Discovered Alder Inn by doing a Google search and it popped up on Trip Advisor's website as one of the top rated places to stay. Decided to check it out for a Tahoe boarding weekend trip and I wasn't disappointed at all. It was quite quaint and the owners of this place were SUPER friendly and nice! I liked how each room was decorated differently and Layni let me pick out the room I wanted to stay in after checking out the photos.
When you get into the room, it is small but uber cozy. I had the "hippie" room as I call it - the one with the peace, and love paintings. I especially loved the toiletries...they had a new razor, men Axe products, and other stuff I can't remember at the moment. It was more than what most places will giveaway for their toiletries and I thought it was a nice personal touch.
The room also had a tray on the bed with little goodies which as chocolate and it was much appreciated. I will definitely come back here in the future and highly recommend this place to others! -

We absolutely LOVE this place!!! Not only are the rooms custom designed down to every little detail, but the atmosphere of this hotel is unlike any other hotel we've stayed at.
The owners are two of the most friendly people you will ever meet, and will ensure your stay here is the best. Everyone we met at the pool, and around the hotel were really friendly and outgoing. The rooms are very clean, and beautifully decorated. You can really tell just from looking around, that the owners put a lot of time and care into making this place the absolute best. Very close and conveniently located to downtown. We look forward to our future trips to Tahoe to stay at the Alder Inn! -

Great location, clean and comfortable rooms, and unbeatable amenities (free snacks, diverse bath products, nice linens and robes, and a nice pool/hot tub area).
We had a wonderful time here last weekend. The owners, Chad and Layni, are really friendly people who go out of their way to make your experience comfortable and relaxing. The rooms are great, the hot tub was much-needed after a long day skiing, and the free breakfast was a nice bonus. The Inn is a short walk from a lot of different dining options, and a short drive to Stateline and the casinos. It's also very close to Heavenly resort.
Overall, you can't really beat this place. It's like a bed-and-breakfast in a motel setting, and a really great value for the area. We will be back! -

This is a cozy and welcoming place to stay.
The two bed room came with full sized beds, not queens, and for 4 guys, its a bit too cozy. The layout is no different than a typical motel. But the walls are painted a warm brown and I think it made a positive difference. Lots of pillows on the beds and unique decorations too.
Great location for South Lake Tahoe and close to Stateline for casino action. I wish I took advantage of the close proximity to Heavenly on New Years Day when my room buddies decided to stay in and nurse their hangover and aching bodies all day. I think I could have just walked there myself! Sierra at Tahoe is not too far of a drive either, but just a warning, the 50 hwy gets backed up and parking can take longer than you think on busy weekends.
The owners are a friendly couple from Texas I assume. They bought it in February 2010 and remodeled the whole place and looks like they do all the work. They put a lot of effort into and it shows in a great way.
I'd recommend this place for couples especially.Comment from Layni D. of Alder Inn 3/27/2011

Alex P and I stayed at this hotel for Labor Day because it was affordable, walking distance to the lake and near a lot of great restaurants and stores.
It turned out that the hotel was completely redone. They just opened the hot tub that week! We even spent some time in the hot tub with the owners and they said that each room (which is uniquely decorated with a slightly silly, but not cheesy theme) has a piece of their old house in it to help decorate each room. Our room was jungle themed and we had a 6' tall elegant wooden giraffe and three small monkey statues in our room from their house.
They even have complimentary bike for their guests to borrow to ride around town. They had free tea, coffee, and granola in the rooms as well as microwaves, refrigerators, and a really good selection of toiletries. It was great! The location was great, we could walk to the Lake and if it were winter it was right at the base of heavenly. It was also a complimentary bike ride away from the Nevada casinos.
They run the business completely by themselves (no extra help for housekeeping) and I appreciate all the work they've put into making this hotel special and affordable for their guests. I will definitely stay there again. -

