Oakland, CA
This place is awesome. Hands down, the healthiest most beautiful fish I have seen in the East Bay. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly. This is the only place that I purchase fish and plants for my freshwater tanks.
The selection of freshwater fish changes all the time and they may not always have what you are looking for in stock, but they often have varieties that no other aquarium store has. I live in Montclair and it is a bit out of the way, but I learned the hard way to stay away from stores whose fish are not as healthy and might introduce disease into your tank. This is my favorite LFS! -

All I can say is WOW. I just started a saltwater reef system and the selection and knowledge of the staff is great! Purchased my first "LIVE" rock and it is really alive! 3 starfish, 8 baby feather dusters and tons of really cool coral already attached. It is a bit more expensive than other stores but worth the time and money!
Great selection of freshwater and saltwater fish, plants and supplies.
You have to check this place out. After a trip to San Francisco for my saltwater needs we ended up back in the East Bay for better quality and much more friendly staff.
Thanks Albany Aquarium. I shall return for all my aquarium needs! -

In reference to all of these reviews I've read, Albany Aquarium is pricey, but not over priced, but worth it...........totally. The amount of support and education you get you can't buy. In this day and age of "where the heck is the attendant" warehouse shopping, this place is a welcome relief.

I first shopped at Albany Aquarium in the early 70s and the quality of service and fish is as good now as it ever was. It is so refreshing to see clear clean water in the tanks, healthy fish (I didn't see a single floater), a wide selection of plants and a very professional and knowledgeable staff. Albany Aquarium quarantines new arrivals for a period of observation, whereas with some other stores the new arrivals are the only healthy fish in stock. I can't say enough good things about Albany Aquarium and will travel there for all my tropical fish needs.

I vividly remember the first time I set foot inside of the Albany Aquarium. It was Sunday October 20, 1991, the day of the Oakland Hills Fire. The sky was smoky grey and black, and it's as if Judgment Day had arrived.
If you want expert advice and service for lizards, go to Vivarium in Berkeley. If you like pet fish (and the plants to go with them) better, the Albany Aquarium is your place. That is all. -

I went to Albany Aquarium looking for a tank set up. I really didn't like any of their tanks. I was looking for a traditional tank about 70 gallons rectangular prism. Nothing like that there. They had a great selection of plants, and that is what they primarily sell. The idea is that the plants are what you want, and the fish are secondary. I was looking for African Cyclids, but they don't carry them. The girl told me they are too aggressive. Nonsense. Everything was very expensive! I recommend Albany for basic supplies and for plant selections. Buy your tank and fish elsewhere.

Great selection, great service, and great products, very knowledgeable and helpful staff. Only thing is sometimes they can be a bit swamped but what do you expect from a small specialty store with employees who actually care

All my fish I currently own, I've bought here. The staff are some of the coolest people you'll ever meet. They know SO MUCH about fish, its truly mind blowing. I had some problems with the pH of my tank when I first started it, and they really helped me out. (They also weren't annoyed with my repeated, worried calls) The staff also aren't trying to just sell you fish, but they are also concerned with the fishes well-being, which is a nice change from some of the bigger stores.
The fish that I've had from here are all healthy and happy! Its organized and neat with all the fish healthy and the tanks clean. The nice thing about this aquarium is that even though they don't have a huge selection, they have fish that I can't find anywhere else! Also, every time I have gone there, they have completely different kinds of fish than the time before. Its always so exciting to see what they have!
Bottom line: The expert employees and the clean, healthy fish make the slightly high prices well worth it. Best all-around fish store ever. -

The staff here is great, and this is a great store to find some of the rarer plants in the hobby. Hands down they're one of the best stores in the bay area. I'm so glad to live here in the bay, so many people on the fish forums lament the fact that there are no good stores and they resort to ordering online site unseen. Too bad they don't have a place like Albany!
Evan and the rest of the staff are very knowledgeable, and are obviously fish geeks. I like that they hire staff that are fish geeks themselves vs just having people that are looking for a paycheck.
The fish are always healthy because they are quarantined before being put up for sale.
The plants are nice and rare, stuff you won't find everywhere, and the best part is that they're actually submersed growth, having been in the tanks for a while, and you're not getting emmersed plants from florida that'll go through a melting period in your tanks. -

