Review from Gourmet G.
San Francisco, CA
Designed and built in 1917 by San Francisco architect T Patterson Ross, who was also responsible for homes in Presidio Heights and atop Russian Hill, this stunning, Moroccan-inspired landmark unfortunately suffers from its location at the very scruffy western end of the Union Square theater district. As a result, it's used only sporadically as a venue for musical revues, one-person shows, and cabaret-style productions. It's a pity, because the small but attractive auditorium has comfortable seats, great sightlines, and perfect acoustics. There's a nice lounge with a bar for pre-performance and intermission refreshments, and huge French doors that open onto a balcony overlooking this decidedly iffy stretch of Geary between Jones and Leavenworth. If the show itself is less than captivating, at least the street scene will hold your interest.
