First impressions: Hmm...kinda sketch, kinda shady but what's that? The scent of sweet, sweet tamales!
Alberto's Tamales is no fancy schmany place and they make no point to hide it. It's a small locale with a black wrought-iron door that I nearly walked past until my co-worker pointed it out. Grimy atmosphere aside, people come here not to gawk at the walls but at the tamales! And boy, these tamales do not disappoint.
At $1.35 each, these tamales are not only delicious but cheap! I told the cashiers my order and he pulled out from behind the counter, 2 chicken w/ green chili and 1 red sauce with pork. He put them gingerly in brown butcher paper, wrapped it all up in a bag and off we went.
My favorite out of the 2 choices was definitely the chicken w/ green chili. As a spicy-phile, the tender cuts of chicken melded perfectly with the spicy nuances of the green chili. It was a delightful lunch and to think, my entire meal was under $5!
Bottom-line: Alberto's Tamales is a must if you're in the neighborhood. Heck, it's a must even if you're NOT in the neighborhood. They're just that good. -

I like tamales and these are good because masa is just the right consistency and they have a variety of fillings. My favorite are the mole tamal and the rajas con queso. I would give it 4 stars but I think they are a little over priced, but since its in my neighborhood I go often.
I also wish they sold champurrado to go with the tamales or at least hot chocolate. -

Tamalin/Mr. Peanut look alike outside is so cute. If the giant TAMALES part of the shop's name doesn't draw you in, their mascot certainly will.
It's cozy little shop that churns out a good variety sweet and savory tamales. My friends and I dropped in as we walked across the city to pick up some snacks to get us through the day. I ordered a sweet tamal de piña which was actually just the right texture and sweetness. The flavor wasn't cloying and the texture was perfectly firm without being dense or sticky.
My friend picked up a tamal de pollo con mole (chicken mole). It totally tasted like the mole was Doña Maria, which you can get in any supermarket. Still, it had the same lovely texture as the sweet version I had. -

Nope. Not even close. THe guy was weird or else this place seemed shady. Or could be that its just weird to see a bunch of guys making tamales after years and years of woman-centered tamaladas. But back to the food, the taste. Not very good at all.

Review from Kay Y.
I went out of my way to yet another over-rated place. These are supposed to be the best tamales in LA? Come on.
I purchased a dozen ($15) of each type and thought they were OK compared to the many other tamales I've had. I even shared them at work with six co-workers. Only one person came back with both a good and bad comment which was the chicken and sauce are good but needs more of chicken.
Remember to steam them (not nuke them) in order to rehydrate the masa. Otherwise you'll really have a mediocre tamale on your hands.
Out of all of them, the chicken was my favorite. The green chile and cheese, which is usually my favorite, did not have enough of either filling and was short on flavor.
Tamara's tamales on the West-side is the only tamale place that I think is ahead of the tamale game; however, they are over twice the price, making Alberto's the better value. -