I first went in here a couple of years ago when I first got into the reef aquarium hobby. I was very impressed with their fresh water planted tank inventory and knowledge, but they were lacking in the saltwater department. Recently, however, I started a macro algae marine tank and walked in here to see if they had any saltwater macro algae since I knew they were kind of a plant place, and i was incredibly impressed with how far along their saltwater setup as gone.
While this is not yet a place to get SPS corals, they hade a nice selection of very healthy looking marine fish and anemones as well as the best selection in the bay area (at least as far as I have seen) of macro algae for either variety in a refugium or non-invasive display tank macro algae like Halimeda sp. and Red Gracilaria.
I hope they continue to build out their saltwater and reef setup because they are one of the more knowledge LFSs I have been to and seem to genuinely care about the health of their animals.
I am reserving my 5th star for when they have a broader selection of corals, but this is now one of my favorite LFSs in the East Bay. -

I walked in looking for a replacement to a pump that I was told is now somewhat obsolete....the clerk was very patient helping me understand my aquarium and figure out a way to transport my three precious fish on a three day cross-country trip....turns out there is a lot to know about maintaining aquariums....and my fish are lucky to be alive. And I decided to buy a book on maintaining aquariums.
Five stars for the knowledgable staff and friendly customer service. The selection was a little sparse, but they ordered the portable pump I needed in time for my trip. -

Seemingly the only place in the Bay that carries replacement bulbs for my Eclipse 3 tank... (Why is it that every big box store sells the tanks, but no replacement bulbs??) My fish had been living in permanent darkness for three days and were starting to swim slightly sideways--one trip to Albany Aquarium and their problems were solved.
I can't wait to look around next time I'm there (and not in a hurry to rescue sick fish back at home). Yes, it seemed a bit small-- but the selection seems great, and all of the tanks were clean, and the fish happy and bright. I will definitely be back. -

Albany Aquarium has an unbelievable plant collection. There are so many incredible varieties, if you're into aquascaping you can drop a lot of cash in this place. They also have small numbers of high quality fish. Everything in here is ridiculously expensive. Even their advice and assistance requires payment: example, I needed help on a Sunday(and my usual spot is closed), and I needed a second opinion on my water. I brought water to them for testing (free at every other LFS) and needed to discuss the situation, and they charged me $3, which is some real nickel and diming bs.
TLDR: Every single person in this store is super knowledgeable. Everything in this store is super expensive, much more so than any other fish store in the area.Comment from Guy O. of Albany Aquarium 9/9/2011

Love the staff here. They are really nice and helpful if you have any questions or need recommendations. They also make the greatest little signs for the tanks -- with very helpful descriptions of the fish and a picture so you know which fish is which. Seriously awesome -- having been to a lot of fish stores, this one is my favorite in the East Bay. The fish are fat and happy, especially the puffers.
The staff really care about their fish. They will even educate you that those 3 goldfish you buy now need a large enough tank because in a while, they will be softball-sized goldfish. Imagine that. So go ahead, get that 10 gallon tank to start. It's a great value. -

the people at this place are AWESOME. when our beloved 10-year-old goldfish was tragically alive but floating upside down and were trying to basically hospice him gently to the big fishpond in the sky, they helped us set up a little tank for him and also answered my frequent questions without making me feel like a crazy person. then they got us started with LIVE PLANTS and tropical fish which has been so rewarding. when black algae was taking over I brought in a sample and they told me exactly how to fix it -- and here's the important part -- without filling my tank with pesticides. they help you build a natural cycle and (as much as possible) treat problems with science, not chemicals. hopefully i will never need to buy fish or plants from anywhere else.

Fairfield, CA
Very decent selection of plants which look very healthy, but there were a lot of snails in most of the tanks with plants. Also, they didn't have too many options for fish, although some of the fish they have you can't really find in most average pet/aquarium stores. They also had pretty shrimp, which are also pretty hard to find. All the fish looked healthy, not a dead or sick fish in sight. Staff were nice and helpful when we asked about some ground cover for our low-light tank.
Two main things that I didn't like was that the store was uncomfortably humid and hot, and that everything was WAY overpriced. I'd probably go back, but only if I had a bunch of money and couldn't find it elsewhere for a better price. -
Review from Avi W.
I'm a big fan of the Albany Aquarium. I live in Oakland, and I certainly have closer aquariums nearbye for my fishy needs.
The key that seperates Albany Aquarium from others is tipified in this very generic and common aquarium conversation.
Most fish stores:
'Hi I have X fish, will Y fish get along?'
'Oh yeah yeah, no problem.'
Albany Aquarium:
'Hi I have X fish and a tank Y gallons, will Y fish work for it?'
'Hmm, well X are pretty aggressive, they like to nip. Have you thought about Z fish? They would be great in that tank.'
Its a big difference, and its why I drive the extra 20 minutes. -

