor, I thought it would help. Went back to paddling this summer and the pain was back within a few weeks. I didn't want to sit on the bench. I want to be on the water with my team mates, so I did the unthinkable and looked up a doctor on my insurance's website. Someone said I should really look into acupuncture. ACUPUNCTURE?? Really? You mean needles and all that stuff?
And I called his office the same day and blindly went to Dr. Alex Lau as I couldn't find him on YELP. After my first session, I knew I had to keep coming back for more treatments. He is not aggressive at all and let's you decide how many times and how many treatments. Dr. Lau said up to 3 treatments would be sufficient for my "minor" injury. I went for my fourth and final session today and he also treated my ankle because I rolled it snowboarding in December. I walked out of there with no neck pain and can go back to paddling in two weeks.
Dr. Alex Lau has made me a believer in Eastern Medicine! -

I had suffered from insomnia for about 2 years. Trust me, sleeping 4 hours/night for the last 2 years have been very miserable. To cure this, I was going to a massage therapist, but the effects would only last that night.
I was also suffering from anxiety. This was all in part from not getting enough sleep. I would have racing thoughts at night and have fear that I can't sleep..staring at the clock every now and then to see that an hour had passed and just envying my husband sleeping away..how much I had wished to be able to sleep like the rest of the world..Its amazing how one can get very little sleep and be very exhausted but cannot fall asleep still.....
I was also experiencing irregular periods and recently, I had a bad accident during snowboarding about a month ago, so I cracked and injured my neck. My neck was stiff and in pain for a week, but it went away...Recently, just 3 days ago, out of no where, my neck pain came back...I've been massaging it and streching it but nothing...
I was always skeptical about acupuncture but my dad and my friends really believed in it and thought that with my symptoms, I should give it a try, so I did. It was very easy making an appointment. Dr. Lau was very nice, professional and really listened to my problem. I was very nervous at first because the thought of needles piercing into my skin, but he was very gentle. During my treatment, I feel asleep 6 times and even caught myself snoring so loud, that it woke me up! I even had intense dreams during those 6 times I knocked out. After we were finished, I felt very good. Brand new, recharged. That night, I slept so good, I have not slept so good in 2 years. My husband even said that I was snoring very loud and didn't wake up when he did...
Thank you so much, Dr. Lau. You are my hero. I can't wait to go back...I am so glad that I gave it a try. -

I'm currently seeing Dr. Lau for those horrendous monthly cramps that come with being a woman. I've been suffering from them since college.
I remember the first time I was attacked by these evil cramps. I was all alone in my freshmen apartment, as all of my roommates had gone home for the weekend. I was awoken in the middle of the night by the excruciating pains coming from my stomach. I curled up into the fetal position but that didn't help. I started hot-flashing and sweating profusely and decided to get up and go to the bathroom. I could barely walk and somehow ended up crawling to the bathroom. I was on the verge of calling 911 for help. It was that bad. As I got up from the floor, I looked at my reflection in the mirror and my face was literally pale as a ghost. I laid back in bed and hoped to survive the night. Somehow, some way, I passed out and slept soundly until the next morning.
And that's when it all started. Every month, the range of pain varies, but they're always bad. I've learned to preemptively avoid them by popping Midol or Aleve the night before I expect the cramps to arrive. It's a horrible dependency that I've been wanting to shed, but without the drugs, I cannot function. And that's where Dr. Lau comes in because I've heard that acupuncture can alleviate the cramps.
Although I can't attest to the noticeable differences just yet--I just started seeing him and it's not "time" yet, I can tell you that Dr. Lau is a very compassionate and good acupuncturist. He asks you all the right questions. Most importantly, he makes you feel comfortable with the whole acupuncture experience. I've always been afraid of needles, but the little pricks are really nothing to fret about. Dr. Lau explains to you what he's doing and he's very careful.
He's got several clinics around the Bay, including an on-site clinic at Electronic Arts. His main hub is the Foster City office, which is large and orderly. He's also got a back room full of Chinese herbs, so if you'd like, he could prescribe you Chinese medicine too!
I'm definitely going to keep seeing Dr. Lau and hope that everything will be better. I know it's not a quick process, but stayed tuned!Listed in: Keeping my mind sound and my…

I felt the need to update this since I was a little skeptical that acupuncture even worked. I was (am) being treated for Plantar Fasciitis which is a painful foot condition....and I am happy to say that instead of spending 400 bucks on orthotic inserts for my shoes, and another 80 bucks for cortisone shots, I decided to try acupuncture. It has worked! I have no more pain in my heel and still can't quite believe it myself.
Thanks Dr. Lau!1 Previous Review: Show all »

