Review from Jen S.
we were walking from an event at the fort mason and yelped a nearby place to eat. this place had great reviews so we thought to give it a try. i wish i made my reservations on opentable but i forgot :(
we came on a wednesday evening so the place was not packed at all but the service was still good. its a cute, romantic little restaurant that has two rooms, so can fit small and large groups. my friend and i ordered:
- gambas al ajillo - prob my fave. the shrimp and the sauce was delish! great for bread dipping too
- manchego flambeado - just presentation itself was enough to have me order it cause its on fire!
- empanadillas carne - this was just ok
the plates are small as most tapas places. i think its prob better if you come with a big group b/c you'll get to try more things. we weren't too hungry and probably ate too much bread. overall the food was great -
Review from Leanne S.
What a pleasant surprise!! I had heard from a friend about this place and didn't have high expectations for it. The atmosphere is kinda rustic and maybe a little dated but the food - wow! My friends and I ordered about 6 tapas and shared a paella - absolutely delicious and will be coming back.
We were a bit disappointed in the Sangria though - it seemed either watered down or non-alcoholic... We had two pitchers and didn't feel a thing. Believe me, I'm no alcoholic or anything but I thought something was up...not even a slight buzz from the stuff. Sooo, get some wine! -
Review from Liz T.
This may be the last great restaurant in San Francisco that doesn't require a one-month reservation or a one-hour wait on weekends. Alegrias is homey, rustic, and unpretentious--and it does tapas and paellas very well.
Despite that I live near Zarzuela (another good tapas bar)...
Despite that Alegrias is in the Marina (which often precedes "douchebag")...
Despite its inattentive European service...
Despite its stale house bread...
Alegrias is still my favorite Spanish restaurant in SF. I came here a year ago, and I couldn't run back fast enough. My girl friends and I began our girls' night out here last Friday. We enjoyed ten tapas (two small plates a person is a good rule of thumb), a pan of paella, and two pitchers of sangria. Delicious beginning to a delectable night!
I call five of the plates my favorites here, and two of them don't even have meat (this is very unlike me). The Manchego cheese flambed with brandy was literally on fire--I loved the fried cheese paired with the sweet spirit. The fried potatoes tossed with alioli sauce was a light take on a classic dish. My favorite of the favorites must have been the chorizo, potato, and caramelized onion omelette. I adore eggs in every form, and this was no exception--fluffy, layered, savory, sweet! I also couldn't get enough of the sauteed prawns (I even looked up the recipe for this--so easy yet so nommy!) and the crab cakes with jalapeno sauce. I could've easily had my own portion of these and finished them like a boss.
The paella deserves its own paragraph. It was big and glorious--a sizzling pan with a mountain of seafood, chorizo, and chicken on an ocean of saffron rice. Don't get too many tapas if you order the paella--it will fill you up and knock you out before the check even comes. While this isn't the best paella I've ever had, it hits the spot like a seafood risotto when you have non-Asian rice cravings.
Like every restaurant, there were a few things on the menu that I could have lived without and saved money on. The beef turnovers were unremarkable, and the stewed rabbit was bony. This doesn't mean that I left my share, though--I still ate it while I smacked my lips!
We didn't have room for dessert, but I ordered a coffee. Dinner ended at 9pm and we planned to be out until 2am, so I had to have a strong capuccino or embrace sleep. The capuccino was the best decision I made that night and the best coffee I've drank outside of Italy, and it kept me wired until 3am. I danced my way home on foot after I outlasted the lights of MatrixFillmore.
I hope it's not another year before I return here. Delicioso! Otra vez! -

