This should tell you everything you need to know about how good the food is at Alder Wood Bistro:
Take the ferry from Edmonds to Kingston and drive your ass to Sequim. The braised short ribs are tender, sweet, smoky, rich with a red wine sauce. The seafood, meat and veggies are sourced locally and couldn't taste more fresh!
I am planning to come back as soon as I can to enjoy the rest of the menu. -

Just ate here. Food is good, not five stars like many have posted.
I would never order the Seafood carbonara again. Overwhelmingly tasted like smoked salmon.
Really enjoyed the whole crab, delicious.
Also liked the complimentary bean spread with home made foccacia. But if I were to go to Sequim again, wouldn't come back. -

We stopped by here after flying into Seattle on our way to Port Angeles. My only negative point was that this place wasn't that busy and it took them 5-10 minutes to seat us.
Sit outside if you can, especially if the weather is nice! Their outdoor seating is out in a garden out back. We spotted some artichokes, blueberries, celery, and all kinds of other herbs growing, just watch out for bees!
The food itself was good, they make it a point to mark on their menu whether something is locally harvested or regionally harvested. I had the oyster "poor boy". Basically pan-fried oysters in a sandwich with a salad on the side. I couldn't name the sauce they served with it, a little sweet and slightly sour (vinegary). I even ate the salad. They also have a good number of local/regionally bottled and brewed beers and ciders.
Overall, it was a good start to a great trip. I'd recommend stopping by, the restaurant is in a very convenient location if you're heading into the Olympic (national park) peninsula area. -

Seattle, WA
Our server, Devon and the staff and chefs of Sequim have made one of the best restaurants in Washington, if not the entire world. On a week-long business trip to Sequim, I had the pleasure of eating here three nights in a row and would gladly eat there for every meal.
Let me just mention what they've done with poutine: a french Canadian creation that is always tasty but here made with a twist: grilled brussel sprouts are the fries, a turkey confite-style gravy is the gravy and shaved cheese finishes the dish to make it the most memorable appetizer I may have ever had.
Everything else: supreme. From fresh (meaning caught that day) steelhead, to succulent steak, fresh local oysters, and an incredible wine list (loved the tempranillo). Sourcing with local Nash Farms greens--yum and pouring Kangen water, which makes me feel better already, Alder Wood Bistro is a place to go and is highly recommended. Thanks to Devon and all for an incredible three day feast. -

Port Townsend, WA
Because we live in port Townsend where good food is the norm, going to Sequim for a meal is more about getting out of town rather than the food. Not tonight Alderwood was definitely about the food tonight.
The roasted beet salad with goat cheese and flatbread with cheese, onions and greens started us off. Next was the leek and potato soup de jour followed by lovely stew of blackened coho salmon, clams, and beans in a wine reduction. But my favorite were the pan fried oysters served with a spicy sauce. Crispy on the outside avd just done on the inside. These were perfect pan fried oysters in the heart of oyster country. We took home a piece of dense just sweet enough carrot cake. An excellent meal!!! -

Sequim, WA
The Alder Wood Bistro is one of the best restaurants in Sequim. It features a great deal of local foods and does a good job of preparing them. The quality is excellent, and the prices are reasonable for what you get. If the weather is nice, their outdoor seating in back is very pleasant. Definitely worth a try if you are in Sequim and want some local flavor.

Very nice place. A house converted to a cozy and cute bistro. The food was great as the menu sports a lot of organic stuff. I had the grass fed beef burger and it was a hit. Portions are more european, meaning you will not go into a food coma if you finish your plate and although on the pricey side, we enjoyed it.
make sure to sit in the backyard. -

