ONE thing to eat here in my opinion and the only thing I get when I do come here: Chile. Relleno. Burrito. DEEEAAAAAM! What's a female dog, is every time I want one of these, it is Sunday, and they are closed Sundays. Geez.
Wrapped in thin, hot flour tortilla, this burrito has me coming off withdrawals after several months of not having it. Writing this review is making me want it right now and I live in Dublin and if my lazy arse wasn't so far away, I'd be going down right now to get one. Wheew. This is hard, but let me describe to you what I in a tizzy about when it comes to this burrito.
Unlike most chile relleno burritos, this one is unique as I've said earlier, coming wrapped in a thin flour tortilla, with rice, beans, salsa, oh forsaken CHEESE, and bits of tenderly cared for fried chile relleno nestled so together as one. Now I could say the chile relleno is baked, but fried sounds so much better and just seems right, being that my first whiff of this burrito is always buttery goodness-like.
Oh chile relleno...let me count the ways...Listed in: Favorites

Walked in today to find many dudes grubbing on the infamous -Burrito Mojado- , which in 2008 won some " Best Of" award..not East Bay Express, something smaller. My eyes got big off the sight of these bad boys.
Knowing an unproductive afternoon is inevitable after inhaling a gargantuan amount of Mexican food,
" food coma, mang"
I opted for the super Pollo Asado Burrito. Saw dudes getting their burritos brought to them and was still " whoa" off the size.
5 minutes later, it showed up. I will be the first to tell you that I am a die hard La Pinata fan, but Alameda Taqueria holds it's own.About 2/3 the size of " El Famoso", but here you're not dealing with a pound of excess rice , which I dig. The pollo asado almost has an al pastor quality. Such Zest. Crazy deliciousness.
$6.65 gets you this bad boy and even for a glutton like myself, I only ate half, it was that filling.
Maybe the best burrito on the island...
Do it. -

No Tabasco? No Tapatio? Wait.. this is a Mexican restaurant right?
I kinda agree with Mandy S's review... this place isn't bad-- but it isn't good. It's just kinda whatever. I have no emotion to express about the burrito i ate here.
It was just a burrito which i could eat again, but don't plan to. Not in a "I don't plan to eat here because it was bad" way, but more of a "There was just nothing special about it" way.
If you plan to dine in, the restaurant itself is kinda small... you get free chips and salsa(but i think you only get one serving, you can't go back for more) Also don't sit by the left window, it smells weird.
And oh yeah, no hot sauce. What's up with that?Listed in: The Ultimate Alameda List

There is no better CARNE ASADA anywhere else! Period. End of story.
Last time I had eaten here was probably back in 2006. So the remodel was all new to me. I ordered the usual "Carne Asada Super Burrito" and held the frijoles. Saw the Pineapple aqua del dia, and had to try that as well. I paid under $9 for my entire meal!
If you refer to the first sentence of this review, that was my initial thought as I swallowed my first bite. Pause. The carne asada was cooked to perfection. Not dry, and flavorful! Plus, the fact that they melt the cheese in the tortilla (when they steam it), definitely goes a long way. Lots of other taquerias fail to do this, and I swear it makes the burrito so much better.
Plus the guy at the counter taking my order, and accepting my payment was super friendly! He explained to me they sometimes have Kiwi aqua del dia - whatever they have available, they will make it the "water of the day"!
I've been eating here for almost 9 yrs, and every time it's never been disappointing. So do yourself a favor, and check Alameda Taqueria out! Really, this place deserves more than 5 stars! -

