I love Alec's Shoes and just wish I lived closer.
LARGE selection. GREAT prices. GREAT BRANDs. Good looking styles ( I like a classical shoe)THEY WAIT ON YOU -
This is the old fashioned shoe store of my youth - thank goodness they are here. It is terrible trying to get service at other places. Alec's service is fantastic, even when they are mobbed like during a sale or Christmas, the last two times we visited. They have an Army of mostly guys ready to find shoes for you or gently suggest something that might work.
Not as deep in the women's department but still good, they found dress shoes for me - I am tall with a large, wide foot and often have to buy men's shoes- plus I buy here for my sons. -

Still the most knowledgeable shoe store that I will ever shop at, with an extensive bargain "basement".
A bad experience on a busy Saturday - sent me home with the wrong size shoes. The hours of operation did not allow me to exchange the shoes in a timely, so ended up ordering online...
Still recommend Alec's forever, but when it is busy - double check your purchase!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Ryan D.
So... I have a lot of memories when it comes to this store.
Memories that were so strong, when it came time for me to buy some shoes while I was home on my Christmas break, I kind of insisted that I do it here. I actually remember when Alec's was a much smaller operation, down the street and around the corner from where it is now. It's a much bigger store, and it's a safe bet that if you're a downtown Nashua junkie like I am, you've been to this store for at least one pair of shoes.
Most of the people who work here are the same people who worked here when I was 6 years old. There's something about that that's reassuring to me. Also, Mrs. Haggerty still works there, so I spent a great deal of my time here having an enjoyable conversation with her. Really, the staff here is amazing. You can ask them anything and they are going to sincerely do there best to try and help you.
I spent most of my recent trip in the upstairs clearance area. The shoes here aren't typically cheap, but are pretty reasonably priced regardless. I was happy just not to be paying NYC sales tax. I ended up settling on a pair of red Nikes (my mother insists they are "gay shoes" but everyone else I asked did not share this opinion). At $60 bucks, I thought that was a pretty great deal. There was a lot of choices, even on sale.
If you need shoes and you live in Nashua, buy them here. Period. -

Had a phenomenal experience here. I am always on my feet and needed a good shoe. The gentleman that helped me measured me and suggested the brand "Keen" as a great option. After a few weeks of wearing these shoes I could not be happier! Thank you for a great experience!

Great for sneakers, casual shoes, flip flops, boots
The people who work here are professionals; they have been here for ever and they know what they are doing.
I love that they carry Dansko, Hunter, Nike, UGG, Reef

"Where Al Bundy works!"
Well, he would if he was real. But THIS place is real, and filled with caring professionals that know more about feet & footwear than most podiatrists I've met. I was interviewing doctors a few years ago, looking at my options for plantar fasciitis surgeries, when a friend mentioned Alec's. In no time flat (or arched, for that matter! sorry...) they had me properly measured & fitted for shoes that would correct everything wrong with my gait just-so. The moment I put on that first pair of the-perfect-shoe-for-my-feet in my-perfect-size, my tootsies breathed a huge sigh of relief, and my p/f pain was GONE in days! THANK YOU ALEC'S!!!!
Their selection is immense, and their prices are not much higher than the best deals you'll find on-line. But give 'em some love & your business, 'cause every city NEEDS at least ONE true old-fashioned shoe store like this where they really care & can fit you properly. No, more than fit you; PRESCRIBE the exact shoe your foot needs in order to be happy & healthy, that's more like it.
Closed Mondays. Meters on Main Street or hunt for small lots out back to the West. -
Review from Chris C.
Family owned, amazing range of selections, prices as cheap or cheaper than big stores and super helpful staff. So how can you go wrong?
This is what all shoe stores should be. They seemingly carry every brand and every style you could imagine. They have steel toed workboots, cowboy boots, super high end dress shoes, sneakers, casual shoes and everything else you can put on your feet. The only thing that I don't care for is the strange hours they operate with. I mean can't you be open late at least one night a week?Listed in: Nashua Area