Seattle, WA
Oh. My. God. This place is amazing. I have only been here once, but I was so impressed that the next time I was headed out to the Olympic peninsula, I seriously considered modifying my itinerary to allow for another meal there (they are closed Sunday and Monday, unfortunately).
Don't be fooled by the less-than-stellar look of the building from the outside. Walking in, it is clear that this is an excellent establishment. We were lucky to be there on a beautiful day (though, aren't most days beautiful in Sequim?), and sat on their back patio, which was just blissful. The sun coming through the trees was such a beautiful environment for the meal.
And the food!! I was first drawn here by their focus on local and organic food, combined with the good reviews that I had seen on Yelp. Local/organic/sustainable restaurants are pretty much my favorite kinds of restaurants, and this one was no disappointment. The menu differentiates if ingredients are a) from Sequim, b) from within 100 miles of Sequim, or c) are from WA, OR, or BC. You can tell how much local food is important to them with that detail of categorization. Also, you know how menus at most places might indicate which ingredients are organic? Here, the menu indicates which one are NOT organic, which gives you an idea about how much is organic. In theory, there could be no better plan for a restaurant.
And in practice, the food was delicious! I split their truffled french fries and the wood-fired pizza special with my dining partner, and Oh My God. I could have eaten two orders of those truffled fries with the aioli for my entire meal. They were AMAZING. Seriously. I would go back just for them
But then! The wood-fired pizza special was also delicious. I can't remember specifically what was on it, but the crust was nice and crispy and well balanced, the cheese was delicious, and I know there was some kind of local sausage on it, which was tasty.
We came for lunch and were not starving, so splitting the fries and the pizza was completely sufficient for two people, and made the bill was completely reasonable, especially for the caliber of food that we experienced. I would go back just to eat that same meal, but I also want to go back to try so many other delicious-looking things on their menu.
Probably the only non-stellar thing was that the service was not as prompt as it could have been. But really, sitting in the back under sun dappled trees, I really didn't mind waiting a few extra minutes.
In short, this is currently one of my favorite restaurants in the entire state of Washington, and I hope that I have many opportunities to return. -

Really good imaginative food choices.
Fairly slow service.
Waitress checked in mid-meal and says
"It is delicious"
with an ever so slight inflection in her voice at the end of the sentence.
I say "is that a question?"
"Yes"
Then yes it's very good. I can't stand it when restaurant staff TELL u the meal is "good" or "delicious" and then leave it up to you to either nod your head in assent or speak up and contradict them!
Though we didn't try it, the beer and dessert selection looks good, the quality of the food is good. Service is slow and prices are slightly high. -

San Francisco, CA
This place is well-named because their smoked salmon was suitably delicious, served as it was on a nice, blackened piece of alder wood. It was one of those dishes where I spent the whole time coveting thy girlfriend's food. OTOH, my lamb was egregiously over-salted; damn boomers and their failing taste buds. OTTH (on the third hand), they had a true Italian arancia (w/ PNW flair, i.e. mushrooms) that was very good. Nice wine list. Definitely seemingly over-the-top for the area.

On a 10 day vacation throughout the Pacific Northwest (including Seattle, Vancouver, and Whistler) this was THE BEST food I had the entire trip! And I'm a really picky eater when it comes to quality and taste.
I had the polenta lasagna (delicious!) and grabbed bites from all the other plates on the table -- meatloaf, pork chops, planked black cod -- and was blown away. They get bonus points for using local and organic meats and veggies.
When it came to dessert, we couldn't decide so we just ordered all three choices. Chocolate Bliss, creme brulee, and warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream, all of which disappeared within 2 minutes. :)
We sat outside in the garden area, which had a view of the mountains. Absolutely beautiful. What a great way to wrap up our trip! -

Sequim, WA
Artistic cuisine for the environmentally-conscious foodie, Alder Wood Bistro is a great place to sample the offerings of the Pacific Northwest, most specifically the Sequim-Dungeness Valley.
Beautifully appointed, great adult atmosphere, and cozy tables make this a great date destination. Nearly everything on the menu is seasonal and locally raised, organic, and creatively presented. From handmade ice cream starring local blue cheese (!), to local beers/ciders/wines, to salads made from greens picked just a few miles away and brought to your table hours later, this place is worth the price for the discerning eco-foodie. Prices are understandably high, but portions are generous. Service is not particularly quick, but the food was worth waiting for. Their specialty, wood-fired foods, include roasted seasonal veggies and breads (as well as fabulous pizzas!) kissed with smoky goodness. -

Great little out of the way bistro on Olympic Peninsula. Nice place to stop on
way to Hurricane Ridge in Olympic Natl Park. Had a delicious steak and wild mushroom panini w/ sweet potato fries Don't remember what my friend had as this was back on Sept 16, 2011. She did have a pear cider that was quite tasty and only 5% alcohol. I had some tea w/agave syrup. Really good. Only about a dozen tables and pretty full for a Friday afternoon. Beautiful setting in small converted home. Interesting tree (they called it a Monkey tree) out front. Desserts looked decadent but we did'nt partake! -

