woo-hoo! Love me some Alcatraz pizza. I work nearby, so I usually come here at least once a week. lol. The employees and the owner are cool....
They sell pizza by the slice, you can get a slice of cheese and a soda for under $5. Or you could buy a whole pizza, they have quirky names that relate to Alcatraz which is, ummm...kinda cool. Everytime I come here their menu has expanded, I just tried their spaghetti and meatballs... YUM!
Try it if your in the area, but it's not a great place for a big group. -
Review from Jason B.
The most memorable part of the experience was the menu listing "house made" salads. That always gives me a chuckle. Never as impressive as house cured meat, or house granola, or a house veggie burger. Or any number of other things.
But to the pizza itself, eh, I've had better, I've had worse. Service was friendly, didn't cost much, slice had been sitting there a while, but it was good sized. A-OK. -

A cardboard.
FXXXin' Cardboard piece of shit calling Pizza?
Why you put a pizza for slice right on the oven?
Dumbass.
I know what you thinking.
You are thinking that keep the pizza warm, right?
Wrong!
You are making the pizza still cooking that's why the pizza is hard and stiff like a son of a bitch!
It's a Frisbee.
It'll fly.
Sorry man, I won't go back because I still can see that a pizza right on top of the oven from the street.
You gotto put the pizza OFF from the oven.
I wanted this place better because there is another Brazilian Pizza place right next and the Brazilian Pizza sucks a big time.
Disappointed, very disappointed!!!
2 BS Pizza places on the same Street, Alcatraz and Brazilian Pizza, Two thumbs down!!!Listed in: PIZZA NAZI, Most Ugly Restaurants, Pizza Nazi

Review from Todd B.
San Francisco, CA
I grew up on New York pizza, so my standards are high. Naming a pizza place "Alcatraz" didn't bode well for this place, but the framed picture of Donny Baseball ready to swing boosted my confidence.
This is a decent slice of pizza - I'd rank it just below Arinells and Bus Stop among New York style slices in SF. The crust thickness and sauce-cheese ratios were right-on (as opposed to the thick doughy bottom and cheese that falls off in clumps at most places here). The slice was served with a nice sheen of oil on top, the way it's supposed to be.
There was still that magic something missing - that bit of toughness that probably comes from the water. I suspect the pizza will improve as the ovens age and develop some character.
They also have all some pastas and lots of specialties pies on the menu to try. This is near Galileo High School, so watch out for a huge lunch crowd 12:20 -1 (earlier on Tuesdays). -

The prefect spot for a lunch-time slice.
Inexpensive, quick, and a damn-fine slice. Thin crust, New York style, big slices, cooked to perfection.
::edit::Earlier this week I had the joy of experiencing Alcatraz's Cheeseburger and Fries. It was a delicious burger, but those fries man, INCREDIBLE. Boardwalk-style fries. Big and delicious, dusted in some sort of chili powder type-dealy. ::/edit::
Great employees and great service.
The place is really small, probably a total of 6 stools to sit on, perhaps not the greatest place to dine in if you have a large crowd.Listed in: Top Restaurants

I walked in and had a couple of huge slices this afternoon. If you like crust, this is not the pizzeria for you as the entire crust from edge to edge is very thin and crispy. Good toppings but the cheese doesn't stretch too far which probably means there is not enough of it.
I had a slice of "The Rock" with pepperoni, salami, black olives and onion. It was a bit on the oily side as pepperoni and salami usually are, but it was very good. "The Birdman" brought together a familiar combination for me of pesto, roasted chicken, spinach and sun-dried tomatoes. I had a similar combination at Little Star Pizza just a few weeks ago. Little Star's tasted a little better, but the Alcatraz version is close.
The pizza chef was roasting garlic in the oven at the time of my visit which created all sorts of sensations with my senses. Quite small ... there are two separate counters with stools for a total of 10 diners inside. Good, friendly service.Listed in: Viva Italia!

Pizza was OK. Ready exactly on time (we picked up) with toppings to our specifications. Smelled great and tasted fine, though much cheesier than expected and not on a thin crust as mentioned in other reviews. Two slices was plenty.
Though we didn't eat in, we noticed the empty dining area was not very inviting--counters littered with crumbs, trash can overflowing with greasy paper plates. The white tile floor looked like it hadn't been mopped in months. Maybe we caught them at the end of a busy afternoon. -

My experience at Alcatraz Pizzaria is an okay one. A few days ago, when we arrived to our hotel nearby, we were starving and saw a flier for the place. With hunger motivating us, we went and got a pizza pie!
So the pizza itself is very greasy and the toppings were not fresh but plentiful. Bite after bite was filled with stringy oily cheese but at least it was flavorful. Not sure if I'd eat there again but it wasn't a bad experience! -
Review from Chelsea R.
Pros: Very thin crust pizza (three stars for that alone-- I hate thick goopey crust); overall good flavor, typically stays open very late on weekends. Not overly greasy, and the pizza is typically warmed up for you right when you come in.
Cons: Pretty mediocre storefront and ambiance. The pizza has no fatal flaws but is not exceptional- a decent neighborhood joint, but probably not going to become a destination pizzeria
Caveats: I dont think I've ever been here sober, or outside of that magical time slot between 1 and 2 AM. Then again, the same could probably be said for a large percentage of their clientele, so perhaps it's a rather accurate perspective from which to cast judgement -

Not impressed.
1) no bathroom
2) my slice was lukewarm at best
3) pizza was good, but not memorable.
I can't imagine I'll be back -

I worked so much today that I forgot about lunch... 3:30PM rolls around and I hear my stomach growl at me. I think Oooo Pizza... would I ever on a work day? YES, so I did... I went to Alcatraz pizza, a block from work and ate a delicious Italian Sausage Sandwich. It ended up being huge and could only eat about 4 or 5 bits, but the most delicious part of my day so far.