My husband and I were up for a couple days of skiing at Heavenly Valley. We found Alder Inn on Expedia. The pictures of the rooms are what prompted me to stay there. When we arrived we were greeted by the owners Chad and Layni. They were very sweet and friendly. They even told us that booking through Expedia is more expensive and next time we should call them directly to get a better rate. I was happy that they shared that with us. The rooms exceeded my expectations. The interior decorating was wonderful. So classy ! The attention to detail amazed me. I felt I was actually staying in someones guest bedroom at there home. The location was great. Just down the street from Heavenly. We were able to sleep in and take our time getting up to the slopes. I would without a doubt stay there again. Chad and Layni seem like people I would be friends with. My husband and I are also business owners and know how much time and effort goes into creating a great experience for the customer and Chad and Layni defiantly did that!

We got stuck in a snowstorm, and needed a last minute place to stay the night. Alder Inn had a room that we thought was cheap for Tahoe during the winter and we were really pleasantly surprised how nice it was.
Sure, it's still a motel and the walls and doors are a little thin, but they've clearly painted recently, upgraded fabrics (drapes, bathroom curtain, blankets), added small touches like big fun coffee mugs, throw pillows, and a whole assortment of great toiletries that it felt much more like a nicer hotel than a motel. The bed seemed new (was firm, but comfy), the room was clean, and they were super friendly. (They even went up and turned on the heat for us while we were getting stuff out of the car, and in the morning had put out some snow brushes so we could get the snow off our car.)
We'd definitely recommend this place!Comment from Layni D. of Alder Inn 3/27/2011

Chad and Layni were the greatest hosts during our stay at Alder Inn. They were always around to answer any questions we had and made our visit to Lake Tahoe wonderful.
The location of the Alder Inn is perfect. You can walk or bike to many of the "things-to-do" in South Lake Tahoe.
The rooms are updated and they add extra amenities that some bigger hotels don't provide.
Great place and we will stay there again on our next trip. -

NO LONGER PET FRIENDLY !!!!
Very nice gentleman I spoke with on the phone explained that due to a very bad experience with "guests" whose dog destroyed a brand new mattress, they no longer accept pets. It is so unfortunate that a few irresponsible pet owners make it more and more diffecult to find a nice comfortable place to stay with our well trained, beautiful Lab.
I recommend this lodging to everyone else and I'm sure you will enjoy your stay here . Very pleasant friendly owners. New mattresses, new furniture, etc -

With good reviews and a good price to boot, we stayed at the Alder Inn. Seemingly owned and remodeled by a nice couple transplanted from Texas, it struck the perfect value balance between price and features.
Sure, the walls are kind of thin and the bathroom walls/floor are kind of cracked, but with fresh paint and new fixtures it masks the fact that this used to probably be a pretty sub-par motel. Tiny flat-screen, free wifi, microwave, mini-fridge and coffee maker in-room for a very reasonable rate.
Having stayed at similarly priced places in South and North Lake Tahoe, we felt that this had the most comfortable bed by far - and that's a big plus when you're out on the slopes all day.
The owners, while very nice, do give you the feeling like they are trying to micro-manage you with the plethora of signs of what you cannot do. That felt a touch odd.
Will definitely be staying there again thoughComment from Layni D. of Alder Inn 4/4/2011

More like 2.5 star.
Biggest Con: This place is way too expensive for what it is. You can stay at a 4 star hotel for $40+ less if you book on priceline or hotwire.
Small, quaint place run by a couple -- they are super nice and accommodating but also seem very particular about their rooms and keeping a close eye on everything that goes on on-site. Kinda feels like your anal aunt and uncle are watching over your shoulder the entire time you are there. The walls and doors are a bit thin, so you can hear through them.
Nice that they allow pets for a small fee ($20); however, beware the owners lurking to make sure you don't leave your dog alone in the room -- or they will charge you something like $20something PER HOUR to watch your pet.
Rooms are clean, and I like how each room was decorated differently (although some of the decor is kinda tacky). Overall okay, but would not stay again (mainly because of the price). Would recommend for quiet families.
**As you can see from the psychotic overzealous response to this review, the owner is pretty type-A overbearing -- definitely staying away and I recommend everyone else do the same. And FYI, I checked priceline/hotwire for the EXACT same day and saw a 4star hotel for $40 less.Comment from Layni D. of Alder Inn 2/6/2011

