Not necessary a hiking trail.  But a nice paved trail.  Basically a flat trail from Niles around L street to Coyote Hills following the Alameda creek.  The trail is about 12 miles and its flat.  There is minimal walking traffic around Quarry lakes, Some dogs on their leases with their owners.  Overall a nice place to come for a walk.
A lot of runners and cyclist.  It makes for good marathon training, if you start in Niles and run down to Coyote Hills and around the 3.5 mile loop and back up the trail.  Nice place to hop on my bike for some mileage.  If you are riding, be courteous and announce yourself on the left and watch the walkers.

There is a place to park in the middle, the Isherwood parking lot is a good place to stop it has a port-o-potty and spigot.

My favorite place to run. I'm glad I live close to this trail. This trail is good for long runs especially if you're training for marathons.

Great trail for hiking, biking and being just one with nature.  A poem to get you in the mood:

We run in and out of memories and milestones
    like rats in a maze
Never slowing down to take a long gaze
into the stillness of a moment

How much is enough when you have more than you need
Is it  two cars or three
But have you taken a look at the speed
in which you've chosen to run your life

Be still and just enjoy the calmness of the trees
    And their rustling leaves
Listen to the sound of your own breath
    As it leaves you
For it is another chance you get
    To just be

Don't come here. If you are planning to ride your bike especially if you plan to ride on the  south trail, which is paved. There are...

    Too many people.
Too many kids on bikes followed by their dad's on bikes, and mom's pushing strollers.
Too many canadian geese near Niles. I almost ran over one. Stupid goose wouldn't move. I think it wanted to die.
    Too many other bicyclist.
Too many dog owners with their dogs. Some don't even curb their dog's poop!
Also under one of the bridges, I believe kids go there to burn some find of plant material and they hold it close to their mouths, if you know what I mean, after school.

So stay away. It is better to ride your bike on the streets.

My friend and I like to bike down this trail on occasion. There's one side that's paved for bikes and it goes as far as coyote hills while the other end leads towards Niles Canyon (watch out for the White Witch of Niles Canyon! Heh, just joshin). However, if you decide to go towards Niles Canyon during the evening make sure to avoid doing so around nightfall as there are bats that fly around and sometimes into your face (My friend's still traumatized, heh).

There are lots of people walking on the trail during the day so you feel safe. I doubt you'll run into anything crazy like a Mountain Lion.

If you have taken the BART from Fremont you may have envied folks walking early morning/late evening along the banks of Alameda Creek. The easiest way to access this trail is if you just park next to the Isherwood bridge. If you a terrified of dogs that are not on leash, do not take the dirt trail but cross the bridge and use the paved trail. 2 miles to your southeast and you will cross the Bart track--continue under the bridge and the creek widens--this will be almost a 6 to 8 mile loop if you begin at the Isherwood bridge (corner of Paseo Padre/Isherwood--cross the bridge and park on your right). This is not a very shaded trail so avoid hot days (on warm days the trails inside the park are better).
I enjoy my walks will my LO in stroller and soon he may begin riding a bicycle on these trails. Our home is right next to it--easy access makes this one my favorite walking trail.
Why -1 star--too many bicyclist who sneak up behind you and make you jump, dog owners who do not pick up after their doggies, and not enough shade but otherwise beautiful place to stroll or for a serious jog/run/training.

My girlfriend and I run here a lot. We start at the Niles end of the trail and run toward the Bay. The trail is flat and 12 miles long (though we've never run past the 6 mile marker). It's a nice trail because it's gravel on one side (up to about mile 5), whereas it's paved on the other side of the creek. It's not a very crowded trail. We usually run for an hour and pass 10 to 15 people at most, sometimes less. So that's nice. There's not that much shade, though. I'd say about 20% of the trail is shaded. The scenery is fairly nice, though repetitive.

So bottom line, the scenery isn't spectacular, but the lack of crowds and the soft trail makes it a great place to run.

This is not my favorite trail for road biking or running because it's flat, straight and boring   However, I find it very convenient when I'm training for a triathlon (I only do sprint distances, so this is perfect for training).  Last week, I did a bike/run brick training here and parked at the Isherwood staging area (thankfully there is a porty potty!)   I did have some reservations parking there for some reason. I was a little worried my car would get broken into, but I think there's enough traffic and people around the parking lot that it can be quite safe. I originally was thinking about to parking inside Quarry lakes - cuz I think it's safer in there.  *shrug*

Anyways, I did a 15.50 mile ride through Coyote Hills and back before I ran 3 miles on the trails inside Quarry Lakes. Man, I hated the ride up to Coyote hills - it was all headwind (but may be the headwind is stronger in the afternoons - I'm assuming it's not so bad earlier in the day).  The good thing is, I didn't have to stop. I can keep on going. One continuous ride!  Also, hardly any people to dodge. It was quite nice.  Do look out for dogs sometimes and make sure to call out to runners/walkers when passing on your bike. I always make sure I call out "On your left" when I pass. When they move, I always say "Thank you!"

A loooooong stretch of trail---around 12 miles stretching from Coyote Hills all the way to Niles Canyon

One side of the creek is gravel, the other is cement.

