Alameda Point is the umbrella name for the hangar where there's now a winery co-op.  The wineries in question include Blacksmith Cellars, R&B Cellars, Carica Wines, Rock Wall Wine Company, Ehrenberg Cellars and JRE wines.  The tasting room is open 12-5PM on Saturdays and Sundays.  There's a holiday open house on Saturday, December 5, http://www.rockwallwin... .

I showed up today, arriving on foot, with the idea that there might possibly be someone around who could show me around.  I was flabbergasted to discover a fair sized group of winemakers who were hanging around in the hangar, waiting for business.  I was the business -- the only customer around for the half-hour or so when I was there.  I think I tasted around 17 wines; the average quality was excellent.  Bottle prices ranged from $12 to about double that, and I noticed a 10% case discount that probably applies to mixed cases.  Everyone should check this place out -- it was started by the Rosenblums, and the ambiance recalls the very early days of Rosenblum Cellars, when I was customer #24 or something.

The winemakers in the hangar are people who started as amateur winemakers and moved on up to the point where they could rent some space for themselves in large Napa or Sonoma wineries.  Creating a home for them in Alameda was a great move.  These guys could clearly use our support, and I sure hope they get it.

My wife, a wine afficianado, and I, relatively clueless, both appreciate several of the wineries housed here, but I'll treat them in individual reviews. This is about the facilities. The new tasting room is large, with a couple of spacious and well organized bars. The geodesic dome they use for events has a great view across the bay. They have knowledgable staff, and every Saturday one or more of the tenant winemakers is there in person to offer additional tasting options and discuss present and future bottlings. All in all, a great place for a great time.