It's not everyday we go out for Spanish (not Mexican, yes there is a difference folks) food so this was a treat. Parking was a breeze in the parking garage across the street and once in, we were promptly seated, we had reservations. From the outside, it doesn't look like much but don't let that fool you. It's a small restaurant consisting of two small but quaint rooms. Lots of pictures on the walls, it definitely reminded me of the restaurants in Spain. On our visit, this place was packed.
Our server was Laureano and he was pretty much on top of it the whole time. We were able to try a bunch of different things and for the most part, everything was good to excellent.
2 Pitchers of Sangria: Delicious $40.00
2 Ensalada de Casa; Average salad $13.00
1 Jamon Bellota: Spanish Ham, you can't go wrong $14.95
1 Gambas al Ajillo: OMG, delish Shrimp $9.95
1 Mejillones Alegria: Steamed mussels, not a fan but I tried them, not bad $9.95
1 Espinacas Catalana: Spinach, I skipped this dish $7.50
1 Calamares Fritos: Fried Calamari, you can't go wrong $9.95
1 Patatas Alioli: These reminded me of tater tots and that dip..DELISH $6.95
1 Tortilla Chorizo: I JOCK chorizo so this kept me smiling $9.95
1 Paella Valenciana: The obligatory Paella, definitely hit the spot $21.95
1 Setas Al Ajillo: Mushrooms creep me out so hell no I didn't try these $7.95
2 Empanadillas Carne: Beef empanadas, they were good but not the best I've had $15.90
1 Rabo de Toro: Spanish Oxtail, dang that beef was so tender, YUM $8.25
The food didn't take long to come out and their timing was perfect. It sounds like a lot but it's all tapas style. It was nice to be able to try so many different choices without feeling stuffed. We were pleasantly full along with a nice buzz. Our group was definitely alegre (happy) at Alegrias. We skipped dessert but will definitely be back.

This is a great place for a date. It's dim and romantic with decent Spanish food. The service was excellent but we were there early on a Saturday evening and were one of the only patrons there. Overall not wowed by the food but not disappointed. If I was going for romance I would pick this place. Otherwise I'd rather go to Zarzuela or Lalola.

Since I live in the neighborhood, might as well try this place. I saw a few good reviews and thought why not.
Very quint, delicate, intimate setting. Very cute romantic ambiance. We were seated immediately and ordered sangria cause yelp said it was good. (Again-Yelp is right!)
Dinner (small plates so order lots):
-Bocadillos de Cangrejo - Crab cakes served with a mild creamy jalapeño sauce (really small) Great sauce though!
-Paella a la Marinera - Classic saffron flavored Spanish rice with seafood (amazing! Great Paella) Very generous with the seafood and packed with great flavors!
-Red peppers stuffed with Lamb - I don't know the name of this dish but I heard amazing things about it. It was no longer on the menu but was featured as a special. So I had to order it. SO WORTH IT! One order only came out with three peppers. I ordered an extra because it was so good! I also asked for more bread to wipe up the sauce. DELICIOUS!
-Sangria is a must. Comes in a pitcher and was gone by the time food hit the table :)
Great experience here! -

I am so in love with this place. I'm truly glad that my husband enjoyed the tapas here as well. My goal: To introduce him to the world through cuisine. And that, I accomplished here.
We were treated really well by the staff from beginning to end. There was not one time where we found ourselves needing them or try to get their attention. It was nice to have our orders arrive with perfect timing, one after another, soon as our plates were almost done.
We ordered four hot tapas: Patatas (potatoes with aioli), calamares with aioli, steamed mussels and the crab cakes. Every plate was absolutely deeelish. My favorite was the fried potatoes and the mussels. I know it sounds so simple but believe me when I say that the flavor was just perfect. The chef has magic hands.
My husband and I then shared a squid-ink paella entree. It was OMG good. I still cannot believe how much I loved the paella. I am definitely not a paella person, but because of this particular dish, I am now.
On to the desserts. Yay! I had the panqueque (I love saying it, "pon ke ke"). It was a heavenly caramel sauce rolled in a very thin crepe. I practically had a food-gasm when I took my first bite. Perfect with the cup of coffee I had.
From service to food to flavor, I am an absolute fan. I cannot wait to return!!! -

