Astoria, Queens, NY
If ever there was a reason to let go of first impressions and give a place a second chance, then Alba's Pizza & Restaurant is it.
I had criteria when I first moved to Astoria, in search of a local haunt.
1. Budweiser on tap for my significant other.
2. And authentic Buffalo Wings for me.
I wanted to find a place that had great pizza with a frosty mug of beer as an excuse to not cook for him.
Swearing off carbohydrates, I also wanted to enjoy Buffalo Wings and a chilled glass of white wine for me.
On our first visit, last July, I asked the server if the wings were breaded. He replied "No", and I took him for his word.
I ordered wings and white wine, then we found out they don't offer Bud draft, only bottled.
First unhappy face.
The wings were then presented, obviously breaded.
Second unhappy face.
The server was eager to remedy my dismay by substituting complementary meatballs. This was a great gesture, but we crossed it off of our list of places to go back to.
Flash forward to tonight. My BF gave up beer for Lent, and I wanted a convenient place to meet for dinner.
He ordered pizza and diet coke.
I ordered white wine and Italian sausage w/peppers.
Seriously, this was the best Italian sausage I've ever tasted in NYC!
The pizza was awesome too!
It's now a happy face to know that I have this option to consider in my neighborhood.Listed in: My Astoria

Its the perfect pizzeria when you want something casual but not too casual. The pizza is good and the service is friendly in the NYC kind of way.

After 3 years of living in Astoria, this is our go-to pizza delivery spot. Always awesome. Don't doubt it.

Don't believe the haters. Albas has the best pizza in queens . For anyone new to Astoria I have been eating at albas for almost 20 years . The owners are have a passion that is creating this legacy . There is no other Italian establishment in astoria that can provide Astoria residents with true new york pizza made fesh daily with quality ingredients. Not to mention they have great service and good prices.
Thx albas -

OK, first of all, I used to think pizza on Ditmars sucked. None of the places around was any good, in my opinion. Perhaps I was a little spoiled having lived in the city for years, moving out to Astoria a few years ago, but I felt I could only get a decent slice in the city or Brooklyn. None of these joints proved me wrong either, so I was relegated to sandwiches from Sal, Kris and Charlie's (quite happily relegated).
One day, I was walking on Ditmars with our little girl, and she wanted a slice. What the hell, there's Alba's, get her and myself a slice or three. I don't know what has changed in three years, but their pizza in the afternoon was damn good. Ordered a large pie later that weekend, and it was stupendous.
Whatever they are currently doing, keep it up, Alba's. -

This is a short review. Do not order the sicilian pizza. It was too bready and the sauce average. That said, I will definitely give this place another try as there are a lot of items from which to choose.

Just had their Grandma pie. It was pretty good. Loved the Box (Grandma Pie Shaped Box). I still think Antonio's Pizza and Wine Bar (Astoria Heights) has the best Grandma Pie.
Nonetheless Alba's makes a decent Grandma Pie. -

The Grandma pizza tastes like Jesus.
Seriously.
You could rename it Jesus Pie.
Fantastic delivery service and a GLORIOUS spinach salad. -

I don't get it. I have tried them on more than one occasion and each time I am left feeling less than pleased. My husband and I tried their pizza and both agreed it was bland and the sauce was the worst pizza sauce we'd ever tried. After reading their rating on the Nyc Board of Health website I can honestly say that I will never frequent this joint again. Honestly, nothing else in the Ditmars neighborhood has impressed me.

Alba's makes a great simple slice. It's always a good size with a tasty cheese and sauce. The amount of cheese is always just right for me.
The chicken cutlet pizza is especially awesome.....mmmmmmmmmmm droooooool.
They have waiter service. It's okay. The warm bread that you get makes up for any problem with the service that you might have. Otherwise, it's just a mediocre experience.
They sell beer too, which is great. They have a few on tap (Guinness, seasonal beers, etc), as well as a number of bottles, and have some solid happy hour specials. Nothing beats going there, grabbing a few slices and a beer and relaxing for a half hour. I'd do it everyday if I could.
I think Alba's has the best regular slice in the neighborhood. I like Rose and Joe's for their Sicilian slice, but Alba's for their regular slices. Alba's is easily the best place to order a pie from in the area too. And you can order online. -

