Don't know how this place got such a high ranking
Teachers don't teach with exception of a couple of them. By in large year after year science math and English which are supposed to be core of any us education have a pass the buck kick the cab down the road attitude. Now foreign languages and science which has sucked for years are getting weaker. How the administration can continue to go through motions of finding passionate qualified teachers is beyond me. Sure budgets are tight and shrinking but these people are being trusted with preparing our kids for university success. When there is no differentiation. Between ap classes and honors classes except for the test at end of year which the tests being administered what the hell are they doing??Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Simon C.Fishers, IN09318May 27, 2016
What School!
Nothing to say at least it's better than Encienal. The teachers here are ok, but they lack experience and teachers get to make all new rules. They also hog the pit!
Pros:
Classes
Mr. Dalton rolling around!
Cons:
Spirt days
Leadership

Never knew that we can yelp about high schools
first of all, mgmt or teachers, principals before the class of 2010 is alright. afterwards
shit just got real, new principals and stupid new rules, we have alot of councelors and teachers who are the best of the best with thier PHDs and ect, LEAVING..yes leaving
i never seen so much movement within a school within such time and notice.
so being class of 09' i feel so lucky to leave with good mgmt and teachers. Now its all lame and crappy, teachers are being pressured to do stupid things and its just wrong
i heard that now students can just sign up for AP classes w.o taking the pre reqs or something stupid like that. It sounds great but I feel that once the students who are not prepared go into that class, he or she might either do well which is good or screw up.
if they screwup then tehy will waste the teacher's /class time. with this in mind, the teachers have less time to teach the kids and thus learning less crap and in the end screw up on the ap test.
overall, shyt just got real at ahs, its nice and all, i still head back to help out teachers but it really sucks.
gluck to the teachers still teaching there.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 1 - Doctor G.Alameda County, CA022272Mar 7, 2011
Crowded, multicultural student body located near the Park St. shopping district for easy lunch dining. Strong social sciences and art departments. Weak in the sciences, especially chemistry. Good sports program. Good leadership program. Poor counseling department. Huge numbers of students graduate and attend UC schools.
Totally inadequate parking for everyone, including teachers.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jessica C.Cupertino, CA694809335Nov 26, 2006First to Review
Wow, I can't believe I'm the first one to Yelp review my hs. It is what it is. I actually think it looked nicer back then than it does now. There were far less bars around the place. We could go out to have lunch on Park Street at various locations. Most of the teachers were fair. The "new" gym was insane with echo sounds because they hadn't prepared the sound in it yet. Hey, it helped me get into a good college, so for that, I guess it wasn't all that bad.
They had really well maintained tennis courts and a decent pool. And some classes were held in the historical building side which had insanely high ceilings for the rooms, and really pretty steps to sit on.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jackie R.San Francisco, CA2302Mar 17, 2015
This school was okay when I attended here. I graduated in 2013 and I've heard that things have gone far more downhill since I've left. I transferred here sophomore year (2010) from ASTI, the same year the new principal took over. My first year at this high school went okay, however if you're introverted like I was you'll have a much harder time making friends (I recommend joining lots of clubs or doing sports to meet people). I eventually made some really good friends and I still keep in touch with them in college.
My second year here they started to get more ridiculous (like if you were late to class you got a call home to your parents) and the summer school program was cut. By my last year here they no longer allowed you to change teachers/transfer to a better class and heard that they planning on making so you can't drop a class anymore. Judging by the other reviews I'm glad I graduated when I did before things got worse.
Overall, I did have a very good experience attending this school. I had some really wonderful teachers and made a lot of great friends. My only regret is that I wish I had tried to be more involved in activities sooner instead of waiting senior year to get involved in clubs and events. I'm glad I went here though.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - Peter C.Hayward, CA1166240Jan 31, 2008

Mr. Burgun Math teacher was my middle school math teacher he is the best math teacher i ever had.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lillian A.Alameda, CA937Nov 10, 2015
I'm currently a senior at this high school and so far the experience has been pleasant! There was personal drama and workload stress but that's to be expected from every high school. Our sports program is good and the teachers are always ready to be casual and funny with the students, not maintain a strictly professional relationship. It can really help to know your teacher's funny and affable when the workloads crushing you.