Impromptu birthday dinner for a couple of months back but there were quite accommodating!
It wasn't too busy when we entered the restaurant and definitely gives you an upscale romantic mood immediately. Alegrias is a quiet setting with many tiny tables all around. My date and I sat there for quite some time chatting and enjoying each other without any rush or pressure.
We ordered a full bottle of Rioja (which was beautiful to its last drop), Manchego Flambeado (Manchego flambe'd with Brandy), steamed mussels, and a Paella a la Marinera (Seafood Spanish rice).
The Manchego was nicely done and had strong flavors with the brandy and not bitter at all which was a big plus.
The Steamed mussels were salivating and perfectly prepared, robust and full of garlic flavors. Delicious.
The Paella was not overdrenched in sauce, had fresh seafood and came burning warm.
Mmm! I couldn't want but to try more but I didn't have enough space for any more food. We finished out bottle of wine and went on our way.
The place is a little bit out of the way for me, but definitely romantic and quiet. -
Review from Nga C.
Made reservations to eat dinner here with Mr. Face for an early birthday dinner when I found out that paella is his favorite dish. It was between this and one other Spanish restaurant in the city... this won by default because they take reservations. I changed the reservations around a couple of times worrying about being late. It ended up not making any difference... the place was pretty empty for a Friday night at 7pm. It kinda worried me...
We were greeted upon walking in and asked if we wanted to sit in the front or back part of the dining room. We opted for the back and were seated by a group of 4 having a girls' night, which ended up being not too great for us because we couldn't have all that much of a conversation due to them talking a lot and quite loud. I can't really blame them, but it could have been prevented since most of the restaurant was empty.
The Face and I started with ordering the Paella a la Valenciana con Chorizo Español and a pitcher of red Sangria... figured it would be better than by the glass at $5.50. I'm not much of a drinker of anything, so I maybe had the equivalent of 1 glass (Sir Face kept pouring more in my glass even though I never even got halfway) while he had most of the rest.
After some time and bread, we also ordered the beef empanadillas and the patatas bravas. The empanadillas were delicious. The flavor was great and the barely crisp shell was made very well. One thing that can probably change, though, is that the center was just warm. The potatoes were good, but seemed to be missing just a little something... a tad more salt, maybe some more aioli... I was quite excited when the paella came out as I've never had it before. The server gave us clean plates and served the paella to us too. Even after all that... we still got more bread and I noticed that he went for a new plate for the bread as well. It wasn't necessary, but a nice touch. It was pretty good, but I don't care too much for mussels or clams... or calamari if it isn't fried. The chorizo was also a little on the dry side.
Overall, great meal (despite the girls we sat next to) and great service. Someone always stopped by to check on us throughout the meal. The best part? Because I mentioned that it was for his birthday, we got a comped dessert of the flan. I didn't even notice it until the server was right behind Mr. Face lighting the candle... haha. I wouldn't mind coming by again in the future. -

Cool spot for a quiet adult dinner. Had the house salad, crab cakes and paella with seafood, chicken and chorizo. Perfect for two. Sangria was great as well (had a pitcher). Total bill was $75 after tax and tip. Worth a repeat visit. The smells from the kitchen must mean there are other things on the menu that are just as tasty. And dessert sounded worthwhile had we skipped a serving of dinner.

Great Spanish restaurant! The food tastes just like the food the folks used to make. Recommend sharing a paella (plenty for two) and if you're hungry, enjoy tapas and dessert. Nice setting and friendly service.

I went here because the Argentinian knows the owner, Cesar. He ordered in Spanish so I have no idea what I was getting into but food and drink just kept coming and I kept eating.
Saturday night and the restaurant was busy but not so packed that we felt rushed. Cesar told us that business was insane after they appeared on Check, Please but it's leveling out with occasional spikes when their episode airs. Cesar is absolutely charming and was a real treat to speak to. The darling caricature drawings of girls on the wall, all were done by his daughter. She's a lucky girl because her father speaks very proudly of her as well as his son, who is also an artist.
The waiters were attentive and accommodating, the food was excellent, and the ambiance was lovely. Hopefully when I come back the next time, boquerones will be back on the menu. Yum! -

Great ambience and service.
If you have kids, request to be seated in the back room.
Food is delicious, but I feel the paella is a bit salty. Try the squid ink paella! They only have red Sangria, but it's still good. Their red wine-by-the-glass is somewhat limited to 3 choices.
For a party of 5, we ordered 6-7 tapas and 2 paellas, which amounts to about $35-40/person including drinks, which isn't too bad. Their pulpo or octopus is seasonal, but I heard good things about it; may need to come back again. I just wish they would add a few more tapas items. -