My boyfriend and I went to dinner with his parents here while they were visiting from out of town. We originally wanted to eat at Taverna Kyclades, but they had a rather long wait, so we stumbled upon Alba's, which is right across the street.
Our waiter was friendly and attentive. My boyfriend and I shared a personal sized pesto chicken pizza (yes, it was definitely big enough for the 2 of us to share...and we even had a slice left over!). It was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. I would eat here again, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so. -

I love Alba's.
The pizza is great. The standard cheese pie is a high quality thin crust, round pizza. While it is simple, it's VERY good; tasty sauce and in good proportion to the cheese, nice THIN crust.
Alba's also has a secret weapon: the penne vodka pie. The idea is this: take a pizza, dump a bunch of penne pasta on it, drown it in pink vodka sauce, and chuck it in the oven. It is sinfully decadent and far more delicious than you can imagine. I understand that it is likely taking some time off my lifespan (those are probably bad years anyway) and it's totally worth it. You owe it to yourself to try this.
Prices are reasonable. Eat in is decent, as the service is quick and courteous. Delivery is excellent, as the person answering the phone is easy to understand and gets the orders right. Delivery is fast, usually quicker than the estimated time.
The thing that sucks about Alba's? They close painfully early. Even on weekends. C'mon, man!
I still love Alba's; they just aren't a late night option. -

This place is great! I was walking home one day and actually saw an employee with a Rizzo's t-shirt carrying a Alba's Pizza box. Have never tried Rizzo's but if an employee from the restaurant likes Alba's it must be good!
I order take-out and recommend the meatballs, pizza and chicken piccatta. Yum. So good and moderately priced. -

The best pizza in Astoria for me. If you want a well-done crust, they perfect the crust w/o burning the crust. I have also had many pasta dishes and find that their sauce is very tasty,
The friendliness of the owners are also appreciated. You can order online, which is great considering you can request food they way you like it prepared and they have a print out to ensure accuracy. http://www.albapizza.com/
Nice coupons, and some can be used online. -

I miss Alba's pizza. It is actually one of the places that I plan to hit up every time I go back home to NYC. I can only speak for their slices and chicken parm, which have a taste that beats that of Pizza Palace nearby. I love the plain slices! Something about the sauce and cheese gives their pizza a unique taste; one that I could recognize if blinded and given a taste test.
I am salivating now so I shall end my review. -

I thought my memory might have been clouded by sentimentality - Alba's was the pizzeria hangout for us after school as kids. We'd all pack around a table and devour our cheesy slices.
I returned recently - after having not stopped in for a slice in a decade. The interior looks the different, newer, fresher - its more than a pizzeria now, its a respectable eatery. The same family seems to own the place - and a sense of friendliness fills the place like the smell of dough baking in the oven. The pizza? - just as good as I remember.
If you'd like a slice of outer-borough pizza, Alba's is a real Queens gem. I've missed out on these slices for ten years, I need to make up for it now. -

This is my closest Pizza place. It's got slices, it's got calzones, it's got garlic knots. Only problem, it's completely unremarkable.
If it stayed open late maybe that would garnish it another star for convenience, but it doesn't. It closes pretty early (before midnight) .So late night drunk slices when my palette doesn't care for an under seasoned sauce never happen - instead my over attentive sober palette knows full well that it's being let down.
Sorry Alba, you are just okay. -

Astoria, NY
The ambiance is very no frills. Customers are all locals and even a good number of elderly people. Wandered because it was there and was knocked out by the food.
The most tender fried calamari I've had in a long, long time. Stuffed rigatoni delivered the good and chicken piccatta was also very tender in a tangy lemon butter sauce, studded with some fat capers. Service was fine, nothing exceptional or poor about it. Also, it was very cheap, considering the previously mentioned no frills ambiance, it is actually a large restaurant. -

Brooklyn, NY
You gotta be kidding me... I didn't have the pizza, which is supposed to be good, but when we had 10 people, they sat us in the back and gave us a "server". This server and his helper had apparently never waited a table before.
The time difference between the first person "served" and the last; over 30 minutes.
My suggestion would be to listen to the other reviews - grab a slice and get out. -

Brooklyn, NY
Alba's is the worst slice of pizza in Astoria. Anybody who tells you that this place makes good pizza is out of their bird (or just moved here from the midwest where the best pizza comes frozen from the supermarket). I live 1 block away from this place but can not stand the fact that their slices taste terrible and are overpriced. It's sad because the service is good and the place looks pretty nice inside, but the food is crap so whats the point. I'm shocked that they are still in business to be honest.
Go 3 blocks down to 31st street (under the subway) and try a slice from Rosario's. 10 times better. Even Frankie's pizza by the subway is much better than Albas. -