Port Angeles, WA
AWESOME little place located in a residential neighbourhood a couple of streets off the main drag. Doesn't look like much from outside, but it's full of wonderful surprises. My favourite place to sit is outside in the back patio -- even on cooler, grey days. Watch the birds flit about, what stage of growing the various fruit, veg, & herbs are in. Usually nice, groovy world music playing.
Local, organic, etc. clearly marked on all items. Although there's not necessarily a lot that's ready-to-go as vegan, they always work with me. My favourite thing to order is the portobello panini (withouth cheese). Amazing sweet potato / yam fries. Wood-fired veggies are really nice.
Slow-food kind of place... not "fast food". Be prepared to kick back and enjoy yourself. Forget your hurried life for a time. :) -

Olympia, WA
My spousal unit and I stayed 3 nights at a great little cottage on the beach, while I was there for my 30th (choke!) reunion. I had checked out local dining on-line prior to the drive up there, and thought this sounded pretty good, based on the locavore and organic attitude.
PRETTY GOOD?! Well, let's just call it fantastic!
First, we called to see if we could get in on 15 minutes notice, and they said they could figure it out, so come in. Turns out that only the inside was busy; plenty of tables outside in the garden. I highly recommend eating outside if the weather is good (and it was perfect that day).
Food: We are small-bites-many-times-a-day-eaters, so decided to share a few things. Started with a couple of raw oysters (yes, I know this was not a month with an "R"), and they were great. We asked for the name of them something like 6 times, and our very attentive and funny server said she would write it down, as they were a specialized oyster from a local grower. Small, deep shelled, briny - summer at the beach in a bite.
Next, we had the beet salad (local organic beets, local goat cheese). Wonderful sweet and earthy beets perfectly marinated, greens perfectly dressed (and I am a salad snob!). Loved it so much, that in fact I bought some of the golden beets at the Nash Organic Farm Store (also worth a trip) the next day and repeated it at home a couple of days later.
Then, the pizza. We make a pretty mean pizza at home, but have not mastered a crust that we both like. This one did it: crisp, yet chewy, not too thick, not too thin. We had the "Smokey(?)", a little too meaty for me (that's just me), and spousal unit thought it was just right.
By then, we were done, stuffed, roll me home, kaput! Until...she mentioned the lavender creme brulee. Well how can you turn that down? After arguing over who got the first "crack", we hunkered down and ate every last delicious bit. We are not dessert people, but this was delicious (Am I being redundant, yes. Was it delicious, yes!). Be warned: the creme itself is little softer than most, because of the fresh eggs, but still absolutely great. The brulee was super crisp and perfectly browned. The lavender is very subtle and seemed to add a little clean brightness to it.
Wine: we described what we wanted in a taste profile, and she brought a perfect wine. I think it was the Steele Sauvignon Blanc.
Ambiance: Well, a garden on a perfect summer day? Under one of the cherry trees (yes, we "stole" a few), next to loganberries about to ripen. Herbs, Artichokes, etc. gone to seed (because this is a seed saver year for them).
Service: Devon was probably one of the best servers I have ever had, and I have had MANY with work travel: attentive without being obtrusive, funny (hey, she put up with us!). Also, you could tell she had several regulars who adored her. But here is the BEST part: she wrote down a list of things we might want to do. We paid up, left, and were almost 2 blocks away when she came running down the street after us! Out of breath, she said, "I forgot to give you the name of the oysters!" and wrote it down for us.
They are "hasteelum kul", by the way.
Go there. Just don't be sitting in my Loganberry table when we visit next. -