I was sooo disappointed that we had our anniversary dinner here. I expected it to be booming and even anticipated having to wait to get in, but instead it was so quiet in the middle dining room by the bar--everyone was put here, I think 3 tables had diners--that the sound of dishes and glasses clattering at the bar was unnerving. We ordered garlic shrimp, a favorite of ours, and it was tasteless. It did have garlic in it, but we couldn't taste it. The little red peppers stuffed with lamb were also tasteless and half-cold to boot. And the patatas with aioli were the oddest I've ever had--tiny little squares, homefries basically, that were tossed with the sauce (I guess so no need to dip.) The sangria was also disappointing; I didn't even finish it. I did feel they kept trying to get us to order more, but my instincts from the beginning were to try a few dishes and then order more if we liked them. We didn't like them, so we left with a light bill and a lot of disappointment. In fact, it was so bad that we decided to go out again the next night and make THAT our anniversary dinner. Also, though the walls are decorated in a charming manner, the chair covers seem tired and nothing is going to fix that limp atmosphere.

We came to Alegria's to celebrate a friend's birthday. On a Thursday night, I was expecting it to be packed but it wasn't too busy. It's the perfect place for a date-night or a quiet dinner and last night there were a lot of couples there. We felt bad because we're a bit of a rowdy bunch when we all get together and we didn't want to ruin their dinner, haha.
Alegria's serves tapas style. We were served bread for starters and they had extra virgin olive oil for dipping. We ordered:
-Patatas Alioli; fried potatoes in an aioli sauce, really crispy and the sauce was delicious
-Bocadillos de Cangrejo; crabcakes in a creamy jalapeno sauce, melt-in- your-mouth good!
-Tortilla a La Espanola; potato and carmelized onion omelette, this was our favorite of the two omelettes, the sauce on top is awesome
-Tortilla de Chorizo; potato, carmelized onion, and chorizo omelette
-Manchego Flambeado; cheese flambe with brandy, great presentation and the cheese was really melty and creamy
-Gambas al Ajillo; shrimp in a garlic and wine sauce, garlic and wine sauce was tasty and perfect for dipping with the bread
We all shared the tapas and our favorites were the patatas alioli, bocadillos de cangrejo, and the gambas al ajillo. We did like both of the omelettes but the tortilla de chorizo, while pretty good, was a bit of an overkill. The crabcakes were definitely one of the best I've had and I'd recommend ordering a couple plates because they only come in two's.
For dessert we shared the panqueques de manzana and some kind of cake with a raspberry sauce but I can't remember what it's called. The panqueques were sweet and you could really taste the rum and the apple.
Service was great! Our server was very knowledgeable, attentive and explained everything on the menu.
Alegria's is a great for sharing and trying different tapas. I definitely want to come back for a date-night!Listed in: Date-night!

I went here a few weeks ago with a group of friends. I was a little dubious at the outset -- the restaurant is on Lombard (tourist trap), the decor is a bit stuffy and outdated, and, there was hardly anyone in the restaurant!
Fortunately the food spoke for itself. I got two tapas.
1) Bocadillos de Cangrejo - ie crab cakes in a creamy jalapeno sauce. This was nothing too special but the sauce had a nice kick
2) Espinacas a la Catalana - ie spinach sauteed with garlic, apples, raisins, and pine nuts -- WOW, this was amazing. The flavors together were awesome, I've never had anything like this before and I keep meaning to re-create it in my own kitchen!
I probably won't go out of my way to go back, but the food was good, so if you're in the area and in the mood for tapas, give it a try. -

The place is so cute! The decor is gorgeous! We were a group about 6-7 and they got a table for us really quickly. The paella is one of the best paella I have tasted. Besides being a loud, drunk, obnoxious group they were very catering and understanding. Everything I tasted was YUMS!

Alegrias stole my virginity for tapas. Three years ago, I had my very first tapa dish here and I thought it was the best thing ever.
It was Eugenia G.'s birthday, in which, she held a small and intimate celebration at this cozy restaurant. Being clueless (at the time) to this cuisine, I was open to anything on the menu. A few members from the party did the ordering and I was having much pleasure tasting each dish that was brought to our table.
Since then, I did venture out to try other tapa restaurants. Every now and then I would even come back to Alegrias for more rounds of their dishes but after trying new places, I've come to realized that Alegrias is good but not great.
They have a moderate selection of cold and hot tapas, and they also serve entrees. I usually order a few tapa dishes, followed by a paella to share.
Some of my all time favorites from their menu:
- Jamon Serrano: Imported Spanish cured ham
- Cazuela de Queso de Cabra: Oven baked goat cheese on a bed of red sauce
- Calamares Fritos con Alioli: Fried calamares served with alioli sauce
- Paella a la Valenciana: Classic saffron flavored Spanish rice with chicken and seafood
I guess it's true when they say "You will always find new interests, but you'll never forget your first." -