Brooklyn, NY
Alba's is the closest pizza place to my house, so that's the main reason I go there all the time.
The second is probably their awesome service. Mario and Sal are truly nice guys who care about their customers and making them happy. Could I get a better slice in Astoria? Yes. But do those other places have Mario? No.
Their pasta dishes vary between kind of bland to decent. Their grandma/grandpa pizza is good. Their chicken wings are actually really good, if you're craving that sort of thing. I usually just stick to a cheese slice and a beer. Perfect NY comfort food. -

3.5 stars...
I found out about this place from two friends who live in Astoria and eat here regularly. The place is a combination of a regular NYC to-go styled pizza spot but they also have a dining area and offer a full Italian menu. The prices are very reasonable (mostly $10-17) and the portions will almost certainly put you in a food comma (except for the ravioli which was a more reasonable portion size). The service here wasn't that great and the food wasn't astounding but it was still pretty good. The veal in the veal parm was too chewy and the meatballs were uncommonly mushy but overall the food was pretty decent. Definitely a solid 3.5 stars. -

One of the only places in Astoria that has whole wheat pizza, so I cant be mad at it. They also have online ordering, which is cool.
I've never BEEN there, only ordered. -

ASTORIA, NY
The whole wheat pizza is delicious! However, putting broccoli, onions and mushrooms on a SMALL whole wheat pie was $17.00- a bit pricey, but the small was actually quite large. So I guess I'll just have delicious leftovers for a while. Yum.

The pizza here is awesome. I have brought a few people who are self-proclaimed "pizza experts" and they also say the sauce is great and the cheese is a great flavor. They have a whole wheat that is awesome, but it's hard to find that as a slice since usually you can only order it to go. They are a neighborhood pizza place and it's usually not hard to get a table if you want to eat there. This is my go-to for a treat on the week ends. Then cross the street to Martha's Country Bakery and you'll have a heavenly evening!

If Alba's stopped selling everything except for their grandma pie, I would still give it five stars. I'm sure their other stuff is good too, but the grandma pie here is amazingly delicious. It has some sort of special sauce on it and a nice basil leaf. I like getting it with pepperoni for an extra taste sensation.

We've been ordering regularly from Alba's for almost a year now and they have not failed us once. I love that they have individual pizzas and an amazing selection of toppings. I can't remember the last time I was at a pizza place that offered eggplant and artichoke hearts- my favorite!
The prices are reasonable, and the times we've eaten in have been really pleasant. I've had the chicken francais a few times and really enjoyed it as well. The Mediterranean salad is terrific and the chicken Caesar salad is always a good bet.
I've ordered the mussels a few times and I'm pretty sure they use frozen ones which is not great, but not awful. However, I tried the calamari once and they were just flat out gross. I wouldn't recommend getting too adventurous with their shellfish selection (hence 4 stars instead of 5). -

I just ordered a calzone from Alba's. I figured I would give them a try , since the pizza I had from them was pretty good. Well I placed my order online, and after about an hour and 15mins later it arrived. It was cold, had mountians of ricotta, zero mozz, and was basically a pizza dough wadded up, baked and sliced down the middle. Which they over stuffed. It was pretty gross. I also had to pay extra for sauce and they didn't send it. I would not recommed this place. If you do stick to the pizza

Not terrible.. But certainly not great. I ordered from alba's once, it was enough to never return. I apply to the philosophy that pizza is like sex, even when it's bad it's not that bad! If Alba's was a person I would have deleted there number.

Review from Mike D.
I'm a fan. Nothing fancy, but they do everything right. Pizza, pasta, calzones all good in my book. Been visiting on and off for the past few years. Good service and friendly owner who seems passionate about his place. Above average beer selection for a pizza joint.

I live closeby, and come here all the time. You always judge a pizza place by its plain slice, and it's really one of the best I've ever had. I've dined in before too and the service was quick and friendly. They have a number of nice beers on tap too if you're staying in. But overall, one of the best slices I've ever had and I've had others agree when I have visitors coming to Astoria. I can also recommend their meatball parm, although I felt it is a tiny bit on the dry side and would be better if it was doused with more marinara.
