I am Totally. Sold. If you read my last review of Alchemy (and unless you're my mom or husband, you probably haven't, no worries I'll update you), you know that last time I stopped by I discovered that they have two new-on-the-floor junior stylists doing cuts and color for CRAZY CHEAP prices (temporarily!).

What can I say, that resonated with me.

First off, and as previously described (mom, husband - you remember!), I got a cut with Jody, who f'ing kicked ass! (Trying to communicate my enthusiasm via potty mouth, hope it's working.) They say to plan for two hours for a somewhat supervised cut with one of the junior stylists, and Jody took three and totally rocked it. Creative, bad ass, fabulous, twenty dollars. Amazing.

Now, fast forward a few weeks later, and I'm due for a root touch-up. I have dark brown hair that's been dyed blonde for over a year. I figured, I could either get a root touch-up...ooooor do something way more exciting! So I called to make an appointment to dye my hair red. Jody was booked during my free times, so I made an appointment with Mary Ann, the other junior stylist, who had a done a blowout for me before and earned my trust by not judging me for the 5 or so Milky Ways I ate out of their bowl while I was there.

Mary Ann did a phenomenal job. I used to work for a hair salon and saw many a color job. It's not easy to go from blonde to red. And Mary Ann rocked the sh*t out of it! I love my new color - it's bright, exciting, and multi-dimensional, achieved purely through formula development and application technique, no highlights. Like Jody did with my cut, Mary Ann took a vague idea of what I wanted and made it so much more awesome than I had pictured. (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)

I'm heading back in next week for another cut with Jody, and I'll be back in a few weeks for color again with Mary Ann - and you should too! And tell them Kristin Mink sent you, I'll make good use of the referral points! :)

Listed in: Silver Spring Things, They got me with the coupons!, Lookin' good!

I will definitely be returning to Alchemy. My stylist was super cool, my haircut was really nice and the shampoo includes a scalp massage - I'm a total sucker for scalp massages... Also, the chairs massage while your hair is washed.

I also like that they have online appointment set up, which is great because if I could go for the rest of my life exchanging every business phone call with a few clicks of a button online, I would.

I originally started going to Alchemy because my stylist moved there from a salon in VA.  It was a very inconvenient location for me, but because I just love how great she is with my hair, I sucked it up! I made this trek for about 5 years.  My stylist moved again and I recently went for the first time to the new salon and I love it.  It's such a contrast from Alchemy.  I found Alchemy to be overbearingly busy and never found the owner to be very friendly.

I'm glad I no longer have to make this trek! But I will say their shampoo chairs are GREAT!

I have been searching for a solid salon to go to  since my last hairdresser quit her job.  After reading reviews on yelp - I decided to give Alchemy salon a try and I am completely satisfied. I called the morning of to schedule an appointment and they were nice enough to squeeze me in for the afternoon.

I got my haircut with Jody - who is extremely talented and personable. Prior to any cutting she gave me an consultation and asked what I wanted. I told her I wanted to keep the length and add lots of layers and Jody executed exactly what I asked for.

Did I mention the hair wash? Amazing! The lady that washed my hair did a wonderful job and threw in an awesome head massage while she was at it.

I look forward to returning! The reason for 4 stars is because my appointment was scheduled for 2:00pm but i wasn't helped until 2:20 which wasn't too big of an deal.

First time here and I'll definitely be going back! Sheree really listened to me and did a fab color (darker for winter) and cut and even showed me a new (to me) way to style my heavy, slightly wavy (who knew?) hair.  Funky, fun atmosphere and friendly staff. Only thing...I don't think I got the scalp massage other reviewers have mentioned, but it may have gotten lost in the shuffle (a couple of people worked on my hair.) oh well...hopefully next time!

Upon recommendations of fellow Yelpers, I gave Alchemy a shot.  I had previously fallen in love with a salon in downtown Silver Spring, but I was feeling lazy and wanted to find a place closer to home.

I had to wait a while to get my hair washed, but the woman who washed my hair did a great job.  The haircut itself was fine, though I'm not sure I love it yet.

Jeremiah cut my hair.  He was very professional at all times.  I appreciated that he didn't try to engage me in small talk the whole time.  (It's much more fun listening to what other people are talking about!)  The hair cut was fine.  Nothing super impressive, but then again I didn't ask for much--just a trim and thinning.