My favorite tamales in Los Angeles. I would like to leave it at that.
But I won't. The ambiance at Alberto tamales is nothing to write home about, it is fast-food casual. A few clean tables await and a sweet view of a burgeoning block of Echo Park. *My favorite one.
The clientele is a Hodgepodge mix of vetted tamale connoisseurs, waspy Silver lake takeout patrons and groovy hipsters donning fresh ink. Most frequently, the tamales are ordered to-go by returning friends.
You might overhear special requests from the regulars like, "Can I have some extra roja and mole please?" Or "Do you have any extra green sauce?"
Made by hand, like they should be made, and handled with great affection, this small venue delves their tasty, masa morsels with reverence and knowing smiles. Depending on who are served by, you will get a different dose of tamales each time you say, as I do: "Give me your favorite."
What makes these my favorite tamales? I like spicy things. I don't like dry tamales. I like a lot of filling inside my tamales. I like sauces served with my tamales and finally, I like to eat things that taste delicious.
I adore all of the savory varieties so far, I have never tried the sweet ones. No mi gusta. ( I do not like them) The tamales here are very large and only $1.50 each! Two of these tamales would make the most famished full. Three of these might put you in the hospital.
Sold one at a time, or discounted by the dozen, these tamales are wrapped tenderly while still steaming so that even if you are trekking back to Pasadena before sitting down to your favorite murder mystery before you indulge, they will still be piping hot.
The wrapping of the tamales leaves clear imprints, like the well-ironed pleats in a new pair of pants. They display a glossy sheen to emphasize their exceedingly moist nature.
Alberto tamales is on the south side of Temple, near Glendale Blvd., within walking distance from public transit lines and Echo Park Lake. Which, consequently, is where you should be headed with your bakers dozen of steaming-hot tamales to feed the whole family for the bargain price of crazy cheap. ($15)
The mole con pollo (chicken mole) is a little sweet, spicy and very rich. The mole is very dark with a hint of cocoa and nuts. The rojas con puerco, (pork with red sauce) has tender shredded pork and a smokey red sauce (tamarind?)
The frijol con queso (bean and cheese) is one of my favorites because the beans are made fresh and last time I tried them it was filled with creamy black beans and stringy white cheese.*drools* YUM. The pollo verde (chicken with green sauce) is a little spicy, made with white meat chicken and a tart hint of tamatillo.
Gluten-free friends, these tamales are the comfort food you have been looking for since the sandwich is as off -limits to you as the pizza.:-( Always inquire about mole as it is often made with bread crumbs or crackers, *especially if the mole is not made in-house, from scratch. Ask for the tamales with no harina (no flour) no pan (no bread). So far none of these tasty devils are forbidden me for my allergy concerns. *Loosens belt*
I hope that you get a chance to try this little gem and I hope you love it. What am I talking about?!!! Scratch that. I hope that you get a chance to try this place friends, I KNOW that you will love it. Alberto's will treat you right; like familia. (like family:-) -

Fa la la la.
Yeah it's that time of year again, what time you ask?, the time you'll be eating tamales every day for weeks then you'll be so sick of them you won't want to see them for another year!.
So I've passed Tamales Alberto many times and never noticed it, guess because it's not tacos! but thanks to Mary B and her "ROTD" worthy review I went to check things out and got a dozen assorted tamales, unfortunately I found several issues and I gotta keep it real so I hope she won't be too mad with me.
Pork - http://www.yelp.com/bi... I do like how the masa is thin unfortunately they did not spread quite enough as the filling is exposed and masa was slightly undercooked, I wish the pieces of pork were a little bigger and thought the red sauce was just ok, not bad but nothing special http://www.yelp.com/bi... 2.5-Stars
Cheese - http://www.yelp.com/bi... Another tamale that they did not spread quite enough masa as the filling is exposed and masa was slightly undercooked, cheese (Jack) slice was very small and thought sauce was bland, http://www.yelp.com/bi...
this was my least favorite of the four and very disappointing as I really like cheese tamales. 1-Star
Chicken - http://www.yelp.com/bi... (Sorry for the bad photo) This was way undercooked and just fell apart http://www.yelp.com/bi... which is unfortunate because I thought the filling chicken and verde/green sauce was great! 2-Stars
Mole - http://www.yelp.com/bi... I was excited what I saw that they have mole tamales as most places don't, now this is a beautiful tamale, cooked perfectly, masa still has some moisture, nice thickness or shall I say thinness and plenty of delicious mole con pollo - mole w/chicken http://www.yelp.com/bi... 5-Stars
Had all the tamales been as good as the Mole tamales this would be a 5-Star place with no question, unfortunately the tamales I got were......?
I'll definitely give them another try since the major issue was with the masa and not being cooked long enough, but for now it is what it is!.
AVG: 2.5-Stars -

This little hole-in-the-wall sells tamales. Only. And they are very, very good.
My advice: bring a large heat-pac bag, and cash/check (they don't accept credit cards). Each tamale costs between $1.30 - $1.50, depending on the filling. Enter and select your baker's dozen (Or two. Or three...), pay, and smuggle your stash home. Eat with vigor and joy.
p.s. there's free salsa to accompany in the fridge next to the cashier's. -

Best tamales in LA, its a hole in a wall place but i am soo lucky to live like 5 mins driving distance away lol I love their corn/beef/pork tamales.
Their chicken is a bit spicy for me.. But its the best tamale I ever have. -