My boyfriend was craving for a good paella, so I looked on yelp and came across this place. Overall, it was quite dead and very quiet but it could possibly be a nice place for a date.
We ordered the sangria, which I loved... Mmm just thinking about it makes my mouth water. We ordered the crab cakes which I thought was pretty good but the bf said it would have been better if they put more crab in it. We also ordered their potatoes... They were soooo good. I think I engulfed the whole plate by myself =) We also ordered the seafood paella, which came in a pretty huge portion. It was ok, nothing too special.
So overall, this place was ok... I would definitely go back for the potatoes and sangria =) This place is good for groups because it's tapa style and if you go in a group you can order a variety of things on the menu to try -

A group of 5 of us ate here on a really busy Sunday night when most restaurants simply required a very long wait. We were in the area and decided that tapas sounded good and as Alegrias got good reviews we went for it.
On entering we were not really in love with the feel of the place as it is somewhat dated but the service, cleanliness and food proved to be fantastic.
We got a good spread of tapas including garlic shrimp, sheep cheese, the tortilla, asparagus and a few other things. Since we were pretty hungry with thought that adding a paella to our order would help. Usually the paella at Spanish restuarants tends to have rice that is undercooked or overcooked, or the seafood doesn't seem fresh, however at Alegrias that was not the case. While the paella is not necessarily exactly what you might find in a fine restaurant in Spain, it is certainly very good. In fact it may be one of the best ones I have had in the US.
We also got some Spanish wine which our waiter recommended and it was truly good. In order to finish out our great dinner we got a nice spread of desserts. The flan, pancakes with apples, pancakes with dulce de leche and some chocolate cake. The flan was pretty good but everything else was just average so perhaps save your dessert appetite for another establishment.
So all in all if you are looking for a carefully prepared tapas dinner with great ingredients don't hesitate to come to this restaurant. -

I am so happy I stumbled upon this restaurant while looking for a bite to eat with some friends. We ended up ordering a bunch of tapas and a couple pitchers of sangria to share. Everything we got was delicious, I especially loved the baked goat cheese. 8 different tapas for 4 hungry people was plenty of food and not too expensive. I've had a hard time finding a tapas restaurant that resembles those in Spain, but Alegias definitely hit the spot.

The best sangria I've had so far! Don't make the mistake of ordering a glass. They offer pitchers and I highly recommend that.
To eat - we ordered the chorizo omelet, manchego cheese (on fire), crab cakes and olives. All the tapas were fantastic!
Definitely coming back again! One of my fav tapas places! -

What did coach used to say -- "let your game speak for itself"?
Alegrias has got game. I was shocked to find such great food located on Lombard St (aka the 101 highway). Their Spanish cuisine is terrific and hole-in-the wall atmosphere was refreshing. This no-frills dining experience is all about killer tapas (and paella!) and wastes no time trying to impress via ornate decor or posh anything. Like I said... refreshing.
I have had the paella and a slew of tapas. The gambas, paella and the tortilla were all memorable, but everything was pretty delicious. A new neighborhood favorite for sure! -

The tapas was good, but not amazing. We enjoyed the Spanish ham, clams and snails, and sea bass special. The paella, calamari and sangria were just "ok."
The atmosphere is old school and casual, service was fine. I really just picked this place, because we felt like tapas and it's conveniently located in the Marina to hang out afterwards. -