Alchemy was a bit pricey ($70 for a cut), but there aren't many alternatives in the area.  The place was clean, though  few places could have used a dusting.  Unless I find an alternative, I will be back.

In a sleep-deprived haze of new motherhood, I went Alchemy in search of the Great Haircut. It was either take the baby with me or stay shaggy.

    The haircut won.

I was curious to see how it would all play out. The front desk folks, the shampoo goddess and Johnnie could not have been more lovely and accommodating. I actually relaxed - even with a high-needs baby on my person.

Bonus points to Johnnie for executing a superior cut while I breastfed my kid under the cape. Shhhh! Don't tell him!

Thank God for Alchemy!!!  After a very bad haircut and color at my regular, expensive Bethesda salon - that couldn't be fixed after another visit, I got on Yelp and found Alchemy.  And am so thankful I found reviews that espoused their greatness.  I made an appointment with Jody and she took the time to sit and listen and go through my hair - we both agreed it couldn't have gotten much worse.  She told me, blatantly so, that it would take a couple of visits to fix.  She gave me 2 options to choose from - one was a quick fix, but would be way short, the other was a little fix that would take 2months to really take shape.  I chose option 2, because I want my hair long again as soon as possible.  She told me it will look good, but not great - which, was dead on - better, but not that immediate fix.  However, after a month - I am getting complements left and right - "where'd you get your haircut", "when'd you get your new haircut", "look what you did over the holidays!"  Little did they know that it was just my great grow out - just as Jody had promised!!!!  I couldn't be happier that she took a really bad cut and fixed it - not only that, the cut and color are a fraction of the cost of my chi-chi Bethesda salon!  They're right around the corner, so I don't fight the Beltway.  All I need them to do is clean up the food and water area and they're 5 stars!  Jody?  Well she's a keeper!  I'll be following her with a tether for this great "my hair texture may be fine" but now beautiful, volume filled hair!

I tried Alchemy for the first time based on the overall advice of Yelpers. I was nervous about going here - I don't have a whole lot of confidence in trying new stylists - and am soured on those bad experiences with ones who never listened to anything I explained about my hair - but I had a really good experience at Alchemy.

I was able to get an appointment the same week - with Holly. When I arrived I was greeted by the front desk associate. She offered me tea/water and the place (at the front area) kind of had a spa feel. Even the chair you sit in when you get the shampoo done - they recline fully and even massage.

Once I was brought back to Holly's chair, she was open to hearing what I wanted and offered some ideas as well. She was extremely pleasant and friendly. She did a great job with the cut, and now, a couple months later, it has been growing out very well!

The only negative for me was the fact that there was hair all around Holly's chair still on the floor from the prior cut when I was brought back. I would have appreciated a clean-up of the work-space so I wouldn't have felt like I was going through a hair cut assembly line.

Regardless, Holly did a great job on my hair, the salon staff was all very friendly, nice atmosphere, and it was a reasonably priced haircut. I'm definitely going back!

I recently moved to the area and was lookig for a new hair salon. I get highlights so I was VERY nervous about where to go...and I had a wedding to go to that weekend. I read the reviews on YELP and decided to make an appointment. I went to Holly who was super fast and my hair highlights look better than the place I went to before. Before we started we kind of did a "consultation" - I originally went in for a full highlight but Holly was honest with me and told me I really only needed to do partial (which was nice bc she wasnt trying to take my money). She also made recommendations for what we could do in the future, which got me excited! Holly was super nice, efficient, and did an EXCELLENT job on my highlights.

I enjoyed my first trip the salon a month ago. My stylist was friendly and understood my needs. My hair is simple and I expect that a stylist should suggest the best cuts for one's hair/face and that's exactly what she did.

To begin, I entered the salon, which is located in a small shopping center and was warmly greeted and offered fresh beverages and a light snack. I was asked to put a wrap robe on, to protect my clothing/skin. I then met my stylist and then went and enjoyed a wonderful shampoo head massage...and I really do mean wonderful!

The cut was very quick, but detailed and she styled it to my needs.

    I will be back again

I got my hair done here about a month or so ago and I've been waiting to give my review until my hair grew out. Also, I was pretty conflicted about what I would rate this place and thought with time I'd get some clarity. No such luck!

    PROS
I really like the atmosphere here. It's bright and super clean, almost immediately after hair hits the floor it gets picked right up.