-----Long Story Short
Albany Aquarium is a true gem when it comes to fish store retail. With great service, expert staff passionate about the hobby, and a commitment to healthy fish, they should be anybody's go-to for fish needs. We're moving to Mountain View but we're STILL going to commute to Albany just so we can continue shopping here.
-----Service
They are staffed with expert people passionate about aquariums and their inhabitants. The entire staff is kind, patient, and will offer you thorough wisdom and advice whether you're a beginner or fellow fish expert. They truly want you to enjoy the hobby and your fish to be healthy and well.
They're also happy to diagnose any fish if you bring them in and help figure out solutions. Make sure to bring in a separate water sample for them to test (single tests range from $1-3) so they can get a better picture of what's going on.
They know me now because I go there for every fish/plant purchase and whenever I have a slight problem (I tend to be a Mother Hen with my fish) and answer all my questions without complaints.
-----Pricing
The prices here are slightly higher than what you'll find at large chains like Petco but that's because Albany Aquarium is an independent local business committed to quality. They are also much more discerning when it comes to what products they carry, because they do not want to sell you anything they themselves would not use. If you want cheap fish equipment that will break or poison your fish or fish that will die in a week, go to Petco and pay $5 less.
-----Products
The folks at Albany Aquarium are unique in that they actually are devoted to providing healthy, quality fish. They have a special quarantining process that every fish goes through before it is sold, so you know that the fish you buy are the healthiest fish available. All sick and questionable organisms do not escape their discerning eye!
Decent selection of freshwater/saltwater fish that is constantly changing due to whatever fish they get imported in. You can also find fun organisms here like shrimp and sometimes African frogs. A really nice selection of live plants as well as detailed little blurbs on each plant and their light needs.
-----Atmosphere
The store is small but beautiful. Their various carefully aquascaped tanks in front let you know that they actually enjoy the hobby and know what they're doing. They fit quite a lot of tanks into that small space and all of them are in great shape --- clean and presentable! You'll find no sick fish hanging out in corners or poky plastic plants or neon gravel here. -

Adorable fish store! Located off San Pablo (a pretty busy street), it is sometimes missed. Look out for the small store built out of brick with beautiful fish murals on the outside! Park on the street if you can find some. Every time that I've gone, I've been lucky to grab a spot right in front of the store.
Don't expect huge selections of fish and products inside. It very much has the local store atmosphere to it. What you can expect is exceptionally knowledgeable staff and high quality fish. They take an outstanding care of their fish and even hold a good return policy on their animals. The items they offer here are top quality as well. For the quality you receive from here, will be the price you pay for. So yes, it may be a bit pricier than your normal Pet Store; but you will not be disappointed.
I bought a Cambodian Betta Fish from here. The fish is beautiful, healthy and hearty. They've trained their betta fish to all eat pellets, so my little guy is not shy to eat!
They offer fresh water and salt water here. For a small store like this, they carry a wide variety of items. -

We've been going to AA for about 8 years. These people deserve high marks for their fish and plants. Ask them a question, and you're likely to get good advice. As other reviewers have discussed, the personnel could use a brush-up session at customer service school. I sometimes have seen ads there for part-time work in the store: "Applicants must love fish and people." I infer that it's hard to find employees who pass muster on both counts and that the first criterion is the one that's really essential. The worst offender in the attitude department has gone to the promised land (Berkeley's Fourth Street); on the other hand, I've visited her in her new place of employment and have finally developed a grudging respect for her. So go figure.
I was in today to buy fish food. A customer was holding forth at the front desk, and it seemed to me that I'd never be able to get my purchase rung up. Finally the man behind the counter acknowledged me and we were able to complete the transaction. As I was about to leave, the other customer had this to say: "I used to be messed up on drugs, but now I'm messed up on fish"! As other reviewers have commented, this is really a store for fish enthusiasts. Dealing with these guys is sometimes trying, but I really think that it's worth the effort. -