I tried this restaurant a couple of weeks ago. The food is good and reasonable and the service is excellent. It's a fairly big place with another room in the back for private parties. We dined there on a Monday, so the place was not that busy. It was intimate, quiet and a little romantic.
Located in the Marina district, it's difficult to find street parking but the good thing is there is a garage right across the street (convenient)! -
Review from Janice T.
Food was very nice and selection was fun. I like how all the dishes were pretty consistent. Everything was presented very well. The four of us ate a little of everything and spent two hours chatting away on Friday night. Service was nice. No one rushed us to get out and they helped us change plates and refilled our glasses frequently.
Food:
Jamon-thin slices of delight. Tasted smokey and just so condensed with pork smell and flavor. Delicious.
Frogs Leg-three pieces of lightly fried frog legs. One was too dry and two were cooked alright. Looks good, but the salad bedding definitely collected a lot of the left over oil.
Bocadillos de Cangrejo-Crab cakes. Tasty. Creamy jalapeno sauce tasted great with the free bread.
Empanadillas de Carne-Fried perfectly, but filling was a little like sloppy joe.
Callos a la Madrileña-(tripe with tomatoe). I liked this dish because I never tried it before, but it was good. Tripe was soft and tomatoe gave it an acidic punch.
Calamares Fritos con Alioli-a little bland. Nothing special. I don't recommend it.
Patatas Alioli-fried potatoes. Tasty. This one is worth trying.
Paella de Verduras-full of seafood. Not bad. But if you are going with a group, probably need to order it as a filler...
Experience was good and I always enjoy little dishes so I can eat more variety. I would recommend this place if you are interested in tapas. And yes, the sangria was also tasty. -

Found this on yelp. Was looking for something to eat after work. It's right off Lombard and easy to find. When we entered I thought it was very quiet. There were only a few other couples in the joint.
We were seated promptly.
We decided on a selection of tapas instead of a main course. The tapas we chose were: the assortment of cheese ( I highly suggest this, it was a good amount of cheese for two people, we got three different kinds and it was all new to me and my boyfriend! ), We also tried the snails & clams in red sauce, very good and tender! Loved the flavor of the clams and the sauce was great to use for dipping our bread in afterwards. We had the rabbit stew tapas also, which was a little bone-y but very very good. I loved the flavors in the stew.
I thought all of our food was very flavor full and delicious!
Lastly, we had the flan for dessert. I love flan, but it was similar to any place you'd get flan at..
I wish I would of tried the paella. -

This is where M took me for our first date. Being half Spanish, he should know what he's doing. Yet, being a little ob-nob foodie, I still had lingering doubt about this man.
Until I tried the dishes, of course.
It was a beautiful experience. Warm, earthy, simple, and delicious. I felt like I was in some country side home in the Spanish hills. They took me to a different world. And poof, I'm a regular.
We order the same dishes every time. Croquetas fried to perfection with the most amazing creamy jalapeno sauce. Juicy, meaty empanadillas de carne. Tortilla a la Espanola was fluffy and filling. The stuffed peppers was much better than anywhere else I've tried.
Love love love this place. It is intimate, warm, with food how your never-had Spanish mama would make.
And I will forever be the Duchess of this place. That's right! -

I am never disappointed after dining here at Alegrias; I leave with a smile and a full belly every time. From the attention to detail in the decor, the hospitable staff, delicious items, to the casual / cozy / romantic atmosphere - this place is a favorite of mine.
The menu is extensive and pretty authentic in its offerings. For those of you who have limited/stubborn ordering patterns, this place will definitely open up your eyes to try something new.
Some of my favorite dishes are:
-Tortilla de Chorizo
-Gambas al Ajillo
-Pulpo a la Gallega -

I've never had Spanish food until I ate at this restaurant and I'm hooked! The meat that they use is incredible and the service is relatively fast. All the people who work there are really nice and the ambiance is great. It's a good place to have an intimate dinner with friends and family or go out on a date. But the great thing is that you don't have to dress up to go there. My favorite dishes there (I forget the Spanish names) are the tripe, chorizo, and paella. What I like about Alegrias is that it's more authentic than some of the other Spanish restaurants that I've been to. Instead of trying to cater to people who are used to California cuisine, Alegrias seems to stay true to Spanish cuisine which makes eating there not only more enjoyable, but educational to people who have never been to Spain. When I want to eat out in San Francisco, Alegrias is one of my go-to places.

Review from Rosalynn T.
San Francisco, CA
Awful! The only thing that was kinda okay about the place was the sangria. The food was lacking. Greasy, but lacking flavor (unless you count the salt). Potatoes brava was a mess. The potato texture was as if you left them under a heat lamp before adding the sauce and serve. Save your money and go to any of the other tapas places in the city.
Awful! Save yourself the grief and avoid at all costs!
