I ate here five years ago when I was visiting family in Alaska. I decided I should probably come on here and rate them because we still talk about how great the salmon sandwich was that we had here. We even talk about making a trip to AK just to have this sandwich! It was so good!!!

Jeezus. This place offers the best chowder I've ever eaten. A cup full of steaming smoked salmon chowder goodness. There were big chunks of salmon and potato in this soup and my mouth waters every time I think back to that fateful day in Ketchikan. Our chowder came with a nice piece of salmon corn bread as well. I've had better tasting corn bread but this was the first time that I've eaten corn bread with salmon baked into it. It was interesting to say the least.

Unfortunately, we couldn't try any of the other food. We came in at about 9am and they didn't start serving anything else until 10am. I was sad because they had some great sounding seafood on the menu including fish and chips and king crab.

They have a small eating area in the back of the Fish House that overlooks the dock area. It's a nice place to relax at while eating your food. It's too bad they don't have a chowder place like this in Hawaii.

I had limited time so I ordered one of the easiest things on the menu - fish and chips.  They offer two kinds - cod and halibut.  The dish was fresh - it was hot out of the deep fryer and the fish was flaky-yet-juicy.  The fries had the right amount of crunch to it.  This dish was pretty good but, it tasted like regular fish and chips.

-1 star for being staffed by snarky hipsters.  In between their social hour, these kids managed to complete one ticket and serve an order.  Their attempts at witty responses to customers' asking for extra time to review the menu did not go over well.  I can't believe these kids made me wait 15 minutes for a simple fish and chips order while they wallowed in their hipster-ness.

I lost track of time wandering around the waterfront on a photo-safari. But I was hungry and with only 30 minutes to chow down something local before having to head back to the ship.
The waterfront is a "tourist trap" but a nice one at that, and unlike the other reviews here, my eat-and-run experience wasn't all that bad... pretty good in fact.
I can recommend the halibut soft tacos. Tasty. Crunchy. Flaky. Tasty to the eyes. Easy to wolf down and hoof it back to the ship.

I was only in Ketchikan for a couple of hours, so I was on a mission to find some good salmon.  I saw that Alaska Fish House was a good prospect, so I headed straight there.  I was kind of surprised that it was an "order at the counter" type of place after reading the reviews, but the guy behind the counter was super friendly and helped me pick the best lunch for me.

I ended up going with the smoked salmon fillet.  It was a fillet of salmon from the wood fired grill with diced tomatoes, onions and capers.  It also came with crackers and a creamy salmon spread.  It was delicious.

We really wanted a beer with lunch, but they don't serve beer.  The best part about this place, though, is that they directed us to the bar across the way and offered to deliver our food over there when it was ready.  Awesome!

So an all around great experience, delicious fish served to us in the bar with the delicious beer.  Yum!

Just want to include this warning. Don't expect to eat here unless you are coming off a cruise or are traveling here during cruise season. It is closed the rest of the time.
The map location here is also wrong. It butts up against the marina by the ports. Which is tourist trap down town. Visited after the last cruise ship of the year had left and most of everything was boarded up for the winter. Only true local businesses were open which weren't many unless you went downtown towards the mall.

Great fish at a reasonable price.   Nothing fancy but very clean.   You order from a limited menu at the counter and there is seating in the back with a harbor view.   Best fish and chips in town!

Two stars for okay food and the view of the harbor was nice. Perhaps because many of these businesses are only open during cruise season, there seems to be a tendency to be overpriced with not so great food or service. I think the term "tourist trap" comes to mind. This place wasn't that bad...

So in all fairness, keeping that in mind, I can't add much that hasn't been well said before (thanks Elizabeth S. I wish I had seen your review prior). This place was actually recommended to us by a local we had met in church that morning.

I love fish and chips. I don't think there's still Arthur Treacher's but H. Salt was good and I've had the best in Glasgow, Scotland. This didn't really compare to any - food was okay, served too hot, and at a tourist-y price, with pretty small portions even though we "upgraded" to a higher quality of fish. We had just fish & chips and there as no alcohol available unless we went next door; nothing was worth recommending. After ordering at the counter, we sat by the window with an unremarkable view of the waterfront, marina and the harbor with the boats.
The service was okay but kind of slow - perhaps they were busy catching the fish which was tasty and fresh! Not all that bad but could be much, much better.

So-so food, at a tourist trap price, with a long wait to get the food, when they were not even busy.  We had the fish & chips and the crab legs; both were minamally serviceable but nothing special to write home about.  You order at the counter from "kids" who only seem minamally interested in their jobs, (think fast food place in LA).  They took a long time to bring out our food and then gave it to someone else.  This was followed by a mild "tude" for pointing out their error which was followed by another long wait and finally someone else searching the not so large establishment for us.  It wasn't worth the wait.

