I somehow managed to research this one, single historic spot before embarking on a cruise through the inside passage.  Luckily, my instincts were spot-on in making a beeline for this spot the minute I left the giant barge-o-people for the pretty town of Juneau.

At first I walked into the Alaskan Hotel, thinking that the entrance would be shared (like the name of the place).  Nope - the bar entrance is next door.  Dark...red flocked wallpaper...tiffany lamps...vintage nudie photographs framed on the walls...and ice cold beers on tap.  Hello, Alaska!

The bartender was friendly and affable and even though the bar itself smelled kind of funny inside, I sat for a long time and watched the people walk by.  I would highly recommend this bar over the other larger, shinier, more tourist-oriented establishments near the port.

We stayed at the hotel three nights during our camping/hiking trip to Juneau, and spent a hell of a lot of time in the bar. They had great music playing at all times: just as good at 11 am, 5 pm, and 2 am. We missed the live weekend shows, sadly, but I'm sure they're great. The beer selection is the best I saw in town, and this is the only place still bumping mid-week after the tourists all get back on their cruise ships and sail away. You may find it impossible to move. If you're lucky, your second cocktail might be twice as big as the first. If you're luckier, the bartender might take a smoke break and put a friend in charge who likes to pour free shots of Jameson.

Seemed to be one of the busiest spots in the Juneau nightlife scene. Live cajun/country music on the night I was there, and free pool upstairs. It was crowded but there were still a few souls dancing. Good drinks and good times.

GREAT selection of on-tap beers for an Alaskan town!  They had all of the standard prerequisites plus quite a few selections from Pacific Northwest micro-brews, like Deschutes Brewery.  The bar room is dark and historic, with many posters on the wall and a general feeling that if you came in there for the right show, you wouldn't forget it.