The only changes in elevation are when you have to go under a bridge or overpass.  You can always find an access to the trail if you live in UC.

I've gone walking, jogging, and bike riding here, and it's an awesome location for nature watching as well.

I also feel very safe as there are always people around, and I love how everyone greets each other.

    Great Day Hiking Trip.

My Best Friend and I are working on conditioning ourselves for a more intense hiking trip in September so we decided to walk up and down the hills in this park.We had noticed it when we made a left on the Thorton Avenue Exit. (the first exit off the Dumbarton Bridge)

We parked in an open lot right before the entrance to give us a longer workout. You can drive into the main entrance but it will be a $5.00 fee to park. As we walked past the entrance we came up to a map of the whole park and in a wooden covered box right next to it are individual maps to take on your trail (the box is not labeled so feel free to open it). We took the up and down hill not really following one trail just jumping from one to another. We traced back our steps so we could know exactly how to get back. A great way to prevent getting lost.
The top view is amazing we took some great pictures. We also noticed from the top really great ground level flat trails for bikes and strollers. The bikers were also having fun on the mountains.

Can't wait to go back but I do recommend lots of water.

This is a long but easy trail.  There are a number of entrances to it along the way and there are porta-potties if you're like me and can't go 5 minutes without a bathroom.  There have been some restoration efforts on the creek and neighboring "lakes".  They've done a great job planting trees with different kinds of fruits, providing nesting sites, etc. so there are many different kinds of birds to see.  I don't know that I'd drive for hours to get there, but since I can walk there from my house, it's great.

    *****May 25, 2008 update*****
I just had to bump this place up a star!  After having ridden my bike to the bay and back a few times, I've realized that this place is just awesome (see pics).  It can actually be something of a workout even though it's relatively flat because:
    a - it's twelve miles long
b - the stairmaster portions of the trail where you go under roads (at least on a bike I'd call these stairmaster portions)
       -and-
c - because it gets windier and windier as you approach the bay meaning you practically don't go forward no matter how hard you pedal.

Plus, there are quite a few other trails toward the bay end of the trail in coyote hills regional park.

I've lived by Alameda Creek for a majority of my life. It's a sad shame, or maybe a really big plus, that not that many people from Ardenwood really use this excellent recreational trail. I've jogged over the southern levy (the paved-asphalt side) for several years now. The path is excellent for running, the bike riders and pedestrians share the way and are  very courteous, and the sights are gorgeous. Who knew you could see a little enclave of natural marshland, complete with migrating geese, trout, and beautiful white cranes, literally in your backyard? If you are in the area and the sun is out and setting, get your butt off the computer chair and take a walk on the creek. It's definitely worth it.

Just don't go there after a heavy rainstorm, unless the thought of getting swept away by a torrent of rapids thrills you.

Beautiful place to enjoy a nice California day. If you're a road cyclist, stay on the left side if you're going toward Coyote Hills. That is the paved side, and the other side is all unpaved. Plenty of straight smooth roads as you get closer to Coyote Hills. There are some bumps hear the Cesar Chavez Middle School Park entrance, but after that, you should be fine. It's a quiet trail in the mornings on weekdays. There are a ton more cyclists when the weekend comes around, or around the 5-7PM time.

I LOVE taking my dog here.  It's a lovely trail (flat and simple to walk on) that extends from the Niles are all the way to the bay.  You can either bike it or walk/run it.  My dog loves the fact that she can go off-leash here and chase all the birds that come her way.

For those on bikes, please be careful of the little furry canines.  They don't mean to get in your way.  Thanks.

I rode the ol Cadenza 8 out here the other day.  It is a nice convenient trail that cuts through Fremont and Union City and there is no auto interruption.  It gets super windy as you make your way towards coyote hills.  There are nice mile markers on the ground too.

I think I'm going to ride with my shirt off next time I come here.

Not many people know about this trail, but it's a hidden jewel in Fremont/Union City area. I have been running and road biking on this trail for almost 5 years now and love to get on it whenever I have an opportunity. For my marathon runs, I primarily practice on this trail.

The trail is around 12 miles stretching from Mission & Niles to Coyote Hills. This trail runs on both sides of Alameda creek trail. One side of trail is paved asphalt trail and other side is gravel. I have been biking on Asphalt side and have been running on gravel side.

Views from the trail are gorgeous. As you go from Niles side toward Cayote hills, first you get awesome view of Quarry lakes and East Union city hills. Then trail gets into the bay and Coyote hills area. It's celestial to run and bike through vast open space of the bay and Cayote hills. During winter when creek is full of water, creek is very pretty too...

The Alameda Creek Trail is the Tri-Cities' freeway for runners Once you pick up the trail a mile from the BART station and head toward the bay, city life fades fast and furious, with oak trees on your left and mallards bobbing on Alameda Creek to the right. And when you get past the houses, you'll see (and smell) fields of mustard in full yellow bloom.  It's a good 10-k run , for slow pokes like me it takes almost an hour to complete.

I will never come here again and unfortunately that has nothing to do with the trail itself. The trail is nice. It's flat. Good for and easy run or bike ride. And dogs can be off leash here, which is great.