They have really nice amenities, like full robe wraps, cookies, assorted drinks, etc.

Staff is super friendly and nice. I was greeted right away, always asked if I needed anything, and my hair dresser Johnny came over to say hello as soon as he knew I was there, even though I was early and he wasn't quite done with his last appointment.

Shampoo girl was great, made sure that she gave a great scalp massage and the chairs they put you in are actually massage chairs.

So you would think with all these pros my review might be a bit higher, but . . .

    CONS
I said I wanted to do all that I could to keep my hair long and straight but just lighter with more layers. Somehow I was convinced to get several inches cut off. Johnny seems pretty confident and that's of course a good thing, but I wish I would have stuck with with just a trim and the layering. So maybe this is a con against me, I don't know, but either way I was left slightly frustrated.

When I was sitting in the chair and Johnny went to get something, I thought one side of my hair looked longer than the other. I thought for sure this wasn't possible but when I got home, there was definitely a chunk that was longer and it was really noticeable. I ended up trimming it myself.

So now it's a month later and although my hair isn't as long as I would have liked it did grow out very nicely. From the front it looks great! Except that in the back it is crooked. You heard my right, CROOKED. Now it's hard to say this is Johnny's fault because maybe I have some weird cowlick or something but still, when you pay that much at a salon you expect them to figure this out before they cut your hair.

SOOOO . . . The place is really nice and I really liked my stylist Johnny a lot but I just don't know how I feel about going there again given that I paid a lot to have crooked hair. I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt and try again but we'll have to see.

I've been coming here for four years and just keep coming back.  Gwen is amazing and has well over 10+ years of solid experience.  I've tried other places when my budget hasn't allowed me to come to Alchemy but no one knows my hair like Gwen.  I recently colored my own hair (bad NICOLE!)  and it ended up looking like crap.  Gwen to the rescue.... I waited a month to give my hair a break before I scheduled an appointment with Gwen for "repair" work.  She never ceases to amaze me.  I don't even have to tell her what I want... she just knows.  She is an expert at determining what color/style is best for each unique person.  It's truly an art.

Gwen is certified to do (Great Lengths) hair extensions.  After moving to Maryland 4 summers ago, I treated myself to some luxury.  The end result was amazing.  I wish I had the pictures to show off Gwen's work, but you could not tell that I had extensions.  I wouldn't recommend them to anyone; they're high maintenance and ridiculously expensive.  However, they might be ideal for a wedding or other very special occasion so if you're considering it, call Gwen.

I can't give Alchemy 5 stars because their customer service isn't always the best.  I can't tell you how many times I've called to schedule appointments and I get put on hold for a minimum of five minutes each time.  I end up hanging up because I can't continue to sit on the phone....... it's frustrating but nonetheless I keep going back because I always end up so happy with my hair and that's what really matters.

Another bonus... they always have the best herbal teas and treats.  They also have a rewards program so be sure to ask about it.  Can't hurt, right?

    Best in the DC area!!!

I was going to Alchemy for about a year when I decided I would cheap out and find some place else. I was EXTREMELY happy with their services (Jessica) but the price was getting to be to much for my hair length and highlights (both low and high). I know I know there is no cheap way to get them done but I was determined so I shopped around for a straight year!!!!

It was awful!!! I had so many disappointments and disasters that I had to get my hair corrected for more $ than I would have paid if I had just stayed with Jessica. So now I am crawling back because I know they are the best and I know that it's completely worth it.

Trust me ladies I've shopped around and this is the best place for highlights and haircuts in the DC region.

I have been going to Alchemy Salon for almost two years - hair color, and cuts. But the service has declined. I have been disappointed the last two times I have been there - not in the results for my hair so much. It is their professionalism that has dropped. The stylists seem to talk a lot amongst themselves with less attention to their clients. The helpers are not attentive, leaving color on too long, forgetting to wash out brows. I had one stylist try to use an inappropriate color application tool, and when I protested she said it would be alright - but the color stain on my skin from that situation lasted for days. I really like the atmosphere of the place but I fear they've lost their focus on the customer.