I stopped here on a whim after reading some reviews touting their tamales as some of L.A.'s best. The place itself is what you would expect from any fast food place in the area - a hole in the wall with a few tables. But who cares? It's about the tamales. I'm no vetted connoisseur, but here are my two cents, anyway:
Queso y jalapeno: tasteless except for the small sliver of unmelted cheese and slice of jalepeno.
Mole con pollo: the rich, dark sauce was completely delicious. I will be back for this one.
Rojos: just spicy enough, with plenty of pork in the filling.
I kind of disappointed by how little filling all of my tamales contained, but the masa was really moist and delicious, so it wasn't a total loss. The tamales were rather small, too, which surprised me given some other peoples' reviews on here - I wasn't very full at all after three. For me, it doesn't really matter either way if the tamales are small - they're cheap and you get what you pay for, right? I guess I was just expecting more since they're so highly rated.
I'll definitely be back - I want to try every flavor! -
Review from Angela O.
My, my.
I have NEVER in all my years had tamales this good.
And something must be wrong, because I got out with 4 (count 'em) jalapeño and cheese tamales, and 2 pork and salsa verde tamales, for $5. Now, they didn't have change, but as I left, I kept waiting in the alley for them to call me back and tell me there had been a mistake.
I walked home.
I ate a jalapeño one.
I nearly cried. Not from the heat, though it was there, both the spice (thank god! I HATE bland food that's supposed to be hot!), and from the mere, sheer freshness of the tamale. The masa was soft and buttery, the cheese more plentiful than my friend's QUESADILLA last night.
I'm a-gonna get fat.

A true Tamale Joint -- Alberto's is a small place with poor ventilation, a few tiny tables and some of the best tamales in town. Knowing how to order food in Spanish doesn't hurt here because this isn't a Gringo spot -- that means it's really good.
The menu -- tamales. You can choose from different meats (chicken, pork) or even chicken mole! Then have banana husked tamales as well. They're all delicious and you can literally feast for under $5/person.
I'm probably the only one who likes to go to Pho Siam Thai Massage (around the corner) and come here afterward for tamales....

Maybe I just visited this place on a bad day. I had a craving for tamales for weeks. I went to yelp read the reviews and this was the place.
Got the guy and his daughter together and off we went. Ready to experience great tamales...
We walked in and the place was empty and we all started looking at the menu. A woman came in the room from the kitchen and asked if we were ready to order. I said I needed another moment and guy ordered for himself and his daughter. Then I ordered two beef tamales without looking at me she says they are out so I ordered two cheese tamales. Then she rings us up and I hand her money and as she is giving the change back she says sir and slides the change towards him. WTF?!?! I am standing right in front of her. He gets the change hands it to me and gets out drinks.
We sit down and she brings our food to us and at that moment another family comes in and starts ordering before she is even behind the counter. They ordered 3 dozen BEEF tamales and three single beef tamales for right now. She rings them up; she doesn't say they are out. And no one else came out of that kitchen in the time that I ordered and they ordered.
Where did the beef tamales come from?
I got up threw my food away and we went to Carl's Jr.
The guy says the sweet tamales were good and the cheese was good from the few bites I had. But her attitude and utter lack of customer service ruined it 100% for me. I can get handle poor service it happens, I get that but just rudeness that I still don't understand why she treated me like that I cannot get down with, -

LA LA LA LA LA LA LOVE THIS PLACE!!
I was craving for tamales yesterday and I searched yelp for the best tamales and YELP didn't let me down. I came here, expecting an alright experience but oh boy was I wrong!! I'm filipino so I didn't know what the heck the menu said and I was standing in front of the cashier/tamale maker guy for awhile. LOL So I just said "can I just have pork tamale" LMFAO! Pretty well said!! I absolutely loved the pork tamale and for the price of $1.25, ohhh boy what a steal!! The red chili sauce inside the pork tamale is my favorite!! The chicken tamale was alright with the salsa verde but my ultimate favorite was the PORK!! You just can't go wrong with it. -