It is in a nice setting on the waterfront/Marina with a view of the harbor and the boats but I think you could be a blind rodent and find "something" better.  It still gets two stars because the food was "ok" when it did show up and the view of the harbor was nice.

Oh' and they have that open seating/compete for a seat arrangement which was not an issue on the not so busy day/time I was there.

I was only in Ketchikan for a few hours off a cruise ship but being a foody I knew this was hopefully a good place to find some great seafood. With only four hours it was the only non "touristy" thing to do. I have to say, the only thing I had was the fish/chips, which was good, then I went back for shrimp/chips and it was awesome!! (see my profile photo) Service is sketchy, I think I did have to remind them about a drink or something, but it was a bunch of young kids, obviously working the summer (tourist) season in Alaska, I wouldn't let it prevent me from going back (and I plan to) as long as they don't burn my shrimp and chips!!
It's located right on the harbor, which was very cool, if I remember right, only a few inside tables, a couple benches outside and it is an "order here" pick up here" kind of place but thats ok, they give you a sturdy box that allows you to walk and eat while enjoying Ketchikan and the harbor!

    Horrible service!!! Horrible!!

And the seafood chowder was not good, it was bland ! I wish my yelp had worked so I wouldn't have tried this place--The place wasn't busy and it took awhile for our orders to be taken.. You take your order first, then you have a seat and they bring your food out to you.. My friend and I both order at the same time.. I got my soup 15 min before she started getting her order and she got her fish n chips first before the soup..we asked about the soup and they responded "oh, ok"...  another 10 minutes flew and we hunted someone down and again asked for the soup..and they said they will check.. what is there to check up on?? All you have to do is scoop the soup in a cup??? 5 minutes later... Out comes the soup.. "ok, now where is my cornbread?"  He  replies, "oh Ill go get it"... Another 5 minutes pass and we ask again and he says "oh ok".... Horrible experience... You are better off ordering your meal at the stands outside... You'd better better service than this place.. Shortly after they delivered my friends soup, I heard them say we are out of chowder...and it was only 1pm... This is a pretty small town, they should check the schedules to see when the cruise ships are coming in so they can better prepare...

I looked up places to eat in Alaska before heading out on my Alaska cruise.  This place got pretty good reviews, so I thought I'd give it a try.

We ordered the halibut fish & chips and the salmon chowder.  They were both just okay.  The halibut was breaded (not battered like I usually see it), so you couldn't really taste the fish. The breading overtook the whole thing. The salmon chowder was just ok too. Nothing too fancy.

And the wait was REALLY LONG.  I guess they had a lot of customers that day, as there were 3 cruise ships in port.  But seeing as we only had a few hours to check out Ketchikan, waiting ~30 mins to get my fish & chips was not too cool.  The people are nice though.

We had a few hours in tacky Ketchikan and the reviews led us here. Boy, were we ever happy!!  They have the best fried halibut and chips I have ever tasted anywhere (including the UK)! I can't say enough good things....the fish was fresh and meaty, even the fries were wonderful- with paprika - and it was all grease free - a miracle! The salmon chowder would have been  better if the potatos were cooked instead of rock hard.  The bread pudding with berries was yummy.
I will remember the fish and chips for the rest of my life! GO!!!!!

We went here during peak tourist season in July so it was fairly crowded. Our first choice was the fish tacos....which happened to be unavailable due to lack of tortillas...so we ordered the 3pcs fish and chips. Super overpriced for the small quantity. Cute harbor decor interior overlooking the water. Overall the food is not worth the wait or the premium price. I recommend going to any of the other numerous fish and chips restaurants on the harbor...you're likely to find a better deal.

Came here as part of a boat cruise excursion called the "Alaskan Chef's Table." Chuck and Deby Slagle, the owners, hosted a group of 17 of us to a fixed menu of local dishes with Deby's personal touches. Chuck joined our group and talked about the dishes and the ingredients that went into them. His stories and history were a great addition to the experience. He told us about the salmon fisheries and the best way to catch the best salmon. I'll never do it, but it was great to know how it's done.
The menu included gravlax salmon, prawns, alaska bouillabaise, troll caught king salmon and wild bread pudding. All of it was good but the bouillabaise in particular was amazing. The broth was not too salty and not fishy at all. The yukon gold potatoes were soft and savory but not mushy. The bread pudding with blueberries and rhubarb was a nice finish.
The service was efficient and friendly. Chuck and Deby even gave us a parting gift, book with the recipes of all the dishes we had!

