Review from Tony S.
Port St Lucie, FL
Best espresso style coffee I've had since moving to the East Coast (CT not NYC). Agree with Leonard T that its not quite as good as Philz in SF but Philz does a variety of roasts - Aldos does one, and its dark baby. I like it that way so I'm cool.
The roaster is in the front window and we got there early in the morning to see the beans come pouring out and coffee scented steam wafting everywhere. Aldo is a piece of work -- he takes his coffee pretty seriously and doesn't smile a hell of a lot. Reminded me of a Coffee version of the Soup Nazi. But its all part of the charm. Wait can be long as he did everything himself, and took his sweet time about it, but that's the European way - the line is as much of a social occasion as a wait. Don't expect drive through speed- go across the road for that. Also has excellent biscotti for dipping into your macchiato. -

I love coffee. I roast my own beans and use a French Press. Hardly a creditential for a valid review but hear me out on this as i feel you might agree.
Despite the raving reviews, Aldo's is aweful. The place is in a state of filth and decline. Not sure if the weaselish wannabe Barista is renovating the place but food and cleanliness are vital. Surrounded by an enormous amount of flies, paint chips, dust, and spent coffee grains. I couldn't help but think that maybe the coffee beans covering the counters and floor were possibly a poor attempt at rustic decor rather than careless inventory control. This bird making a latte just looked smelly and untidy, much like his place. And...the prices! Charging Starbucks prices for cup of a Sanka clone. Foowey! -

2 bags of biscotti, 2 lattes = $35. SAY WHAT?! of course at that point, you are in line and on a mini-vacation so you cooly open your wallet and pay the woman so you do'nt seem like you are some filthy bum.
But the filthy bum in me made me sit here and eat a biscotti with my latte (hence my pic) to ensure my $35 was well spent. Was it well spent you ask? Well, it was spent...not so well. The latte was decent, it didnt blow my socks off or anything, and the biscotti was the perfect crisp to chewy ratio. The highlight of the biscotti is the use of chocolate - it covered at least 50% of the cookie. whereas other biscottis have 15% max coverage of chocolate to plain side.
Who knew the tastiness of biscotti can be so technical? well when you are filthy bum such as I, chocolate to plain ratio is very important. -

I really wanted this to be a 5* review, but sadly, as my trusty yelp brethren have wisely said before me, theses beans are burnt beyond recognition. They are pitch black and they taste it. Gone are the alluring and subtle coffee notes, and instead it's just a flat, burnt taste. A shame, given that the ecclectic space, the ecclectic owner, and the amazing scone caused me to want to love this spot. I wouldn't return. If you're a serious coffee drinker, I recommend D'Latte, just down the street and around the corner on Main. If you do give this spot a whirl, do yourself a favor and get a scone.

My first Aldo's experience is happening as we speak with the cappuccino I'm currently drinking. There are several reviews of Aldo's focused around the sole fact that their beans are burnt to a crisp essentially destroying the flavor and any of the nuances you'd get out of the bean. I will have to agree with these folks that I think they overdo it - now remember a few things:
1 - the cappuccino is all about the flavor of the bean and the espresso, it's not about how frothy or foamy it is. The foundation of a cappuccino is the espresso, the bean.
2 - my review is on their cappuccino not their coffee.
3 - they (Mr. Aldo) grind / prepare their beans every morning
Overall if it didn't taste as burnt as it is wherby I've lost the ability to enjoy the espresso bean itself, it'd be 5 yelps. But alas, its not. You can elect to report LIVE at Greenport Starbucks across the street if you'd like.

Excellent, worth-the-wait coffee for my time-zone tilted, bleary-eyed Greenport-roaming self. The line was confusing and Aldo himself ( I believe) had to tell the two teenagers behind the counter exactly how to tie their shoes nevermind brew the coffee and ring it up. But there is cool stuff to look at while you wait and hey, at least you're not waiting in line at the Starsucks across the street. (You did not come all the way to the North Fork of Long Island to wait in line at Starsucks.)
I gathered during my wait that I think you are supposed to order the biscotti. I didn't, but you should. -

Aldo's came highly recommended from the North Fork Table down the street. Having had a wonderful dining experience there, we decided to head down to this roaster for a taste.
Pluses: This coffee roaster is right across the street from Starbucks. It's one of those kinds of mom & pop places that you want root for, next to a monopolizing corporate giant.
Minuses: Unfortunately, Aldo's subscribes to the theory of "the darker the roast the more flavorful the coffee". Its beans are burnt, beyond how even Starbucks burns its beans. Its coffees are bitter to the point that any nuances of the beans are completely gone.
The verdict: Aldo's is a good coffee house for folks who enjoy Italian-style burnt roasts. But their coffee is not for anyone who has experienced a cup of well-balanced light/medium roasted coffee from the likes of Ritual, or even Philz. -

Wow, what a cup of coffee. My wife and I shared a cup of latte here today and it was awesome. Nice little space near the water and the carousel. Exponentially better than the coffee place who will not be named across the street. I'd have given them 5 stars but the wait was a little too long - and I'm a little impatient. But really, it was worth the wait.