This place is awesome. My friend from Seattle really wanted good Mexican food while he was visiting so I naturally jumped on Yelp to see what I could find, and luckily I found Alberto Tamales. i was really excited because I love tamales. My brother and I make them at least once a year and after making them so many times I feel like I have pretty high tamale standards. Luckily this place did not disappoint.
We quickly found parking and after staring at the two side by side doors for a second (our hunger made us easy to confuse) we picked the right door. After looking at the menu we placed our order. The man working there (I'm assuming Alberto?) didn't really speak English and I don't really speak Spanish. Luckily I know enough to translate the menu (yay for pollo and queso!) for my friend and instantly got our tamales. They are small, but filling and flavorful. And for $1.35 each they are a great deal. I really liked the Verde Pollo and my friend liked the Raja Queso. Both of us were a little disappointed by the Mole Pollo and they were a tiny bit dry. That being said these were some of the best tamales I've had, and are a great option for when I don't have a free day to make my own. -

I ordered two chicken and two pork tamales ($1.25 each) for a humble Friday dinner. The tamales themselves aren't too big and can be consumed in a few bites. But they are good. The chicken was delectable and a bit spicy (I think it was chicken verde). The pork was tasty, though not as enjoyable as the chicken. Upon opening each tamale, your hands may get a bit greasy. Once you take a bite, it's so delicate it melts in your mouth.
The lady who took my order was very nice and heated up my tamales for me. The menu is entirely in Spanish, but you can ask them any question and they'll politely respond. -

Outstanding service and fantastic tamales! I placed an order for 10 dozen tamales last weekend after sampling several varieties the week before. They have so many types to choose from: verdes con pollo, mole con pollo, rojas con puerco, rajas con queso, vegetariano, frijol con queso, dulce pina, dulce fresa, picadillo, de elote, and Oaxacano. Most types cost $1.25 per tamale, or $13 per dozen. All varieties we tried were delicious. Our guests liked how moist and tasty they were. And the two salsas we ordered on the side (verde and rojo...$4 each for the large size) were so good...pretty spicy though! Our lips were tingling.
It was a great experience ordering from Tamales Alberto. Very friendly service, and our order was ready on time. Plus we were tipped off to bring a cooler to keep the tamales warm until our party started. They stayed piping hot and fresh all night!
The shop opens early and closes at 2 pm. Get there early for the best selection. They have other food options to choose from aside from tamales, including some weekend specials. -

I ate these Tamales at the Tamale festival at MacArthur park Halloween weekend.
I ate the mole and salsa verde chicken bannana leaf tamales and was very impressed. I found the Mole to be of the perfect strength (note I'm not the biggest fan of Mole) and filled with a lot of chicken. The salsa verde had great flavor and quite a bit of a spicy kick.
Also ate the queso con rajas and pork tamales. Both filled with good amounts of ingredients and great spicy kick.
While they are excellent and well priced I docked one star because the flavor could have been more powerful. -

After 3 visits I can still maintain these are the best tamales I have had and cheap too!!!! I have decided the verde pollo and the rajas con queso are my favs but the sweet corn was a nice mix to cool things down. I mean $5 for a 4 at lunch time is a steal and they are piping hot. This place is directly off the Union exit south on the 101 just too easy to pass up!!!!

I've been craving some good tamales after being so disappointed on tasting Portos' tamales last Sunday, so I went to yelp and searched for tamales. An hour after reading the reviews and more Google-ing I picked up my son, Justin from school then off we go. I was a little taken a back with the location, as my son said "We should've taken daddy with us, they have a lot of graffiti on the walls. But I have to say, there a little good" hahaha good thing there was parking in front of the store so in we go. I have to say the inside was so much better than the outside (No door knob LOL), but you have to know a little Spanish to order something. The server didn't smile one bit and when I said "I want 1 of each" he immediately said "NO INGLES!' not in a nice way! But I really wanted some tamales, so I read to the best Spanish accent I have everything on their menu and and said Uno. The guy nodded and wrapped a total of 12 tamales, he was kind enough to write what's inside of each. The Price was so cheap each tamales is $1.50 but if you buy a dozen it's $14.50. They also accept VISA and MASTER with $1.00 fee.
So as soon as we got home Justin and I had a tamales party! We sampled all of them!
Pork - So good (will buy again)
Beef - So good too
Mole - My son loved it, not my cup of tea though (a little sweet)
Chicken w/green salsa - Spicy and good but mine had a little more sauce that made the masa a little wet for my liking
Strawberry - Good and it's pink!
Cheese - My fave!
Corn - Didn't like the texture but ok.
Pineapple - Didn't care for it.
I know I had 12 but I can't remember the other ones.
All in all good tamales! Will be back to buy again with my hubby next time LOL! -

Unwrap the husk on an Alberto tamale and taste what steam can do to maize, lard and meat. Alberto's is a tiny kitchen on Temple that only makes tamales. Walk up and order or call ahead (they might only speak spanish but that only adds to the excitement). I ordered 3 dozen assorted (chicken, pork, veggy) for a birthday party and they were beloved by all. You can even get sweet strawberry tamales for dessert.