I love Johnnie, whom I've seen twice and will visit again next week.  He saved my hair :)  I had a REALLY bad experience (see my review of the Aveda salon in Bethesda) and eventually found my way here.  It's not super cheap, but it's definitely reasonable.  Johnnie listened to my ideas and concerns, and was really helpful with suggestions.  The whole staff has been really nice, actually.  AND they have tea, cookies - all sorts of nice touches - for refreshments.  Best of all, I actually like my haircut even weeks after it's done.  It grows out well, which is amazing.
Long story short, I'm sticking with Alchemy, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone (I've even converted my husband to it! - he's usually a barbershop guy)

I like Alchemy and here is why: I am youngish and I have a lot of grey hair. Like, a lot.  And I don't care yet; I think it's pretty cool and I like it, damn it.  So when I go to get my hair cut and somebody says I should dye my hair, it really pisses me off. It's like when somebody asks me to take my glasses off when I'm getting a picture taken. F you, people!  This is who I am!  So, anyway, the point is, at Alchemy, they don't ask me if I want to dye my hair. They just cut it.

I've been to maybe 4 or 5 different stylists there, and they all have different prices. I think the cheapest is $58.  With tip and everything, it's over $70, but that's better than the one time I paid over $90 there.  I saw Nate last time and my  hair cut is fine. I saw Gwen one time and it was fine, too, but she was very expensive.  Everybody is very nice and I trust them with my hair. Since I only get a cut maybe 3 or 4 times a year, it has to grow out well, and I haven't had any problems with that.

I like the atmosphere a lot, and I love getting my hair washed there. Scalp massages! I've only had a problem getting an appointment quickly the week before Christmas, and I couldn't expect anything else at that point. I can usually get in within a day or two.

This is my go-to place for a haircut now, so I would recommend it, as long as you don't mind paying $70+ for  a cut.

I am a huge fan of both Taylor and Kate.

When I first moved to DC, I went through a series of bad haircuts--some cheap, some not-so-cheap.  Finally, I found Taylor (she was at a different salon at the time).  When she moved to Alchemy, I came right along with her and have never been disappointed.  Taylor's schedule doesn't always work for me, so she recommended I try Kate.  Another great stylist.

Both Kate and Taylor understand my personality, style and the fact that I don't want to spend a great deal of time on my hair (not much of a morning person) and have always given me cuts that look great AND are easy to maintain.  I have so much trust in them that I tell them that they can "do what they want."

While I haven't had the other stylists, I do see the results of their work.  Everyone who walks out the door looks fantastic.

Oh yeah, those massage shampoo chairs are great too.  Existing customers can now book online....great new feature.

This review is really for Dan, my hairstylist, at Alchemy. I have been following him for over 6 years now and I've never had a bad experience. When he started working at Alchemy I was a little skeptical but once I sat in those massage chairs and received their famous scalp/hair massage, I fell in love. The rest of the staff there are friendly, funky, and fabulous! You feel totally at ease the entire time and leave feeling pampered. Dan is always booked so don't even try to book him on a Saturday unless you can get a cancellation, but I called during the blizzard and he was still booked. I never feel rushed with him and he takes his time during my moments of indecisiveness.
They also take credit cards and give you cash back if you ever need cash for tips.

I had a great experience at Alchemy. I will be going back for another Deva cut, even though my stylist Jessalyn has fled the DMV for the West Coast. I immediately felt welcome and as a girl with curly hair (Deva Curl Devotee) will look forward to my next experience at Alchemy. The salon itself is lovely, but I do wish they had some "spa" services like mani-pedis. In any case, even though it was a busy Friday afternoon, I still left feeling relaxed and pretty after a week from hell. When it comes down to it, isn't that all a girl can ask for?

I typically don't visit hair salons that provide the upscale "salon" experience because I simply want a haircut and I don't require "art" that I can't reproduce.  However, I needed some "art" (an updo) for a corporate holiday party.  My appointment was with Jaeclyn (and I know I am spelling it wrong - sorry!).

Well, I must say that Yelp has made an impression on this salon.  Apparently, stating that you heard about the salon through Yelp ensures that the salon treat you like a Washington Post food critic.

As expected, the salon offers beverages and an "ooh-la-la" shampoo station complete with vibrating chairs and the requisite head massage.  Nothing disappointed here.  I had a pleasant time and looked fabulous for the holiday party (I'll see if I can post a picture somewhere).  I received a letter yesterday regarding password access to their website to make appointments.  I haven't checked the website out yet, but apparently alchemy is on top of the virtual bandwagon.  Perhaps in a few months I will look into highlights.