Oh Alameda Taqueria.
This place served as many a bonding moments for my roommates and I. I confess, I wasn't exactly enthralled with my first burrito from this place but then I learned to love it and then it just turned into an addiction. It is so difficult for me to restrain from eating a whole burrito. I know if I cut it in half and save the rest for later it will taste so much better (the flavors will meld together) for breakfast or lunch but I can't help it. I will eat the whole burrito then and there if no one stops me. Grilled chicken, grilled steak, no beans, extra guac, no sour cream, this way that way, any way you like it. The taqueria is there to please.
The guacamole is outstanding. Fresh and packed to the brim. It's worth every penny. The only other non burrito order I have ventured out to was a quesadilla. It wasn't your ordinary quesadilla. It was a meal. Oh lord. But it was good and it came with salsa and lettuce. Yum. But I will stick with my burrito. Super. Plus I love the red and green sauces they give. Love a little spice in my life.
It's funny ordering from here. They have their own process in how you order a burrito. You have to structure your sentence in a specific way. Call in an order enough times and you will figure it out. Its like a secret society.
Someone please call me when the renovations are complete. Its been too long of a dry spell. -

If you are on a diet or just trying to maintain your weight, run as fast as you can from Alameda Taqueria.
Aside from the monstrous size, the quality and price point is decent. Will I be coming back? Hell no. You think I lost ten pounds by eating *this* all day? -

$3.05 for an ENORMOUS carnitas taco that is as big as my head?
We were frantically looking for something that was not a Taco Smell on our way to catch a flight and this taqueria hit the spot. We were in and out in less than 20 minutes and the cashier and cooks were all friendly, wishing us a Happy New Year (and one was in such a jolly mood he sang while cooking.)
If I lived in Alameda I would be a regular. (On a side note, there are dozens of cute and attractive restaurants and cafes in this area. What a quaint part of town - totally charming and unpretentious!) -

Wow - this place was incredibly remarkable for its ability to be completely mediocre.
Yes, the food the edible - but no, it did not have taste. Yes, there were calories in my burrito - but no, they had no flavor. Yes, there was no line at the counter - but no, my food still took 25 minutes to get to me.
I think it's impressive that an eatery can be 100% completely okay. Not good, not bad, just okay. It's as though it is a benchmark for all other experiences in the universe. I now consider Alameda Taqueria to be the most neutral eating experience I've ever had, and will review all other establishments based on that as my criteria. -

I'm with Mandy on this one - the burritos are pretty big, sure, but super bland. Like a large stack of pancakes, they start out real exciting, but once you're halfway through you're sick of them. I figured out why I disagreed so much with my vegetarian friends about this place - the problem with these burritos is that they are full of beans and rice - to them, that's not a problem. The carnitas is tasty, but scarce. Guacamole is pretty good and comes standard on super burritos. For burritos, this place is good for a vegetarian one, but not much else.
For what it's worth, 4 Caminos across the bridge has way bigger burritos with way more meat. I imagine it's still something of a hidden gem, though. -

Holy cow do they make a massive burrito here! The chips are really nice and crispy too and the staff are really polite. Nice quiet spot (or maybe that's how all of Alameda is?)
Anyhow I got the carne asada super burrito and it was like a foot long and four inches in diameter (actually i wanted to say it had a 2-inch radius, but 4 beats two any day). Meat was pretty good and the burrito was good and filling - i couldn't eat it all the way.
If you are poor and starving, just eat here once a day! -

I'm happy to find out the best Taqueria in Alameda is OPEN again. I love their food more than the famous La Pinata because you wont find as much fatty fat in the meat. Not only do they give you meat with less of the fatty crap, but the meat is tasty and tender. They aren't stingy with the servings of guacamole, sour cream, and cheese. Most taqueria's put alot of milk in the sour cream to make it last longer, but that isn't the case over here. It's all about Quality and a great amount of Quantity. However, they do have a down side........ they don't serve
Horchata. Other than that, the menu, cost, & service is great!!! -