Oh my goodness, I love this place.
I confess that I have wide, hard to fit feet. I am on my feet all day for my job, and I used to go home with horribly sore feet. My mom (who also has hard to fit feet, it must be genetic) told me to try this store. I went there for the first time last June and came home with 4 pairs of shoes -- FOUR -- when usually I go in a store and come out with nothing, or with something that doesn't fit properly but I had to have a pair of shoes and I made do. Whenever possible, I would wear sneakers.
So now I go to Alec's, and I have shoes like other grown-ups. When the school year started, my school district came out with a new dress policy that we could no longer wear sneakers to work. I went to Alec's and said, "I need a pair of ultra comfortable shoes that are dressy enough for the workplace." They pulled out a bunch of choices for me, and I went home with several pairs of shoes. I wear them every day. They are so comfortable that I sometimes forget to take them off when I get home.
They have the selection that no one else has in this area -- they also have very knowledgeable and helpful service people. I drive an hour to get to this store, and it's worth it. -

Not the widest selection of shoes . They do keep a good range of Clarks, UGGs, Born. I did not see many Dansko shoes. Prices are better than most stores even with a sale. Service is excellent. They took an order for a pair of shoes on phone for me and although it was not in stock, and had it specially shipped within a few days. Although it is located on Main street there is plenty of parking in the back.
Will definitely be my first shoe stop. -

I said "I am an over-pronator and need new sneakers" and they brought a couple options to me. I am a discount shopper- but my feet have never felt so good, so I will be paying the full price for shoes from now on!

Check upstairs first for clearance deals. Then go downstairs and get the best service you've ever had in a shoe store. They work from back in the day when Al Bundy put your shoes on for you.
Join the shoe club. For either $10 or $20 a week, you get an instant credit of $100 or $200. Pay each week for 10 weeks. Its like free credit. -

Great store! Wide selection of shoes for whatever you may be looking for, lots of "name brands" at good prices. Huge clearance section upstairs! I didn't purchase anything, but they seem like a real old shoe store...hope to go back!

Nashua, NH
Easily the best selection in Nashua, NH. It's not like you'll find anything too elite but this is as good as we get up here.
As far as the prices being too high, nonsense. You get what you pay for.
- one star for clutter and a selection that doesn't appeal to me. But if you are a middle aged moderately well-dressed business man you'll be in heaven. -
Review from David B.
Hurrah for Alec's Shoes! It is SO nice to see a thriving independent in a nation of cookie cutter chains. The staff is friendly, efficient, and know how to steer you to the right product for your needs and taste. The prices are competitive with the big boys. There selection of men's shoes is HUGE, as good as you'll find in the shoe mecca of Nordstroms.
So, bag the big box and travel down Main Street and plunk your money on the counter of this fine [independent] establishment. -

A Nashua staple! I think I got my first pair of shoes here decades ago. Still the best place to go for shoes and customer service.

My review probably won't tell you anything the others haven't, but I'm so in love with Alec's that I just need to share.
I have been shopping at Alec's for the last 20 years, and have never, ever been disappointed. In fact, I felt a warm fuzzy in my heart to see that the same woman who helped my mother buy me tap shoes when I was 4 was there today.
The prices are reasonable, and the service is always excellent, no matter how busy they are. The sales people really know their stuff, and won't let you walk out of the store with a shoe that's not right for you. I can walk in and say, "Hey, I have narrow feet, messed up hips, and have to walk a lot. What do you have that I can wear to work?" And they'll pull out just what I need. Every time.
When I think of all the money I've wasted thinking I can save money buy getting shoes at Payless, only to wear them twice and put them in my shoe graveyard because they don't fit right. Shoulda gone to Alec's!
Just today, when it was as busy as I have ever seen it, the man who was helping me kindly gave me 10% off some boots I was thinking of getting because they were a little scuffed. And I really enjoy watching them fit kids with new shoes. And get balloons.
I live out of the area now, but always try to buy my shoes here. Go for it, your feet will thank you. -

One of the biggest reasons that I love this place is because they have held on to that traditional shoe store operation; They will get what you need and undo the shoes, fit them on you, and even do up the laces. It may seem silly, but it's just so nice to see a Main Street American business that still runs the old way.
That being said, that's where the "old time" stops. They have the latest brands and styles of athletic shoes, sandles, boots, heels, flats, and kids' shoes for decent prices. I have bought my ladies' Saucony sneakers here for below the suggested retail price for over a decade. I still have to stop in when I go back to visit my folks. They have a great second floor with specials and clearance items, as well as bags and purses. They sell socks, inserts, shoe polish, and even deodorizer items.
It's really the best service you will ever get for your family, and I hope to return here for many years to come. -