My review has to do with the Alameda Creek Stables staging area/parking lot. I took my dog out for a run. I was gone for about an hour and when I came back both my driver's side and passenger's side windows were smashed. Someone had broken into my car. There wasn't even anything visible in my car to warrant a break in.

I contacted the police, who contacted the East Bay Regional Park police. They came out and took a report and the officer told me this happens EVERY DAY. Not once in a while, EVERY SINGLE DAY. Some guy drove in while the officer was leaving and said he was here on Wednesday and every single car in the parking lot had been broken into.

Do not park your car in the parking lot if you are going to on the trail. Park at the fire station or on Union City Blvd. Oh and FYI the officer said that there are even more break ins at the Isherwood Staging area. Be careful!

An offskirt of this creek runs along the side of my neighborhood. I often walk my dog along the offskirt and then connect to the main trail and walk to Hop Ranch where there is a small park and a middle school. I also take the opposite direction to the Union City library area. Although I haven't even walked a significant portion of the trail, I find it to be relaxing and a good alternative to walking down neighborhoods or busy roads. The scenery isn't that great, but I like looking at the backyards of strangers' houses. :P

I love flat trails! Often that I organize a leisure bike ride with friends and I always want to go on flat trails. This was one of the first trails that I tried exploring with my group. We had fun! Plenty of parking space at Isherwood too. The only bad thing about this trail is when it gets really windy at the end. It is compared to climbing a steep elevation really. But, I will definitely go back to this trail again just for some social fun.

I love the Alameda Creek Trails!  The back end of my neighborhood actually runs along the creek and there are multiple entrance to the trails.  What I love about the creek trails is the view of the rolling Hayward/UC/Fremont hills if you are going east and the awesome view of Coyote Hills and the Peninsula if you are heading west.

On a typical ride, we jump on the trail and ride west toward Coyote Hills.  From my hood to the end is about 4 miles.  We usually ride through Coyote Hills Regional park trails, go up a few hills and head back.

Depending on the day, the weather can really affect your ride.  Some days there is a slight breeze, other days there is strong wind and can be a bit cold.  Typically it's a great workout because of the bay wind.  Riding west is challenging because of the wind factor pushing you so you have to pedal twice as fast in order to get some speed, but riding east is awesome because the wind pushes you and can gain more speed.

Five stars because Alameda Creek is a very relaxing trail.  It's not uncommon to see walkers, runners, hardcore cyclists, leisure bicycle riders, and dog walkers on the trail.  Most people you come across are friendly and will usually greet you with a smile and a "hi" or acknowledge you with a head tilt.

Another reason for 5 stars is the natural setting.  Fresh water meets salt water creates an awesome estuary for birds and fish.  While riding the other night, it was getting dark around 8:30.  While riding through Coyote Hills, we saw flocks of ducks and geese flying toward the bay.  We also took a few minutes to observe the pelicans and cranes.  Who knew a creek trail (considered boring by some) can actually be a hidden gem?

I live in Niles so it is a great place for me to run, usually get to run there 2 to 3 times a week, try to make it part of my bike ride on my down days.  There are couple of rough patches on the north side of the creek for biking nothing a small bobcat and a vib roller can't take out.  The north side is made of dirt.  The north side is pavement and my friend takes his road bike as part of his workout all the way to the bay.  I m start going to do that pretty soon too.  The only thing is I can really knock it is that it is too man-made for me to be a real creek feel.

I came here one Saturday at noon with the mountain bikes and parked my car at this stopping point.  There is plenty of free parking, as well as a port-o-potty.  Then, I proceeded to ride my bike down the (paved) Alameda Creek Trail which runs parallel to the creek, away from cars.  It is a nice, leisurely ride, being that it is paved and away from cars, with a few slopes, but nothing too crazy.  Then, you take a left on Dust Trail to connect to Coyote Hills Regional Park.  (See my separate review for Coyote Hills biking.)

These are great trails because one side is paved and the other rocks. Lots of space with great nature views and you begin to forget how close you are to civilization. It can become a bit repetitive but if you get to Coyote Hills you can then hike or bike through a different environment.

I came here b/c some schmucks from the regional parks were at a street fair in Oakland bragging about their wonderful trail.  Dreary, ugly, and depressing.  I will never come back here (thank God I don't live in Fremont).   Oh, and when I stopped off at one of the adjacent parks to get a drink of water, some guy told me that crime was really bad in the park and that cars got broken into all the time.  And this LOOKS like a relatively NICE part of Fremont!  Fremont must really be a ghetto if this is considered a "nice" trail and you don't dare leave anything in your car if you want to go running here.   :-(    1 star is being generous.

I live in Niles and really enjoy this Creek. I have driven to some of the parks and left my car unlocked without any issues. I have been here at Dawn and at Dusk which is when access to the park is closed at many points. The Trail is beautiful through the Niles area and at the Coyote hills end. Parts in between are sparse but that is one of it's assets; It is not all the same. I just like it being uncrowded as it is and that Creek goers are friendly and greet each other. Hike, Bike, Fish, Jog or visit briefly for a picnic. It is a true Jewel and hats off to the maintenance guys, who I see all the time.