So here's the deal. The lady who owns this place is Mimi, who's feisty and great, and her brother is the Facilities Manager at my work. She gives me free sodas when I go, and they have RC Cola in the soda machine!!!
Their food is satisfying and cheap, and it's just a comfortable spot to enjoy some flautas or whatever gets your rocks off.
An odd sidenote: the only reason I started coming here was due to local drama. See, the owner's brother that I mentioned I work with hired this dude Mario to work in our company's cafeteria. Mario worked at Alameda Taqueria. He was real earthy; like he would do yoga and listen to Mexican rock music and wear hemp jewelry. Anyway, at Christmas time he went to Mexico for surgery and has never returned. He said he'd be home in a month. And he never came back. So periodically workers at the cafeteria ask me to go to Taqueria to ask Mimi if she's heard from Mario. And she never has heard from him.
If by a slim chance anyone reading this knows Mario from Alameda Taqueria and knows anything about his whereabouts, let me know so I can spread the word! Mario, if you're reading this let someone know where you are!
P.S. - Last week I went asking Mimi about Mario again, and she let me know she's having to sell the place. Hopefully it all stays the same; I'm not sure if she knows what's going to happen to the place. -

So tried this joint today.
A few things-
1.) Way dirty. Crumbs everywhere. Unclean tables, trays, floor, etc. Super busy late night taquerias can be this way & it kinda slides but this place should be way cleaner for what it is.
2.) SOME of the prices are great (a HUGE plate of two chile rellenos w/ rice & beans for $8 is pretty good, but the burritos for example are a lot more than other taquerias).
3.) Food just isn't so great. Very Americanized & bland. Totally lacking in the taste department.
4.) Generally disorganized seeming. They only had one c.r. left which was awkward... so the plate that was supposed to have two of 'em ended up only having one and they substituted a cheese enchilada instead.
5.) They're not open so late which kinda adds to the blahness.
-----------------------------
... So yeah. A lot of weird/disappointing things about this place, unfortunately. Still, for as mentioned some plates are good value if you don't mind sacrificing some flavor.
Gotta say 2 stars. :( -

2 Regular Carne Asada and 1 Chicken Burrito to go. I haven't been here in a while, but two of my friends and I were meeting up for dinner, so I stopped by here to grab some grub. I mean it's RIGHT down the street from my place.
The burritos are still yummy and filling. But I feel like the burrito has gotten smaller and the amount of chips they give you is the same if you ordered only 1 burrito. Hmmm...I'll have to come back again and reassess because it seems as though the "quantity" has gone down. =/ -

****UPDATE****
5/9/08
After receiving the good news from Sherrie I couldn't wait to try them out again. So, I ventured over there this evening. We tried to place an order over the phone but no answer. When I arrived I saw why, Sherrie and the gang were very busy. The remodel looked nice but I must confess I do miss the mural. However, they did a nice job and did not over do it. It's brighter and the kitchen is certainly more modern and roomier,
When I arrived the tables were mostly full and quite a few folks waiting for their take out orders. I asked Sherrie how long the wait would be and she said about 30 minutes. I figured I could hang out that long on Park St. (mojitos at Havana across the street maybe?) so I placed our order. I didn't end up going to Havana as I found the people and the kitchen staff more entertaining. So, I polished off a lime Jarritos after finding out they couldn't serve beer just yet (soon though). After about a 45 minute wait my order was complete. Sherrie kept apologizing for the long wait but I think most of us were just glad that they had reopened.
The food was good, but their chili verde and refritos were not as well seasoned as I remembered. I'll chalk that up to the new kitchen, pots and pans needing more seasoning. Still, it was good, we will be back and we're glad they've reopened. Welcome back!

I love this place! Great burritos, tostadas, tacos, platos, service. The carnitas and chili verde are my favorites although the pollo and carne asada are great too. I always order extra guacamole and chips. Very tasty, almost as good as mine. ;)
They've been closed for so long and we really miss them. I hope the remodel is going well and that they open soon! Everytime I drive down Park St. I check on them. -

I've been going to this place for over 15 years. And, honestly, once you've had their super steak burritos, enchiladas, rice, and re-fried beans..you'll never patronize any others. I am so bummed about their remodeling. My hubby works in Oakland and will occasionally drive down Park St., to see if business has re-open. And, if it ever does open, I hope the food will be just as great.
Update: Still closed, as of 4/20/07. I think their remodeling contractor is the same one that is working on the Bay Bridge. -