I wasn't expecting much for the price, but was pleasantly surprised.
Pros- pet friendly, convenient location, friendly staff, good price
Cons- thin walls, older facility, old mattress
I would return to this place, the price was right, and the owners are exceptionally friendly. I received many good travel tips. The place is older, but its obvious they have made good efforts to spruce the place up. -

Very nice, friendly & hard working couple(the owners). The room feels cozy & at home. Clean & comfy. Close to the marina & Heavenly Ski Resort (california side). The only 2 things that I don't like are the old heater & the noise insulation. Other than that I don't have anything to complain about.

Stayed here during our first visit to Lake Tahoe. The owners were great, very helpful and very warm. We felt very welcome here. They even helped us when we were looking for parking on our way to Heavenly. The room was a simple but well decorated room, more than what you should expect in a 2 star (according to http://hotels.com) hotel. The place had more amenities than larger hotels we have stayed at. I mean they even had a men's razor there if you needed it. You didn't have to ask for one. The location was great, within walking distance to most things though we did just end up driving around to different places. Didn't hit up the hot tub but perhaps next time. Nice breakfast was served on Saturday morning. Would recommend the Alder Inn to anyone visiting Lake Tahoe. Check out their reviews on Trip Advisor!

Great little spot in South Shore. The rooms were clean and modern. Comfy beds. The only pesky thing was the shower that drained very slowly, causing water to pool at our feet. Easy to overlook with all the extras like free snacks, free WiFi and lovely grounds. Would definitely stay again.

The Alder Inn is very comfortable and clean. The host family is darling. The rooms are decorated whimsically (makes you smile) and with real people in mind. The room is immaculate; bed very comfortable; the amenities and snacks are natural and healthy. One main reason I chose it is it's off the well-traveled main drag - very quiet - but close enough to walk down and enjoy all the activity if you wish. Enjoyed my very drinkable morning coffee out under the trees (alders?) as the sun came up. I will definitely return here and will be recommending to friends - you can bring your dog for $20! Thanks, Layni and Chad, for making me feel so comfortable and welcome.

Great pet friendly place that has been remodeled. Cozy, comfortable and owners are friendly too. Nice touch that our doggie received his own bed and towel, and a treat! He loved it! It is a nice touch to leave a treat, cost minimal but impression huge!

The biggest plus for this place, as well as the biggest drawback is that it's pet friendly. For those who travel with their animals it's great, but for those that prefer a quiet stay, look somewhere else. The rooms are uniquely furnished, no two look alike. The beds are really comfortable, especially after a day on the lake, hiking the mountain or skiing the slopes. In my opinon it was a bit over-priced for what it was.

Absolutely adorable rooms (I wish my own home was half as cute!), friendly and helpful owners, great location and, at least in the off-season, an unbeatable price. It was the perfect place to begin a week-long vacation. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

A very nice place to stay in South Lake Tahoe. Close to restaurants and the Nevada border if you're willing to walk a bit. Modern rooms, clean and generally neat. Just the shower head is a little too low. We stayed in the 2nd floor, kids jumped a little too much and bothered the lower level people :-).

We loved this place! Cozy, well-priced, perfectly located for a south shore lake tahoe Heavenly ski getaway, plus a nice little walk to shopping and Chevy's too. New owners are super nice and did an adorable remodel. Our room was comfy and we loved the unobstrusive heater - didn't hear it switching on and off, yet our room remained a perfectly even temperature and never got stuffy. We'll definitely be back!