Seattle, WA
We first learned about this place a few years ago, and we were looking forward to having a special meal here.
It started out promising enough with a bowl of Penn Cove mussels in a Pernod cream sauce. After eating this dish, we were licking our chops in anticipation of our entrees.
I ordered ling cod with manila clams. The fish was served in a bowl over beans and Swiss card and topped with chopped vegetables and a tampanade. The individual components were good, but the dish was a big, unfocussed combination of incompatible ingredients.
My dining companion ordered the lamb served with polenta and "seasonal wood-fired veggies." The lamb was tender and cooked properly. Unfortunately, the small serving of polenta was swimming in too much muhammara (a sauce of roasted red peppers and molasses). The serving of wood-fired vegetables was disappointingly small.
Our entrees were two failed attempts at "gourmet" cooking. We noticed that about half of the other diners were eating pizza, and perhaps that it what we should have ordered. -

A local recommended Alder Wood Bistro to us when we were in town for a vacation. We went and decided to sit on the patio because it was a nice day.
We had to wait awhile to get menus. We weren't sure why the hostess who sat us didn't give us any, so we went inside to get some. They told us they'd be right out with them. We got the menus and were delighted to see that they had many local and regional products in their meals. They clearly marked which ones had ingredients from where. Most of the ingredients are local and organic. We thought the prices were decent for this type of food, since you obviously pay more for better and local ingredients.
We started with the sweet potato fries. They were to die for! Deliciously salted and with a dipping sauce that was yummy. They disappeared quickly. If you like sweet potato fries, pay extra to get them as a starter or add them to your meal. You won't be sorry!
I ordered the simple salad and the lentil soup, which was the soup of the day. I'm a vegetarian and was surprised there weren't more vegetarian options. 2 salads, one sandwich (portabella sandwich, and I'm not a fan of mushrooms), and maybe a pizza. Don't remember but I'd guess so. The lentil soup was really delicious. It was small, but hearty. And order the grilled bread with your soup! It was fantastic. The salad was so-so. Pretty simple, like they said. The dressing wasn't my favorite. But I ate it anyways.
My group really liked their meals too. When an extra person came, they got his meal out fast so he wasn't to far behind us.
Overall, great food but would like more veggie options, beautiful patio, service was so-so but maybe bc we were on the patio and there was a large party there too, but I'd go back! -

We went to squirm to see the lavender festival.
Overall the atmosphere good (we got to sit outside in yard which is really relaxing), service great, and all the dishes we ordered were very good.
It's weird to see a great restaurant in the middle of no where. I would actually list this a $$$ and not $$ though the micro-brews where cheap. -

I had one of the best meals in the past year here.
Tucked away in an old residential home, you definitely have to make reservations for this small restaurant. The seems to be a local favorite, as it was enthusiastically recommended by a local winery and there were a few parties waiting to be seated when we arrived. They are known for their expertly-prepared local, organic and fresh ingredients.
We started off with big meaty mussels with sauce that we practically lopped up with our spoons (wait I think we did lop it up with our spoons).
I had one of their specials, lamb shank. The meat simply fell off of the bone was just simply perfect. The greens it came with were fresh and the grains complemented everything nicely. One of my friends ordered another of their specials, the alder planked salmon (see photo). I think the picture pretty much says it all; the salmon was as fresh as can be and yes it was as good as it looks!
For dessert, I ordered the Chocolate Hazelnut Meringue Torte: "Layers of organic hazelnut meringue, bittersweet chocolate ganache, and organic hazelnut butter cream served with organic whipped cream." Even though I was about to pop, I could not get enough of this. If I could give an extra star for the dessert, I would. -

Folks this place is expensive. And it's in Sequim. (Which, by the way, I had totally incorrect preconceived notions about that have since been quashed.) But hot damn this food is GOOD. Let me rephrase that: Hot damn this food is CELESTIAL.
My boyfriend and I rented a little place on the bay for Labor Day Weekend and this was at the top of our way-too-long-and-overplanned Sequim Bay To-Do List. Unfortunately we ate here on the first night, thus ruining the potential for all meals that followed.
I can still taste the Steak Frite with fresh-cut aioli fries and sauteed greens. My boyfriend continues to have dreams about the Lamb with polenta and veggies.
Do not skip dessert: The Chocolate Bliss (flourless brownie with ganache, housemade whip, and raspberry) will quickly sink you into a satisfying diabetic coma.
I have since suggested we make the 2 hour drive out there one evening to savor the offerings, maybe do a little gambling at the Indian casino, and be on our way back to the ferry. This place is that good. -