Packed during the week for lunch... packed. And freakin' HOT inside - well, at least with the warmer weather of last week. If I'm hot, I don't feel like eating, and when I don't feel like eating, I'm not a happy camper. Seriously, I was sticking to the chair.
The food was ok, but again - didn't feel like stuffing myself with cheap taqueria food when it was 80 degrees outside and 105 inside. We will probably come back here for lunch on a cooler day :) C'mon bay area weather - where you at??? -

Ok I'm going to be nice and only give two stars ONLY because I got here at the end of the night and it is possible that that's not the optimum time to get take out Mexican at this particular estabilishment.
At the same time, I need people to understand that if I say no Gauc its not an insult its simply that I'm allergic. It make me vomit. So if you want me to associate your food with the bile after taste of vomit go ahead and put t all over my quesadilla. If not respect my requests and just do it dammit!
Oh and the Chile Verde in my quesadilla...not the business.... but y'all got some good spicy salsa though.
Look I will be back because I think y'all deserve a second chance, just don't let me down dammit. -

Scrumptious and Delumptious
Alameda Taqueria has probably one of the best traditional Mexican burritos (i.e., rice, beans, meat, etc) in the Bay Area, imho. I'm usually not a fan of your typical burrito with rice (aka filler - I like my burritos on the meaty side), but I actually like these burritos. There is a certain je ne sais quoi something about them that just taste so good.
I always get the super burritos, so maybe those are more flavor packed, but I think these burritos taste a little sweeter than burritos found at other places. Perhaps it's my imagination, but I do tend to lean toward the sweeter end when it comes to savory foods.
So when it comes to ordering, you can't go wrong with the carnitas or the carne asada. You get your standard side of chips and salsa here, but be wary of eating too much of it before your meal because the burritos here are pretty gianormous. Even the standard non super burrito runs on the larger side. Bring a burrito buddy to share the delicious goodness of Alameda Taqueria or if you don't feel like sharing your precious meal, take home boxes are available on the counter for you too. ..hehe.Listed in: Cheap Eats

Review from Tony U.
This Taqueria is underground. There's a classical darkness about the place. For some reason, I think this Taqueria could have been used in the set of "The Crow."
Cheap lighting, tough looking staff; young, swanky Alamedianites. A complete nightmare of a facade to be honest.
But given the vibe, the quality is not compromised. I won't say that there are 5 star burritos here, but, that is because to me, border style Mexican, such as burritos, is fast food.
I'd take this place over Taco Bell any time of the day though. The burritos are gigantic enough to be breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
I'll probably come here again. The place is 3.5 stars, but I'm not going to bump up a Taqueria. -
Review from Phuoc K.
I've been going here for years and it's my favorite taqueria on either side of the bridge just cause it's clean, cheap, huge portions and uncomplicated. true, it doesn't have some of the more unique specialty plates of a more full service sit-down mexican/latin-american restaurant, but for your standard choices of burrito, tacos, enchiladas, flautas and meat plates, you can't really go wrong.
I stopped by there today since I was in Alameda (the first time in probably a year) just to see if things had changed after they reopened and I'm happy to report, that this place still remains on my top to-go taquerias list. Had the 2 crunchy tacos dinner plate (rice and beans included w/ corn tortillas) and the tacos were overflowing with meat. Savory and seasons ground beef in one and crispy carnitas in the other. And I actually think the rice and beans are even better than I remembered. This full plate and a large glass of watermelon agua fresca only set me back around $10 after taxes.
I wished I lived in Alameda still just so I could go here, cause sometimes you just need good and simple. -

Hmmm. 4 stars from other reviews, huh? Not sure why. This place has been around forever. My wife, who is almost an Alameda native, has a soft spot but I say they're average at best.
Sure, the burritos are huge, but if you watched "Super Size Me" you'd understand that there's no need to eat a burrito the size of a man's upper arm. Not in one sitting at least.
For fast, good eats, my vote goes to Ramiro & Sons on Alameda Ave. My Yelp for them is forthcoming.
The service since the reopening has been sloooow. If you must eat here, I'd suggest calling ahead and getting it to go. Nothing fancy about the dining area--and not full service--so you won't be missing anything. -