Ok the decor is sparse but I have been eating these prepackaged tamales and hate them-really I had decided i don't even like tamales but then I had these. I should have known because they have a little attitude here-just proud really and cheap too for three dollars you can get a good meal---the kind that puts you in a better mood. These tamales cheered me up.

After reading its reviews here, i decided to give this place a chance. It's that time of year where fatty foods are a necessity and tamales are a sure thing to add an extra pound or two of fat. I got here ten minutes after seven on a friday night and the place was closed. However there was still a light on inside and some guy in the kitchen. I asked him if they were closed and he said "Si." BUT! He also said that he'd sell me a dozen if that was all i required. Fortunately for me it was and i was not disappointed. The meet to maza ratio was just right and on top of that, they were pretty great! I'd give this place five stars if i had the opportunity to dine in but it also may have worked in my favor in the event that the service sucked. Good eating!

I have to agree with Mary B!! YUUUMMM!! I decided to have tamales for our family holiday party and Alberto's was a HUGE hit. Their tamales are so good!! My favorites are the chicken mole, cheese/jalepeno, and the sweet corn.
I placed our order for Christmas Day.... tamales, enchiladas, rice and beans. Picked everything up at 2 on the 25th placed in the warming trays and everyone enjoyed....the best party ever!!!
Thank you Alberto's!!! -

This place has the bomb tamales. When you walk in, its about as hole in the wall as you can possibly image. Theres two tables and an open view of the kitchen where usually you'll see a small huddle of people wrapping tamales. The english here is very minimal.... the cashier understands the words chicken, pork, beef, and cheese. If you need to place a big order, its usually wise to call them in advance and let them know since they dont always keep a ready stock of all tamale types. The only reason I took a star off was for potential sanitation hazards, but at $1 a tamale (if you order a dozen) I'll take my chances.

I've searched for a good tamale for so long and my gosh, I've finally found it.
This isn't your regular Albertsons deli kind of tamale, but genuine MOIST tamale. Some places make it so hard that you find yourself having to chew through all the corn, but not this place. As it reaches your mouth, it almost melts in your mouth along with all the tasty filling.
I had the "rojas con puerco" and a "rajas con queso" so far. I can't wait to try the mole and chicken verde later! Definitely leave with at least a dozen with you! -

Well-priced tamales - $13 for a dozen. The tamales here are shaped longer and skinnier than the ones at La Mascota or La Indiana, and are also well-priced. I like this kind of tamale better than other kinds - the masa is moist and mealy with very tender stuffing.

I frequently drive past Alberto's on my way to work and since I LOVE tamales one morning, I thought, " What the heck, the health department gave them an A. If Anthony Bourdain can do it, so can I." The best and most authentic food is always found at hole-in-the-wall places.
Now, I'm a total blond hair, blue eyed gringa and have to fumble with my high school spanish but the staff was very friendly and communication wasn't a problem. I took tamales to my office and everyone RAVED about them. They don't always have a lot of heated tamales on hand early in the morning so if I'm picking them up for work, I have a spanish speaking friend call in the order for me a day ahead and the tamales are ready for pick up.
Everybody says Alberto's tamales are the best! My favorite are the pollo con chile verde. They are spicy, tasty and the filling and masa are well proportioned. They are very reasonably priced. I've seen a Tamales Alberto van in the neighborhood so I assume they will deliver if you order enough of them for an event.
Gracias Alberto! -

Here is a gem of a little place on Temple near Glendale blvd. These are fantastic tamales ! The price is right at only $13 a dozen ! I love the Chicken w/ green chile. They also have Pork as well as Queso w/ red chile...For a quick, easy way to fill your belly this place hits the spot !