I found Albany Aquarium to be a very helpful little shop. Even though I am only a beginner cherry shrimp enthusiast there was no snobby attitude about not being a hard-core hobbyist.
Even though I live in the North Bay I will definitely be trekking back to the East Bay to further maintain the little one gallon micro tank I'm establishing. AA is a bit expensive, but no more so than any reputable aquarium that is independently owned. I would rather pay a few extra pennies to know I'm not promoting the mistreatment and exploitation of aquatic life. They seem to really know what they are doing here and actually like fish.
4 stars because they could be a bit less cramped, carry some more decor and have better flooring around their tanks. Otherwise a good bet. -

Albany Aquarium is the real deal. Once you get over how small the place is, you start to notice:
-the fish are all very healthy and bright
-the plant selection is incredible and well marked
-the staff are very helpful WITHOUT the "self-righteous expert" attitude, not to mention very friendly and like to know your name
It is worth the drive to come here because of the above qualities and the fact that in the two years I've been going and buying fish, only one has died (he got caught in the filter, not AA's fault). I can honestly tell the difference with their fish, since they quarantine every single fish that comes into the store. You can get cheaper fish elsewhere, but they won't be as colorful and hardy as those from AA. In the long run, going to Albany Aquarium is way more cost effective.
One last thing: if you friend them on facebook, they always post updates of which fish are in stock and which ones are coming soon. -

This is a very reliable store and I highly recommend it.
The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. ALL of the fish are quarantined before being put on display and sold to the public ***a HUGE plus! They have a wonderful selection and can occasionally order hard to find items/fish.
The prices are slightly high but you really do get what you pay for. It is worth it at this location. -

Good for plants, good for small tiny freshwater fish. Not much medium to large sized Freshwater fish. No Oddballs, hard to find stuff. Basic bread and butter FW fish.
They have saltwater, but I would not buy from them, the coral looks shabby, the live rock is full of aptasia and the fish are just so so with expensive prices. Not worth going to if your a Salt guy or of you like high end freshwater fish.
Good for fish food, and plants basically. -

But they need to have more saltwater/reef section.

Review from John L.
Emeryville, CA
As so many others have said, their plant selection is second to none. Their fish selection, which varies by availability, is still exceptional. Don't come here on a whim-- come here when you're ready to commit to a serious tank. This place has high end equipment and supplies (and fish!). This place carries some rare rare stuff that I've never seen elsewhere.
The one thing I can't comment on is their saltwater selection. I know nothing about saltwater, and quite frankly, I rarely pay attention to the saltwater section, since it doesn't really appeal to me. People here know their stuff, without being condescending.
Come here expecting quality, not low prices. It's true, prices are higher, but that's part of what I consider a 'competence fee' that's almost always worth the cost. Even their regular fancy guppies outshine other fish stores'.
Confession time-- you can indeed find some things cheaper elsewhere. But that said, I still come here to buy the things I can't get anywhere else. And for some strange reason, Panda Corys are cheaper here than anywhere else! -

I bought a Beta from PetCo a couple days ago, and found that he wasn't eating and his color was slowly fading. I stopped into Albany Aquarium to get some advice and they were amazing. They were able to tell me what was probably wrong, give me advice, and had everything right there. Sure enough, 10 minutes after I got home my fish was taken care of and eating .
I love going someplace where they know what they are talking about. -

San Francisco, CA
A great place for aquarium plants. A great place for healthy fish. A great place for planted tank supplies at reasonable prices. If you want to get into planted aquariums, they can provide the expertise and the plants to start you off.
This used to be my favorite planted tank store in the Bay Area (until AquaForest opened in the city) and I still frequent it. They have a large selection of aquarium plants with occasional rarities. Another reviewer complained that their selection was too small, but I think it's quite good--it just rotates so you have to check back often. Certainly not as big as you can get online, but this is a local store. And they quarantine all their fish before sale so they're all healthy. The store is also one of the few local stores that carry vampire shrimp (surprisingly, the PetCo in El Cerrito Plaza did too?!).
The help is friendly and knowledgeable. Many of their workers are high-school or college age so they have quite a lot of turnover. It's a shame that Patrick left, he was one of my favorite workers. The owner, Guy (pronounced Ghee), is super-knowledgeable and helpful. Try to chat with him for a while he can tell some pretty interesting stories. -