I HAD to have fish and chips and we stopped at the Fish House in Ketchikan, while cruising the Inside Passage.  It was the absolute BEST!  Here is why:

    1. The halibut was FRESH, hot,  and sweet.  It had a mild flavor that was so delicious.   It was fried to perfection in a crunchy Panko breading that was flavorful and crispy.  The fish was moist, mild and the best tasting!  I have eaten a lot of fish and chips, but this was the absolute BEST!

    2. The "tartar" sauce usually served with fish and chips is mayonnaise based with a bunch of pickles....NOT Debbie's!  It is creamy with some tangy and tantilizing flabors that highlights the fish without overpowering any of the halibut flavor.  This is a great sauce!

    3. Okay, coleslaw is my least favorite salad, but Debbie's was UNBELIEVABLE!  The cabbage was still crunchy, as was the other veggies in the salad.  The dressing was a vinegar based delight...it was a bit tangy, and had a mild flavor that added depth to the coleslaw.  I am one to throw coleslaw away, but instead I ate every bite because it was just plain delicious!

    4. I checked out produce prices at the stores in Alaska and thank God I do not have to pay $1.39 for a single ear of corn!  Given that I can totally appreciate why the chips are not fresh cut and fried.  Hey, it is Alaska and these people have to make a living.  Debbie's fries are hot and yummy!  They could stand up to any fries from the lower 48, and they are the perfect chips for her fish and chips!

That was my perfect order of fish and chips...my husband ordered salmon chowder.  It came with a generous chunk of cornbread that was loaded with hunks of salmon and chunks of corn and peppers.  It was mouthwateringly good!  But the salmon chowder....oh my God!  The chowder was thick and delicous.  There was so much salmon in there you could hardly believe it!  Plenty of potatoes and veggies (onion, and the like) were company to the salmon, and it was absolute perfection.  The flavor was clean and fresh, and creamy and strong....not overpowering, just good fresh salmon!  I got a little taste, as it was the perfect chowder and my husband was a bit stingy.  (I do not blame him though!)

That was the food....we ordered and found a table inside a sideroom that allows others to come and join you for lunch.  ( I have NO idea why anyone would eat anything but that fish and chips or salmon!)  The view of the harbor is breathtaking, and you are located close to the shopping, cruise dock, and downtown Ketchikan.  Soon your order is brought to your table by really nice people!  It is steaming hot, absolutely delicious, and you get to watch all the excitement of the docks.  Believe me, The Alaska Fish House is THE place to eat in Ketchikan!!!

We picked up a menu, because I will NOT forget this place, and they have sandwiches, salads, tacos and small plate menus of salmon and fish, along with king crab legs.  They have desserts and beverages as well.  Debbie says they also do take out dining and ship fish home.  So, check out their website too!  This is a place you DO NOT WANT TO MISS!

We only had a couple hours to tour downtown Ketchikan, but I wanted some fresh salmon.  We walked over to the Fish House and I ordered their salmon sandwich and my husband ordered their cod fish & chips.  My salmon was good, but I took a couple bites of my husband's cod fish & chips and could not believe how fresh, moist and lite they were!  Had to take another bite and wish I would have ordered the cod fish & chips.  Service was ok, but again mostly young kids working the season.  My husband agreed they were the best fish and chips he has ever eaten!

We paid for outside food while on the cruise.  The food on the cruise wasn't that good.  Sucks I still gained 50 pounds just on my chin.  It was a nice change of pace to eat non boat food.  I don't remember what I ate but I am pretty sure they were fish tacos.  The fish and chips were awesome here.  The seafood overall is obviously very fresh.  I would go back.

I had this place deliver a fried halibut and king crab combo to Fat Stan's so I could enjoy a delicious brew with my seafood. The food was good, very fresh, and about as good a price as you will find near the cruise ports. If your in on a cruise, give it a try.

The word "salmon" should have been eliminated from the salmon chowder on the menu.  If I were blindfolded, all I could taste were potatoes and corn in between the tough, and stringy parts of leek.  I complained to the cook that there was no salmon in the chowder.  He went to the pot and kept dipping the laddle until he came up with a piece.  His reply was "it's there, it's small and you just have to look for it".  I wouldn't use the word small; minute would be a better description.  Another nearby patron bought the big container of chowder and threw the whole thing away.  I asked how she liked it, and she replied it was terrible.  My sentiments exactly.  The funny thing is....this is where salmon comes from!  It's a shame an establishment can serve such terrible food.  I was on a cruise ship (as probably most customers were that day).  They must have the attitude that they can serve terrible food, charge what they want, because that person will never be back and the next cruise ship passenger will be totally unsuspecting.