I have gone to Dr. Lau for over two years and the man is a "Rockstar".
I had been injured at work and tried everything including painful cortisone shots in my hip and back for Sciatica. The day before the injury I laid 300 feet of tile with no problem and four months later when I first saw Dr. Lau, I couldn't walk with out a cane. I was skeptical and have an insane fear of needles but would do anything for relief.Three treatments and the cane was gone!!!
I will be eternally in his debt and have no problem referring everyone I know. -

I went to Alex for a number of years when I worked at Electronic Arts. He was our on site acupuncturist. I'm glad to have returned after a 1.5 year hiatus. I liked Alex cause he was thorough at really getting all the points of tension working through faster with not just needles, but with electrical stimulation of the muscles too. Alex does electroacupuncture and we've found that it can get really intense pain and tightness out of muscles....as I was reading there is something about switching between two frequencies that stimulates the nerves to release. We'll be visiting him regularly now that we found out he takes our insurance coverage. Cheers to my 24 covered visits!

My wife was having a breech baby at 36 weeks with ultrasound test. She was very frustrated about that at the beginning.
After researching online, we decided to try all possible approaches. We dropped by Lau's office for acupuncture tries. He is very encouraging to us for the trial. Dr. Lau used both acupuncture and some special herb burning methods. My wife also did the exercise specified by the OB.
After one and half week, the baby turned himself in the next ultrasound test! We were really happy with the results because it worked :) -

I love Dr. Lau! He's an awesome and a genuinely caring doctor. He is very patient and never makes me feel rushed. He also takes the time to get to know his patients. I've been going to him for my back and neck problems for a while now. He has manage to take alot of the discomfort away, especially if you have headaches or any aches around your body-- he has the solution for you. I would also suggest seeing him if you are pregnant, because during my pregnancy, he has relieved a lot of the aches & pains that carry on throughout the months. He also gives great advice and knows his Chinese medicine like the back of his hand. I appreciate his attentiveness and wisdom for the work he does. I highly recommend seeing Dr. Lau!

Dr. Lau has helped me with a lot of conditions in the past 2.5 years: Back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, overall stress symptoms such as insomnia and TMJ; and most recently: plantar fasciitis. I first started seeing him at the company I worked for, EA, Electronic Arts. I continued to see him in his private practice when I left EA. Not only are his treatments very effective; but he is also a wonderful human being who cares for his patients. He is very patient too. I can't recommend him highly enough.

I wish that each person could experiencing the amazing talent and end results of Dr. Lau. I have been going to Acupuncturist for nearly 30 years and never have had my body respond this radically positive, as of yet. Battling a major illness with pain, sickness, Dr. Lau has helped my and surpassed any medicine I have taken - (believe me I have taken many...).
Each body responds so differently, but folks who I have sent and see him agree with my sentiments.
He is so gentle, thoughtful, tender and has well, a true gift, (not to sound whaa hooo). Try to be open and think you will be pleased. Thank you really can't state my appreciation. We are lucky to have Dr. Lau.

I am a HUGE fan of Dr. Lau's! A year and a half ago, I was in bed sick with a wicked flu. I finally decided to try Dr. Lau, got a treatment and by the next day started to feel significantly better. I have been a fan of Chinese Medicine for many years, and have tried numerous acupuncturists in the Bay Area, but feel Dr. Lau has STRONG medicine. He is very knowledgeable, kind, reminds you of your appointments and follows up to see how you're doing afterward! How many doctors do THAT anymore? I recently had minor (yah right) surgery and Dr. Lau has been working with me to boost my energy so my body can heal. I am feeling a gaining sense of strength and energy thanks to Dr. Lau's care. Check him out!

I love Dr. Lau! I first started seeing Dr. Lau at EA and then have continued to see him at his private practice. I have been a patient of his on and off for 1 year and 8 months. In that time he has helped me with many health problems. One of them being poor circulation, stress release, digestive problems and being unable to sleep at night. He has made huge changes in my health. I tried acupuncture once before when I was very young but it was not very helpful. Dr. Lau knows what he is doing to ensure that you will become a healthier person. On top of being a great Doctor he is gentle, thoughtful, understanding and very kind. I would highly recommend Dr. Lau to anyone to is having any pain or health problems. Acupuncture really does work and Dr. Lau is the best Doctor to go to.
