Nothing tugs at your heartstrings like a small town during the holiday season. Alameda does this well, and so very earnestly.
Dozens and dozens of folks turned out for the tree-lighting ceremony this year. Festivities included a band of elves in stripey outfits playing Xmas songs, a speech by the mayor, an appearance by Santa himself, and a routine by a locally famous Xmas tree dancing troupe (complete with working lights!).
The tree itself was small, decorated only with little white lights and clinging to the top of City Hall. The crowd counted down from 10 to 1, and voila! Lights! It was no Union Square event, but the kids loved it.