One shortfall worth noting - alchemy is next to Trader Joe's, so the parking lot is always crowded with shoppers trying to find a parking space.  Give yourself 5-10 minutes to find a parking space on Saturdays.

I was very disappointed in my experience at Alchemy.  I had just moved to the area last year and used the reviews on Yelp to help pick a new salon to try.

The male hairdresser I was given to admitted to me that he didn't know how he got in to hairdressing and was still very new to it.  I asked for side swept bangs, and could barely see a difference in my long, layered hair at the end of it.  The "bangs" were a few strands of hair, not sexy fringe.

I was thinking about changing my hair color in the future.  We talked about it, and I was hoping for his opinion.  Instead, he had to call the manager over to look at my hair and ask her what was possible.  In short, it left me with zero confidence in the hair dresser.

I probably should have said something about the cut before paying, but I was honestly so disappointed that I just wanted to pay and get out of there.  This is one customer who will not be a repeat.

I went for the first time about two weeks ago and got a haircut with Nate-- I thought he did a pretty good job. Not the best blowout I've ever had (I have curly hair and I get it blown out straight-- I left with some kinks) but he definitely did what I asked and didn't cut more than I told him to.

My one and only BIG complaint was that apparently they were very busy, and therefore had RUN OUT OF HOT WATER AT THE SHAMPOO STATIONS. I had color done, so I had to be shampooed twice, both times with frigid water. Really-- it wasn't even lukewarm. I'm talking freezing. It was awful. The shampoo girl warned me and apologized, but COME ON. I wasn't offered any sort of apology when I paid my bill, either-- it would have been nice to say "sorry you were dunked in freezing water, here's a few bucks off your bill" or even a gift card for a few dollars off next time. Seriously I am not a fussy person, but to be shampooed with the coldest water ever at a hair salon where I'm paying not exactly discount prices is ridiculous.
On the fence about whether or not to return there.

Since leaving NYC and my trusted, amazing stylist of 6 years, I've had a really hard time finding a stylist that can get my cut right. (I have fine, curly hair, lots of it, and I wear it short). Often the shape isn't great, or they don't account for the thickness of it, or it starts looking like a mullet within 4 weeks. I was in Silver Spring for a wedding last week and, struggling with yet another cut that didn't grow out well, decided to look on Yelp for a place nearby to see what could be done.

I got an appointment with Taylor, and was extremely happy with her. As soon as I said I have problems with the mullet effect, she told me about some techniques she uses to help avoid that. I felt like she listened to what I wanted and what I didn't like about my current cut. She also told me everything she was doing as she did it, and asked me several times over the course of the cut how I felt about different aspects of it. She gave me a great cut that will grow out well. If I lived in the area I would definitely go back to Taylor.

Having been to salons in New York that charge $100+ for a cut, I felt $58 was reasonable for that level of service. The shampoo massage (w/ massaging chair) was a treat. Also, as your short hair grows out, Alchemy offers free neck trims for regular clients--I wish all salons did that!

They also have some really cute (and inexpensive) jewelry for sale up in the front.

Dan covered up a few grays around my hair line, perfectly.  Cost: $20 (optional blow out extra).  Apparently, my brown hair is in between a five and a six.  They were low on color that day, and Dan had to mix a four and an eight.  I couldn't believe it.  He matched my color exactly.  And, as usual, I was treated to excellent customer service and warm, relaxed conversation.

I have very straight hair and am always getting bored with it. It's hard for me to find a stylist that cuts my hair to frame my face and fit my personality. So when I found a stylist who could do this, I followed her around till she settled at this salon. The staff here are way more friendlier then most "upscale salons" and they seem to really listen to what you like. Having fresh water, tea, and honey wheat pretzels makes the visits even more relaxing and comfortable!

I can always count on Kate to satisfy my hair needs.  Whether I wanted to grow out or chop my hair off, Kate knew just the length and style to satisfy my taste! I'm sad that she's leaving though...I wish her the best in Texas! I will have to follow up once I check out the other stylists there...my next  appointment with be with Dan :)

So ... my ex is coming to town. Not just any ex, THE ex. You know who I mean, your favorite ex.

    OhmygoshwhatshouldIdo?

(Curtis just shrugged and continued reading the paper.)