We had a delicious dinner here when visiting Sequim over Labor Day weekend this year. We shared a crab appetizer, and I had a vegetarian entree featuring lots of local produce-- carefully prepared, great, fresh ingredients.
There was a small rock in my friend's dinner salad which raised some eyebrows.
There's an interesting wood bar. The desserts are good.
I look forward to returning when going back to Sequim. -

Great Food, service spotty, mostly good. Overpriced, ( Seattle prices or more), Local ingredients, inventive, interesting menu selections.
Red wine served and stored WARM .
Chef & wife are the owners.
Close early ( 9:00 pm).
MUST make reservations most nights. Very noisy.
Nice, good weather outdoor patio.
To me the idea behind a "neighborhood bistro" is home cooking, using local fare at reasonable prices, they got it right except for the prices, 20% to high.
I'm sure they don't pay Seattle rents or wages so why the Seattle prices??? We recently ate at a "french bistro" in Yountville, CA and the prices were much more reasonable, so go figure.
Food: 4 stars out of 5
Service: 3 stars
Price/Value: 2 stars
Prepare to spend $100. plus per couple for dinner with wine, $50. for lunch. -

(Based on a visit in August 2009.)
Alder Wood took us completely by surprise. The exterior is very unassuming and the decor inside haphazard and boring. But the food was terrific - well prepared, using great ingredients that complemented each other.
The highlights of our meal included a smokey pizza with salumi salami and house made chorizo, a duo of goat cheeses, and an impeccable planked black cod. The pan-fried oysters were less exciting than we'd hoped, but there was a very nice beet salad. And we all went to town on the french fries we ordered for the kids.
If/when I'm anywhere near Sequim again, I'd make sure to eat here again. -

We had a lovely al fresco dinner here the other night. ("Al fresco" being the snooty term for "eating outside.")
Friends enjoyed the salmon tacos made with homemade corn tortillas, I loved the veggie pizza, chanterelle flatbread, caprese (made with succulent heirloom tomatoes and soft mozzarella that actually had flavor), and the bread served with paprika and olive oil-laced white bean spread .
The outdoor seating area is really charming, with a great big cherry tree in the center, surrounded by raspberry bushes, grape vines, and greens and herbs. I'm pretty sure this is the best restaurant around here for miles! -

Without a doubt the best food within at least 50 miles. The menu always offers entrees that integrate interesting flavors and textures. Prepared with love and care the Slow Food way, with fresh local ingredients. The wines are lovely, the service rocks, and the ambiance is classy. Alder Wood Bistro could compete handily with San Francisco Bay Area restaurants-- not a common find on the Oly Peninsula.

The atmosphere is very lovely with a local flora to greet you outside. We arrived late on a Friday night as we were passing through Sequim. Because there was no seating and it was late we chose the natural wood cut counter. Our food took 40 minutes to arrive, which was a little long, but both our dishes were baked and we were on the heels of a full house of orders. The beet salad was an outstanding blend of flavors. We will return next time we are passing through. I would probably say this is borderline a $$$ - three dollar sign stop. If you have wine, salad or any type of appetizer you are pushing the low end of $$$.

Don't be discouraged by the nondescript exterior. What happens in the kitchen is like a magic crystal hidden inside a brown geode. We visited Sequim for four days of Olympic Peninsula hiking and we were looking forward to being hungry when off the trail. We were amply rewarded during our two visits to Alder Wood Bistro where familiar menu items are transformed by the combination of the chef's slow food values and creativity, the cooking skills of the kitchen staff, the locally-sourced, high quality ingredients and the subtle application of woodfire smoke (even to some desserts). The service crew is enthusiastic and seem genuinely proud to serve guests with such interesting and delightful dishes. Two people, two visits and nine different dishes; most a revelation and all extraordinarily good. Exploring the bistro's menu was as spectacular, adventuresome and rewarding as the OP's mountains and beaches.

