Alex fitness is a gym come true for the Castro. Finally, a spacious, non-cruisy, clean place to workout.

Equipment is literally top notch (try it), and clientele, while likely to exchange hello's, otherwise keep to themselves. I actually find myself experimenting with new exercises, and enjoying my workouts more because there's no one bearing down on me. At some of the more established gyms like 24HF (Church), it can feel like "do your thing quickly, or move out of the way." At Alex, none of the equipment experiences "bottlenecking". I take my time, get in a few more reps/sets, and leave feeling totally accomplished.

Definitely worth the extra few bucks a month to have a peaceful space free of other people buzzing about, or anxiously staring down my machine. There are no limits on equipment, no lines for water, treadmills, etc. The locker room is equally clean and annoyance-free. Showers are gorgeous and private, and everything is clean and cared for.

I don't miss anything about my old gym. So glad to find this place!

Ok, I am finally ready to review this place.  I have previously worked out at the LA Fitness in Scottsdale, the 24 Hour in Berkeley and the RSF in Berkeley.  Alex is completely different than all three.  Unlike RSF, it is almost never crowded.  Well, at least on the weekends and in the early afternoon.  You have plenty of room to roam and set up circuits for yourself without anybody eyeing your weights, equipment or space.  The weights and the equipment themselves are generally strong.  I prefer the free weights with the polygon edges as opposed to the completely round ones at Alex (just makes a few exercises a tad more difficult...but maybe that's the point?).  The big tower in the side room across from the front desk has the least top notch machinery.  The peg gets stuck and the whole apparatus feels jerky.  All the yellow pieces in the main room are lovely, however.  The padding alone is worth the trip.  I also dig that there are denominations of 35lbs to throw on the machines because I routinely found myself past 25, but not quite up to 45 at other gyms. I do wish there was another squat rack and straight barbells.  At first, I was opposed to the paper thin mats they offer, especially with the rock hard wooden floor in the stretch room, but I've adapted and find them adequate now.  I think my biggest problem with Alex is the downstairs neighbors.  I don't want to throw or drop my weights on the ground, but I also don't want to be constantly worrying about the impact my feet might make on tenants below.  The low ceilings are a bit annoying at times, especially given my height, but that's less the gym and more the space they inherited.  One last rant, the front desk is right next to the door to the locker room.  Pretty much every time I go I have to get uncomfortably close to the sales rep in order to enter the locker room.  I suppose I will get used to it.

Overall, this is a quality gym that takes some getting used to if you are used to bigger spaces.  But the rewards are many.

I have been working out at Alex Fitness for a couple months now.  I grew tired of the massive (and inconsiderate) crowds at Gold's and  24 Hour.

I love it here!  The equipment is top notch, the facility is beautiful, and the staff is very friendly.  I highly recommend taking a tour and giving it a try!

I have to agree with the other reviews.  Alex Fitness is extremely clean, has very friendly staff and is never crowded (a reason I left Golds Castro).  It has all of the equipment I need for a thorough and uninterrupted workout.

The only reason I did not give 5 stars for this review is that the trainers at Alex Fitness can be a bit  territorial with the equipment (another reason I left Golds) when training clients.

I joined this gym because it is not cruisy or overly-social.  I also liked the fact that it was not a corporate gym or part of a big chain.  Alex Fitness has no membership gimmicks, additional hidden costs, or various other up-sells.   Alex, the owner, is a hands-on owner and cares about the facility.  People are courteous and friendly.   Other reviews  call the equipment "top notch" - the equipment is all new and clean and in great working order.  I am very happy to have joined this gym.

I was born and raised in the Bay Area. I have been working-out since high school. I have played organized sports all of my life. I have worked out at gyms all over the world. I have competed in bodybuilding competitions, as well.

In San Francisco, I have been a Gold's mainstay for years. There are many specialized gyms now in San Francisco and I have utilized there services as well.

I have never found a gym that shares the qualities of a chain gym and a specialized gym until now.

With the addition of Alex Fitness, we now have a gym in San Francisco which has quality equipment, focused cliental, well-trained/well-rounded, knowledgeable trainers and staff; and those small but significant touches that make the gym, not just a workout but a daily workout experience.

Alex Fitness is a well-designed, aesthetically pleasing gym with all the amenities. Up-to-date brand new gym equipment, cardio equipment with built-in fans, a clean and a well- kept gym floor and locker-room. In addition, you have free towels for working out and for showering and toiletries and fresh fruit. Lastly, the gym has the best music playing at all times. Alex has taken an old, out-dated gym space and made it special.

So, if you're a person who doesn't want the elbow-to-elbow gym experience from a chain gym or the high-priced specialized gym, Alex Fitness deserves your attention.

Located near public transportation, good restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops and a great nutritional store downstairs, Alex Fitness is a great addition to the neighborhood.

    Thanks Alex,
    Sincerely,
    Vincent Calvarese

The other reviews basically say it all! Brand new, beautiful equipment, with detailed instructions on it. Everything you need to get in a great workout. Friendly staff, and a clean facility that is neither a Zoo or a Roman Bath! And since Alex has a large group of personal trainers working out there with their clients, the vibe is definitely on getting a good, healthy workout in. And it costs around the same as most other gyms!

    Wow, what a transformation.

This used to be the creepy gym that I held my breath when I walked by, like when I was a kid walking past cemeteries.

Now it's basically been gutted and completed redone on the inside, with all-new top-end equipment. The place is gorgeous, and the locker room spotless.  I don't think there's a machine in there that's more than 6 months old.

Alex, the owner has become my personal trainer an he really knows his stuff, as he himself was a professional athlete and successful bodybuilder. I'm lifting in an entirely new way, with an intensity I never thought possible.

You owe it to yourself to check out the swankiest gym in the Castro.

I have been a member of Golds and 24hr Fitness for years but I got so tired of the zoo those places could be at rush hour. It got to the point where it completely turned me off from working out at all.

Then I ran across Alex Fitness. The place is absolutely perfect. One of the best kept secrets in the Castro.
It's in the same building at Books Inc, Dinosaur and Sushi Underground. Everything is brand new, including the locker space and all the equipment. The place feels like one of those high-end gyms you see on tv where trainers are actually happy to help. Alex is the owner. Super nice guy.

    I highly recommend it.

Worked out today with Alex Shula at the beautiful, new, Alex Fitness in the Castro, and even though my ass is tired, I just know it's going to be a great looking, not so tired ass, in a few of months! Thanks Alex-you're awesome!
       I live an hour away, belong to two gyms in my home town(yes 2, but it doesn't mean I always go), yet after today, I feel compelled to go to Alex Fitness. The equipment is state of the art, the place is clean, bright and airy, plus they have many of SF's favorite trainers doing their thing there, so if you need that kind of a push like I do right now, or even if you don't, maybe you just want a change from the "same old gym scene" in the city,  you ought to go give it a look see! (-;
On a side note, my Brother has trained with Alex over the years, and while he had always worked out, after he met Alex, he became a masterpiece physically, and even won two competitions. Alex knows his stuff, and his gym reflects that. I also liked that while I was there, a diverse range of people came in.
I don't know why the other poster had trouble locating the place-web or otherwise, as it came right up when I Googled it. It's also right here on the Yelp page! Hmmmm...

A refreshing new gym in the Castro. No corporate high pressure sales, great equipment, space, location and wonderful staff.  Alex is great too with his vast experience in the fitness industry and friendly, approachable personality. Equipment is new and I have had improved workouts. Treadmill is  so much easier when watching my music videos from my iPhone too.  A great gym in my neighborhood!!!