I decided to just get a "revenge" cut. No, it wouldn't involve any sharp objects. If my hair stylist manages to really botch up my hair, s/he'd better watch out. I kid, I kid. (I swear, if I end up like Britney Spears post-what's his name era...). FYI: a "revenge" cut differs from a "break-up" cut, but they sort of have the same purpose. I don't really know these things.

After spending a little time on the internet I found Alchemy Salon in Silver Spring. It has gotten rave reviews from non-Yelp websites (so I doubt their credibility). I called in and made an appointment. I made a point that I didn't want to spend too much on a hair cut. I spend most of my time inside reading, away from discerning fashionistas and the such.

I came in for the appointment a few days later. To my surprise, the salon is adjacent to Trader Joe's in Silver Spring. I've passed by the salon so many times without noticing it. The salon inside was very hip and new (without trying hard). They opened a few years ago, but it was in pristine condition. I checked in, and the receptionist escorted me to the closet to put on my cape. She left me wondering where I was supposed to go afterwards. I guessed it was best to just wait out on their couch (with the cape on - eh...). The salon had a nice little refreshment center with various teas, water (with orange slices - I think I still prefer lemon in mine), and finger food for customers' consumption. I sat on the couch for some period of time until another receptionist took me to the shampoo station. I was delightfully surprised when the chairs were actually recliners with massage functions. Ahhhhh... But again, I had to wait for my stylist after that my hair was washed.

I stared at the ceiling trying to figure out whether light is a particle or a wave (it's part of a book I'm reading) until my stylist was finally free. I told him that I wanted a style that is very low-maintenance, but still chic (for a huge nerd like me that could be difficult to achieve). My hair is extremely thick and heavy thus I needed lots of layering. I always ask for the shaggy bob. This time, I wanted the bob to be similar to Posh Spice's "pob". (It has been replicated so many times, but the cut itself isn't that innovative. It still looks fabulous on others.) On another pathetic note, my ex looks like David Beckham. He despises when people tell him he looks (and mistaken him for) that overrated footballer. Sorry, but he does somewhat, and hopefully he won't find this review.

My stylist spent an hour working on my hair. I refrained myself from talking about my fascination of superstring theory and how it can merge quantum mechanics and general relativity (I'm reading "The Elegant Universe"). I tend to really bore anyone with that talk. Regardless, he was a very cool guy. Hair styling was his "true calling" (I have yet to find mine. Sigh.). He's quite skilled for entering the industry not too long ago. But near the end of the haircut, he started rushing. He had another client after me. Not good. I wish he eliminated more of my hair's thickness, but I was content with my cut anyway.

I may recommend Alchemy Salon to others. It's fresh and cool, the prices are affordable (according to DC standards), the massage recliners ease the neck pain most people suffer from being at those stations, free munchies and drinks, and friendly staff.

However, I may not recommend the salon because I constantly experienced wait before and during my appointment. My stylist should have managed his time a bit better, which would benefit his clients. My hair is extremely thick, and it does take time to cut it. My new hair cut was subtle, but chic. It's not great, but I'm not disappointed either.

To think of it, men (especially the ones I know, except Curtis) don't care that much about hair. Maybe I'll buy a new pair of heels next time instead.

Johnny gave me a blow out today that was amazing. Just needed a quick wash and set look for a hot date out. I walked in with no appointment and he happened to have a cancelled appointment. He made me look like a sex pot. Awesome. Good job, Johnny.

I live in Arlington and have no qualms about driving out to Silver Spring just to get a haircut (and the best shampoo job EVER). After one particularly horrendous hair butchering, I reached out to Jesslyn at Alchemy and not only did she fix my hair, I came out with a new haircut and a new hairstylist for life. She's amazing. I trust her so much I've even let her experiment with some highlights in my hair. Which also turned out aaaaaaaaaaamazing.

My boyfriend, who's idea of a haircut involved growing his hair out until it covered his face and then #4 razoring it, went to an appointment I set for him with Jess. He loved the cut and now reminds me to book an appointment for him whenever I'm scheduling mine. Once again, she's amazing.

I live on Capitol Hill and trek up to Silver Spring to get my hair cut by Gwen.  That kinds of says it all. After trying every salon on the Hill, in Georgetown, Chinatown... I tried Alchemy since my friend Lauren said Gwen is the only person who know how to cut curly hair... Gwen is a star but the whole place is great with great products, high quality service and cool haircuts. Seriously! Gotta try it out!!!!