**Disclaimer: My husband used to work for Guy Oei, the owner of Albany Aquarium.**
There's a reason people drive in from Antioch and San Jose to shop at Albany Aquarium, and it's the plants. If you have never seen, or do not know what a Dutch aquarium is, prepare to have your aquarist mind blown.
Excellent if inconsistent selection of fishes. But the best thing about buying fish at Albany Aquarium is, Guy has a quarantine room in the back, and every fish he buys from dealers sits in the q-room until they are ascertained healthy and disease-free, THEN they're put out for sale. I think he's the only aquarium in the Bay Area that does that.
I've also seen Guy operate on customer's sick fish in the store! The dude loves fish, loves the hobby. Yes, his prices are higher, but not only does he sell stuff that you cannot buy anywhere else in the Bay Area, he's a local businessman with ONE store who loves fish. So if you want cheaper, you can go to Petco, where pets go to die--or you can support your local business and shop at Albany Aquarium.

This is a great place --- A good fish place, especially when your looking for that fish that cannot be found anywhere else "OCTO's" "Amano Shrimp" --- Yes, the are a little more pricier than your normal fish place, but there fish live and have no ill affects when you get them home. I honestly say, every fish I purchased from them lived. Every fish I purchased from those so called pet stores died or had some major problems with them "sixth street".. EXAMPLE: ick, fungus --- tail rot. By the time they were cured "if they lived" with all the money spent on medicine, I could have purchased from them cheaper. The time they put the fish in quarantine "Q-room" --- is well worth the price you pay for the fish.
If you want fish that go from the shipping box, to the tank, then to the bag you take home --- there is a petco, down the street
OK, let's forget the fish.... They have aquarium plants!! There knowledge and selection is awesome. Price is right on the money --- it might seem a little expensive to the novice that pays 4.99 for the selection of three or four plants at the local pet store "by the way, some are not true aquatic plants". But, compared to ADA, in the city "SF" there prices are more than reasonable. They know "PLANTS" and exactly what you need to make them stay great looking.
Not sure what exactly what the "other" person is talking about when they mean that the staff was not helpful, they are very helpful. Very knowledgeable, the only time there is a lack of help is when they are packed with customers. Which is a good sign of a good aquarium shop, they don't try to rush you through the door and make sure that you have full knowledge of the fish and plants you buy from them.
The only complaint --- I wish Yelp would give me more stars to give them a higher rating. And I wish they were open 7 days a week. But, I guess the fish need to rest too! -

albany aquarium is still my go to place for anything i need for an aquarium because it is the closest lfs that i know of that carries fish that wont die on me the next week.
the deal is on the live fish because the more you buy, the better your discount.
they have a variety of plants and fish to choose from as well as fish food and tanks, and whatever else aquarium.
they're also very informative of the things they sell here because they have a description of each of the plants and fish offered.
the service i think now is hit or miss. sometimes i do not get anyone acknowledging me. still when i do have a question, i can get someone to answer them and make recommendations. -

Small place, decent selection, but when I wanted to engage an employee in conversation about my fish he just couldn't be bothered to spend any time answering my questions. I live in Vallejo and I can tell you its worth the drive to this place. They mainly specialize in fresh water planted tanks. i was blown away with what they had. their workers are very knowledgeable. I never did a planted tank and they walked me through everything. Their prices on fish aren't bad. they actually quarantine their fishes for two weeks before they even sell them. I love my new setup. I also have a reef and honestly they are starting to build up their salt water setup. they have some corals and fishes and inverts, but i haven't got anything in that area from there. they do sell the equipment for saltwater so if your looking for that. this place is awesome for fresh water.

At first I thought place wonderful but lately the employees have created an unpleasant, stressful atmosphere. They seem to not have enough employees and some are not knowledgeable or experienced.
Story time: I waited about 20 minutes for help listening to an employee lecturing a customer, he says, "these fish are going to die in your tank, if they do, I told you they were going to DIE." Then the guy who finally assisted me dropped a frog on the floor while getting it out and then proceeded to sell it to me (thankfully she's fine). Meanwhile the guy cleaning the tanks is running around the store sweating - clearly stressed out and exhausted. Unnecesarily unpleasant atmosphere for a fish store in my opinion.