Decent pizza but the cost is very high.. Their pizza reminds me of Costco pizza but alotta bit more expensive. But it was still decent and had no issues defeating my hunger. I gave it two tries to acquire at least 4 stars but I just can't seem to come up with a reason why too. The pizza is also a little oily, and the topping both timed was not very fresh.

I live down the street so this place is incredibly convenient. I love pizza by the slice! I haven't tried any of the other menu items but they look good. It's definitely not the best pizza in the world but I have to give it credit for being so close to my apartment (and cheap in an area full of over overpriced tourist traps).

I ordered delivery from this place for the first time tonight. I ordered the XL combo + garlic bread. The pizza is just OK. I would rate it comparable to a safeway take and bake style pizza in terms of quality. Its not bad but for the price I probably wont order from here again. $20ish for an XL is generally not a bad deal, but again for $6.99 you can get the same quality at safeway.

Ummm I'm done with this place. Incredibly slow with or without Gallileo kids.....the dude that took my money for my salad went right back to making pizzas with no hand washing. I wanted to use my lunch to grab something quickly and before I knew it I was rushing to make it back from being gone so long. I just leave super frustrated wondering why I do these to myself.
.................................................. .................................................. ..........................
All in all I would give the pizza and salad I had four stars. The service needs improvement. They are new and I can't imagine dealing with Gallileo kids is a walk in the park but still. Hoping they improve on their timing. Like today for instance, ordered a slice of cheese and a small salad. All of this was around 6 bones....not bad. They gave my salad to the person behind me when they announced that it was ready and then it took them forever to make my friend's salad and my replacement salad. I had my pizza in a box getting cold all the while. I would go back though as the slice was pretty damn good and the salad was big (for a side salad). Hopefully with time they iron these kinks out. -

This is truly a must-stop in San Francisco. Great food, better service. Very friendly and positive staff; everyone is nice and loves to make jokes and create an over all memorable experience. Sometimes may take a few extra mins to prep the food, but that's because they make it fresh every time - well worth the wait.

San Francisco, CA
$2.50 for a cheese slice. Thick outer crust that tapers quickly to the thin middle and inner section that has a well done crust, tons of cheese and a hint of sauce. I like a high cheese to sauce ratio but this pizza has the least amount of sauce I've ever seen even less than Roma! I enjoyed it a lot! Alcatraz was closed for a while and has been redone. It's clean has a small counter on both sides with window seating and no tables. Soft drinks only. Stays open late.

I really like this place. The pizza is good and while I have only tried a couple of their other items so far, all has been really good. They use quality ingredients and you can tell. Slices are good sized. Plus, the people that work there are pleasant and polite...which is a huge plus to me.

All my husband wanted for lunch yesterday was a pizza. Wow the old pizza place we normally go to in Ghirardelli is closed - has it been that long? So Rey asked around and someone told us to go about a block up the street. Wow we got 3.00 off - why just because!!! The pizza is really good - it kinda melts in your mouth - the toppings fall off when you pick up a slice so its alittle messy but so worth it!

I work down the street and its gross. The pizza is never fresh. I've gone one time before and the it was disgusting. I decided to give it a second chance b/c everyone has their bad days and the guy tried to charge me $1.50 for a CAN of soda. A CAN and the pizza again was pretty gross. Now I know to never go there again....SIGH of disappointment

Nice thin crust. Quite tasty, but I think I'd like a little more cheese. We'll definitely be back though.

Palo Alto, CA
this may be the worst restaurant in san francisco. first of all, they deliver but took about 1.5 hours to deliver two blocks away. then...
1. forgot to put dressing on two caesar salads
2. forgot one entire meal
3. forgot silverware and condiments
4. use styrofoam to go containers (against the law in sf)
5. brought regular coke instead of diet
6. the delivery guy was wearing a polyester suit
7. ran away before we even knew any of this happened
i would stay away. another tourist restaurant that doesn't care because tourists aren't repeat customers and so it's easy for them to get away with this crap. -

I give it 3 stars cause my extremely generous friend kept ordering XL pizzas (each with 12 HUGE slices) at 3am in the morning (to feed only 20 people) and the guy didnt complain once even though we had totally raided the entire joint.
The pizza itself was good...plenty of vegetables though sometimes too many such that they would fall off (thus dragging the cheese, sauce, etc) the slice as you were taking it out of the box. I'm glad I ate my slice before we noticed that the owner dude's pants were so low you could see 2 inches of that which you did not want to see. that memory will haunt me forever. -

At 10:30 am on Wednesday morning I placed an order for four Alcatraz Specials, two Caesar and two Greek Salads and guess what, in 49 miniuts the order was in our small office in downtown. It seems to me that people in San Francisco are spoiled. Whenever they got a bad serice they jump to Yelp to complain. Whenever they get great service they forget to express themesleves. I believe this is a best pizzeria in San Francisco. Way to go, Alcatraz!

I had delivery, and it just wasn't very good. The cheese smelled funny, the sauce was a kind of runny. They also messed up my drink order. Given all the good reviews here, maybe they just had an off night.