I live all the way in Falls Church and I know good hair when I see it because I am hair stylist myself. But don't worry, I'm not boasting my own salon (I work in Bethesda!). Alchemy salon is an amazing establishment complete with customer service and an upbeat and hip (yet not TOO in your face) environment. The shampoo chairs & technicians ARE amazing as are the majority of the stylists working there. Gwen has been cutting & coloring my curly red hair for 5 + years and I won't let anybody else touch my hair! I heart Alchemy salon!

Julia was my stylist, and she did a FANTASTIC job...I wanted a change from my long-ish hair, but often I've been disappointed in the shorter styles I've tried.  She gave me just what I wanted, and I continue to enjoy my new cut however I choose to style it.  Those massaging shampoo chairs don't hurt either.

Overall, nice ambiance, good service, and reasonable prices.

Love this place. It is kind of spendy, but since you get what you paid for, I ALWAYS leave happy. I am also happy the next day. It's already hard to get into my stylist, so I will refrain from saying her name. Seriously, she is that good. I always get compliments on my cut and color (highlights) long after my appointment.

The parking does suck. It is a really busy shopping area, so as others have mentioned, do plan ahead.

I love Jesslyn. She's very skilled, my last cut with her not only looked good after she did it, but it also grew out beautifully which is so hard to find. More than that, she's really friendly and easy to talk to and makes the experience a great one from start to finish.

Alchemy did a pretty good job on my hair- I had highlights done for my wedding about a year ago. The reason why I gave 2 stars is because of the service and price. I had the stylist who was very "experienced" according to the front desk (asked for someone who had experience with highlights). But overall had rude service and a high price tag. That being said, if you have a special occasion coming up and are willing to pay, it might be worth it.

The search has ended! I have been a mop-top nomad for months since leaving a certain iconic (and apparently lewd!) DC stylist after 13 years. I had my short list of top-rated Yelp salons and made my calls. Immortal Beloved gave me their voicemail all day Saturday, so Alchemy won my appointment by default. I'm so happy that they did! I decided to try Gwen based on Yelp reviews. She was truly amazing--detail-oriented, unbelievably knowledgeable, well trained--a master of her craft!  I was worried about going to a suburban salon and losing my downtown edge. No worries--I look fabulous--salon search complete!!

Liked the staff sort of, disliked the way my hair turned out. Alchemy talks a great game and has a great philosophy behind their business but unfortunately they do not have "the goods to back it up". In my situation, either the color or toner was the wrong strength or left on too long, or applied to far down the already colored strands OR all of the above b/c my long straight hair is now a choppy and frayed bob cut. Over two feet of my hair literally broke off leaving me with stringy pieces no longer then about a half an inch past my eyebrows. I had gone in for a root touch up and now all I have left is those roots. All of my previously colored hair began breaking off about two weeks after my visit to Alchemy. Interestingly enough I had a color consultation with the salon the day prior to the actual appointment and I was totally at ease with what they told me the game plan was and how they could tailor my color needs. This has been a difficult adjustment for me as I have worn my hair very "long" (bust line or longer) ever since I can remember. It will take me about 4-6 years to grow back the length that was broken off as my hair grows very slow. Sure the place is nice looking and the like I said the staff is nice enough for the most part (they gave me several free samples of product to bring home, loved the cucumber water and scalp massage.  Also, when I was left in the chair with the toner on, my stylist forgot about me and another random stylist came and asked if I was okay and adjusted my chair telling me this wasn't the first time my stylist forgot about a client.  All this aside, the actual service I went in for & paid for turned out to be a huge disappointment and unsatisfactory to say the least. Furthermore you can tell that the highlights would have grown out flawlessly and I would have loved that. If you go in for color, PLEASE save yourself the heartache and make sure the stylist you go to is an experienced colorist and gives you some type of warranty about their service's if your hair breaks off within a week you get a refund or at least product credit, or even extensions ha!). I called the following day and told her that my hair started breaking and she said that she did not know what I wanted her to say or do. I asked what she would do if it was her hair and she said that doesn't matter b/c she would never get highlights on her own hair but she did recommend a shampoo to me. If I could give this experience a lower ranking I most definitely would. And to top all of this off, while I was there, some of the employees were talking about how they had their friends make yelp profiles and post positive reviews about the salon resulting in a biased rating.