Might be worth a very long drive to Sequim!
Do make reservations and don't be deterred by the somewhat uninviting exterior. If it's warm enough, sit in the garden out back by the Christmas lighted cherry tree, while listening to Putumayo world music and gazing at the fire pit.
Menu notes:
*We got the recommended sweet potato fries and they were the best.
*Who would think a simple chard side dish could be so very tasty?
*I forgot to ask for my salad dressing on the side, but didn't need to - it was perfect!
*Emphasis on organic and local :)
*Bread is from Pane d' Amore, our favorite bakery in Port Townsend.
*Get dessert.
As my daughter would say, "Nom" (a sound to express satisfaction through eating)! -

Got off the ferry at Port Angeles and we needed to find lunch on the way home. Read about Alder Wood in a guide book so we headed there. What a surprise the small unassuming restaurant is off the main drag in this small town which I had not heard much about. The place was crowded on a Wednesday and we had a few minute wait. The food was really excellent. Most of the food is organic and local with lots of seafood choices. We had a excellent calamari salad with arugula and kaffir lime vinaigrette. Also a delicious muscles with white beans and salami.. Will definitely go back.

Had reservation for 730pm on a Saturday night.
Place was empty.
We were sat in the back after numerous stares from employees w/o smiles!!?? Were we too late to eat there?
Table was dirty with crumbs, and stains from last customer. Waited 14 minutes for waiter who never smiled.
He brought menus, and then water.......warm, water??!!!
After another 15 minutes, we ordered.
Ordered a pasta dish, and a pizza.
Waiter brought basket of bread...exactly 3 slices of cold, hard bread that it seemed like he got from another table.(really!!) (yuk).
Waited 40 minutes for pizza, and dish.(forty!)
Pizza was absolutely the worst we have ever experienced! Very small, with no cheese(none!), yet 50% crust !! (more bread?)
Pasta was warm and flavorless.
Insects and flies on or around our table. Water served was warm(room temp) again.
We left without leaving tip, never to go back again!

Never again!!! ........................Ever!!!! -

Simply the best around Sequim! We had reservations on a Saturday night at another restaurant and that other restaurant couldn't seat us so we called Alder Wood Bistro at 8:15 and they said they could fit us in! An otherwise disastrous night was averted and we ended up with superior dining!! The food was really very good, the service was great and super friendly!! Definitely THE place to go in Sequim! We had the pan-friend oysters which were fantastic and the best of all, most things are sourced locally!

Great dinner experience on an early September Saturday night. Excellent service from all staff we encountered, especially our waitress, who even went out of her way to find the answer to a random question about the wine we were drinking. Food quality, presentation, and flavors were wonderful. Prices were good for the quality level.
My wife had the lamb, which was superbly tender ad flavorful, with deliciously wood-fired seasonal vegetables. I had the meatloaf, which was moist, meaty, and nicely seasoned; but the best part was the mashed potatoes, which were creamy and buttery, probably the best I have ever had. The white bean and bacon soup was perfectly seasoned, and the base just thick enough. The desserts were very good as well, with the lavender creme brulee floral in the nose, but not in the mouth, and a light, creamy, melt-in-your-mouth consistency.
Al in all, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys great food.Listed in: Top Restaurants

Hands-down, this place is the best restaurant in Sequim, and a true delight. The food is creative and interesting without being crazy or pretentious. Most importantly, it's incredibly delicious and you can tell that it's made with love! Their devotion to fresh, local, seasonal ingredients is really cool. (Their menu even tells you how local each dish is and where its ingredients come from.)
The salads are great - and the small is quite ample, especially as a first course; the large could definitely be a meal in itself. The pizza has a great crispy thin crust and great-quality toppings. I had the veggie pizza, which was kind of a haphazard mix of vegetables - quite obviously a "well, this is what they had at the farmer's market this week" mix - and yet the vegetables were all so delicious and perfectly cooked, so it was still an awesome pizza. The meat pizzas seemed to be even better with more cohesive themes. Finally, the desserts were incredible, particularly the Meyer Lemon Custard Cake. Wow.
For being the best (and probably most expensive) restaurant in Sequim, though, this place has a really relaxed, casual ambience. No dressing up required here. The decor is nice, quirky but tasteful, not too fancy. It is a fairly small place - probably not well suited to a very large group. The staff were all wonderful and very nice. -

I worked here for over 2 years and I miss the atmosphere, people, and food. I loved my job and seriously have dreams about the food now that I'm hundreds of miles away from it. What I wouldn't do for some delicious sweet potato fries and calamari!!!! Oh and a delicious panini. And a bowl of daily different soup... Man can you tell I'm pregnant?? :)