I lived in Nashua for 3 years and still go back here when I'm in the area. I spend almost all of my time upstairs in the sale area (where they also sell clothing). The customer service is top-notch. There are many helpful employees who actually offer to put things back on the shelves for you if you don't want them. You don't find this kind of service at too many places these days. The staff is helpful and friendly but not pushy. I have bought a number of items of running clothing over the years and found the prices to be great. You can find good deals on shoes in the sale area but obviously the sizes are limited. This is a great local business and we need to support these kinds of stores! Shop for shoes at Alec's and I don't think you'll be disappointed. But don't overlook the clothing and accessories upstairs either.

Review from Suzanne G.
Dunstable, MA
This is the place I used to bring my son for back-to-school shoes back in the day when he was in parochial school and needed some basic oxfords. Then my husband started wearing Bostonian wing-tips, with heels and soles that can be repaired by a cobbler, not the kind of shoes that have faux stitches but are really glued on. Imagine, not throwing out one's shoes when they begin to wear! Alec's is awesome.
The store is indeed a trip down memory lane in terms of customer service. I've been fitted for good walking shoes (I do the Komen 3-day walk, 60 miles of actual walk and a million miles of training!) and they are brilliant. The sales crew is knowledgable and friendly; the place is always bustling! The upstairs sales area is good; hubby got some Timberland boots for a fraction of the original cost.
Actually downtown Nashua is all pretty good. They've been able to rejuvenate the city in the way that Lowell has not. -
Review from Uncle A.
Pepperell, MA
Why shop anywhere else for shoes? When I need shoes, boots, sandals or even those reef-bootie things, the FIRST place I head for is Alec's shoes. I have a wide foot and I know the folks at Alec's will help me find what I need.
Who knew that shopping for shoes could be so easy? If you want old fashioned shoe salesperson expertise and handling with kid gloves, Alec's is your place.
UPDATE: 12/30/11 Another Alec's-approver here mentioned "not the widest selection" or something like that...and that made me laugh. I'm just home from another wonderful Alec's-experience where I was almost overwhelmed by the selection! To each his own, eh? LOL! -

Redundent, I know but Alec's is just that good. Great selection good prices and plenty of service. I always walk out with two or three pairs of business shoes, sneakers, boots, hiking boots, tevas, etc. etc. Even have pink cowgirl boots for the girl with style. The bargain place upstairs is huge and worth checking out.
Just for the record, I don't work for Alec's, just a huge fan of quality, price, and service.
A hidden gem that is worth the drive to downtown Nashua. Not to mention it's right next to my favorite restaurant Surf! -

I've been a customer of Alec's for over 20 years!! As a kid, my mother was always a member of the shoe club and it's a great deal! I still look forward to driving back up to Nashua to pick up shoes at Alec's. The customer service is top notch!!!

Alec's is like an old fashion shoe store with all the current styles. Expect to be helped, seated, and your foot measured. After you select the style shoe that your looking for, they'll go in the back and find your size. They have a huge selection, and a clearence section upstairs. I bought a pair of Converse Jack Purcells for $41, they had low "Chucks" for $32, Hi-top Chucks for $35.

Review from Linda O.
Jamaica Plain, MA
People who say the prices are too high here are a bit wacky -- I went to Alec's last night and nearly every shoe in the store has a base price BELOW RETAIL - closer to, even below in some cases, the prices you would find from online retailers. You won't find "cheap" Payless-esque shoe brands here - this isn't a discount big box store. They carry Vibram, Dansko, Merrell, Naot, etc. - quality brands. I was so excited because they had the new Vibram Bikila's in stock so I drove from MA to go there. The sales staff is so nice - everyone we encountered was helpful, professional and kind. One sales woman put up with me trying on the same two pairs of shoes in different sizes for ten or fifteen minutes while I tried to decide what size was best - offering support and guidance as I tried to choose. I think it is well worth the drive from the greater Boston area because the service you get is far better than anything I have experienced here in MA .