I love the Taqueria, they have the B.E.S.T Carnitas in town, and I love the drity cooks in the back that only speak a tiny bit of Enligh. Or Maybe they are just tricking us...
I am a little disappointed about how long the construction is taking, If they would only finish up their Remodel so I can stop trying all of the other joints in town...4 Stars...due to this. -

After a year of hearing it from friends how this taqueria is "the place to be!"
My first time trying the burrito at this place, it was actually pretty good. Their burrito is gigantic! I could barely eat half of it and yes it could be a bit tastier compared to El Farrito Taqueria i go to back in the city. But i think thats what makes it different. Its a different kind of flavor and i enjoyed it even after taking it home and ate it later.
Their "green sauce" (as to how people call it) is gooood! They only give you a little tiny cup worth but you could always ask for refill or a big cup. Their chips/salsa is not one of those "help yourself" situations.
Next time i go there, i shall try their dishes because it looks delicious. -

UPDATE: 6/3/11: They are open again as Island Taqueria! Same cooks, same menu, different owner.
UPDATE 8/16/10: They are closed again! Too bad.
UPDATE 8/16/08: This place has really found its stride again. The food is as good as ever and now they even serve mexican coke! They will earn that 5th star once the beer starts to flow again. Keep up the excellent work Alameda Taqueria!!
______
They're back! I am not impressed with the remodel considering how long it took. There must have been a lot of problems with the project and/or transfer of ownership.
The food seems to be about the same as it was before the remodel and management change. I believe this taqueria is still serves the best taqueria-style food of any other place I have been. However (and here is the reason for 3 stars), the soft tacos are a bit smaller than before (but 1 taco is still big enough for a meal), and there is no beer. They said it would take about a year to get another beer license. The service was really slow the three times I have been there since the re-opening. -

I grew up in A-town and have been eating here since forever. In high school, we'd fly across town during lunch to scarf down a chicken, pork, or beef super burrito. Yes, I used to finish one of those with no problem. Now that my metabolism has slowed down a bit, I can share a super chicken quesadilla or burrito and be a very happy girl.
I miss this Taqueria and have regular cravings of their goodies all the way in Sydney, Australia. I'm coming home for a visit in a few weeks and this place is on my must-eat-before-I-go-back-to-Sydney list.
Oh how I miss theeeeee.
FYI: There are NOOOOOO decent Mexican joints anywhere in Sydney. I'd even settle for Taco Bell but they ain't even got that! -

I come to Alameda from Oakland about once a week to visit my chiropractor.
By the time I get out of my early evening appointment I am starved. Too hungry to make the drive back to North Oakland.
I stumbled upon this place while experiencing a serious taco craving (I am known for my taco cravings; I must eat them 3-5 times a week).
Cheap. Large portions (one taco was enough to fill me up with leftovers!).
Very fast. Tasty.
I have only experienced the carnitas taco, so I can't speak for anything else. The chips and salsa are very tasty as well (the red salsa is SPICY! love it!).
A dependable, tasty, fast and cheap place to eat. -

This place is a solid 3.5 stars. It's pretty good, but my only complaint is that the food isn't warm enough.
I usually order the carne asada burrito...everything is fine, minus the heat of the food! It bothers me enough to where it only gets 3.5 stars...the portions are HUGE, the food is cheap (about $6 for a burrito that can be easily split into 2 meals), and the people who work here are incredibly friendly.
It is kind of strange that there are no sauces to drench your burrito in..not even hot sauce. You do get free chips and salsa with your meal so that's nice. I'll come back again, mainly because I like the location, the food isn't greasy, and I don't have to worry about getting shot at i.e., Oakland burrito trucks that have really gone down hill in taste and size. -

Super Steak Quesadilla. It's nothing fancy, but certainly is filling. There is something to be said about the sheer quantity of food here. If you can't finish the quesadilla in one sitting - don't worry, it tastes just as good hours later.

