My favorite monument in DC. Probably because most people don't know it's even there. He's a little hard to find and some seasons he's hidden by the trees. Unlike the other monuments you can climb on Albert Einstein and take cool pictures.

I found it, I found it! Finally! I know, it's on the map, it can't be that hard to find, right? But it's currently in the middle of a small construction site. You can't get close and sit on his lap or anything.

But I hope in the future, when the construction around the National Academy of Sciences is done, to come back and get my picture taken with Einstein.

What is real? Who are we?
    E=mc2. Theory of general relativity.
A magnetic pull sends you in my direction
Now ponder your life, pause for reflection
Come sit on my knee, come sing me a song
Unload your burdens, I judge not right or wrong
Through wormholes, cosmos, physics and light
A molecular fusion, a wondrous sight
Our energies collide under moon or sun
We are already connected; you, me, everyone

The Albert Einstein Memorial: 2101 Constitution Ave, NW
A mathematical pimp and hair enthusiast, Albert Einstein sits in the shadows of the Lincoln memorial willing to entertain anyone who dares cross the street. The ground is a celestial map of the sky and if you stand in the center, you get a single person echo when you talk to him. Hes hidden. catch him on the way to Lincoln Memorial!

After walking and running by this for years I finally noticed this and realized it's awesomeness. Highly recommended for nerds.

This is such a fun spot to visit. Of course, you should go with someone so one can hold the camera and take pics...or you need to be a good judge of people if asking some random peep to take your picture.

My suggestion, look for someone with a nicer camera than yours. Why would they want to steal your piece of crap?

It's a theory. Let me know if it works.

As for posing, climb all over him! I assume you you can't sue the city for falling off Einstein's shoulders and breaking your head open on the pavement. Why? Because there are no signs warning you of such a foolish act.

Einstein is very slippery. Who knew?

Another safety tip: in the cold of DC winter, putting your tongue on Einstein is not such a good idea. Again...theory. Let me know if that works ok for you I'm not trying it.

Epic fun. Sort of like a cat with a paper bag. It's hard to actually say WHY it's so cool, but it is.

    So deal with it.

Cozy place off the National Mall area.  Good spot if you want to sit down and eat and enjoy the people running around across the street.

Very hard statue to find at night so go in the day time

Awesome, not only because you can climb onto Albert's leg and take a Santa what-i-want-for-x-mas shot, but also if you stand in the middle of the semi-circle, your voice will echo. Very eerie.

Check out Albert's oversized head, and the stars and math formulas. Definitely a cool, quick memorial.

Closest metro is Foggy Bottom. And the walk from the mall is a good hike, but it is purty.

Go North from the Vietnam memorial, cross the street on Independence ave, and there on the grounds of the National Academy of Sciences, you will find the immortal Einstein, resting from the bustle of the Mall and reviewing some gigantic manuscripts.

Come sit on his lap--Einstein doesn't mind.  Feel the bronze craftsmanship, the folds of polished bronze.  "Ev=Hv-a," it says on his manuscripts.  If you look closer, you will recognize several other science formulas that no one really understands (except for Einstein, of course).  When you're tired of Einstein's lap, take a few steps back and stand on the dais (the circular stone floor encrusted with fake stars).  They say that if you talk to him, Einstein will echo something special back at you.

One of my personal favs in DC, and a nice place to escape the crowd.  Science lovers welcome.

One of the best memorials! I think its one of the only ones you can actually climb on, which makes it that much cooler!

It is a little hard to find... I would recommend what we did.. Google Map him and then watch your blue dot get closer to the red one.. haha...

Albert Einstein is awesome...and the fact that his foot left a dent in my sister's ankle after annoying me made my day.

Of course, karma bit me in the butt later that day when I hurt my ankle, but whatever :)

A really cool hideaway located just off the National Mall. The statue is very impressive and makes for an excellent photo op that most visitors to D.C. won't have. The site is usually never crowded. I recommend you visit the National Academy of Science while there.

This is one of the best kept secrets of DC. This little memorial / statue is at the end of the mall and across the street. It's behind a few trees, so very few people know it is there, but it is really neat and thoughtful. You can technically climb up and take pictures - things you can't really get away with at the other memorials and statues. I highly recommend this spot to all my first-time DC visitors.

Best monument in DC that nobody knows about.  You can climb on the damn thing if you want and stick pennies up his nose.  I love the solar system laid out at his feet too.  I used to go here just to read, only 4 or 5 blocks from home.  It has definitely become more popular recently, maybe due to the fact that they cut down all the trees that used to hide it from Constitution Avenue, something I'm not too happy about.

I have to agree with most everyone that this is such a cool, more 'hidden' memorial. I make a point to bring my out of town friends here for an awesome photo-opp whenever possible. It's pretty easy to get to, as well, if you are already doing the tourist/mall thing.

I love this big bronze statue of Einstein.  Technically referred to as the Albert Einstein Memorial.  This is one of those things that a lot of people just don't really seem to know is there.  It's in front of the National Academy of Sciences and is across Constitution Ave from the Vietnam Memorial.  I always make it a point to bring any out of town visitors here while visiting the monuments on the Mall and I always stop here if I am walking past it myself.  You are allowed to climb all over "Al", which is so much fun since so many things in DC are "hands off".  Everybody needs at least one picture of themselves sitting on Al's lap.  Be sure to check out the floor around you, as it is covered with metal studs representing stars, planets, galaxies, etc.  There are also some good Al quotes to be found around the monument.  If you stand at the center of the dais, it is said that Al will make direct eye contact with you and the words you speak to him will be oddly amplified.  So, for a relaxing place to do some work or reading or for just a fun place to climb all over a statue and take some good pictures, be sure to check out this obscure little spot.