I am so glad Alameda Taqueria reopened. It has been my absolute favorite taqueria for eons. Why?

3. Appetite and soul satisfying comfort food generously portioned, made with attention and served in friendship. -

So I've eaten at AT a few times. It's probably where I've gone the most for cheap Mexican food in Alameda. Occasionally seating can be an issue, but on this visit we grabbed a table right away. I had an enchilada, and it was nothing special but totally good grub. Very filling and I would eat it again (even with all my digestive issues associated with Mexican food). Probably the best thing about this place is the price..the quality to price ratio is sah-weet. They have tamarind soda if you're into that...but no beer. It's a little like a fast food joint (replete with soul sucking fluorescent lights). Oh and the drink machine has RC Cola and unsweetened tea...which are rare treats from a fountain machine. The service was adequate, so no issues there.
Dog note: there's a couple seats outside, but no tables...if you don't mind having your burrito collapse in your lap, you and your mutt could eat out front, but I'd rather take it home if you're out with Fido.

I have lived in Alameda for five months and I have never been to Alameda Taqueria. This must be some exciting remodel. I see white paper on the windows and a step ladder when I look through the screen door. No progress has been made. I am very attached to Otaez (I live within walking distance!) and La Pinata. Come on, you! Give me someplace "new" to try.

the asada burrito(5.65) was pretty big and very bland, it came with a red and a green salsa and some chips made in house. the rice was mushy, the asada tasteless except for the oily taste.
i was looking for the horchata(1.95) but didn't see it so i skipped it,
this place is definitely overpriced for the inferior qualtiy food offered.
0k, the chips were pretty good. but i'm a carnivore and a rice eater, not a chipmunching chipmuck.Listed in: alameda…

THEY'RE FINALLY OPEN AGAIN!!!!!!!
WAHOOOOOO!!!!!!!
I was so excited, I was thinking about it all day yesterday. This is easily the best taqueria in Alameda, probably the best in the East Bay. When they Mojado a burrito, they do it right! The chile rellenos are my favorite, but sometimes they sell out like they did last night and I went with the enchiladas. Mmmmmm... And their nachos are the bomb. The refried beans don't have lard, but the rice does have chicken base, so just order without you true vegetarians. They make the best salsas and guacamole, ever, in the history of those things existing. I get both green and red salsas with the chips and it's fun to figure out which one will be hotter. And all the same fools were making the food, so even though they've been closed for soooooo long, they still remembered that the boy doesn't eat salsa or guacamole. Super stars for that.
Now for the bad, which was not enough to take off any stars, but be warned. They had some new girl working the cash register last night, not the people who owned the joint, and she didn't pay attention to the "no guacamole or salsa" specification in the burrito, and charged us for stuff we didn't order. She basically wasn't listening and was so green that she had to ask for help on figuring out how much to refund us. They still had the same chefs back there, so they sent her up to us to check with us to make sure, because she hadn't given our normal specs. That's pretty amazing, that those guys would remember after all this time. Of course, before the renovations, and before we moved, we would order from this place weekly and it was always the same thing for the boy. Anyway, the only bad is that new girl and she just needs to be broken in. I miss the old owner who used to work the cash register (Mini I think). He was funny and good natured.

The Alameda Taqueria is to burritos what an asshole owner is to a pitbull. They make a mean one.

I've been here 3 times and everytime I got the wet burrito. The food is freshly made to order not like typically fast food burritto spots where they just have the everything on a warmer. The burrito comes with sour cream Guacamole rice beans salsa and your choice of meat. The food is alright. The thing I hate about them is that their hella shady!!! I usually get no beans or guacamole in my burrito. An each time my burrito is packed with just rice. Barely any meat, and a dash of salsa, then I ask for extra salsa and their gonna charge my ass. You sure didn't reduce my price when I didn't want beans or guacamole. Anyways overall this place is ok would be better if they evened out your burrito. I honestly would rather go to taco bell. i don't like paying $10 for a rice burrito
